Safer Internet Day 2025 Date, Theme, Activities, History & Significance: All You Need To Know About the Global Initiative To Promote Online Safety

Safer Internet Day 2025, celebrated in over 180 countries, aims to raise awareness about online safety and promote responsible use of the Internet. Established in 2004 by the European Commission, Safer Internet Day has grown into an important international initiative, uniting individuals, organisations, schools, and governments to create a safer, more inclusive online space for everyone, particularly children and young people. As technology continues to evolve, the need for responsible online behaviour becomes even more crucial, and this day serves as a reminder of the collective effort required to achieve a better, safer internet. Let us look at the Safer Internet Day 2025 theme, ways to celebrate the day, along with the history and significance of the observance. International Internet Day Date and Significance: Know About the Origin of the Day That Celebrates the Usage of the Internet for the First Time.

Safer Internet Day 2025 Date, History & Significance

Safer Internet Day 2025 will be celebrated on February 11, and it holds particular significance as it aims to address the rapidly evolving landscape of digital technologies and the potential risks they bring. In an era of widespread internet use, social media platforms, online gaming, and digital communications, both the opportunities and dangers of the internet are ever-present. The observance encourages individuals to reflect on how their online actions impact themselves and others while also reinforcing the importance of using the internet to connect, learn, and share safely.

    Safer Internet Day 2025 Theme

The “Together for a Better Internet” theme emphasises collaboration across communities, governments, tech companies, educators, and users to create a more positive and secure digital environment. With an increasing number of children and young adults spending significant time online, Safer Internet Day 2025 underscores the importance of education, awareness, and shared responsibility in navigating the online world safely and respectfully.

Safer Internet Day- What is it?

The meaning of Safer Internet Day goes beyond simply teaching people to avoid online dangers; it’s about cultivating a culture of respect, inclusivity, and responsibility within the digital world. The day encourages:

One of the key goals of Safer Internet Day is to educate the public about the risks associated with online activities. These risks include cyberbullying, privacy issues, online scams, and exposure to inappropriate content. By raising awareness, the event seeks to empower internet users to recognise potential dangers and take steps to protect themselves and others online.

Safer Internet Day highlights the need for digital literacy—skills that help people understand how to use technology in a safe, responsible, and effective manner. This involves not only knowing how to protect personal data but also recognising the importance of responsible behaviour in online spaces, such as respecting others, avoiding harmful content, and engaging in constructive online communication.

How to Observe Safer Internet Day 2025

Safer Internet Day is an opportunity for individuals and organisations to engage in meaningful actions that contribute to online safety and awareness. Here are some ways to participate in Safer Internet Day 2025:

Educational Campaigns and Workshops: Schools, libraries, and organisations often host events such as workshops, discussions, or webinars that teach internet safety. These events focus on educating students, parents, and educators about how to navigate online spaces securely and responsibly.

Social Media Awareness: Many individuals and organisations take to social media to share resources, tips, and stories about online safety. Hashtags like #SaferInternetDay and #TogetherForABetterInternet help spread the message globally and create conversations around internet safety.

Community Engagement: Communities can come together to host local events that promote internet safety, such as youth discussions on responsible digital behaviour or seminars for parents on managing screen time and understanding social media platforms.

Supporting Digital Safety Initiatives: On this day, individuals and companies can support digital safety initiatives by volunteering, donating, or collaborating with non-profit organisations that work to prevent online harm and promote positive digital experiences.

Whether through education, community initiatives, or online awareness campaigns, Safer Internet Day is an opportunity to take meaningful steps toward a safer internet for all. Let’s come together to embrace the positive power of the internet while working towards reducing its risks and building a digital world where safety and kindness thrive.

Saints legend Drew Brees among many praising increased safety measures at Super Bowl LIX

The city of New Orleans started off 2025 in a tragic way, as a terror attack on its famous Bourbon Street killed 14 people and injured 57 others.

While the city, and the country for that matter, mourned together, it was only natural that many looked ahead to this week, Super Bowl LIX week, in the Big Easy.

How safe would the thousands be in this city just one month after the horrific attack?

Several former and current NFL stars spoke with Fox News Digital about how safe they feel being in New Orleans at the moment, and Drew Brees, the Super Bowl-winning quarterback of the Saints, explained what has been clear since this week began.

“You notice the law enforcement presence everywhere you go,” Brees said. “Every street that I’ve driven down, you feel the presence. I hope everybody feels safe. This is meant to be a celebration, it’s meant to be everybody coming together having a good time. Looking out for one another, but having a great time.

