Spain’s Jenni Hermoso denies consensual kiss from ex-soccer president after World Cup win in testimony

World Cup champion Jenni Hermoso of Spain was in court on Monday to testify at the trial of Luis Rubiales, the ex-Spain soccer president who controversially kissed her during the 2023 Cup celebration.

During her testimony, Hermoso denied Rubiales’ claim that the kiss, which caused worldwide outrage, was consensual.

“I felt disrespected,” Hermoso said in Madrid’s High Court. “I think it was a moment that stained one of the happiest days of my life.”

Hermoso added that she “didn’t hear or understand anything” from Rubiales when asked if he had asked to kiss her.

“The next thing he did was to grab me by the ears and kiss me on the mouth,” she said.

Rubiales, 47, is being accused of sexual assault and trying to coerce Hermoso, as well as others, to support him publicly.

EX-SPAIN SOCCER BOSS LUIS RUBIALES TO FACE TRIAL OVER WOMEN’S WORLD CUP KISS

He has denied the charges against him, claiming the kiss was consensual and occurred in a “moment of jubilation.”

He argues that Hermoso “lifted me up” as a celebratory gesture and he asked her for “a little kiss.” Rubiales claims she said yes.

Prosecutors, Hermoso and the country’s players’ association are asking the judge to issue a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence, as well as a 50,000 euros payment for damages and a ban from ever working as a sports official again.

Rubiales could face a fine or a prison sentence of one to four years if found guilty of his charges, per court officials.

Former Spain women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda, former sports director of Spain’s men’s national team Albert Luque, and the soccer federation’s former head of marketing, Rubén Rivera, are also on trial for allegedly pressuring Hermoso to defend Rubiales publicly after the incident.

Rubiales was pressured out of his post as Spain’s soccer president in 2023, resigning while being banned by FIFA for three years despite an initial press conference where he reiterated that he wouldn’t be stepping down. Rubiales said in that speech that he was a victim of a “witch hunt” by “false feminists.”

Since the incident, Hermoso says she has had trouble escaping the spotlight, especially in Mexico where she plays for her club team in between her duties for her country.

“I have not been able to really live freely,” she said in her testimony.

In her seven World Cup matches, Hermoso tallied three goals and two assists to aid her team’s efforts in winning the trophy.

World Wetlands Day 2025 Theme and Significance: The Art of Living Safeguards Nature’s Lifelines

Bangalore, January 29: Every year on February 2nd, World Wetlands Day reminds us of the vital role wetlands play in sustaining life. This day marks the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971, an international treaty recognising the critical importance of these ecosystems for both people and the planet. A prime example of this ecological treasure is the Haiderpur Wetlands, nestled within the Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh, India. Spanning approximately 6,900 hectares, this Ramsar site is home to over 333 bird species and a wealth of flora and fauna, making it a sanctuary of biodiversity.

The theme for World Wetlands Day 2025, ‘Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future’ highlights the profound connection between wetlands and human well-being. Wetlands provide clean water, protect against floods, boost biodiversity, and offer recreational opportunities – all essential for a healthy and thriving society. Yet, their immense value often goes unnoticed. World Wetlands Day 2025 Date and Theme: Know History and Significance of the Day That Raises Awareness About the Importance of Wetlands.

The Art of Living’s Commitment to Wetlands

The Art of Living Social Projects is dedicated to preserving and restoring these natural lifelines. Wetlands are nature’s reservoirs, recharging groundwater, preventing soil erosion, and acting as carbon sinks to combat climate change. Unfortunately, urbanisation and industrial activities have significantly degraded many wetlands.

At Haiderpur Wetlands, The Art of Living Social Projects has made a tangible impact. By engaging local communities, conducting educational workshops, and training youth as bird guides, the initiative has encouraged a sense of ownership and responsibility among the people. These efforts have transformed Haiderpur Wetlands from a neglected area into a vibrant haven for biodiversity. February 2025 Holidays and Festivals Calendar: Basant Panchami, Valentine’s Day, Maha Shivratri and More – Get Full List of Major Events in the Second Month of the Year.

This World Wetlands Day, The Art of Living Social Projects calls on individuals, organisations, and communities to join hands in safeguarding these critical ecosystems. Wetlands are more than water bodies; they are lifelines that sustain human well-being and environmental health.

Let’s honour the vital role of wetlands by committing to their preservation – not just today, but every day. Together, we can ensure that wetlands continue to nurture biodiversity, protect against climate extremes, and enhance the quality of life for future generations. Because when wetlands thrive, so does humanity.

World Wetlands Day 2025 Date and Theme: Know History and Significance of the Day That Raises Awareness About the Importance of Wetlands

Every year, World Wetlands Day is observed on the second day of February every year, which means it will be marked on February 2. The annual event aims to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands and calls for collective action to promote their conservation. Wetlands that include marshes, swamps, estuaries, and mangroves play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They act as natural water filters, improve water quality, regulate floods, store carbon, and provide habitat for diverse wildlife. Wetlands also support millions of people by offering livelihoods through fishing, agriculture, and ecotourism. In this article, let’s learn more about the World Wetlands Day 2025 date, the World Wetlands Day 2025 theme and the significance of the annual event. World Wetlands Day 2025 Theme and Significance: The Art of Living Safeguards Nature’s Lifelines.

