DOGE team welcomed at the Pentagon but some remain skeptical

The Department of Defense has received a list of DOGE officials tasked with cutting 8% from next year’s budget. “We welcome DOGE to the Pentagon,” said Secretary Pete Hegseth. “And I hope to welcome Elon to the Pentagon very soon.”

The Pentagon employs 3.7 million personnel with a budget exceeding $850 billion, but it has never passed an audit.

Tara Dougherty, CEO of Govini a defense software company, worked for three former Defense secretaries going back to Robert Gates. She says the biggest savings will be found in overhauling the decades-old weapons acquisition process, which still uses manual spreadsheets and fax machines.

“I would put a big red bull’s eye on the process by which we manage weapons systems and military platforms,” Dougherty said in an interview with Fox News. “The defense acquisition process is massively broken….It’s too slow. I mean, the United States is issuing missile purchases through fax machines. It’s using spreadsheet sheets and data calls in order to get nuclear capable platforms off of production lines.”

As a result F-35 5th generation stealth fighter jets can’t get out of depot because they’re missing parts and the defense industrial base in the US doesn’t produce what they need. The next generation intercontinental ballistic missile, a key part of the  nuclear triad, is $35 billion over budget. And the cost of the B-21 nuclear bomber is rising and behind schedule.

“A lot of the weapons systems and the ships, jets, tanks and other capabilities that the department relies on for the military have such complex supply chains that the Department of Defense doesn’t actually know where all of those parts are coming from. And because they’re using spreadsheets to manage the programs overall means they have no ability to see if there are foreign suppliers or in some cases, Chinese suppliers of critical components like microelectronics in our military systems. This is the kind of thing that Elon Musk, DOGE, and the Trump administration are saying, this is no longer acceptable, and that’s what they’re going to root out,” Dougherty said.

To get ahead of the DOGE team the Navy is considering cutting its fleet of frigates, while the Army is looking for savings by eliminating outdated drones and surplus vehicles.

Republican Senator Roger Wicker says it is about time.

“I, for one, as Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, welcome, DOGE coming in to the Pentagon and helping us cut red tape, make the acquisition process more efficient and spend our dollars better,” Wicker said in an interview with Fox’s Maria Bartiromo.

But not everyone is happy that DOGE is coming to the Pentagon where there are many classified systems and a lot of secret information that US adversaries would like to gain access to.

“We’ve already seen that this DOGE, I call it the Department of Government inefficiencies, is causing a reign of terror chaos across the federal government,” Cong Eugene VIndman of Virginia told CNN. “Just this week, they released classified information about a US intelligence agency. They have access to the American people’s personal information, bank accounts and things like that that that they’re frankly not entitled to. And so I have a major, major concern about them going into the Department of Defense and sitting around with, you know, the internal systems there and US national security.”

Concern the DOGE team will move too fast at the expense of national security materialized after it purged 2000 federal workers from the Department of Energy, including 350, many of whom oversaw the nation’s nuclear arsenal. Many of these federal workers were working at the Pantex Plant near Amarillo, Texas, reassembling nuclear warheads, one of the most sensitive jobs that requires the highest level of security clearance.

The administration did an about-face last week and quickly tried to locate and rehire the Department of Energy employees overseeing the nukes.

At the Department of Veterans Affairs, the agency announced the dismissal of over 1000 employees, following DOGE guidance. Veterans Affairs employees joined Democratic lawmakers outside the D.C. headquarters to protest DOGE’s actions at the VA last week.

Pope Francis will remain in hospital, Vatican says

Pope Francis will remain hospitalized and will continue treatment for a respiratory infection, according to a Reuters report citing a Vatican spokesperson.

Diagnostic tests apparently indicated that Pope Francis had a respiratory tract infection, the outlet added.

Vatican News reported that the 88-year-old pontiff had a “restful night” at Rome’s Agostino Gemelli Hospital. While the pope was experiencing a “slight fever” on Friday, it had broken by Saturday, according to Vatican News.

Pope Francis has struggled with multiple health battles over the last few years, including surgeries in 2021 and 2023, as well as longstanding knee issues, which have resulted in his using a wheelchair.

  • Chocolate costs remain elevated as cocoa crops get hit by weather, disease

Chocolate costs remain elevated as cocoa crops get hit by weather, disease

Consumers with a sweet tooth will pay more for one of the most popular Valentine’s Day treats this year.

