Candidate for Canadian prime minister pledges to target Tesla vehicles with 100% tariffs

A top Canadian lawmaker and candidate to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for a 100% tariff on Tesla vehicles in an effort to counter tariffs from President Donald Trump.

Chrystia Freeland worked as Trudeau’s finance minister until she resigned in January, now running to replace Trudeau as prime minister. The thrust of her economic policy urges Canada to inflict “the biggest trade blow that the United States has ever endured.”

“We are going to go after American stakeholders who matter to the White House,” Freeland told CNN this week. “I have proposed a 100 percent tariff on all Teslas. I am calling on all the countries that are affected by this tariff to join us, and our retaliation will target specific Trump constituencies.”

Freeland also targeted dairy farmers in Wisconsin, saying they are “important” to Trump.

“”We’re not going to let them sell their products in Canada anymore,” she said.

Freeland’s threats come after Trump issued pauses on the tariff plans against both Canada and Mexico. Both countries agreed to some capitulations in order to stave off the tariffs and give time for further negotiations.

Freeland’s call echoes sentiment from other Canadian officials as well. Canadian lawmaker Jagmeet Singh proposed that Canada should “fight back” against Trump’s tariff threat.

“Elon Musk has been very loud. Very vocal attacking our country. We’re not going to let that stand. So if you are going to take a shot at us, we’re going to fight back,” Singh told reporters earlier this week. “So Elon Musk thinks he can tweet off whatever he wants. Yeah, we’re going to put a tariff on him. I want that to be something that impacts him.”

CNN host Boris Sanchez spoke to Singh on Monday, asking about how Canadians feel about Trump’s talk of bringing Canada in as the 51st state. Singh noted that Canadians are known for being polite, but warned, “don‘t take our kindness for weakness” and said “hell no” to the proposal.

“I believe in being good neighbors and having good relationships, but I believe very firmly Donald Trump only understands force. He‘s acted as a bully in many circumstances, and now he‘s acting as an economic bully. The only language that bullies understand is the language of strength. So we have to show that we‘re ready to fight back,” Singh replied. “We might be smaller. We might be up against a larger opponent, but it‘s going to hurt both of us. It‘s a bad thing to do. It‘s going to hurt Americans. It‘s going to hurt Canadians. We need to show that it‘s the wrong thing to do, and also show that we‘re ready to fight back and defend what we have.”

Kia recalls EV and hybrid vehicles due to airbag issue caused by faulty wiring

Kia is recalling over 80,000 of its electric and hybrid vehicles over concerns about airbags, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced last week.

The recall pertains to 2023-2025 Niro EVs, Plug-in Hybrids (PHEVs), and Hybrid vehicles, according to the agency’s website.

“The floor wiring assembly [of recalled vehicles] beneath the front passenger seat may become damaged, which can prevent the front airbags and seat belts from deploying properly or cause an unintended side curtain airbag deployment,” the Jan. 17 statement read.

When an airbag deploys improperly or unintentionally, the risk of injury during a crash can increase, according to the NHTSA.

The recall covered all Telluride vehicles manufactured between 2020 and 2023 as well as some 2024 models. At the time, the NHTSA warned that the intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft on the vehicles “may not be fully engaged due to suspected improper assembly by the supplier.”

63,000 Jeep Cherokee vehicles recalled due to PTU concerns, officials say

Chrysler parent company Stellantis is recalling over 63,000 Jeep Cherokees due to issues with the vehicles’ power transfer units (PTUs), according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall is for Jeep Cherokee model years between 2017 and 2019.

“The power transfer unit (PTU) may become damaged and disengage the transmission and differential, resulting in a loss of drive power and/or loss of park function,” the NHTSA’s website explains.

According to the NHTSA, not only can a loss of drive power make crashes more likely, but the loss of a park function “can cause an unintended vehicle rollaway, which can increase the risk of a crash or injury.”

The agency noted that a remedy is still “under development.” Notification letters to affected owners will be mailed Feb. 13.

Last year, Chrysler recalled 338,238 Jeep Grand Cherokees due to a steering wheel issue that posed a significant safety hazard.

The recall pertained to the 2021 to 2023 model year Jeep Grand Cherokee L and 2022 to 2023 model year Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles.

Ford recalls over 272K vehicles due to battery failure issues

Ford is recalling more than 272,000 vehicles because the 12-volt batteries may have internal issues causing them to fail unexpectedly while driving.

According to a notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), certain 2021-2023 Ford Bronco Sport vehicles and 2022-2023 Ford Mavericks have been affected by the recall.

The agency said the car’s battery may have problems related to its internal connections or parts that hold the battery together. The issue could cause the car to fail to start after an automatic stop or start. The car could also stall when slowing to a stop, according to NHTSA.

As of Nov. 20, Ford was not aware of any accidents, fires or injuries related to the battery issue. However, the agency warned that the issue could increase the risk of a crash.

The automaker was first notified of the issue in September 2024 when it received an informal inquiry from NHTSA’s Office of Defect Investigation related to 19 reports alleging a loss of power. The issue was brought to Ford’s Critical Concern Review Group in October 2024.
