Top Trump official teases 2026 bid for California governor if Harris jumps in race

One of President Donald Trump’s top aides is floating a potential bid for California governor if former Vice President Kamala Harris also runs.

Richard Grenell, a longtime Trump loyalist who is serving as U.S. envoy for special missions in the president’s second administration, ended a gaggle with reporters at the Munich Security Conference in Germany on Friday by teasing, “I’ll make a little news.”

Grenell then pointed to the 2026 race to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom of California.

“If Kamala Harris runs for governor, I believe that she has such baggage and hundreds of millions of dollars in educating the voters of how terrible she is, that it’s a new day in California and that the Republican actually has a shot,” Grenell said.

There has been plenty of speculation since Harris’ defeat last November, regarding her next political move, with the two potential options likely being launching a 2026 gubernatorial run in her home state of California or seeking the presidency again in 2028.

Harris served as San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general and U.S. senator before becoming vice president.

MAJOR CALIFORNIA DEMOCRAT PREEDICTS FORMER VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS WOULD CLEAR GUBERNATORIAL FIELD

Sources in the former vice president’s political orbit say no decisions have been made about any next steps.

The Democrats’ field for governor in the heavily blue-leaning state is already crowded.

Among the more than a half-dozen candidates already running for governor are Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, a Harris ally, and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Former Rep. Katie Porter, who unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic Senate nomination last year, has expressed interest in launching a campaign.

Former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, who served in Congress and as California attorney general before joining the Biden administration, is also seen as a potential contender.

But pundits predict that Harris could clear the Democrats’ field if she decides to launch a gubernatorial campaign.

It’s been nearly two decades since a Republican won statewide office in California. You have to go all the way back to former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 2006 re-election victory.

Grenell considered a run for California governor during the 2021 recall election that Newsom eventually ended up easily winning, but he ultimately decided against launching a campaign.

Grenell served as ambassador to Germany and as acting director of national intelligence during Trump’s first term.

In his role as U.S. envoy for special missions in Trump’s second administration, he took part in a mission to Venezuela that led to the release of six hostages.

Grenell also joined the president in Los Angeles last month to survey the horrific wildfire damage in the area. Grenell, who along with Trump blasted state and local Democratic leaders for their performance handling the wildfire crisis, returned to Los Angeles last week as he accompanied EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin on a recovery tour.

Grenell isn’t the only California Republican considering or moving toward a gubernatorial campaign in 2026 in the race to succeed Newsom.

In California, unlike most other states, the top two finishers in a primary, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the general election.

Super Bowl champ Nick Foles teases Tom Brady after Eagles’ latest triumph

Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles got one final jab in as his former team routed the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday night, 40-22.

Foles led the Eagles to a wild Super Bowl LII win over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots at the end of the 2017 season. Foles had a miraculous run as he was thrust into the starting role for Carson Wentz and somehow got the team its first Super Bowl title.

Brady was on the FOX call for Super Bowl LIX and Foles made sure to remind the seven-time Super Bowl winner about one of his three losses in the big game.

“It’s really cool that Tom Brady got to be there for the Eagles’ two Super Bowl wins! He might be a good luck charm,” Foles wrote in a post on X. “Have a great night!”

Foles and the Eagles’ win over Brady and the Patriots that year was thought to have sparked a rivalry between the two quarterbacks.

In 2022, before Brady played his final NFL game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the playoff against the Eagles, he touched on his own competitiveness.

“I try to be a good sport as best as I can,” Brady said at the time, via ESPN. “I know it doesn’t always look like that because sometimes I get a little p—ed out there, but for the most part, I try to be a good sport.”

During Super Bowl week this year, Brady touched on how losses impact a player’s career more. He admitted that Eagles fans never let him live that Super Bowl loss down.

“Then, you go to 2007 and you lose. And then, you go to 2011, and you go to the Super Bowl after having a great team in 2010, and we lose. And it was just like, ‘Wow, this is way harder.’ We went 10 years between winning,” Brady said on “The Herd.” “And I said, you know what, these Super Bowl moments I get a chance to partake in, I’m going to exhaust every bit of energy I have for this week of games, because when you lose this game, this is on your resume forever.

“A loss in the Super Bowl matters more than any loss that you’re ever going to be a part of. When I go in Philly and (the fans) go ‘Philly Special, Philly Special’ and I’m at the Knicks game with my son and Spike Lee, I throw him a ball, and he catches it on his head like the ‘Helmet Catch’ – that was 17 years ago, and I’m still living that thing down.”

  • White House economist teases the ‘biggest’ fiscal reform ‘America has ever seen’

White House economist teases the ‘biggest’ fiscal reform ‘America has ever seen’

President Donald Trump’s economic plans are being set into motion, according to one of the newest top White House officials, who believes America will see the “biggest” fiscal reform on trade, energy, regulations and tax and spending cuts.

“When the people who are trying to cause panic over President Trump’s trade policy simulate what it’s going to do, they don’t account for all the other policies. So President Trump is drill, baby, drill and deregulate and tax cuts and reduce spending,” National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett said in an exclusive interview on “Kudlow,” Monday.

“And if you look at tariffs as part of an overall strategy, you’re going to see, as President Trump says, a golden age,” he added. “And it’s going to be the biggest supply side reform that America has ever seen.”

On the presidential campaign trail, Trump repeatedly proposed tariffs on trade countries like Mexico, Canada, China and others to be used more as a negotiation tactic. This proved to work earlier this week when Colombian President Gustavo Petro swiftly backtracked on his refusal to accept deportation flights from the United States after Trump threatened tariffs and other measures.

ODDS OF U.S. RECESSION DECLINING: N.A.B.E. ECONOMISTS

“I think that you saw from the Colombia negotiation that the president is going to use tariffs if he needs to, in order to get people to make policy concessions that are good for America, that put America first,” Hassett reacted.

“The bottom line is that a tariff isn’t necessarily just a weapon, but economically, if you do the math, a tariff can be part of a supply side strategy that includes a big tax bill as well,” the director continued, while confirming that a universal tariff is something that Trump and House lawmakers will “negotiate” in a reconciliation bill.

Also under reconciliation negotiations is the 15% corporate tax rate, which currently sits at 21%.

Hassett also emphasized the impact that domestic energy and gas production has on minimizing inflation, claiming Wall Street analysts had hypothesized wrongly about the extra costs of Trump’s economy.

“If you spend $1.5 trillion a year more on government spending, you’re going to get inflation. If you don’t let people drill, baby, drill, energy prices are going to go up… If you do, as Biden did over the last couple of years, kill 130 million chickens, then egg prices are going to go up. So the fact is that we’re doing micro things correctly, deregulatory things correctly, and we’re going to get the macro stuff right, too,” he argued.

The newly appointed economic director also pointed out: “Inflation under Joe Biden was just under 5% for his whole term, about a little bit less than it was under Jimmy Carter and way more than double what it was under President Trump. And we’re 100% on the ball going after inflation, but it’s going to require an all-of-the-above approach. And right now, we’ve inherited really high inflation.”

Trump is also aware of the artificial intelligence (AI) race’s future impacts on the economy, according to Hassett, but remains immediately focused on reversing consequential effects from Biden’s “reckless spending.”

“One of the really fun things in the last week… is to walk around and to see the DOGE people, to see Elon Musk in the halls and to see all the great ideas that people have to make sure that Americans are not seeing their money wasted by a wasteful government,” he said. “There’s a heck of a lot for our team to fix, and I think we’re very optimistic about our ability to rein in spending.”
