Jets to move on from Aaron Rodgers after 2 seasons

The New York Jets have made it official: They intend to move on from Aaron Rodgers.

The team released a statement on Thursday that they are moving forward without the four-time MVP.

“Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback,” head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey said in a statement released by the team.

“It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures. We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.”

Rodgers spent two seasons with the team, but suffered a torn Achilles just four snaps into his first game into his Jets tenure.

Returning from the season-ending injury in 2024, Rodgers’ Jets went 5-12 and fired both head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas during the season.

Rodgers threw for 3,987 yards and 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 17 games for the Jets last season.

“I personally want to thank Aaron for his time at the New York Jets,” said owner Woody Johnson in the statement.

“His arrival in 2023 was met with unbridled excitement and I will forever be grateful that he chose to join us to continue his Hall of Fame career. From day one, he embodied all that it meant to be a New York Jet, embraced our fans, and immersed himself in our city. That is what I will remember most when I look back at his time here. He will always be welcome, and I wish him only the best in whatever he chooses to do next.”

Steelers player makes it clear he wants Aaron Rodgers to stay away from Pittsburgh

Aaron Rodgers’ impending departure from the New York Jets has his future in the NFL up in the air.

Rodgers played his best football down the stretch of the 2024 season, but New York only won five games as he returned from a torn Achilles injury. FOX Sports reported on Sunday the Jets told Rodgers they would move on from him – whether it is a trade or an outright cut.

There would only be a few teams where Rodgers could realistically go and start. The Pittsburgh Steelers are among the handful of teams that will have a decision to make with their quarterback situation – do they bring back Russell Wilson or Justin Fields or do they turn their attention to the free-agent market and go after someone like Rodgers?

Steelers safety DeShon Elliott made clear he does not want Rodgers in black and gold.

Elliott responded to an Instagram post that said Rodgers was a betting favorite to land in Pittsburgh.

“Leave his a– at the retirement home,” he wrote before apparently deleting it.

The NFL world made sure to screenshot the remark before it went away.

Rodgers has yet to say one way or the other that he will play one more season. He will turn 42 next December.

The 10-time Pro Bowler had 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in his lone full season with the Jets.

Hall of Famer Steve Young weighs in on Aaron Rodgers’ NFL future as possible divorce with Jets looms

Aaron Rodgers’ time in a New York Jets uniform could soon come to an end. It is “unlikely” the Jets will “move forward” with the four-time NFL MVP quarterback, FOX Sports reported earlier this week.

The report on Rodgers’ future surfaced shortly after the Jets brought in Aaron Glenn as the team’s next head coach and named Darren Mougey the general manager. Rodgers and the Jets divorcing could be a sign that Gang Green wants to go into the offseason with a clean slate.

If Rodgers’ stint in New York does officially reach an endpoint around the start of the NFL’s new league year in March, he will leave the Jets with 18 starts over two seasons. Rodgers suffered a season-ending injury in the first week of the 2023 campaign.

While an unceremonious exit from the Jets could spark questions about whether the 41-year-old Rodgers will decide to step away from the NFL, Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Young believes the quarterback still has the tools to be an effective player.

“In today’s game, Tom Brady said it best. The flats are always open, the middle of the field is unpatrolled, and no one can hit me,” said Young during a recent appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show.”

“And by the way I make $50 million dollars. So I think that Aaron because he’s healthy a full year, look the mobility is down and everything else, but if he can get to a place that understands the position, has innovative mindsets of more and more places like that, that you can get to where you can take advantage of the new football that’s being played. If he can get to one of those spots I’m sure he’d still love to go play some great football, especially with a more innovative mind.”

Rodgers threw 28 touchdowns against 11 interceptions over 17 games in 2024. While Rodgers is much closer to the end of his career than he is to the beginning, he did have moments this past season where he played well.

However, it remains unlikely that Rodgers will regain his MVP-caliber form. But with several NFL teams being in desperate need of competent quarterback play next season, Rodgers could draw interest if he does end up on the free agent market.

The Jets parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh in October and went on to finish with a 5-12 record.