Cocoa prices skyrocketed, compared with a year ago, due to crop conditions coupled with rising manufacturing costs, leaving some businesses with no option but to increase prices for different chocolate products.

Ray Bitzel Jr., the owner of Bitzel’s Chocolate, an artisan chocolate factory in Suwanee, Georgia, has absorbed a hefty amount of the cost to keep customers. Still, the sweet treat shop had to raise prices to account for the increased costs.

“Chocolate prices from 18 months ago have basically nearly doubled,” Bitzel told FOX Business. “It’s that bad.”

COCOA PRICES CONTINUE TO SPIKE: WHAT’S DRIVING COSTS HIGHER?

Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute sector manager David Branch reported that the price of cocoa has more than doubled since the beginning of 2024, forcing industries that rely on the commodity to raise prices in order to remain profitable. Branch told FOX Business that “nearly all major candy manufacturers” indicated that they will have to raise their prices.

An assortment of chocolates from Bitzel’s Chocolate in Suwanee, Georgia. (Bitzel’s Chocolate)

The issue, according to Branch, is that the production of cocoa has been hammered for several years as key cocoa-producing regions in West Africa face higher-than-normal temperatures, which poses risks to crop development. The prevalence of cocoa swollen shoot virus disease (CSSVD), one of the most devastating diseases on cacao that causes significant losses, has also exacerbated production issues.

COCOA PRICES SURGE TO RECORD HIGHS DURING THE EASTER SHOPPING SEASON

Branch cited data from The International Cocoa Organization, which projected that global cocoa production in 2023-2024 will fall by 13.1% year over year, resulting in a projected production deficit for the third year in a row.

Since January 2023, the price of cocoa beans is up more than 355%. From January 2024 to December 2024, it surged over 143%, hitting an all-time high of $12,565 per metric ton.

Year to date, cocoa deliveries from the Ivory Coast, the world’s largest producer of the commodity, are up 76% on an annual basis. But nearby futures prices for the November 2024 contract increased 33% in London and 26% in New York. While the market has expectations of a better crop than in the previous season, it appears that supply risk and the current supply deficit are still big concerns, the Wells Fargo report said.

A chocolate made by Bitzel’s Chocolate in Suwanee, Georgia. (Bitzel’s Chocolate)

Bitzel’s biggest concern is making sure he doesn’t raise prices too much. As an artisanal chocolatier, Bitzel said he uses fine-grade cocoa, which hasn’t seen a reduction in prices.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

Right now, Bitzel estimates that raw commercial-grade chocolate is around $8 a pound and $12 a pound for white chocolate.

“Our job is just to figure out how to make a really good, quality product, and not have to charge an absolute fortune for it,” Bitzel said.

He said that there is a price point where people stop buying, and they seek alternatives to chocolate. This year, the business is seeing more customers, which Bitzel attributes in part to Valentine’s Day falling on a Friday. However, each customer is buying less than usual, he said.

  • Republican state AGs await Trump-brokered TikTok deal, remain skeptical on app safety

Republican state AGs await Trump-brokered TikTok deal, remain skeptical on app safety

President Donald Trump signaled Saturday a deal could be underway soon to “save” TikTok from a looming ban, and Republican state attorneys general – many skeptical of the app’s security – are waiting to see if it comes to fruition.

“I have spoken to many people about TikTok and there is great interest in TikTok,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on a flight to Florida, Reuters reported.

The reported deal Trump is working on involves partnering with software company Oracle and a group of outside investors to take control of the app’s operations. According to sources familiar with the matter, ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, would maintain a stake in the platform under the proposed deal. However, Oracle would take control of data management and software updates, leveraging its existing role in supporting TikTok’s web infrastructure, two sources told Reuters.

“President Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to save TikTok, and there’s no better dealmaker than Donald Trump,” Trump’s national press secretary Karoline Leavitt previously told Fox News Digital.

Several Republican state attorneys general have actively pursued actions to ban TikTok, citing national security concerns and potential data privacy issues. In December 2024, 22 attorneys general, including those from Virginia and Montana, filed an amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the “divest-or-ban” law against TikTok. The law mandates that TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, divest its U.S. operations or face a potential ban due to national security concerns.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also initiated legal action against TikTok earlier this month, alleging “TikTok lied about its safety standards and concealed the truth about the prevalence of inappropriate and explicit material,” according to his office’s news release. Paxton’s lawsuit doesn’t mention the app’s ban.

