  • Vance: US air traffic control systems antiquated, looks like video game

Vance: US air traffic control systems antiquated, looks like video game

Vice President JD Vance said the United States’ air traffic control (ATC) systems are outdated and must be upgraded following the rise in close calls in recent years and the two deadly air tragedies that struck the U.S. in the past week.

During an exclusive interview with FOX News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” host Maria Bartiromo asked the vice president what could be done about the shortage of air traffic controllers as well as the use of traffic management systems that are decades-old while America’s allies utilize more modern technology.

“The software point is really important, though, because we know if you look at these old, antiquated air traffic control systems, it really does look like a video game. It’s 30 years old. We’ve got better software,” Vance said. “We need a federal government that’s more responsive to the technology that’s out there. And I really do think that with President Trump’s leadership, we’re going to have those near-misses and those almost terrible tragedies – those are going to come down, which means our aviation system is going to be much safer.”

INSIDE THE DC PLANE CRASH INVESTIGATION: AIR TRAFFIC STAFF A ‘SMALL PIECE’ OF ‘VERY BIG PUZZLE,’ OFFICIAL SAYS

The vice president’s statements come after two aviation disasters happened in the U.S., including the collision of a military Black Hawk helicopter with an American Airlines jet in Washington, D.C., last week. A private plane also plummeted out of the sky in Pennsylvania on Friday.

A report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in September warned that the FAA urgently needed to upgrade its ATC systems, pointing out that the year before, the GAO flagged that 51 of the FAA’s 138 systems are “unsustainable.”

PRELIMINARY DC PLANE CRASH FLIGHT DATA SHOWS CONFLICTING ALTITUDE READINGS: INVESTIGATORS

“Over half of these unsustainable systems are especially concerning, but FAA has been slow to modernize,” the GAO report states. “Some system modernization projects won’t be complete for another 10-13 years. FAA also doesn’t have plans to modernize other systems in need—3 of which are at least 30 years old.”

The Trump administration, which has been in office for two weeks, has vowed to make the necessary upgrades to the systems.

Newly confirmed Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told “Fox News Sunday” host Shannon Bream over the weekend that America’s skies remain the safest in the world, but he also said major changes could be made to improve the FAA’s systems.

“We have the safest skies in the whole world. Traveling by air is the safest mode of transportation,” Duffy said. “It’s not just air traffic controllers, but we do have technologies on airplanes to keep them separated. So, yeah, no, this is the safest system.”

Duffy went on to say that the U.S. system “does need to be upgraded.” He also noted an outage of the FAA’s pilot warning system, the “Notice to Air Mission” or NOTAM system, on Saturday night, calling it “antiquated.”

Moment IDF soldier is reunited with family seen on video

After 482 days in Hamas captivity, Agam Berger, one of the IDF soldiers kidnapped from an observation base during the Oct. 7 attacks, was reunited with her family in Israel. Berger was the last of the soldiers kidnapped from Nahal Oz base to remain in Hamas captivity.

In a video released by the IDF, Berger’s parents were seen rejoicing as they watched their daughter being greeted by Israeli forces prior to their own reunion with her.

Berger’s emotional reunion with her parents was also captured on video and released by the IDF.

“We’re here, and we will not leave you ever again,” Berger’s mother said, hugging her daughter. “It’s a mother’s promise.”

THIRD ROUND OF HOSTAGE RELEASES BEGINS AS PART OF HAMAS’ GAZA CEASEFIRE AGREEMENT WITH ISRAEL

Upon her return, Berger’s family celebrated the return of their “strong, faithful and brave” daughter, saying that they “can begin the healing process, but the recovery will not be complete until all the hostages return home.”

The soldiers who were kidnapped alongside Berger, Liri Albag, Naama Levy, Daniela Gilboa and Karina Ariev watched from Rabin Medical Center as Berger was released. The five of them were taken hostage together, and Hamas released the other four were released last Saturday as part of Israel and Hamas’ ceasefire deal.

Berger was one of seven hostages released on Thursday, including Arbel Yehoud, Gadi Moses, Thenna Pongsak, Sathian Suwannakham, Sriaoun Watchara, Seathao Bannawat, and Rumnao Surasak.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum celebrated their release in a statement, saying it brought “hope” and showed “the triumph of the human spirit,” while noting that “there are still 82 hostages held in Gaza that need to be saved.” The organization also thanked President Donald Trump, saying his “instrumental efforts made this deal possible.”

Additionally, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum also expressed concern over the “harrowing images” of the hostages’ transfers to the Red Cross.

