World Pulses Day 2025 Date, History, and Significance: Know About United Nations Event That Recognises the Nutritional and Environmental Benefits of Pulses

World Pulses Day, celebrated annually on February 10, is a global observance that emphasises the importance of pulses—such as lentils, chickpeas, beans, and peas—in promoting health and sustainability. World Pulses Day 2025 falls on Monday. The day aims to raise awareness about the vital role these nutrient-dense foods play in ensuring food security, improving nutrition, and contributing to sustainable agricultural practices. Pulses, often referred to as “powerhouses of nutrition,” offer a wealth of health benefits while also being environmentally friendly to grow. World Pulses Day 2025: From Toor Dal (Pigeon Pea Dal) to Masoor Dal (Red Lentils), 5 Types of Dal Popular in Every Indian Household.

World Pulses Day 2025 Date and History

World Pulses Day is celebrated on February 10 every year.  World Pulses Day was established by the United Nations in December 2018, following the recognition of pulses as a key component in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The year 2016 was designated as the International Year of Pulses by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), acknowledging their potential in addressing issues like hunger, malnutrition, and sustainable agriculture.

The success of the International Year of Pulses, which highlighted the nutritional and environmental benefits of pulses, led to the creation of World Pulses Day. The observance, held every year on February 10th, provides a platform for governments, organisations, and individuals to advocate for the widespread consumption and cultivation of pulses.

The Significance of World Pulses Day

World Pulses Day serves several key purposes, from promoting better health and nutrition to advancing environmental sustainability. Here’s why the day is important:

Nutritional Benefits: Pulses are rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They provide a high-quality, plant-based source of protein, making them an essential food for vegetarians, vegans, and those seeking to reduce their meat consumption. Pulses also help regulate blood sugar levels, promote heart health, and improve digestive health due to their high fiber content.

Sustainability: Pulses are incredibly eco-friendly crops. They require less water compared to other crops, and their ability to fix nitrogen in the soil reduces the need for chemical fertilisers. This makes pulses an important part of sustainable farming practices and a key player in mitigating the environmental impact of agriculture.

Food Security: Pulses are affordable and widely accessible, making them a reliable food source in both developing and developed regions. Their ability to grow in diverse climates and their long shelf life makes them an essential component in improving food security globally.

Cultural and Economic Importance: Pulses are a staple food in many countries and are integrated into a variety of cultural dishes. In addition to their dietary importance, the global pulse trade supports the livelihoods of millions of farmers and contributes to local economies.

World Pulses Day is a reminder of the powerful impact pulses have on human health, the environment, and global food systems. By raising awareness about their nutritional value and environmental benefits, this observance encourages the widespread adoption of pulses in diets around the world. As we continue to face challenges related to food security, climate change, and nutrition, pulses offer a sustainable, nutritious solution that benefits both people and the planet.

  • Argentina’s Milei follows Trump and ditches World Health Organization, others to follow?

Argentina’s Milei follows Trump and ditches World Health Organization, others to follow?

Argentine President Javier Milei, a close ally of President Donald Trump, on Wednesday announced his intent to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), echoing steps taken by the U.S.’s Commander-in-Chief last month.

A spokesman for Milei announced the order and said the withdrawal from the world’s top health and safety agency was due to “profound differences” with the United Nations organization due to its advice during the COVID-19 pandemic that led to the largest shutdowns “in the history of mankind.”

Milei’s decision came just 2 weeks after Trump, for the second time, issued an executive order to pull the U.S. out of WHO, again citing its handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

TRUMP LAUNCHING US SOVEREIGN WEALTH FUND: WHAT TO KNOW

WHO, which issued a statement immediately following Trump’s announcement noting that it “regrets” his decision to end U.S. involvement in the organization, has yet to comment on Milei’s move to end Argentina’s participation in the organization.