A source close to several Republican state attorneys general told Fox News Digital on Monday that they’re confident if anyone can make a deal to protect the U.S. from the Chinese Communist Party, it’s Trump, but if it poses a threat to national security, then it should be banned.

Republicans aren’t the only ones concerned about TikTok. Several Democratic state attorneys general have actively pursued legal actions against the social media app, too. In October 2024, California Attorney General Rob Bonta and New York Attorney General Letitia James, along with 12 other states and the District of Columbia, filed a lawsuit alleging that TikTok exploits and harms young users and deceives the public about the social media platform’s dangers.

While Trump tried to ban the app from U.S. access during his first administration, he credited TikTok for reaching young voters during the 2024 presidential campaign.

TikTok went dark earlier this month after ByteDance had nine months to sell TikTok to an approved buyer but opted, along with TikTok, to take legal action against the law. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the law, citing national security risks because of its ties to China.

The app was reinstated for U.S. users the following day, with Trump promising an executive order to extend TikTok’s sale.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Friday confirmed that it will keep its forces in southern Lebanon as the 60-day truce comes to an end on Sunday.

Under the ceasefire deal agreed to in November, Jerusalem was to begin withdrawing troops from its northern neighbor – where it launched operations last fall in an effort to dismantle Hezbollah – and have all troops removed within 60 days.

But Israeli officials have argued that the IDF will not withdraw its forces, because stipulations under the deal, including the removal of Hezbollah terrorists and weapons from the southern region of Lebanon, and the deployment of Lebanese and U.N. troops to the area, have not been adequately fulfilled.

LEBANON’S NEW PRESIDENT STRIKES A NATIONALISTIC TONE AMID REGIONAL SHIFTS, FURTHER WEAKENING OF HEZBOLLAH

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement Friday, “Since the ceasefire agreement has not yet been fully enforced by the Lebanese government, the gradual withdrawal process will continue, in full coordination with the United States.

“The State of Israel will not endanger its communities and citizens,” the statement added, noting that the withdrawal of Israeli forces was “conditional” on the security guarantees from Hezbollah and Beirut.

The U.S. backed Israel’s decision and in a statement first reported by The Times of Israel said, “President Trump is committed to ensuring Israeli citizens can safely return to their homes in northern Israel, while also supporting President Aoun and the new Lebanese government.

“All parties share the goal of ensuring Hezbollah does not have the ability to threaten the Lebanese people or their neighbors. To achieve these goals, a short, temporary ceasefire extension is urgently needed,” White House National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes told the outlet.

“We are pleased that the IDF has started the withdrawal from the central regions, and we continue to work closely with our regional partners to finalize the extension,” he added.

The news that Israel may not be pulling all troops from Lebanon by the intended Jan. 26, 2025 deadline first emerged on Thursday.

Hezbollah, in return, issued a statement and called on the Lebanese government and the nations that helped broker the truce, including the U.S. and France, “to move effectively” to “[ensure] the implementation of the full withdrawal and the deployment of the Lebanese army to the last inch of Lebanese territory and the return of the people to their villages quickly.”

The statement urged governments “not to give room to any pretexts or arguments to prolong the occupation.”

ISRAELI OFFICIAL REVEALS HOW ‘TO TRULY DEFEAT HEZBOLLAH’

More than 1.2 million people were reportedly displaced in Lebanon after fighting erupted amid Israel’s October incursion – a move prompted following months of missile exchanges with Hezbollah in the aftermath of the Hamas Oct. 7, 2023 attacks.

According to Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer, “There have been positive movements where the Lebanese army and UNIFIL [United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon] have taken the place of Hezbollah forces, as stipulated in the agreement.”

However, these movements in southern Lebanon “have not been fast enough, and there is much more work to do,” he told reporters on Thursday, according to Reuters.

AOC, Jeffries remain silent on Democrat backlash after saying anti-trans athlete bill empowers child predators

After alienating Democratic voters with unsubstantiated claims that the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act would empower child predators to give genital examinations to young girls, the two most prominent figures on the left in the House of Representatives are not addressing the issue.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. were among 206 Democrats who voted against a bill that would prevent transgender athletes from competing against girls and women last week.

