    Walmart shareholders send letter of support for reigning in DEI policies

    FIRST-ON-FOX: Walmart investors supportive of the company’s decision to roll back its DEI initiatives have issued a letter urging the big box retailer to stay the course as it faces immense backlash from Democratic officials and left-wing shareholders.

    The letter — which was drafted by the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative group, and signed by a collection of over 60 investors, advisors and proxy consultant groups — hails Walmart’s decision to roll back DEI, saying the decision “restores the promise of the American Dream.”

    ADF senior counsel Jeremy Tedesco told Fox News Digital he hopes the letter will give Walmart the “courage and the arguments they need to continue with what was a very good decision.”

    A group of investors sent a letter to Walmart to support their decision to roll back their DEI policies. 

    “Walmart, the best decision for them, is to put DEI in the dustbin of bad corporate policy decisions,” Tedesco said.

    The retailer announced in November that they would be reigning in their DEI policies, joining a growing list of corporations that have scaled back their DEI initiatives. Walmart vowed to remove certain third-party transgender products inappropriately marketed towards children from their online stores, and review grants given to Pride events to avoid sexualized programming targeted towards children.

    Walmart also ended its participation in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality index, which grades companies on its LGBTQ policies, and vowed to cease using the terms “LatinX” and “DEI” in official communications.

    CATERPILLAR MAKES POLICY CHANGES IN YET ANOTHER CORPORATE DEI ROLLBACK

    “Like many companies all across the U.S., we’ve been on a journey,” Furner said. “We’ll continue to be on a journey. And what we’re trying to do is to ensure every customer, every associate feels welcomed here in the shop and to feel like they belong,” Walmart US CEO and President John Furner told CBS Mornings in November.

    The letter was drafted in response to a previous letter drafted by 30 Walmart shareholders blasting their DEI rollbacks.

    “Seeing the company retreat from its stated values and the business opportunities associated with a diverse and inclusive workforce is very disheartening, additionally, Walmart has not offered a financial or business case for this change in policy, but the company identified advancing ‘belonging, diversity, equity and inclusion’ as one of four priority ESG issues that offer the greatest potential for Walmart to create shared value,” the signatories wrote in January.

    Walmart, which is the country’s largest private employer, was targeted by 13 Democratic state attorneys general, which also sent a letter the day after the left-wing shareholders pressed the retailer to reconsider its decision to eliminate many of its DEI initiatives.

    “Threats to boycott, sue or otherwise negatively impact Walmart’s bottom line may well have contributed to your decision to walk away from your commitments to DEI. But we are concerned that Walmart failed to consider the other side — the customers and employees that will be alienated by this departure,” the state AG’s wrote.

    Bowyer Research fund president Jerry Bowyer says that Walmart was “smart” to move away from DEI and feels that Democratic-led states are attempting to intimidate the retailer into backsliding on DEI by throwing their weight and pension money around.

    Bowyer, a signatory to the letter, said Walmart meant well in adopting DEI in the wake of George Floyd’s death, but failed to “read the fine print” on how these policies would require them to “stop treating people equally.”

    Inspire Investing CEO Robert Netzly, told Fox News Digital that his firm, which represents faith-based investors from across the country, signed the letter because his clients have “deep concerns” about DEI and view the policies as “immoral” and “divisive.”

    “Those policies not only hurt the people who work there by providing an unfair and discriminatory environment, but also introduce legal risks and shareholder risk from [a] financial standpoint,” he said.

    Walmart didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

    Canned tuna recall: Trader Joe’s, H-E-B, Walmart, Publix products impacted

    If you’ve recently purchased canned tuna at Trader Joe’s, H-E-B, Costco or Walmart, you may want to throw it out.

    That’s because a manufacturer of canned tuna products recently issued a country-wide recall of its products over a design concern that could potentially cause botulism.

    Tri-Union Seafoods initiated the recall on Feb. 7, according to a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) press release. The recall impacts canned tuna products sold under the Genova, Van Camp’s, H-E-B and Trader Joe’s brand names.

    The brands of the recalled products, as well as the states and stores they were sold in, are listed below:

    The manufacturer said that the recall was “out of an abundance of caution” after it was alerted to a defect in its cans.

    “This voluntary recall is out of an abundance of caution following the notification from our supplier that the ‘easy open’ pull tab can lid on limited products encountered a manufacturing defect that may compromise the integrity of the product seal (especially over time), causing it to leak, or worse, be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning,” the press release detailed.

    “Consumers are warned not to use the product even if it does not look or smell spoiled.”

    According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), botulism can result in difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and – in the most severe cases – death.

    “When people eat these foods [contaminated with Clostridium botulinum], they can become seriously ill, or even die, if they don’t get proper medical treatment quickly,” the CDC’s website notes.

    Tri-Union Seafoods advised consumers to immediately seek medical attention if they feel unwell after eating one of the affected products – though no such case has been reported so far.

    “If you have a recalled tuna can, please return it to the retailer for a full refund, throw it away, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product,” the statement concluded. “Consumers can contact Tri-Union Seafoods at [email protected] or 833-374-0171, if they have any questions or to request replacement product.”

