Bronny James receives sarcastic ‘MVP’ chants in road blowout during garbage time

LeBron James is used to hearing MVP chants no matter where he plays, but most of the time, they’re for him.

However, on Thursday night, they were for a different James: his son Bronny.

The 20-year-old got some playing time late in Los Angeles’ 134-96 win over the Wizards in Washington. The game was practically over from the jump, as the Lakers led 78-45 at halftime.

This prompted Bronny, the 55th pick of last year’s NBA Draft, to get some minutes in garbage time. Perhaps it was better than the “tough spot” JJ Redick had put Bronny in the night before, when he went 0-for-5 from the floor while getting time at a crucial part of the game.

In his 12 minutes played, Bronny impressed with five points, including a tough and-one bucket that even got his father out of his seat.

But when James went to the line, some fans had some fun with the rookie by hitting him with “MVP” chants.

Of course, they were sarcastic, but they were loud, and it’s more MVP chants than most people out there have gotten.

Bronny had not seen the floor for more than six minutes entering Wednesday, but he’s now seen 27 minutes of time in the Lakers’ last two games.

It’s been a struggle for Bronny, who entered Thursday’s contest just 1-for-16 from the floor. He averaged fewer than five points per game during his lone season at USC.

James has spent a decent portion of the season developing in the G League, which has been much kinder to him. In those games, he’s putting up 16.3 points per game.

The tongue-in-cheeck chants came after ESPN mogul Stephen A. Smith ripped LeBron for stunting his son’s growth in the pros.

“I am pleading with LeBron James, as a father. Stop this. Stop this. We all know that Bronny James is in the NBA because of his dad,” Smith said on Wednesday’s edition of “First Take.”

The win improved the Lakers to 27-19 with the win, good for fifth in the Western Conference. They’ll face a tough test on Saturday night when they visit Madison Square Garden to face the third-place Knicks.

  • Fake toll road texts sweep America as Chinese scammers target US drivers

Fake toll road texts sweep America as Chinese scammers target US drivers

A new scam has come to light targeting residents across the United States with text messages that pretend to be from toll road operators. For many who receive these messages, it’s an easy and expensive trap to fall into.

The scam begins when people receive a message claiming they have unpaid tolls and may be charged fines. Scammers then ask for card details and a one-time password sent via SMS to steal their money. Security researchers believe that Chinese smishing groups are behind this scam, selling SMS-based phishing kits to thousands of scammers.

What you need to know about the fake toll scam

As reported by KrebsOnSecurity, the scam begins with a text message claiming to be from a toll road operator, such as E-ZPass or SunPass. The message warns about unpaid tolls and the possibility of fines, forcing recipients to act quickly. Victims are directed to a fake website mimicking the toll operator’s site, where they are asked to provide sensitive information, including payment card details and one-time passwords.

Security researchers have traced the scam to Chinese smishing groups known for creating and selling sophisticated SMS phishing kits. One such kit, “Lighthouse,” makes it easy for scammers to spoof toll road operators in multiple states. These kits are designed to trick users into sharing financial information, which is then used to commit fraud.

Reports of these phishing attacks have surfaced across the U.S., targeting users of toll systems like EZDriveMA in Massachusetts, SunPass in Florida and the North Texas Toll Authority in Texas. Similar scams have been reported in states including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Minnesota and Washington. The phishing pages are mobile-optimized and won’t load on non-mobile devices, making them even more deceptive.

    Phishing scams are evolving

Recent advancements in phishing kits include better deliverability through integration with Apple iMessage and Android’s RCS technology, bypassing traditional SMS spam filters. These methods increase the likelihood of victims receiving and engaging with fraudulent messages. The phishing sites are operated dynamically in real time by criminals, making them harder to detect and shut down. Even individuals who don’t own a vehicle have reported receiving these messages, indicating random targeting.

7 ways to stay safe from toll scam messages

By staying vigilant and following the steps below, you can protect yourself from falling victim to toll scams.

    1) Verify directly with toll operators: If you receive a message about unpaid tolls or fines, do not click on any links. Instead, visit the official website of your toll operator or contact their customer service directly to verify the claim.

    2) Install strong antivirus software: The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links is to have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

    3) Do not share personal information: Never provide sensitive details like payment card information, Social Security numbers or one-time passwords via text or unverified websites. Legitimate toll operators will not request such information through SMS.

    4) Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): Use 2FA for your accounts whenever possible. This adds an extra layer of protection by requiring two forms of verification, reducing the risk of unauthorized access even if some details are compromised.

    5) Be wary of urgency in messages: Scammers often create a sense of urgency, claiming immediate action is required to avoid penalties. Take a moment to assess the situation and verify the legitimacy of the message through official channels.

    6) Report suspicious messages: If you suspect a phishing attempt, report it to the Federal Trade Commission or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. Include details like the sender’s phone number and any links in the message. Additionally, inform your mobile carrier to help block similar scams.

    7) Use a personal data removal service: Employ a reputable data removal service to reduce your online footprint and minimize the risk of scammers obtaining your personal information. These services can help remove your data from various data broker sites, making it harder for scammers to target you with personalized scams. While no service promises to remove all your data from the internet, having a removal service is great if you want to constantly monitor and automate the process of removing your information from hundreds of sites continuously over a longer period of time. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

HOW TO REMOVE YOUR PRIVATE DATA FROM THE INTERNET

    Kurt’s key takeaway

It’s deeply concerning how these scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated and widespread. It’s no longer just about random phishing attempts. These are carefully crafted schemes designed to exploit our trust in systems we rely on daily. The fact that scammers can impersonate toll road operators so convincingly is alarming, and it shows how vulnerable we are to such attacks. It frustrates me to think of how many people may fall victim to these tactics, losing their hard-earned money.