Jeffries and Ocasio-Cortez pushed the unsubstantiated claims it would subject girls to genital examinations by child predators. No language exists in the bill suggesting genital examinations would occur, and Republicans argued proof of birth sex could be determined by a birth certificate.

Jeffries and Ocasio-Cortez have not responded to multiple requests for comment from Fox News Digital regarding their arguments, subsequent backlash from Democratic voters who have said they are leaving the party in response to the arguments and data that suggests that a majority of Democrats oppose transgender inclusion in women’s sports.

However, Ocasio-Cortez addressed the idea of culture wars about transgender people being a distraction during an interview on “The Daily Show” Thursday.

“When we allow ourselves to constantly be distracted by these culture wars around trans people, it’s a new thing every day, and the answer isn’t that we just let those people be attacked, it’s that we say, ‘What are you doing, man?’ I think we need to make standing up for those folks just such an afterthought that it’s not even a debate,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“Like, we need to understand and see the bait for what it is, but we don’t take the bait by letting those rights just erode and go by the wayside.”

HOW TRANSGENDERISM IN SPORTS SHIFTED THE 2024 ELECTION AND IGNITED A NATIONAL COUNTERCULTURE

Ocasio-Cortez’s suggestion that the party should make protecting transgender people an afterthought comes after she delivered a tirade in defense of transgender people and in opposition to the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act on the floor of the House of Representatives last week.

Her rant prompted widespread mockery, and Democrats have since spoken up about their distaste for her and the party’s handling of the issue.

Prominent Rutgers law professor Gary Francione, a lifelong Democrat and advocate for LGBTQ rights, told Fox News Digital he left the Democratic Party in response to its opposition to the bill.

“That just made me very upset because it screamed out lack of integrity, lack of honesty,” Francione told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview. “This is the way you fight battles? By trying to insult other people who oppose you and disagree with you and insinuate that they’re child molesters or pedophiles? It seems to me you’ve lost the game. … I don’t know how they’re ever going to come back from this.”

Francione said many of the other Democrats in his network of law and education share his disdain for the party’s response to the bill and will also be leaving the party.

“I can say confidently of the people I know who are Democrats who I’ve spoken to, the vast majority of them are very unhappy about all of this stuff and feel that the party has lost its way,” Francione said. “I know a couple who said they are going to [unregister].”

Voter registration data suggests the party is losing members in Francione’s home state of Pennsylvania. However, no specific information for why is available. Prominent political organizer Scott Pressler announced on X the voter registration data shows that the number of Democratic voters declined by 24,867 from Jan. 14 to Jan. 21, the week that followed the House of Representatives hearing.

Just two Democrats joined the Republican majority in voting in favor of the bill, representatives Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez, both of Texas. Their decision to defect from the rest of the party and vote for the protection of women and girls in sports reflects a growing position of many voters in their party and independents, according to recent data.

A recent New York Times/Ipsos survey found the vast majority of Americans, including a majority of Democrats, don’t think transgender athletes should be permitted to compete in women’s sports. Of the 2,128 people polled, 79% said biological males who identify as women should not be allowed to participate in women’s sports. Of the 1,025 people who identified as Democrats or leaning Democrat, 67% said transgender athletes should not be allowed to compete with women.

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act is headed to the Senate after passing in the House, and it will need more votes by Democrats to get past a filibuster and move to President Donald Trump’s desk.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn, told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview she expects and hopes the bill will get the Democratic votes it needs to pass the Senate.

“I would expect there would be. I would hope there would be,” she said.

“Many of my friends who are Democrats will tell you that they think Title IX is a thing, and to have biological males competing against women is inappropriate. And they want opportunities for their daughters or nieces or granddaughters. And it’s frustrating to them when they hear about or witness a transgender male playing in a women’s or girls league.”

Blackburn added she has “no idea” what the Democrats who suggested the law would subject girls to genital examinations were thinking when they made that argument.

“I find it very difficult to believe that protecting girls in sports would have such an adverse effect,” Blackburn said. “Looking at the content of the bill is the best way to argue against it and know that a vast majority of Americans support protecting girls in girls’ sports.”