“After 482 days of unimaginable terror and suffering, these individuals—who have already endured the unthinkable—must not be subjected to further danger,” the statement read. “This process, marked by cruelty and disregard for human dignity, must be unequivocally condemned. In these critical moments, every effort must be made to ensure their protection and immediate reunification with their loved ones.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also issued a statement about the “shocking scenes during the release of the hostages.”

“I see with great severity the shocking scenes during the release of our hostages,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “This is another proof of the unimaginable cruelty of the terrorist organization Hamas. I demand from the mediators to make sure that such threats will not happen again, and to guarantee the safety of our hostages. Whoever dares to harm our hostages – blood on his head.”

After the videos and images of the chaotic scenes became public, Netanyahu demanded that hostages be guaranteed a safe exit in the future and delayed the release of Palestinian prisoners until his demand was met. Mediators eventually made a commitment to ensure the safe transfer of hostages in future releases.

On Monday, Israel began allowing Palestinians to return to northern Gaza, the most heavily destroyed part of the territory, and hundreds of thousands streamed back. Many found only mounds of rubble where their homes had been.

In the first phase of the ceasefire, Hamas is set to release a total of 33 Israeli hostages, including women, children, older adults and sick or wounded men, in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. Israel says Hamas has confirmed that eight of the hostages to be released in this phase are dead.

School reacts to video of official telling parents to alter trans kid’s birth certificate to play girls sports

A Texas school district has acknowledged footage of one of its administrators telling an undercover journalist posing as a parent to change a transgender child’s birth certificate to compete in girls sports.

The Irving Independent School District in Irving, Texas, has provided a statement to Fox News Digital addressing the recent video of Reny Lizardo, the executive director of campus operations, giving this guidance, which was obtained by Accuracy in Media.

The statement indicates Lizardo has resigned from his position.

“In Irving ISD, we are committed to upholding the requirements of state and federal laws, especially as it pertains to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, and we will cooperate with any investigation initiated by relevant authorities,” the statement said.

“We are aware of the unauthorized video footage circulating on social media of an individual connected with Irving ISD. The videos were obtained under false pretenses by an individual who posed as a concerned parent and additional individuals who posed as family friends of the employee pictured.

“The individuals also held themselves out as members of the media, but were not credentialed as such, constituting a breach of security. In addition, the footage has been edited and is an incomplete representation of the entire conversation, making it difficult to properly assess its probative value.”

In the footage, Lizardo said, “It’s not illegal if you don’t get caught,” with regard to changing the gender on a child’s birth certificate, and “if you can get that done, and you turn us a birth certificate that says ‘this gender,’ that’s the gender we go with.”

While discussing potential repercussions of the discussion, Lizardo suggested pleading plausible deniability.

The district insists Lizardo’s handling of the situation does not reflect the values and protocols of the school district.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Lizardo for comment.

HOW TRANSGENDERISM IN SPORTS SHIFTED THE 2024 ELECTION AND IGNITED A NATIONAL COUNTERCULTURE

“We want to reiterate that Irving ISD complies with all state and federal laws, and all employees are expected to adhere to any and all legal and ethical standards. The message conveyed in the video, as presented, does not reflect the views nor policies of the district,” the statement said.

“Individual employees do not speak on behalf of the district. The individual identified was acting outside of his role as it relates to legal and regulatory expertise. While the matter continues to be under investigation, the individual identified in the video has tendered his resignation.”

The district’s statement concludes by claiming all of its athletes participate in the proper gender category.

“We can also confirm that all Irving ISD student-athletes are participating in their sport in accordance with the sex they were assigned at birth,” the district said. “Irving ISD is unwavering in our commitment to the safety and well-being of all of our students and staff. We remain focused on our primary function to maintain educational excellence and foster the full potential of our students.”

Texas is one of 25 states in the U.S. with a law that prevents or restricts transgender athletes from competing against girls and women. In June 2023, the state passed the Save Women’s Sports Act that prohibits transgender athletes from competing in girls and women’s sports and only allows students to compete in the gender category listed on their birth certificate.

The law only allows schools to recognize changes made to birth certificates that were made to correct a clerical error.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott addressed the footage involving Lizardo in a post on X and called for him to be fired and investigated.

“This Irving ISD Administrator should be fired on the spot. Both criminal & civil investigations must be taken against both the Administrator & Irving ISD,” Abbott wrote. “Has Irving ISD and its employees been involved in a fraudulent breach of state laws & a cover up? We must get the facts.”