While the U.S. withdrawal could prove detrimental to the organization as it is the WHO’s single biggest contributor and is reported to have provided nearly 15% of the agency’s total two-year budget, donating $958 million towards the $6.5 billion budget ending in 2025, Argentina’s withdrawal is far less significant, the Associated Press reported.

According to local news outlet, the Buenos Aires Times, Argentina contributed between $8-$9 million a year to the WHO during 2022-2023 and 2024-2025, accounting for roughly a quarter of a percent of the budget annually.

“We Argentines are not going to allow an international organization to intervene in our sovereignty, much less in our health,” a spokesman for Milei’s office said during a Wednesday press conference, according to multiple reports.

WHO, GOOGLE TO COMBAT CORONAVIRUS MISINFORMATION

Despite the spokesman’s comments, the WHO holds no legal authority over a nation’s internal decisions, like issuing quarantine orders amid a pandemic, which both the first Trump administration and Milei’s predecessor issued.

But Argentina might not be the only country considering leaving the international health organization, as Italy’s deputy prime minister, Matteo Salvini, last month also proposed a bill that would follow Trump’s executive order.

Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, also a top ally of Trump and who attended his inauguration alongside Milei, has not publicly commented on the recent internal push to leave WHO.

Milei is expected to face opposition at home as his decision to withdrawal from WHO would require congressional approval – an argument that some have made in opposition to Trump’s unilateral move to sever ties with the international health organization.

Trump’s first attempt to withdraw the U.S. from WHO in 2020 was unsuccessful as President Biden took up the top job six months after he issued the order, and according to the charter signed by the U.S. in 1948, Washington must give the international body one year’s notice before leaving.

As the U.S. entered the U.N. organization by an act of Congress, it is believed that Trump would need Congress to agree to the withdrawal, which means he could face a future lawsuit over his attempts to remove the U.S. unilaterally from the WHO.

The WHO did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s questions.

EXCLUSIVE: US ally cautions world against doubting Trump’s ‘shockingly innovative’ Gaza proposal

UNITED NATIONS — President Donald Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. “take over” the Gaza Strip has garnered negative reactions across the globe and even from within his own party.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó, however, doesn’t think the world should be so quick to dismiss President Trump’s proposal. Szijjártó compared the Gaza proposal to another one of Trump’s “shockingly innovative” ideas to a paradigm-shifting move the president made shortly before leaving office in 2020.

“I would like to remind everyone that when President Trump announced his plan regarding the Abraham Accords, there was hardly anyone in the world who would have believed in the success in those agreements, right? And at the end of the day, he made it, and the Abraham Accords have brought a totally new dimension to the life of the Middle East,” Szijjártó told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

TRUMP SAYS US WILL ‘TAKE OVER’ GAZA STRIP, REBUILD IT TO STABILIZE MIDDLE EAST

The Abraham Accords saw Israel sign treaties with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan. There was speculation that had President Trump won the 2020 election, Saudi Arabia would have been next to sign a treaty. However, the Saudis made it clear on Tuesday that the country would not forge ties with Israel without the establishment of a Palestinian state.

“This is maybe the most complicated issue nowadays in the world, how to make long-term peace in the Middle East,” Szijjártó said, adding that “when it comes to President Trump, I would not exclude anything.”

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu became the first foreign dignitary to visit the White House since President Trump’s return to the Oval Office. His visit came as Israel continues to grapple with the aftermath of Hamas’ Oct. 7 massacre nearly 16 months later.

During a joint press conference with Netanyahu, Trump announced his proposal to have the U.S. “take over” the Gaza Strip, saying it would give the Palestinians an opportunity to “live out their lives in peace and harmony.”

HAMAS, WHICH SPARKED WAR WITH ISRAEL, SAYS TRUMP’S REBUILD GAZA PLAN IS A ‘RECIPE FOR CREATING CHAOS’

“The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it, too,” Trump said. “We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous, unexplored bombs and other weapons on the site.”

“Level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings, level it out, create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area,” he added. “Do a real job, do something different, just can’t go back. If you go back, it’s going to end up the same way it has for 100 years.”