Pardoned Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht thanks Trump, calls president ‘a man of his word’

Ross Ulbricht, founder of the anonymous online marketplace Silk Road, thanked President Donald Trump for giving him a full and unconditional pardon. In a video posted online, a visibly emotional Ulbricht praised Trump for being a “man of his word,” and thanked the president for giving him the “amazing blessing” of freedom.

“I am so, so grateful to have my life back, to have my future back, to have this second chance,” Ulbricht says in the video. He also said the pardon was an “an important moment for everybody, everywhere, who loves freedom and who cares about second chances.”

TRUMP CRYPTO CZAR HAILS EXECUTIVE ORDER, SLAMS BIDEN’S TREATMENT OF INDUSTRY

Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social that he called Ulbricht’s mother to inform her of her son’s pardon. The president said it was done “in honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which supported me so strongly.”

“The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponization of government against me,” Trump wrote.

In a recent appearance on “The Will Cain Show,” Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky, who was pushing for Ulbricht’s release, praised Trump for issuing the pardon. Paul pointed out that the people who used Silk Road to sell drugs got “minor sentences,” while Ulbricht was given two life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Ulbricht was convicted after his website Silk Road, which was founded in 2011, was used by those looking to make illegal drug transactions with cryptocurrency. He operated the website from 2011 until his arrest in 2013. In 2015, Ulbricht was sentenced.

In a 2015 press release, ICE called Silk Road “the most sophisticated and extensive criminal marketplace on the internet.

Last month, Ulbricht wrote, “For my last monthly resolution of 2024, I intend to study every day and to get up to speed as much as I can as I prepare for freedom.”

Trump vowed to pardon Ulbricht during his 2024 campaign, saying he would do it on “Day 1.” This move was seemingly part of Trump’s strategy to win over Libertarian voters.  Trump spoke about commuting Ulbricht’s sentence at both the Libertarian National Convention and the Bitcoin 2024 conference.

In addition to Ulbricht, Trump issued pardons for pro-life activists convicted under the FACE Act and many Jan. 6 defendants. The pardons for pro-life protesters were issued the day before the March for Life in Washington, D.C., where Vice President JD Vance is expected to speak.

Ross Ulbricht, founder of darknet drug market Silk Road, thanks Trump for pardon

Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the now-defunct darknet drug market previously known as Silk Road, thanked President Donald Trump for setting him free and hinted at what he has planned for his future in a video posted on social media.

Ulbricht, who was known online by his darknet moniker, “Dread Pirate Roberts,” was arrested in 2013 for his part in developing an online marketplace that connected people selling drugs and committing other illegal acts like money laundering.

It is considered the first modern version of darknet illegal marketplaces, which, over the years, have become more prevalent. Ulbricht was sentenced to life without parole.

Ulbricht’s laptop, from which he did much of the site’s maintenance and creation, is held as an artifact by the FBI alongside other items such as Ted Kaczynski’s cabin, D.B. Cooper’s plane ticket and pieces of the World Trade Center.

Ulbricht said in a video on X thanking Trump for his pardon that he was looking forward to “re-engaging with the free world” in the near future. Ulbricht added that the action was a “victory” for everyone “who loves freedom and who cares about second chances.”

“It feels amazing to be free, to say the least. It’s overwhelming,” Ulbricht posted on his X account, which he has regularly posted on from jail during the 11 years he was incarcerated. “For the next however long we need, I’m going to be with my family so that we can reunite, and be whole again, and heal. But there’s a lot to talk about, and I look forward to re-engaging the free world. So, once I’m feeling up to it, we’ll talk again.

Heat suspend Jimmy Butler again after missing flight for road trip: report

The Miami Heat’s rollercoaster saga with All-Star Jimmy Butler continues, as they are reportedly suspending him two games for missing a team flight for a road trip, per ESPN.

The Heat were heading to Milwaukee on Wednesday for their nationally televised game against the Bucks on Thursday night, but Butler was not on the flight.

ESPN adds that Butler intended on making his way to Milwaukee another way, but the Heat are expected to suspend him for the road trip, which includes a Saturday game against the Brooklyn Nets as well.

This is the second in-house suspension for Butler this season, which only adds to the turmoil that was highlighted by him requesting a trade a few weeks ago.

Butler also served a seven-game suspension for “multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team,” though he remains a member of the Heat.

JIMMY BUTLER PLAYS IN SUNS-THEMED SNEAKERS HOURS AFTER PHOENIX ACQUIRES TRADE ASSETS

Butler continues to play, but he noted over the weekend that the “whole truth will come out” after making his trade request.

“Sooner or later, the whole truth will come out, but until then, we’ll continue to let people talk. And if I’m here, I will get out there to play,” Butler told the media after playing in the team’s loss to the Denver Nuggets at home.

Bulter also seemed to be frustrated with the reports that said his relationship with Miami players and the front office were tense.

“I expect for people to talk,” Butler said. “Half the reason is because don’t nobody ever know what I’m really doing, so you just make up stuff, which is fine. And, honestly, I really don’t pay any attention to it. But I’ve got people telling me, ‘Oh they said this. They said that.’ So, I guess it’s really all good. I don’t have to clear anything up.

“So more power to you. Keep talking, and we’ll see where we end up.”

Meanwhile, the 35-year-old sparked some social media controversy as he was spotted wearing Phoenix Suns-themed sneakers on Tuesday night, with many believing it was done purposefully as his desired trade destination.

It also came just hours after the Suns acquired three future first-round picks from the Utah Jazz in exchange for another first-round pick.

Phoenix could use another star, as the Kevin Durant-Devin Booker-led roster is only 21-21 this season.

Heat president Pat Riley said back in December, “We are not trading Jimmy Butler.” However, the team’s stance changed after that seven-game suspension.
