76ers star shutdown: Joel Embiid sidelined for rest of NBA season

Joel Embiid’s stellar 2022-23 season, which culminated with the Philadelphia 76ers center receiving NBA MVP honors, seems like a distant memory. The 7-footer’s pro basketball career has been hampered by injuries, with knee issues contributing to his latest setback.

On Friday, the Sixers announced the seven-time NBA All-Star would be forced to watch games from the sideline for the rest of the season due to a left knee injury. He underwent a procedure to address the knee problems last February, but never seemed to return to form. Emiid and the Sixers tried to manage the pain and swelling in the knee this season prior to shutting him down.

The 76ers said the decision to shut down Embiid through the stretch of the 2024-25 campaign was made once it was determined he was “medically unable to play.”

“The Philadelphia 76ers and Joel Embiid have been consulting with top specialists regarding ongoing issues with his left knee. After further evaluation, it has been determined that he is medically unable to play and will miss the remainder of the season to focus on treatment and rehabilitation,” the team said in a statement.

“We are working with medical experts to determine the exact treatment plan and will update media when we have more information. The team and specialists will continue working with Joel to ensure the best path forward for his long-term health and performance.”

Counting the 164 games he missed his first two seasons after he was the third overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft and what’s left of this season, Embiid will have played in 452 of 883 76ers’ games by the end of this season — missing nearly 50% of the regular season.

The 76ers are 8-11 with Embiid this season, and 12-27 without him.

Embiid has been hobbled by injuries all season, and served a three-game suspension for shoving a member of the media. He’s averaged 23.8 points — he averaged at least 30 and won two scoring titles the last three seasons — and scored only 29 points combined in his last two games.

Embiid acknowledged earlier this month he may have to undergo another surgery on the left knee.

“I think the straightforward answer is that when you’ve got something that’s inconsistent, at some point, you’ve got to do something about it,” Embiid said. “We don’t know what it is. We’re looking into every option.”

He played just 39 games last season due to a torn meniscus in his left knee. Embiid did win a gold medal with the U.S. Olympic team last year at the Paris Games.

He has played only 58 regular-season games and seven play-in tournament and playoff games since he earned league MVP honors.

Embiid signed a $193 million contract extension ahead of the season and has banked nearly $266 million in career earnings.

Philadelphia entered this season as one of the favorites to contend for an NBA title, but the team is in the midst of a nine-game losing streak. The Sixers entered Friday in the 12th spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

Auburn baseball star Cade Belyeu crushes 1st homer of season hours after mother’s death

Auburn Tigers outfielder Cade Belyeu opened the 2025 season with a heavy heart and enormous emotional pressure on his shoulders as the team played the Holy Cross Crusaders.

Belyeu hit a solo home run in the sixth inning against Holy Cross. It was Belyeu and the Tigers’ first home run of the season. It turned out he played for more than just an early-season victory.

“He said Staci wanted him to play,” Thompson told the Montgomery Advertiser. “I think it was the most inspiring thing we’ve ever seen. Our crowd is just amazing. They absolutely sensed and knew what was going on with him. … An inspiration by Cade Belyeu.”

Mac McClung, who has played in 1 NBA game this season, wins 3rd straight dunk contest

Mac McClung forged his own personal dynasty during NBA All-Star Weekend.

The guard, who has only played in one game for the Orlando Magic during the regular season, took San Francisco by storm on Saturday and won his third consecutive NBA Slam Dunk Contest. It’s the first time any NBA player has won the event three times in a row.

The G League star had four perfect dunks, each scoring a 50. McClung dunked over a car and over 6-foot-11 Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star Evan Mobley. He defeated San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle to maintain his championship.

“It kind of feels like a blur,” he said. “It’s something I love doing. That’s where my creativity comes from. I genuinely love this contest and I love to dunk.”

McClung, who plays for the Osceola Magic in the G League, is the second dunker to win the contest three times. Nate Robinson won in 2006 and then again in 2009 and 2010.

McClung’s performance sparked reactions from Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant and Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

“mac might make me decide to dunk,” Morant wrote on X.

