Valentine’s Day 2025: Catch a glimpse of northern lights at THESE places in US; details

If you’re hoping to experience the aurora on Valentine’s Day, here’s some good news for you! The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center has predicted solar G1 geomagnetic storm conditions for Thursday evening, leading to aurora displays on Earth by Friday.

According to a report by ABC News on the planetary K-index, which measures the intensity of geomagnetic storms on a scale from zero to nine, a “G1” is categorized as minor, according to NOAA.

Where will Auroras be visible in the US?

According to NOAA’s aurora viewing map, states such as Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Alaska could experience the northern lights in the coming days, provided conditions are favourable.

The report said that depending on the intensity of the solar storm, the auroras might even stretch as far south as northern Michigan and Maine.

    How Auroras are formed?

Auroras, also known as the northern and southern lights, are formed when charged particles from the Sun, mainly electrons and protons, interact with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere.

Solar Wind: The Sun constantly releases a stream of charged particles called the solar wind. When solar activity increases, such as during a solar flare or coronal mass ejection, a large number of these particles are sent toward Earth.

Auroras, also known as the northern and southern lights, are formed when charged particles from the Sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field.

Magnetic Field Interaction: As the solar wind reaches Earth, the planet’s magnetic field (the magnetosphere) channels these particles toward the poles, where the magnetic field lines converge.

According to NOAA, the most recent geomagnetic storm will be primarily driven by a high solar wind event. This same solar wind event also triggered a previous G1 storm on Sunday, the report said.

  • Valentine’s Day: Embrace love beyond romance for better mental well-being

Valentine’s Day: Embrace love beyond romance for better mental well-being

Valentine’s Day is for lovers — but you don’t need a romantic soulmate to celebrate. The holiday is a chance to consider just how rich, diverse and beneficial every form of love is in the human experience, whether it comes from your family, friends, pets, neighbours or community.

This Valentine’s Day, focus on nurturing various relationships beyond romance.(Pexels)

Three experts shared how to nurture love in all its forms at a time when loneliness is an ” epidemic,” politics are divisive and turning to technology is often easier forreal-life social interactions.

You need more than just “the” love of your life

Romantic love — a deep, intimate partnership with another person or persons — is a valuable part of life. But experts say it’s good to remember that we need to have several sources of connection. “Especially as we get older, we recognize that no one relationship is going to provide us with everything,” said Mikaela Frissell, a social worker for UT Health Austin.

Love isn’t something that can easily be pinned down with a single definition or behaviour, either. As a verb, love has two things at play, according to epidemiologist Tyler VanderWeele, who directs Harvard University’s Human Flourishing Program. It can be both or either “unitive” — meaning you desire and want to be with the person or thing you love — or “contributive,” meaning you want to contribute to the good of your beloved.

The experts also said an expanded definition and view of love opens up the possibilities toward whom and what you can direct these “unitive” and “contributive” feelings.

The connection between love, loneliness and health

In 2023, then-U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy declared loneliness a public health epidemic. Murthy’s report said half of Americans have experienced loneliness and that it poses health risks as deadly as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. The research also found that people with poor social relationships had higher risk of stroke and heart disease, and that isolation raises a person’s chance of depression, anxiety and dementia.

Love’s strong social connections, bonding and support are linked to better health, because it allows the brain to signal to the body that you are safe and take your nervous system out of “fight or flight,” Frissell said. Research shows being with loved ones can lower blood pressure, stress hormones, reduce inflammation — even help you sleep and better manage pain.

The ongoing Harvard Study of Adult Development, which is the underpinning of the book “The Good Life,” showed the value of relationships across a lifetime. Anthony Chambers, a psychologist and chief academic officer at The Family Institute at Northwestern University, said one of the Harvard study’s findings was people who were happiest in their relationships at 50 were the healthiest mentally and physically at 80.

“The conclusion? Building meaningful and satisfying relationships is key to our health and well-being,” said Chambers, who worked on the study early in his career.

    How can I nurture love?

Simply put, intentionally seek out in-person connections, experts said. What’s not so simple is planning things with other people. It may be uncomfortable to sift through calendars to find a date for dinner with a busy friend or to call your sibling who doesn’t have much to talk about. Perhaps it’ll be awkward to strike up a conversation with the elderly neighbour you haven’t met or join a softball team.

Acknowledge and interrogate the fears or assumptions that keep you from reaching out in those moments, Frissell said. There is also doing good things for other people — even if you don’t know them that well. Frissell challenges clients to compliment someone every day and be open to accepting one in return. The benefits of receiving and giving love are the same, she said.

VanderWeele recommends an exercise he practices: Choose one day a week, for six weeks, to do five acts of kindness. It forces you to plan and prioritize kindness intentionally, just like any other daily task, he said.

    Love can build resilience

This Valentine’s Day, experts encourage you to think beyond one-on-one relationships and reflect on your community and world. Having a commitment to a cause or group builds mental resilience, they added.