“I think that New Orleans, the NFL and everyone involved has done a phenomenal job. The state of Louisiana, Governor [Jeff] Landry, everyone’s done a phenomenal job to make sure everyone feels safe, relaxed and having a good time.”

Brees’ Saints teammate Mark Ingram II reiterated his feeling of safety in the city he always loves coming back to, especially when football is involved.

Ingram spoke to the resilience of the people within this great city, and he firmly believes that no other place in the country could be safer right now.

“There’s no better place to be as far as safety right now than New Orleans,” he said. “There’s military out here with ARs like every block. Police, undercovers. I know what happened was tragic, and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by that. Everyone was affected by it. But right now, the city has responded, and the NFL has responded. Walking around the city, there’s no safer place to be right now in America than right here in New Orleans.

“New Orleans is a resilient city. The people are resilient and strong, so kind and it’s always a blessing to come back to New Orleans, to a city that’s so important to me. It’s been a huge part of my life.”

Green Bay Packers star Josh Jacobs added: “With everything that went on in this city, and in this world lately, I think that it’s an extreme importance to be able to feel safe and protected. The people out there on a day-by-day basis giving themselves and putting their bodies and lives on the line, they have the most gratitude and respect from me. I love what they’re doing.”

“When I got in last night, there’s a couple road blocks, the front of the hotel was blocked. It was like this was the most secure I’ve ever felt,” free agent receiver Braxton Berrios mentioned. “National Guard, military, police across all bases they have covered. Tremendous job by them, and we really appreciate it.”

Secretary Kristi Noem said Monday the Department of Homeland Security has “no credible threats” on Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.

New Orleans is expecting upwards of 125,000 visitors to converge on its city limits, where parties, concerts and other events will be happening throughout the week leading up to the game.

“We’re going above and beyond what we’ve seen in the past when we’ve hosted previously,” New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said during a news conference. “We know we’re safer than we’ve ever been before.”

Safety will be at the forefront, with state, federal and local law enforcement officers with boots on the ground during the Super Bowl, Lanier said, though details about protocol were not disclosed.

Agencies including the FBI and Secret Service will be around the stadium and downtown New Orleans, according to DeLaune. They will include rooftop snipers, BearCat armored SWAT vehicles and more.

There will also be federal air marshals, who are armed, stationed around the city’s public transportation hubs scanning for suspicious people and activity, while also guarding against drones. There is a ban on drones around the Superdome and downtown New Orleans throughout the week and flight restrictions up to 18,000 feet, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Ayesha Curry started the Sweet July brand in April 2020, starting with a magazine, product line and a store. The brick-and-mortar shop consisted of coffee, baked goods and other items. The Oakland store opened in 2021.

Crime in Oakland appeared to be a thorn in the side of the business. The shop suffered a break-in in 2022, which led to the business temporarily closing. SF Gate reported at the time that glass at the front of the store was shattered, and some items were stolen.

  • Omnilert CEO talks AI and school safety in wake of Antioch High School shooting

Omnilert CEO talks AI and school safety in wake of Antioch High School shooting

Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee, was the latest to experience a deadly shooting. In the wake of the tragedy, many have questioned the efficacy of Omnilert, the artificial intelligence-powered weapons detection system that was used in the school. Now the company’s CEO, Dave Fraser, is speaking out about the advantages – and limitations – of AI security systems.

“The way our system works is it’s monitoring video cameras, and if you think about it, it’s essentially playing the role of a human being,” Fraser told Fox Business. “But for it to work, it has to be able to actually see a weapon in the same way that a human would need to see the weapon.”

Fraser explained that unlike traditional surveillance systems, which are often used after an incident, the Omnilert system is meant to be used as a preventative tool, along with other mechanisms.

OPENAI ANNOUNCES US NATIONAL LABORATORIES PARTNERSHIP, PLANS TO SUPPORT WORK ON NUCLEAR SECURITY AND MORE

Image depicts the Omnilert system detecting a weapon. (Courtesy: Omnilert)

“The visual approach, which is quite new, offers some pretty interesting advantages when layered with other technologies,” Fraser said.

When speaking specifically about the tragedy in Nashville, Fraser said that the shooting took place “out of the field of view,” making it “impossible” for Omnilert to see the weapon and detect the threat.

In February 2023, the Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) board greenlit a $1 million contract with AI gun detection system, Omnilert, which is set to end on Nov. 30, 2025, according to local outlet WKRN.

Fraser told Fox Business that Omnilert’s systems are designed to work quickly, as with emergency situations “time is of the essence.”