“If you do it. I’ll do it with you,” Antetokounmpo added.

McClung only has five NBA games under his belt. He’s played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers in addition to the Magic.

He said he prepared for the contest for nearly nine months and isn’t sure if he’ll go for a fourth title.

  • Saquon Barkley proclaims next goal after dream Eagles season: ‘Why not win another Super Bowl?’

Saquon Barkley proclaims next goal after dream Eagles season: ‘Why not win another Super Bowl?’

“It’s a great story, right?” said Philadelphia Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley when asked to sum up the last 10 months leading up to Super Bowl LIX, where he and his squad came out victorious.

Barkley sat inside a Raising Cane’s in Trevose, Pennsylvania, speaking to the media, reflecting on what just happened on Sunday: the Eagles beating the Kansas City Chiefs to stop NFL history and hoist the franchise’s second Lombardi Trophy as champions of the 2024 season.

Barkley was the AP Offensive Player of the Year, entering the 2,000-yard rushing club to lead the NFL in that category while being a catalyst for a stacked Eagles bunch that got redemption from their Super Bowl LVII loss.

If you asked Barkley if he was going to hoist the trophy in Philadelphia even just last year, he’d probably say no. But after the New York Giants allowed him to walk into free agency, the Eagles came calling and they struck a deal.

The rest is quite literally history.

“You kinda can’t make it up,” Barkley, who was joined by Raising Cane’s founder Todd Graves and hundreds of Eagles fans to celebrate the Super Bowl LIX win, told reporters. “But for me, I look at it more of the people that were with me during it. My family, my friends, the love and support they’ve had for me. Then, not losing faith.

JALEN HURTS DISPELS ‘TUSH PUSH’ TERM, SAQUON BARKLEY DISCUSSES ROLE IN EAGLES’ FAMED SHORT-YARDAGE PLAY

“If you would’ve told me when I was 19 or 20 years old that it would take me seven years to have the type of year I did and to win the Super Bowl, I probably wouldn’t have thought that was the case. But that’s life. There’s adversity, there’s ups and downs, and I think the fact I didn’t lose faith and I had the right mindset during those times, when my time was meant to come, I was ready for it. I think that definitely helps.”

At the height of the celebration, Barkley was asked in the Eagles’ locker room at Caesars Superdome what was next for the team he just joined and has two more seasons with (at least contractually).

“I said after the game, ‘Why can’t our dynasty start now?’” Barkley said. “Probably had a little bit of champagne and other stuff in my system at the time. But you really can’t focus on that. You got to enjoy the moment. It’s hard to win one, and you take it in, enjoy the moment and start all over. It kinda starts over after Friday.”

Now, that doesn’t mean Barkley’s words about a potential Philly dynasty were not true.

    Saquon Barkley smiles

He does believe this team has the makeup to do what the Chiefs attempted against them – win three straight Super Bowls for the first time in league history.

Eagles star receiver A.J. Brown expressed his feelings on social media that the “hunt” to take down teams and win is what drives him, and as a result, he still isn’t hung up on winning the “Big Game.” His counterpart DeVonta Smith said something to the same effect.

“That’s the beauty of the team that we have, a lot of guys have similar mindsets,” Barkley said. “I saw A.J. post something about it, I saw Smitty post something about it. I was with [quarterback] Jalen [Hurts] throughout the week and had conversations with him. It kinda sucks because when you’re a kid, you’re super excited to accomplish this thing. But when you accomplish it, you have fun in the moment, and then two nights ago I had a hard time sleeping because I’m thinking about how I’m going to attack the offseason.

“You kinda get – greedy is not the word – addicted to it. You want to find a way you can hold that Lombardi up again and do it all over again. You take it in, you cherish it, you appreciate the fans. But the dynasty thing, you can’t get caught up in that. The way you do that is by putting the work in, and there’s a reason why we won and had the success we did. Try to do it all over again next year.”

So, Barkley will enjoy Friday’s Super Bowl parade in Philadelphia, which kicks off at 11 a.m. at the team’s complex. Like he said, he’ll be cherishing the moment with his loved ones and teammates, soaking in the love from fans, which he felt a small taste of on Thursday.

