Woman wins $2 million lottery prize after being given wrong ticket

A Virginia woman won an eye-popping sum after accidentally purchasing the wrong lottery ticket at a gas station.

Carrollton resident Kelly Lindsay bought the winning ticket at a Race Way station in her town in January. She was initially unhappy about “being given the wrong ticket,” she told officials, having wanted to play a different lottery game.

But that Money Blitz ticket ended up containing the correct numbers for the game’s second-place prize of $2 million. Lindsay scratched the ticket in the parking lot and soon learned of her good fortune.

“And I got over not being happy about it!” she joked.

Though she won the $2 million prize, she opted to take home a smaller amount all at once.

“Ms. Lindsay had the choice of taking the full $2 million prize in annual payments over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $1,250,000 before taxes,” the Virginia Lottery explained. She chose the cash option.”

According to the Virginia Lottery, one more top prize is still unclaimed. The chances of winning the top prize are less than one in a million.

“The chances of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,142,400,” the lottery noted. “The chances of winning any prize in this game are 1 in 3.29.”

The Virginia Lottery added that all profits go to supporting K-12 education in Old Dominion.

“Ms. Lindsay lives in Isle of Wight County, which received more than $3.7 million in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year,” the statement added. “In Fiscal Year 2024, the Lottery raised more than $934 million for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.”

Lindsay’s lottery win is one of many that have occurred by accident. Last fall, an Illinois lottery player won $9.2 million after playing the wrong game.

The ticket that might not be a ticket

First things first, not all “tickets” are created equal. If you receive something that looks like a ticket but doesn’t have the court’s full address or phone number – or worse, it says “Do not contact the court” – you might be dealing with what’s cheekily called a “snitch ticket.” These aren’t real tickets at all but rather attempts to get you to rat out whoever was actually driving. The dead giveaway is usually that they will say something like, “Courtesy Notice: This is not a ticket.”

Why are they playing this game?

Because cities often have to pay camera vendors for every ticket issued, whether or not they ever collect a dime. So, when the footage is too blurry to ID the driver, they toss out these “Whoops, was this you?” tickets, hoping you’ll do their homework for them. It’s basically a shady game of “Guess Who?” except you never agreed to play, the rules are rigged and the only prize is an unwanted fine.

Now what?

If you’ve received a “snitch ticket” (a fake ticket designed to get you to identify the driver), here’s what you can do.

Ignore it: Since it’s not a real ticket, you’re not legally obligated to respond. Many people simply disregard these notices.

Don’t identify the driver: Remember, you’re under no legal obligation to name who was driving your car.

Check for red flags: Confirm it’s a fake by looking for missing court information or the phrase “Do not contact the court regarding this notice.”

Stay informed: Keep the notice for your records, but don’t let it stress you out. It’s not a legal document.

Remember, these fake tickets are just fishing expeditions. You’re well within your rights to toss them in the recycling bin and go about your day.

‘But it’s not me!’ – What to do

If you receive a genuine ticket (one with all the court info) but you weren’t the driver, you’ve got options.

1) Contact the police (optional): You can try calling the number on the ticket and explaining the situation. But beware, they might pressure you to identify the actual driver.

2) Stand your ground: Remember, you’re not legally required to identify the driver. It’s not your job to play detective for them.

3) Go to court: If push comes to shove, you can always contest the ticket in court. Just be prepared for some potential pushback.

Eagles pummel Commanders, punch ticket to Super Bowl LIX with NFC Championship win

The Philadelphia Eagles are back in the Super Bowl after the dynamic duo of Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley combined for six rushing touchdowns in the 55-23 beatdown of the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship.

Philadelphia will wait to see who will represent the AFC in Super Bowl LIX, as the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills get underway in the Midwest on Sunday night.

Hurts and the Eagles were in the “Big Game” in 2022, where they lost to the Chiefs in Arizona. But what the Eagles didn’t have then was Barkley, the NFL’s leading rusher in 2024, and he showed why he might be the missing piece to win the Vince Lombardi after an incredible performance at home.

On just the first offensive snap for the Eagles in this game, following an 18-play Commanders opening drive that ended with a field goal, Barkley ripped off a 60-yard touchdown run to immediately put the Eagles up 7-3 after the extra point.

The Commanders’ response wasn’t a good one, as receiver Dyami Brown fumbled after a Zack Baun punch while tackling his opponent. And unfortunately for Washington, fumbles became a bad trend throughout this game.

The last time these two teams played, the Commanders turned the ball over five times. However, Jayden Daniels and the Commanders ended up winning on a last-second drive in a 22-point fourth quarter.

But the comeback didn’t happen this time with the turnovers, as Jeremy McNichols fumbled on a kick return near the end of the first half, and Austin Ekeler fumbled in the second half.

And all of those turnovers led to touchdowns.

Barkley scored from four yards out after the Brown fumble, and Hurts got his first tush push score of the game to make it 20-12 near halftime, he found A.J. Brown for his only passing touchdown of the content to take a solid 27-12 lead into the locker room.

The second half, though, is where things unraveled for Dan Quinn’s Commanders, as Hurts’ second touchdown on the ground was a nine-yard score in the third quarter to make it 35-14. And despite Daniels scoring on the ground himself to cut the lead a bit, Ekeler’s fumble saw another tush push touchdown for Hurts to make it three on the night.

With desperation on their sideline, Quinn had no choice but to force Daniels to go for it on every fourth down as the fourth quarter began, and Nolan Smith’s sack on fourth-and-11 ultimately led Barkley to his third touchdown with a four-yard run, which basically sealed the deal at 48-23.

The last-ditch effort from Daniels in the fourth was a deep ball down the left sideline to Terry McLaurin, who scored a 36-yard touchdown earlier in the game, but it was intercepted in the end zone by rookie Quinyon Mitchell.

The cherry on top for Philadelphia was, with the backups in the game, Will Shipley scoring a touchdown from two yards out after ripping a 57-yard run earlier in the drive.

Celebrations ensued for the home team, and rightfully so after incredible performances from Hurts (20-for-28 for 246 yards), Barkley (15 rushes for 118 yards) and Brown (six catches for 96 yards).

For the Commanders, Zach Ertz, the former Eagles tight end, certainly did his part with 11 catches for 104 yards. Daniels finished 29-for-48 for 255 yards, while rushing for 48 yards on six carries.