Jets gave Aaron Rodgers ultimatum on ‘Pat McAfee Show’ appearances: report

As reports swirl that the New York Jets will move on from Aaron Rodgers this offseason, his media appearances may factor into the decision.

Rodgers joined the Jets in the offseason ahead of the 2023 season after spending 18 years with the Green Bay Packers.

Before his departure, Rodgers found himself in some controversies, most notably when he said he was “immunized” against the COVID-19 virus. He also spoke fondly of the hallucinogen ayahuasca.

Then, shortly after what became his final game with the Packers, he went on a “darkness retreat.”

Throughout this time, Rodgers had become a mainstay on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” on which he had been known to push the envelope.

Rodgers has continued to make controversial headlines during his appearances on the show, including calling out Dr. Anthony Fauci for his vaccine measures, linking Jimmy Kimmel to Jeffrey Epstein and mocking “celebrities bought by China” ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

A new report from The Athletic claims new Jets brass told Rodgers he would not be allowed to appear on the show if he plays for the Jets in 2025.

“I was told that when they had conversations with Aaron Rodgers about what the future would look like, ‘If you’re going to be part of this team, you’re going to attend all of training camp, you’re not going to do Pat McAfee interviews anymore,’” Dianna Russini said on her “Scoop City” podcast. “They had a conversation with him of, ‘If you were to stay here, here is how we would want it to be.’”

Fox News Digital reached out to Rodgers’ representative, the Jets and ESPN.

The Jets hired Aaron Glenn as their head coach last month and brought in Darren Mougey as their general manager. Apparently, Glenn told Rodgers the quarterback would have to abide by Glenn’s terms, which included full offseason involvement.

Rodgers had an unexcused absence from mandatory minicamp, which turned out to be a scheduled trip in Egypt. Robert Saleh, the head coach at the time, said, “If it’s important to Aaron, it’s important to us.”

Perhaps Rodgers’ time with the Jets was done anyway. In a season where they had, at minimum, playoff expectations, they went 5-12 with Rodgers under center. And although there were times he looked like he turned back the clock, for the most part he did look like a quarterback on the wrong side of 40 coming off a serious Achilles injury.

Perhaps that injury robbed Rodgers and the Jets of a run, but with the team losing two more games in 2024 than it had in 2023 when Zach Wilson took over for Rodgers — even after they added Davante Adams — it may be time to close the door.

The New York Jets and Aaron Rodgers appear to be on course for a split.

FOX Sports reported hours before Super Bowl LIX on Sunday that the Jets told the four-time MVP they want to move on from the star quarterback. It’s unclear how that will happen – whether it’s an outright cut or they trade him.

FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer suggested that because Rodgers flew to New Jersey to meet with Jets brass, it may mean that Rodgers will seek to play at least one more season elsewhere.

Rodgers spent two seasons with New York. The first season ended almost as soon as it began as he tore his Achilles in Week 1 in 2023. He played the full 2024 season, bouncing back from the devastating injury. But the team missed the playoffs.

He talked about his future after their Week 18 win over the Miami Dolphins.

“We’ll have the conversations in the next few days,” he said, via SNY. “Whatever happens out of there, I don’t know if anything will be definitive coming out of those. But I just need some time away to think about my future in the game, and my future here if they want me to be a part of the next phase or if they’re ready to move on. Either way, I’m thankful for my two years here.”

New Jets head coach Aaron Glenn didn’t exactly give an idea one way or the other about Rodgers when he was introduced last month.

“If you are going to continue to ask me the same question, I’m gonna give you the same answer,” Glenn said. “We’re still in evaluation mode. So if anybody else is going to ask that, I’m going to give you the same answer. So don’t waste your time. We clear?”

He was then asked what he looks for in a quarterback and responded, “A winner.”

Aaron Rodgers’ future is in limbo, but the second half of his 2024 campaign may just keep him around.

The New York Jets arguably had their most disappointing season in franchise history, as they were just 5-12 despite playoff expectations and Super Bowl hopes.

Rodgers missed just about the entire 2023 season after rupturing his Achilles on just his fourth snap as a Jet. This season, he sure looked like a 40-year-old quarterback coming off a major injury.