But what’s next for him and this team? It’s simple: defend the title.

“That’s the dream. Why not have a better year than I had? Why not win another Super Bowl?” Barkley said.

Bengals’ Joe Burrow says he put up MVP-caliber season despite lingering wrist injury

Cincinnati Bengals star quarterback Joe Burrow is coming off a season in which he led the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns — and he wasn’t 100% healthy.

During a recent appearance on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take,” Burrow, 28, was asked how his wrist was during this past season after having surgery on it in November 2023 to repair a torn ligament.

“Whenever you have a ligament injury, your joint is going to take around two years to get all the mobility back and everything that you feel like you need,” he said.

Despite not being two years removed from the surgery and not having “all the mobility back,” Burrow was fantastic for the Bengals this season.

He finished fourth in the NFL MVP race, with the former LSU star completing over 70% of his passing attempts despite having the most pass attempts in the NFL.

The two-time Pro Bowler amassed 4,918 passing yards and 43 touchdowns while playing in all 17 games.

There were times during the season when Burrow’s surgically repaired wrist, which is on his throwing arm, didn’t feel so good.

“It feels good right now, there were a couple times I fell on it during the year it didn’t quite feel as good, I would say. Kind of just depending on the day, but we got into a good routine at the end of the year to feel as good as I could by Sunday,” he said.

The Bengals narrowly missed the playoffs at 9-8. They won their last five games of the season, but dug themselves too deep of a hole to climb out in time.

Burrow said having an offseason where he can train and not focus on rehab will be helpful.

“I think that’ll just help me level up even more because I’m not going to be focused on rehab and everything, I can just focus on quarterback-specific things, working out, getting my body the way that I want to for the year. So, I’m excited about that,” he said.

With Burrow having a full offseason to train, Bengals fans can only dream of what their franchise quarterback can do next season while being closer to fully healthy.

  • Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill doubles down on ‘love’ for Miami, despite ‘frustration’ with regular season results

Dolphins’ Tyreek Hill doubles down on ‘love’ for Miami, despite ‘frustration’ with regular season results

Tyreek Hill appears to be interested in sticking with the Miami Dolphins for the foreseeable future.

On Friday, the star wide receiver expressed his “love” for Miami. “I don’t want to go nowhere. I love [Miami], my family loves it,” Hill said during an appearance on “Up & Adams.”

Hill’s latest comments come just weeks after he said he was “out” of Miami following the Dolphins’ season-ending loss to the New York Jets.

“I’m out, bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I’ve got to do what’s best for my career. … I’m too much of a competitor to be just out there,” Hill said in January. Hill later admitted he made those remarks during a moment of irritation.

“What y’all had heard at the end of the season was frustration,” Hill told ESPN last month.

Hill cited the “special” nature of what the Dolphins were working to create as he further explained his hopes of remaining in Miami.

“It’s an amazing thing, man. We are really building something special in Miami. We made it to the playoffs the first two years. Obviously, this year was hard. If guys continue to buy in, to what coach is building and the culture that he’s trying to build, it’s going to be an amazing thing.”

Hill’s frustrations appeared to reach a tipping point when he pulled himself out of the second half of Miami’s aforementioned loss to the Jets on Jan. 5 when it became clear Miami would not clinch a playoff berth.

The five-time All-Pro selection expressed regret about his postgame comments.

“I could have handled the situation better,” Hill said. “Instead of saying I’m out, I could have obviously handled it better. And I wish I did. But in the heat of the moment, I just said whatever I had to say. And I’m taking full accountability of that.”

After leading the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards last season, Hill finished this season with just 959 on 81 catches. It was the first time he didn’t have 1,000 yards receiving since he had 860 with the Kansas City Chiefs in an injury-filled 2019 season. Injuries to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa contributed to Hill’s lack of production. Tagovailoa missed six games in 2024, including the Week 18 loss.

Hill said he has since spoken to Dolphins veterans such as left tackle Terron Armstead, cornerback Jalen Ramsey and running back Raheem Mostert, and offered a public apology Friday to his teammates and Tagovailoa.

