2025 air travel is off to a deadly start with four plane crashes

2025 has seen four major plane crashes in recent weeks.

The four incidents have occurred in Toronto, Alaska, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Of those crashes, three resulted in fatalities, according to reports.

Different operators were involved in each of the incidents.

Delta Air Lines Flight 4819 crash-landed Monday at the Toronto Pearson International Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and the airline.

Video of the incident captured the plane rolling upside down during the crash and continuing to slide down the runway.

The flight, operated by Delta’s regional subsidiary, Endeavor Air, had 76 passengers and four crew on board the CRJ-900 at the time of the incident.

There were no fatalities in the crash. However, 21 travelers on the plane at the time were taken to the hospital, all but three of which have since been released, according to a Tuesday morning update from Delta.

“Our most pressing priority remains taking care of all customers and Endeavor crew members who were involved. We’ll do everything we can to support them and their families in the days ahead, and I know the hearts, thoughts and prayers of the entire Delta community are with them,” CEO Ed Bastian said in a statement.

The FAA said Canada’s Transportation Safety Board is heading up an investigation into the crash.

    Bering Air Flight 445

The Coast Guard located missing Bering Air Flight 445 on Feb. 7 after it crashed nearly three dozen miles southwest of Nome, Alaska.

The plane had disappeared the previous day while traveling to the Nome Airport from the Unalakleet Airport, FOX Weather reported.

The 10 people on the plane died in the crash, according to officials.

“The tragic accident that occurred on February 6, 2025, has shaken us all to our core,” Bering Air said in a statement on its website. “This has been an unprecedented event for both our team and our customers, and we are truly heartbroken by the loss.”

“Our hearts are with all those affected by this heartbreaking event, and we extend our most sincere condolences, thoughts, and prayers to everyone involved. We will continue to honor and remember those we’ve lost, and we remain steadfast in our dedication to serving the public with the utmost care and compassion.”

A motorist on the ground also died, the city said.

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of life and my thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims, as well as each person injured by this terrible tragedy,” Mayor Cherelle Parker said in a Feb. 1 statement.

Two dozen people on the ground sustained injuries due to the crash.

It also caused heavy fire at some homes and vehicles, the city said.

Attorney General Pam Bondi to travel to New Orleans to survey Super Bowl LIX security

Pam Bondi will spend her first full day as U.S. attorney general Thursday traveling to New Orleans to survey security of the Super Bowl game this Sunday, Fox News has learned.

Her trip is part of an effort to highlight the administration’s broader commitment to crack down on violent crime and acts of terrorism.

Bondi will be accompanied by Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, the Justice Department said, where she will meet with multiple law enforcement groups at the federal and local level, including DOJ components and the FBI field office.

Her visit comes less than two months after a man used a vehicle to ram through crowds on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early New Year’s Day, killing at least 14 people and injuring more than 30 others in what FBI officials said was being investigated as an act of terrorism.

While in New Orleans, Bondi plans to conduct briefings during the visit related to preventing another terrorist attack in New Orleans, DOJ officials told Fox News.

The visit comes as Bondi looks to move on her Day One prioritie— among them, cracking down on terrorist-linked or inspired attacks on U.S. soil.

  • How to minimize your digital footprint when you travel

How to minimize your digital footprint when you travel

Those of us old enough to remember traveling before the age of smartphones and mobile internet know we have it pretty good these days. You can find the best flights using comparison sites, choose among hundreds of hotels on a single booking site, get tickets sent to your phone rather than picking them up in person, check in online, order a ride and you’re off.

All this, of course, comes with downsides and trade-offs.

Most people’s biggest concerns are “getting hacked,” which, when you get down to it, really means “being robbed in ways I don’t quite understand.” But that’s one of those risks that, although very real, is unlikely to happen if you take the usual precautions.

The dangers few think about until it’s too late

In a time when personal information is said to be worth more than oil, bad actors are often interested in getting their hands on your personal data as much as your money. And a “bad actor” need not be some guy with his hood up, hunched over a laptop in the back of a coffee shop.

In 2024, for example, ClassAction.org reported on suspicions of major cruise lines illegally sharing consumers’ data with Facebook. Cruise lines RoyalCaribbean.com, CelebrityCruises.com, Princess.com and HollandAmerica.com are suspected of collecting personal information through the sneaky “Meta tracking pixel” and sending it to Facebook without users’ consent.

Booking.com, a site most of us have used at one time or another, has also had its fair share of problems. The website has been battling waves of hacking attacks aimed at defrauding its customers; it’s faced accusations of not doing enough to protect its customers and has even been fined for failing to disclose a data breach on time.

Data gathered from these kinds of incidents often ends up circulating online, being added to what was already out there before, just waiting for someone or some company to make use of it.

THE BEST TRAVEL GEAR FOR 2025

What you can do to protect your personal data

Avoiding cruise lines and booking sites altogether is hardly a practical solution when you need to book a cruise or accommodation. Here are some things you can do to dramatically reduce the risk when booking flights, cruises, vehicles and accommodation.