“We all seek to be understood and validated, especially during difficult times. And relationships are arguably the most important context for emotional healing,” Chambers said. “When the world around us can seem to be in chaos or we’re feeling alone, relationships provide the opportunity for us to feel validated.”

VanderWeele also said it’s important to have even “love of enemy” — people who we don’t agree with or are in opposition to us. “The extent to which we love others well, we love our neighbours well, shapes the society we live in,” he said.

Delving into murky origins of Valentine’s Day: How it became the day of love, was St Valentine a real person, and more

Bearing cards, flowers, chocolates and poetry, lovers have always swooned on Valentine’s Day as cherubs circled overhead. Right? Or is the history darker, marked by Roman bacchanalia, martyrs and lies?

Innumerable legends claim to explain the origins of Valentine’s Day, but as is the case with legends, they leave many questions unanswered. Here are a few:

    Where did Valentine’s Day originate?

For years, the consensus among historians was that the holiday had something to do with an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia that fell in mid-February. Noel Lenski, a Yale University historian, pointed to the seasonal and thematic connections between Lupercalia and modern Valentine’s Day.

Both are erotic festivals, in a sense, but the ancient one — which included pairing off women and men by lottery — also involved religious purification and atonement.

“Naked young men, drunk, would go running around Palatine Hill swatting virginal women with strips of dog fur and goat fur to make them fertile,” Lenski said.

According to one legend, Pope Gelasius wanted to put an end to the debauchery in the late fifth century. He declared Feb. 14 as the feast day of a St. Valentine, who had been martyred about 200 years before.

But that theory emerged in an 1807 book without any evidence to support the connection, said Elizabeth White Nelson, a University of Nevada Las Vegas history professor.

“People who think that’s the story haven’t read the letter that he actually wrote about Lupercalia,” she said, referring to the pope. “Is he pissed off about Lupercalia? Yeah. But does it have anything to do with St. Valentine? It’s very, very hard to find any actual writing that says that.”

Was St Valentine a real person?

The most cited legend is about a priest named Valentine who was executed in third-century Rome for marrying couples against the will of the pagan Emperor Claudius II. (He also is said to have cured the blindness of his jailer’s daughter.) Another St Valentine, the bishop of Terni, was martyred around the same time, but little is known about him.

A couple of centuries later, a prominent family named Valentine may have promoted themselves by exaggerating an ancestor’s story after Christianity had become the prevailing religion, Lenski said.

“They say, ‘Oh, by the way, we have this famous ancestor who was a bishop, and he had been persecuted by the emperor for sanctifying marriages,’” he said.

The story prevailed, but the lack of evidence prompted the Catholic Church in 1969 to remove St Valentine as the primary saint celebrated on Feb. 14. Now, it’s officially the feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the missionary brothers who spread the Cyrillic alphabet to Eastern Europe.

What’s love got to do with it?

To further confuse things, there were many St. Valentines. As many as 50 saints with some variation of the spelling have been recognized by the Catholic Church, said Henry Kelly, a research professor at the University of California Los Angeles.

According to Kelly, author of “Chaucer and the Cult of Saint Valentine,” the English writer was the first to make the connection to love — but he was talking about another St. Valentine whose feast day was May 3. To commemorate King Richard II’s engagement on that day in 1381, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote a love poem.

“He had Italian friends who told him that it was the feast of St. Valentine, the first bishop of Genoa,” Kelly said. “And so he picked that day as the day on which all the birds returned to choose their mates for the year.”

Chaucer continued writing poems every May that associated love, the rites of spring and St. Valentine. Shakespeare and other poets followed suit. Because the Roman Valentine was the most famous one, people conflated the feast days and now celebrated it in February, Kelly said.

“It was the middle of winter, so there weren’t any birds around, there weren’t any flowers around, and so they started making up things about Valentine,” he said.

When did it become the Valentine’s Day we recognize today?

By the late 18th century, the tradition had solidified in England and spread to the United States, with people writing poetry and hand-making cards, White Nelson said. Around the 1830s, companies began manufacturing Valentine kits that were assembled from lace paper and cutouts of birds and cupids.

Heart-shaped boxes of chocolates would come a few decades later, as would the accusations that the holiday was created to sell cards, flowers and candy, White Nelson said. People were complaining in women’s magazines in the late 19th century that Valentine’s Day was too commercial.

“Everybody’s always expecting Valentine’s Day to die out, and it never does,” she said. “It’s sort of like saying, ‘Coney Island’s too crowded. Nobody goes there anymore.’”

To be fair, none of the myth-busting historians interviewed for this article resented that a day celebrating love ended up in February. In fact, they said the opposite.

“Winter is endless,” Kelly said. “The cold is never ending, and we’re grateful for something to rejoice over.”

Kelly just gives his wife another Valentine on May 3.