“Tua, he’s my guy — always will be, no matter what,” Hill said. “I’m sure he understands my frustration, we all want to win … this is my public apology to you, Tua. I love you bro.”

He also spoke with McDaniel, who in his end-of-season press conference described the conversation as necessary to “clear the air in a rough and tumultuous situation.”

Colts’ Jonathan Taylor confident in Anthony Richardson after subpar 1st full season

Anthony Richardson’s rookie year was cut short after just four games due to an injury, so the 2024 campaign marked his first full season.

Safe to say, it didn’t go as many Indianapolis Colts fans had hoped.

Richardson suffered yet another injury in just the fourth game of the season, and early on, he struggled. In that span, he completed just over half of his passes, threw six interceptions, and fumbled the ball three times (thankfully, all were recovered).

He returned in Week 7, but it got even worse. In Weeks 7 and 8, he went 20-for-56 through the air and lost two fumbles. So, the Colts went with Joe Flacco for a brief period.

His final five games were much of the same – less than half his pass attempts were caught, and he couldn’t hold onto the ball. For one thing, he did rush for 358 yards in that span. But, he missed the final two games with yet another injury.

Add it all up, and Richardson’s first full season ended up with completing 47.7% of his passes while throwing just eight touchdowns against 12 turnovers in 11 games. He did run for 499 yards and six touchdowns, but he put the ball on the ground nine times.

However, his star running back in Jonathan Taylor is pleading for everyone to give him some time.

“People don’t realize quarterbacks coming out now are like 24 – he’s only 22. So, he hasn’t played like much ball yet, only 15 games in the NFL,” Taylor said to Fox News Digital in a recent interview (Richardson turns 23 in May).

Taylor is in New Orleans for Super Bowl week, perhaps a place he’d rather be to contend for the Lombardi Trophy. But during his trip, he’s getting out to Dairy Queen for his typical pregame meal.

“I’m going there right after this. I’m getting some of that sauced and tossed honey barbecue chicken strip basket,” Taylor said.

Oh, and he won’t forget about his “go-to” Oreo Blizzard either.

In speaking about his quarterback, though, Taylor also pointed to what people don’t see.

“He’s on the field getting extra reps. He’s really in the playbook all day, every day so he has that work ethic.”

NFL players uninterested in expanding regular season to 18 games, NFLPA exec says

While NFL leadership might be excited about the possibility of expanding the regular season, the players apparently don’t share that same enthusiasm.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has spoken openly about his interest in expanding the regular season to 18 games. Speaking at a pre-Super Bowl news conference on Monday, he noted that more work would need to be done before making the decision, but expressed the desire to give fans what they want.

“We know fans love football and they want more football. But we have to be incredibly sensitive and smart with the balance and how we deal with that,” said Goodell.

And while fans’ interests are among the top priorities, NFLPA Executive Director Lloyd Howell argued Tuesday that player interest is certainly the top — and players don’t seem to be interested.

“Their side hasn’t raised it, we certainly haven’t raised it. … Any commentary outside of a formal negotiation is just commentary,” Howell said.

“It’s a player’s decision as to what they will agree to do or not. Right now, when I have talked to players over the last two seasons, no one wants to play an 18th game. No one. Seventeen games is already, for many of the guys, too long.”

Howell continued to argue that health and safety concerns, as well as recovery time, represent the biggest hurdle in expanding the regular season more than it already has.

“No matter what Roger says, you open up that CBA (collective bargaining agreement) and we’re going to get into field surfaces, we’re going to get into safety, we’re going to get into a lot of things,” he said.

Revenue will also be another hot topic. Under the current CBA, the players’ share of league revenue increased from 47% to 48% starting in 2021. That was increased to 48.5% based on the league’s new television contracts after the 17-game schedule was implemented.

But that figure is expected to change if the regular season does expand, Howell said.

“If I’m asking my workforce to work more, it’s not as simple as I’m gonna fall back on the revenue split that already exists,” he said. “There are so many dimensions that hang off the length of the season.”