    1. Invest in personal data removal services: While no service promises to remove all your data from the internet, having a removal service is great if you want to constantly monitor and automate the process of removing your information from hundreds of sites continuously over a longer period of time. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

    2. Use personal security caution: Don’t sign in to anything using your social media accounts. Sign in with your email instead and be sure to use an email address you’ve set aside just for these kinds of situations.

    3. Do your homework online: Do an online search for the booking website, cruise line or travel agency in question, keeping an eye out for any recent reports of scams or other issues.

    4. Check company reputation carefully: Check ClassAction.org, the Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot specifically. This will help you gain comprehensive insights into a company’s track record, customer experiences and potential issues.

    5. Verify communication legitimacy: Whenever you receive a call, email or text message from a booking service, confirm that it’s really them by first checking your account directly and then contacting the company through official, publicly listed channels (not social media).

    BEST TRAVEL ADAPTERS OF 2025

More ways to protect yourself online when traveling: Here’s how to stay safe

Here are some of the “usual precautions” that can protect you from “getting hacked” while traveling.

    1. Update all your apps and operating systems before heading off: All those security patches are that much more important while you’re traveling. You’ll want to download and install all pending updates at least 24-48 hours before your departure, ensuring you have the latest security protections and giving yourself time to troubleshoot any potential update-related issues that might arise.

    2. Lock everything down: Use strong, unique passwords and a reliable password manager to keep track of them.

    3. Turn on two-factor authentication where available: Prioritize using authenticator apps over SMS-based codes. This provides a more secure second layer of verification, as authenticator apps are less vulnerable to SIM swapping attacks and interception compared to text message-based authentication. Choose reputable authenticator apps, which generate time-based one-time passwords that change frequently and are tied directly to your device.

    4. Keep location services turned off: NFC, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi should also be turned off while you’re not using them. That’ll make your battery last longer as a side benefit.

    5. Go dark: Don’t publicly share news of your trip until you’re back. Avoid posting about your vacation on social media or keeping a blog about your adventures, as this information can be used by criminals to piece together a snapshot of your life.

    WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

    6. Limit social media use: Scammers and hackers often exploit social media to gather personal information and target travelers. To stay secure, avoid sharing trip details publicly and use a privacy-focused messaging app like Signal to stay in touch with family and friends.

    7. Use privacy-focused browsers: You should consider using browsers like Brave or Firefox with privacy extensions. Enabling “do not track” settings and utilizing private/incognito mode can provide an extra layer of digital protection.

    8. Disable automatic Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections: Disable settings that automatically connect to networks and manually select and verify networks before connecting. This prevents your device from inadvertently joining potentially unsecured networks.

    9. Use encrypted messaging and email: Protect your private communications by using services that offer end-to-end encryption for both messaging and email. These platforms ensure your data remains secure from unauthorized access, with features like encryption for non-users, multifactor authentication and tracking protection. See my review of the best secure and private email services here.

    10. Travel with minimal digital gear: Consider bringing a “travel-only” phone or laptop with minimal personal data.

    11. Be cautious of public charging stations: Avoid using public USB charging ports that could potentially compromise your device. Instead, carry a portable phone charger with you.

    12. Monitor your accounts: Set up transaction alerts on financial accounts and use credit cards with strong fraud protection. Regularly check your accounts while traveling to quickly detect any suspicious activity.

    13. Bring your own internet access with you: Find a local or international SIM, a mobile hot spot and a trusted VPN (virtual private network) service for those times you can’t help but use public Wi-Fi. Using a VPN can enhance your privacy by encrypting your internet traffic, making it harder for hackers and third parties to intercept your data, especially on public Wi-Fi. A VPN masks your IP address, helping to obscure your location and online activity. While VPNs don’t directly prevent phishing emails, they reduce the exposure of your browsing habits to trackers that may use this data maliciously. With a VPN, you can securely access your email accounts from anywhere, even in areas with restrictive internet policies. For the best VPN software, see my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

5 WAYS TO SECURELY ACCESS WI-FI ON YOUR PHONE WHILE TRAVELING

    Kurt’s key takeaways

There’s plenty of good advice out there when it comes to avoiding public Wi-Fi and protecting your documents while traveling. To really stay safe, though, it’s important to start thinking about your data privacy and data security before even booking your trip. It doesn’t take much when all is said and done, but it could make a huge difference to how you remember your trip for years to come.

National Plan for Vacation Day encourages Americans to arrange travel plans

The last Tuesday of January is National Plan for Vacation Day, and one travel expert is urging Americans to use their time off offered by their employers.

Genevieve Shaw Brown met with FOX Business at Walt Disney World’s EPCOT to discuss upcoming Disney events and attractions, both in California and Florida, while emphasizing the importance of making memories rather than banking vacation time.

“A lot of times if you don’t use them, you lose them,” she said of vacation days. “We really want to make sure that people are taking advantage of their well-deserved time off.”