At times, however, mostly in the second half, he turned back the clock, and Clay Matthews, who won Super Bowl XLV with Rodgers, thinks Rodgers can create some magic with new guys in charge.

“I’d love to see him come back. I tuned into the Jets more than ever this year to see what he was able to do,” Matthews told Fox News Digital in a recent interview. “Obviously, there was a lot of excitement, and with the playmakers they had, the trade for Davante Adams. Being an armchair quarterback, you look at ownership, GM is fired, head coach is fired, but you wonder if he’s a part of it. I’d love to see him play as a fan.

“He’s still got it. Father Time is catching up, but you give him some protection and some playcalling, playmakers around him, I think he can still get it done.”

Both Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas were fired midseason, but in Rodgers’ final 10 games, he threw for 2,234 yards, 18 touchdowns and four interceptions, and had six games with a passer rating over 100.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will face a Senate confirmation hearing on Wednesday on Capitol Hill as he looks to take over as President Donald Trump’s Health and Human Services secretary.

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been one of the loudest and proudest supporters of Kennedy, as he has been entangled in the political process, starting with the initial bid for president. Kennedy broached Rodgers to be his running mate during the 2024 presidential election – a moment that was captured on the Netflix docuseries “Enigma.”

“Retire and go into politics or play two or three more years,” he said. “I definitely envisioned a life without football, and it wasn’t scary. I felt comfort in being able to move on at some point. But I love football. I want to keep playing. And I hated the way last year went. There’s still some unfinished business in New Jersey.”

Still, Rodgers was strong in his support of Kennedy.

He said on “The Pat McAfee Show” earlier this month that senators who were going to question Kennedy had better be ready.

“Like, please, somebody try and get after him and just watch him absolutely mop the floor with any of these senators,” Rodgers said. “You better come ready senators, come ready and try and see if you can pull one over on my boy, Bobby, because Bobby’s f—— smart, dude. And no notes, off the cuff, can handle his own pretty well, so excited for him to – and honestly so should everybody.”

Rodgers touched on Kennedy’s initiative to “Make America Healthy Again.” The movement appeared to be kick-started this week when the Food and Drug Administration banned red food dye due to potential cancer risk.

“Like, if you spend a minute researching ingredients in products in the states compared to overseas, it’s disgusting,” the star quarterback said. “It’s disgusting what they allow here, the levels that they allow here, products that are terrible for you, products they know are carcinogenic. So it’s going to [be] as he’s doing a service to everybody if you just let him and get the hell out of the way and stop trying to label him as whatever the f— they want to label him these days.

“He just wants to make sure that everything that’s being given to our kids is safe, everything that we’re ingesting on a day-to-day basis is safe, and he’s going to ‘Make America Healthy Again’ or is going to freaking die trying.”

Aaron Glenn, the New York Jets’ newest head coach, made crystal clear to reporters on Monday where he was in the process of figuring out whether Aaron Rodgers will be back in 2025.

Glenn was introduced as the Jets’ head coach and in his first media scrum with reporters the obvious question about Rodgers came up.

If it’s as simple as that, Rodgers would be a shoo-in to be back under center for the Jets. The one-time Super Bowl champion has won 153 games during the regular season. He battled through a tumultuous 2024 season to still throw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns.

It’s obviously not going to be the only criteria that matters for the 41-year-old who will be 42 by next season’s end.

He talked about his NFL future following the team’s win over the Miami Dolphins.

Aaron Rodgers played one of the two seasons he was with the Jets. The first season ended just as quickly as it began for the quarterback as he tore his Achilles four plays into the year. The 2024 season didn’t go as well as the team had planned, with Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas both getting canned during the year. New York finished 5-12.

Whether Rodgers returns as the Jets’ quarterback is still in question.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said in a video on Sunday that Rodgers had been adamant that whether he comes back to the Jets depends on the new leadership.

“Aaron Rodgers has been very clear that the decision about whether he comes back will be up to the new head coach and the new general manager. Aaron Glenn, to my understanding, is open to it, Rodgers as well. Expect those conversations to ramp up in the coming week,” Rapoport said.

Davante Adams has teased about playing elsewhere in 2025 and Garrett Wilson suggested he wanted to be traded out of New York.