    Tri-Union Seafoods did not immediately respond to FOX Business’ request for comment.

    Walmart to cut jobs, relocate some employees to Arkansas, California hubs

    Exclusive: Walmart – the nation’s largest private employer – is eliminating hundreds of roles and closing one of its North Carolina offices as it continues to pull workers back to its main hubs in California and Arkansas, according to an internal memo seen by FOX Business on Tuesday.

    Walmart Chief People Officer Donna Morris said in the memo sent to employees that the company is cutting roles and asking office-based employees in Hoboken and some of its smaller offices to relocate to the company’s newly opened headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas, as well as its office in Sunnyvale, California.

    “We are making these changes to put key capabilities together, encouraging speed and shared understanding,” Morris said in the memo. “Through this review process, we have eliminated some roles as we streamline how we work.”

    Walmart didn’t specify how many people will be affected, as the employees who are being asked to relocate will have at least a month to inform the company if they plan to move to the main hubs.

    The decision announced on Tuesday is part of a broader relocation strategy unveiled in May 2024, when Walmart initiated the first phase of relocating employees by asking staff from offices in Dallas, Atlanta and Toronto to move to Walmart’s corporate headquarters in Bentonville, its Hoboken, New Jersey, office or its California location. Any employees still working remotely at that time were also called back to the office.

    Walmart began requiring workers to return to the office in February 2022, saying it boosts collaboration, innovation and faster work processes, while also strengthening company culture.

    As the corporate world began to ditch remote work, Walmart constructed a new 350-acre campus in Bentonville, where it opened office buildings last month. The campus has 12 office buildings, along with amenity buildings, parking decks and surface lots.

    The company is also opening new office spaces in Sunnyvale and Bellevue, Washington, while expanding its office in Hoboken and its fashion office in New York City.

    “Our values and culture are strategic differentiators for us as a company, and they are fostered by being together,” Morris said in the memo. “We’ve already seen the benefits of having more teams working together in person, and today we are sharing another step that will help accelerate our momentum.”

    FDA escalates Walmart broccoli recall

    A recall over Walmart-sold broccoli florets has been escalated to Class I, the highest threat level, as consumers are warned to discard the food products over potential contamination.

    Braga Fresh has been recalling some packages of its ready-to-eat 12oz Marketside Broccoli Florets since Dec. 27. The FDA announced the recall on Dec. 31 and recently upgraded its classification. 

    Class I recalls, which are the most serious category of FDA food recalls, refer to “situation[s] in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

    The recall only pertains to 12oz bags of Marketside Broccoli Florets sold at Walmart stores. The recalled products have a UPC code of “6 81131 32884 5” on the back of the bag, and a best-by date of Dec 10, 2024. The products also contain a a lot code of “BFFG327A6”.

    “All potentially affected products are past their expiration date and no longer for sale,” the Braga Foods statement read. “This voluntary advisory does not apply to any other Marketside or Braga Fresh produced products.”

    “This product is past its [best-by date] and is no longer in stores, but consumers may have frozen the item for later use,” the release added. “Consumers who have this product in their freezers should not consume and discard the product.”

    According to the statement, the recall was initiated “due to possibility of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.” 

    “The potential for contamination was discovered during random sampling by Texas Health & Human Services from a Texas store location where one of multiple samples yielded a positive test result,” the statement read.

    The Walmart locations that received the potentially affected product are located in Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

    Though no illnesses have been reported in connection to the products, Listeria monocytogenes can lead to listeriosis, which is especially deadly to pregnant women, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

    “Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,” the FDA said in a statement.

    Some Walmart managers are making over $600K

    Certain Walmart managers are getting a pay bump, pushing their total compensation, including stock grants and bonuses, to well over $600,000. 

    The nation’s largest private employer is raising the salary range for its market managers, who supervise store managers in about a dozen locations, from $130,000–$260,000 to $160,000–$260,000. However, Walmart said that the majority of the 440 market managers across the U.S. already fall within the new pay range. 

    The company is also raising its annual stock grant from $75,000 to $100,000 and increasing its bonus potential to up to 100% of their salary. That’s up from 90%.  

    Altogether, that totals around $620,000.

    “Walmart is increasing base pay, bonus opportunity and annual stock awards for our Market Managers,” Walmart said in a statement, adding that the role is “key for our business and for serving our customers however they shop.”

    The changes will take effect at the start of fiscal year 2026, which means the 100% bonus potential will be reflected in their March 2025 payout. Employees will also get the $100,000 stock grant in April 2025, according to Walmart. 

    This marks the latest in a series of investments the company has made in its hourly and salaried roles that began in 2015. It also comes after a solid rise in wages and strong retail sales growth in December, as U.S. employers hired more workers in a generally tight labor market.

    Beginning on Feb. 1, the current average salary for store managers of $117,000 will be raised to $128,000, the retail giant said. Additionally, the annual bonus could be as high as 200% of base salary, if managers meet certain targets and profit metrics. 

    The company also launched a new bonus program for store hourly associates.

    Walmart’s minimum wage across the company is $14 an hour, although starting pay can be as high as $19 an hour depending on the store location.