“If it can see a weapon, it will typically detect it within less than a second and at that point the data regarding that potential detection is actually sent to human beings for verification.”

US REPORTEDLY INVESTIGATING WHETHER CHINA’S DEEPSEEK USED RESTRICTED AI CHIPS

Once a threat is verified, Omnilert’s system can automatically activate other security tools, such as sounding alarms or locking doors. However, Fraser admits that no one system is perfect and that, in an ideal world, Omnilert would be combined with other safety measures.

The “bottom line,” Fraser says, is to use “multiple layers of defense.”

On its website, Omnilert spells out a possible layered approach to school safety. The list includes training for staff, onsite security, surveillance cameras, metal detectors and more, in addition to an AI-powered system.

According to Omnilert’s annual gun violence report, which was released earlier this month prior to the Antioch High School shooting, 2024 saw the second-highest number of K-12 school shooting incidents since 1966.

Following the shooting, Fran Bush, a former Metro Nashville Public Schools board member, told the New York Post that she “knew this day was gonna happen.”

“I knew it was gonna happen just because it’s like a free open door, everybody coming in,” Bush added. She also said that she unsuccessfully pushed for the school district to bring in metal detectors.

In response to a Fox Business request for comment on the lack of metal detectors, MNPS Chief of Communications and Technology Sean Braisted said the school is working with Evolv to pilot a concealed weapon detection system.

Trump orders assessment of aviation safety, names acting FAA administrator

President Donald Trump on Thursday signed two executive orders appointing a new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) deputy administrator and ordering an immediate assessment of aviation safety.

The orders came after an American Airlines plane carrying 64 people and an Army Black Hawk helicopter carrying three soldiers crashed in midair at about 9 p.m. Wednesday.

The aircraft plummeted into the frigid Potomac River near Reagan National Airport, leaving 67 people presumed dead.

In the Oval Office Thursday, Trump signed an order appointing Chris Rocheleau acting administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The NBAA wrote in a statement it “welcomed” the announcement.

While signing the order, he said former presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama’s DEI policies were “just crazy.”

The memorandum says the Obama administration introduced a biographical questionnaire at the FAA to shift the hiring focus away from objective aptitude, and the Biden administration later encouraged the recruitment of people with “severe intellectual disabilities.”

“During my first term, my Administration raised standards to achieve the highest standards of safety and excellence,” Trump wrote in the memo. “The Biden Administration egregiously rejected merit-based hiring, requiring all executive departments and agencies to implement dangerous ‘diversity equity and inclusion’ tactics, and specifically recruiting individuals with ‘severe intellectual’ disabilities in the FAA.”

Republican state AGs await Trump-brokered TikTok deal, remain skeptical on app safety

President Donald Trump signaled Saturday a deal could be underway soon to “save” TikTok from a looming ban, and Republican state attorneys general – many skeptical of the app’s security – are waiting to see if it comes to fruition.

“I have spoken to many people about TikTok and there is great interest in TikTok,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on a flight to Florida, Reuters reported.

The reported deal Trump is working on involves partnering with software company Oracle and a group of outside investors to take control of the app’s operations. According to sources familiar with the matter, ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, would maintain a stake in the platform under the proposed deal. However, Oracle would take control of data management and software updates, leveraging its existing role in supporting TikTok’s web infrastructure, two sources told Reuters.

“President Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to save TikTok, and there’s no better dealmaker than Donald Trump,” Trump’s national press secretary Karoline Leavitt previously told Fox News Digital.

Several Republican state attorneys general have actively pursued actions to ban TikTok, citing national security concerns and potential data privacy issues. In December 2024, 22 attorneys general, including those from Virginia and Montana, filed an amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the “divest-or-ban” law against TikTok. The law mandates that TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, divest its U.S. operations or face a potential ban due to national security concerns.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also initiated legal action against TikTok earlier this month, alleging “TikTok lied about its safety standards and concealed the truth about the prevalence of inappropriate and explicit material,” according to his office’s news release. Paxton’s lawsuit doesn’t mention the app’s ban.

A source close to several Republican state attorneys general told Fox News Digital on Monday that they’re confident if anyone can make a deal to protect the U.S. from the Chinese Communist Party, it’s Trump, but if it poses a threat to national security, then it should be banned.

Republicans aren’t the only ones concerned about TikTok. Several Democratic state attorneys general have actively pursued legal actions against the social media app, too. In October 2024, California Attorney General Rob Bonta and New York Attorney General Letitia James, along with 12 other states and the District of Columbia, filed a lawsuit alleging that TikTok exploits and harms young users and deceives the public about the social media platform’s dangers.