    World Wetlands Day History

The history of World Wetlands Day dates back to the year 1971 when several environmentalists gathered to reaffirm protection and love for wetlands, which are water ecosystems containing plant life and other organisms that bring ecological health in abundance to not only water bodies but environments as a whole. The World Wetlands Secretary Department is originally from Gland, Switzerland. The adoption of the Ramsar convention in the Iranian city of Ramsar occurred on February 2, 1971.

    World Wetlands Day Significance

World Wetlands Day highlights the positive impact that wetlands have had on the world and brings communities together for the benefit of the planet. Over the years, human construction has led to various ecological problems affecting wetlands. Many wetlands are being lost, and ecologists claim that humans should recognise the dilemma before a natural filter and conservation of the world is lost.

This day also raises global awareness of wetlands’ significant role not only for people but for the planet. Environmental enthusiasts come together on this day to celebrate their love for nature through celebration, which recognises what wetlands have done for not only humans but all sorts of organisms in the world.

  • World Hijab Day 2025 Date and Significance: Why Is Hijab Day Observed on February 1? Everything To Know About the Day That Recognises Hijab-Wearing Women

World Hijab Day 2025 Date and Significance: Why Is Hijab Day Observed on February 1? Everything To Know About the Day That Recognises Hijab-Wearing Women

World Hijab Day 2025 falls on February 1. As the name suggests, this observance is focused on encouraging women of all religious backgrounds to wear and experience the HIjab for a day. The main motto of this observance is to help bring some perspective on why practicing Muslim women choose to wear the HIjab and create a more accepting society that allows women to choose what they want to do. As we celebrate World Hijab Day 2025, here is everything you need to know about this day, how to celebrate World Hijab Day and its significance. February 2025 Holidays and Festivals Calendar: Get Full List of Major Events in the Second Month of the Year.

    World Hijab Day 2025 Date

World Hijab Day 2025 falls on February 1. This annual event was founded by Nazma Khan and is observed across 140 countries. Nazma Khan said her goal was also to promote wider acceptance of hijab wearing as well as combating religious discrimination. List of Long Weekends in 2025: Check Out the New Year Calendar for the Holiday Dates To Plan Vacations and Weekend Getaways.

    World Hijab Day Significance

While the world is generally aware that policing what a woman chooses to wear or not wear is anti-feminist, the lines blur considerably when it comes to wearing the Hijab. While there are several areas in the world where the HIjab is forced upon women and used as a way to oppress them, there are millions of women around the world who choose to wear it as a part of practicing their religion. However, the oppression of women caused by forcing Hijab on them does not allow people to label those who choose to wear it as a part of the oppressed class. This distinction is what many have difficulty understanding. And this stigma associated with the hijab is what Nazma Khan wants to tackle.

As we celebrate World Hijab Day 2025, we hope that you take this opportunity to have an open, kind and empathetic conversation with a Hijabi woman to understand why they make this choice and support them in feeling empowered and comfortable in their own ways. Here’s wishing everyone a Happy World Hijab Day 2025!

Washington, DC, airline tragedy recalls two devastating plane crashes that rocked sports world

An American Airlines flight that collided with a U.S. Army helicopter resulting in one of the most devastating airline disasters in decades hearkened back to two tragedies.

On Wednesday night, several members associated with U.S. Figure Skating and their families were on the aircraft that collided with the helicopter. At least six had ties to the Skating Club of Boston, located in Norwood, Massachusetts.

The figure skating community has felt the effects of an airline tragedy in the past.

Eighteen members of the U.S. figure skating team were killed in a plane crash in Berg-Kampenhout, Belgium on their way to Prague for the World Figure Skating Championships. Laurence Owen and Steffi Westerfield were among those killed in the crash. They were considered to be rising stars in the sport and were preparing for an Olympic bid.

There were 73 people aboard Sabena Flight 548. The New York Daily News reported, citing investigators, that it was likely the jet’s stabilizers that caused the incident.

“U.S. Figure Skating can confirm that several members of our skating community were sadly aboard American Airlines Flight 5342, which collided with a helicopter yesterday evening in Washington, D.C,” U.S. Figure Skating said in a statement on Thursday. “These athletes, coaches, and family members were returning home from the National Development Camp held in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.

“We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy and hold the victims’ families closely in our hearts. We will continue to monitor the situation and will release more information as it becomes available.”

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu addressed the tragedy in a news conference.

“It was truly an honor to have future Olympians and those who are at the highest competition level of figure skating, right here in our capital,” she said.

“We were so excited to have the opportunity to host the national championship, and even yesterday I had folks tell me how wonderful these last few days have been with additional individuals that came into our community, whether to watch or to participate. So, our community was really excited and thankful that everything went well with the championship. And so right now we’re just waiting for more information from U.S. Figure Skating that we can release. But right now we’re just hoping and praying again.”

The city of Wichita was described as a tightknit community, which is also no stranger to tragic aircraft incidents.

Wichita State University’s football team, flying in a Martin 404, crashed in Colorado in 1970, leaving 31 dead. Eight players and the co-pilot survived, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal.

The cause of the crash was determined to be because of pilot error.

“Wichita is located in the heart of our nation, and today we are grieving. I received confirmation this morning that no one survived the crash of American Airlines flight 5342,” Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., wrote in a post on Thursday on X.

“This is a sad day for Kansas and our nation. My heart breaks for the lives that were lost and their loved ones who are now learning that their family or friends were on the flight.