“Right now people are doing more at their jobs than they’ve ever done before, and you don’t want to burn out,” she continued. “To be your best self, you need to have balance and to take vacations and to make those memories.”

As far as specific vacation ideas, Shaw Brown noted that Disney’s popularity has grown so much and there is “always something going on” at the parks, meaning low visitation days do not really exist anymore like they used to.

She considers Disney to have great value for those young and old, solo and traveling with loved ones.

Disney is a big business in Florida, with Walt Disney World Resort generating $40.3 billion in economic impact, according to a study from Oxford Economics.

While Disney does not share specifics on visitation and resort bookings, the most recent Theme Index and Museum Index Global Attractions Attendance report released by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA)/AECOM says 244.6 million people visited the top 25 theme parks worldwide in 2023.

Disney Experiences ranked No. 1 in the top 10 amusement/theme park operators worldwide, according to the report. Of all four Walt Disney World parks, a Disney spokesperson told FOX Business that Magic Kingdom is the most visited.

Vacation travel is expected to continue shattering records this year, and not all of it will be by land. AAA projects 19 million Americans will sail the ocean blue on a cruise in 2025, marking a third straight record year, according to a press release.

Transportation Security Administration numbers from last year show the highest number of passengers screened at airport checkpoints was 3,088,836 on Dec. 1, 2024.

“You’re never going to regret the trip,” Shaw Brown said. “No vacation has to be perfect. It just has to be time away with your friends or your family, people you love or even by yourself, to just recharge and remember who you are outside of your work.”

  • ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘1923’ spark cowboy core travel trend, ‘people are flocking to the great outdoors’

‘Yellowstone’ and ‘1923’ spark cowboy core travel trend, ‘people are flocking to the great outdoors’

With the “Yellowstone” finale being the most-watched episode in the show’s history, and “1923” releasing its second season in February, the hit Western franchise has sparked a new interest in cowboy core travel, according to experts.

Fans of the show have flocked to Montana and Wyoming since its release in 2018, but travel trends seemed to have picked up after “Yellowstone” concluded its fifth season after a two-year hiatus.

“We always see an increase in interest to Wyoming and Montana when the show, or any of the spin-offs, drop new episodes,” Matt Appleby of Travelmation told Fox Business.

“Fans want to become a part of what they are seeing on their screens, and they book vacations seeking adventure and solitude. When you watch ‘Yellowstone’, you can’t help but dream about immersing yourself in nature and riding a horse on a ranch in the wilderness,” he continued.

“These shows have been so wonderful for our national parks. People are flocking to the great outdoors, and many travel companies are taking notice,” Appleby said. “There are places that will curate a unique experience involving adventure and even high-class dining for the cowboy foodies.”

In 2023, Lucy Beighle, director of communications for Glacier Country Tourism, told the Washington Post that the Western Montana region, where seasons four and five of “Yellowstone” were filmed, has seen an increase in travel.

“We always see an increase in interest to Wyoming and Montana when the show, or any of the spin-offs, drop new episodes.”

    – Matt Appleyby, Travelmation advisor

“We definitely have seen an uptick in interest because of ‘Yellowstone,’” Beighle said. “If Montana wasn’t already on the map, and if people have seen ‘Yellowstone,’ it certainly is now.”

The Washington Post reported that the Bureau of Business and Economic Research and the Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research at the University of Montana issued a study that found “Yellowstone” fans spent $730 million on tourism in 2021.

According to the study, two million people credited the Taylor Sheridan series as their reason for visiting Montana.

The outlet spoke to locals, including Hillary Folkvord, who explained that “Yellowstone” has “been good” for Montana and Wyoming.

“It shows how beautiful Montana is. And we hope to preserve that as stewards. That’s really important to us,” she noted.

“My friends from back East watch it religiously. And they tell me, ‘It looks so magical and majestic. It’s just wide-open spaces,’” she told the outlet. “I think that’s what people are craving right now. Montana gives you that.”

Carole Amos, a travel advisor for Travelmation, told Fox Business that “dude ranches” are drawing visitors to Montana and Wyoming so they can receive the “American frontier” experience.

“A dude ranch is one of the few places where you go completely off the grid and immerse yourself in America’s frontier. You can go horseback riding, fishing or square dancing, compete in a rodeo, herd cows and even learn how to shoot a gun if that interests you.

“I especially love a breakfast or lunch ride where you hop on a horse and head to the top of a mountain for a meal with an unforgettable view. You can also just sit on your cabin porch and take in the stunning scenery, which you can’t experience anywhere else,” she continued.

Amos emphasized that “you truly transform into a cowboy on a dude ranch.”

“Everyone has their boots, their hat, their flannel shirts and they show up ready for adventure,” she concluded.

“Yellowstone” starred John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and the Dutton family in their attempts to preserve their way of life and their family ranch in Montana. The show also starred Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser and Wes Bentley.