While Trump tried to ban the app from U.S. access during his first administration, he credited TikTok for reaching young voters during the 2024 presidential campaign.

TikTok went dark earlier this month after ByteDance had nine months to sell TikTok to an approved buyer but opted, along with TikTok, to take legal action against the law. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the law, citing national security risks because of its ties to China.

The app was reinstated for U.S. users the following day, with Trump promising an executive order to extend TikTok’s sale.

Scammers find sneaky way to bypass your iPhone’s safety features

In an alarming development, cybercriminals have devised a new method to circumvent Apple’s built-in phishing protection for iMessage, potentially exposing you to malicious links and scams. This sophisticated tactic exploits a security feature designed to protect you, turning it into a vulnerability that could lead to significant personal and financial risks.

Scammer’s phishing text message sent to iPhone (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

    The trick unveiled

Apple’s iMessage automatically disables links in messages from unknown senders as a security measure. However, cybercriminals have found a way to exploit this protection. By instructing you to reply to the message, often with a simple “Y,” the attackers can re-enable previously disabled links. This seemingly innocuous action not only activates the links but also signals to the scammers that they’ve found an engaged target for future attacks.

We reached out to Apple for a comment but did not hear back before our deadline.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR IPHONE & IPAD FROM MALWARE

    Common phishing lures

These deceptive messages often masquerade as notifications from trusted organizations, such as:

    • Undeliverable packages from courier services (USPS, DHL, FedEx)
    • Unpaid road tolls
    • Outstanding payments or fees

The messages typically end with instructions like: “(Please reply Y, then exit the SMS, re-open the SMS activation link, or copy the link to open in Safari).”

THE ONE SIMPLE TRICK TO HELP KEEP OUT CYBER CREEPS ON IPHONE

    The rising threat of smishing

This new tactic is part of a broader trend of smishing (SMS phishing) attacks targeting mobile users. With the increasing reliance on smartphones for various activities, including financial transactions and personal communications, these attacks pose a significant threat to users’ security and privacy.

DOES MY IPHONE NEED ANTIVIRUS PROTECTION?

    How to protect yourself

To safeguard against these sophisticated phishing attempts, consider the following steps.

    1) Never reply to suspicious messages: Avoid responding to texts from unknown senders, especially those asking you to reply to activate links. Additionally, make sure to delete suspicious text messages and block the sender to prevent further attempts. Since the sender is not in your contact list, you can click Report Junk at the bottom of the text. Then click Delete and Report Junk. This will report the conversation as junk by sending it to your wireless carrier and Apple using your phone number.

    2) Verify sender identity: Contact organizations directly through official channels if you’re unsure about a message’s legitimacy.

    3) Be skeptical of urgency: Scammers often use urgent language to prompt quick, thoughtless actions.

    4) Enable message filtering: Use your device’s built-in filtering options to sort messages from unknown senders. Here are the steps:

    • Open Settings
    • Scroll down and click Apps
    • Tap Messages
    • Turn on Filter Unknown Senders

This feature allows you to automatically sort messages from unknown senders, easily filter unread messages and manage your message inbox more efficiently.

    5) Use two-factor authentication (2FA): 2FA adds an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring a second form of verification, such as a text message or authentication app, in addition to your password. This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access, even if your password is compromised.

    6) Have strong antivirus software: The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

    7) Invest in personal data removal services: By reducing your online footprint, you make it harder for cybercriminals to obtain your contact information, potentially preventing them from sending you these deceptive iMessage phishing texts in the first place. While no service promises to remove all your data from the internet, having a removal service is great if you want to constantly monitor and automate the process of removing your information from hundreds of sites continuously over a longer period of time. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

What to do if you’ve been targeted

If you suspect you’ve fallen victim to a smishing attack:

    • Report the incident to relevant authorities and institutions
    • Freeze your credit to prevent potential identity fraud
    • Change passwords and PINs for all your accounts; consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords
    • Monitor your finances and online accounts for suspicious activity
    • Use an identity theft protection service: Identity theft companies can monitor personal information like your Social Security number, phone number and email address and alert you if it is being sold on the dark web or being used to open an account. They can also assist you in freezing your bank and credit card accounts to prevent further unauthorized use by criminals.

One of the best parts of some identity theft protection services is that they have identity theft insurance of up to $1 million to cover losses and legal fees and a white-glove fraud resolution team where a U.S.-based case manager helps you recover any losses. See my tips and best picks on how to protect yourself from identity theft.
