US hockey star Charlie McAvoy receives praise for big hit on Canada’s Connor McDavid in intense 4 Nations game

The 4 Nations Face-Off matchup between the U.S. and Canada had sports fans everywhere talking about the anthem booing and the three subsequent fights in the first 9 seconds of the game.

Lost in that is what the U.S. had to overcome to win the matchup and advance to the final.

Canada’s Connor McDavid opened the scoring soon after when the electricity was at its highest. Canada hoped to steal one and send their fans home happy, but the U.S. looked to reset the tone immediately after, and the Americans believed Charlie McAvoy did just that.

McAvoy put a big hit on McDavid in the first period, and 19 seconds later, Jake Guentzel got the equalizer past Jordan Binnington. Matthew Tkachuk said it was McAvoy’s hit that revitalized the team.

“That also is a message-sending moment — probably one of the plays of the game,” the Florida Panthers star said. “They just scored a goal, the building was rocking and Charlie comes there and pops McDavid, like one of the hardest hits I’ve seen.”

Tkachuk added that McAvoy’s teammates “followed” McAvoy’s aggressiveness afterward.

“That hit Charlie threw on (McDavid) was kind of a game-changer,” U.S. defenseman Zach Werenski said. “He’s been known to do that. He’s great with his size, he’s really good defensively and I thought that was a perfectly timed hit to get our team going in the right direction.”

Dylan Larkin put the U.S. up 2-1 in the second period, and Guentzel later put one in an empty net and the U.S. won the game.

McDavid still held out hope Canada can bounce back and get to the final for a rematch.

“It was fast, tight-checking, competitive, emotional,” he said, via The Athletic. “It had everything you would want in a hockey game. It sucks it didn’t go our way, but this thing’s far from over.”

Trump receives raucous reception as he salutes during Super Bowl LIX national anthem

President Donald Trump was spotted in a salute during the national anthem performance by Jon Batiste before Super Bowl LIX kicked off on Sunday at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

Trump was shown in the stadium, and a raucous cheer was heard during the FOX broadcast from the crowd who saw him.

Trump was standing in between New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson and Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, during the national, which also received a loud roar from the crowd before kickoff.

Trump confirmed on Sunday that he would be present during the Super Bowl in New Orleans, releasing a message to express his excitement at seeing the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles go against each other in the “Big Game” once again.

The Chiefs and Eagles faced each other for the Lombardi Trophy two seasons ago.

“I look forward to joining the fans in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX to cheer on two great teams – the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles – as they battle for the National Football League’s Vince Lombardi Trophy,” Trump said in a statement.

“The coaches, players, and team staff on the field tonight represent the best of the best in professional football, but they also embody the best of the American Dream. They also represent the hopes and dreams of our Nation’s young athletes as we restore safety and fairness in sports and equal opportunities among their teams.

Trump also mentioned the lives lost in the Jan. 1 terror attack that happened on New Orleans’ historic Bourbon Street.

“This year, the Super Bowl returns to the Caesars Superdome for a record setting 8th time. While thousands of fans from across our Nation gather in New Orleans to cheer on their favorite team, we remember that 14 families will be missing a loved one who was tragically murdered during a senseless terrorist attack while celebrating the New Year on Bourbon Street.

“Our thoughts are also with the 35 individuals injured during the attack whose lives were changed forever that fateful night, and our prayers will remain with them for continued strength, comfort, and healing.

“Tonight, we look forward to a terrific game and the crowning of the Super Bowl Champions. Melania joins me in sending our best wishes for a great Super Bowl Sunday. May the best team win, and may God bless you, your family, and the United States of America.”

Kamala Harris receives icy reaction at Lakers game while fans call out unimpressive seats

Former Vice President Kamala Harris was spotted at a Los Angeles Lakers game this week and appeared to receive a rather icy reaction from fans in attendance on Thursday night.

Videos shared on social media showed Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, walking to their seats at the Crypto.com Arena for Thursday’s game against the Golden State Warriors.

Social media users pointed out Harris’ seats, which appeared several rows up from the court, and the overall lack of reception as Harris and Emhoff made their way up.

Comedian Jeff Dye, who was in attendance, shared a video of Harris’ and Emhoff’s seats.

“Kamala Harris is at the Lakers Warriors game in like row 58. Should’ve saved some of that money. @KamalaHarris @DouglasEmhoff,” he said in a post shared on X. “lol. What a world.”

“Crowd is completely unfazed,” another commented.

“The crowd’s unenthusiastic response says it all,” one post read.

Following Harris’ failed campaign, speculation about the former vice president’s future in politics has linked her to a possible California gubernatorial bid in 2026.

Prior to Thursday’s NBA game, Harris visited areas damaged by the Palisades wildfires and spoke with displaced residents at a Red Cross shelter.

That same day, when speaking with reporters, Harris appeared to dodge the rumors about her future political endeavors.

“I have been home for two weeks and three days,” Harris said. “My plans are to be in touch with my community, to be in touch with the leaders and figure out what I can do to support them.”

When pressed further, Harris responded that she “would be here no matter what office I hold, because it is the right thing to do.”

Bronny James receives sarcastic ‘MVP’ chants in road blowout during garbage time

LeBron James is used to hearing MVP chants no matter where he plays, but most of the time, they’re for him.

However, on Thursday night, they were for a different James: his son Bronny.

The 20-year-old got some playing time late in Los Angeles’ 134-96 win over the Wizards in Washington. The game was practically over from the jump, as the Lakers led 78-45 at halftime.

This prompted Bronny, the 55th pick of last year’s NBA Draft, to get some minutes in garbage time. Perhaps it was better than the “tough spot” JJ Redick had put Bronny in the night before, when he went 0-for-5 from the floor while getting time at a crucial part of the game.

In his 12 minutes played, Bronny impressed with five points, including a tough and-one bucket that even got his father out of his seat.

But when James went to the line, some fans had some fun with the rookie by hitting him with “MVP” chants.

Of course, they were sarcastic, but they were loud, and it’s more MVP chants than most people out there have gotten.

Bronny had not seen the floor for more than six minutes entering Wednesday, but he’s now seen 27 minutes of time in the Lakers’ last two games.

It’s been a struggle for Bronny, who entered Thursday’s contest just 1-for-16 from the floor. He averaged fewer than five points per game during his lone season at USC.

James has spent a decent portion of the season developing in the G League, which has been much kinder to him. In those games, he’s putting up 16.3 points per game.

The tongue-in-cheeck chants came after ESPN mogul Stephen A. Smith ripped LeBron for stunting his son’s growth in the pros.

“I am pleading with LeBron James, as a father. Stop this. Stop this. We all know that Bronny James is in the NBA because of his dad,” Smith said on Wednesday’s edition of “First Take.”

The win improved the Lakers to 27-19 with the win, good for fifth in the Western Conference. They’ll face a tough test on Saturday night when they visit Madison Square Garden to face the third-place Knicks.
