World Pulses Day 2025: From Toor Dal (Pigeon Pea Dal) to Masoor Dal (Red Lentils), 5 Types of Dal Popular in Every Indian Household

World Pulses Day, celebrated on February 10, aims to raise awareness about the importance of pulses in global food systems and highlight their role in ensuring food security and nutrition. Pulses, which include beans, lentils, chickpeas, and peas, are rich in proteins, fibre, and essential nutrients. They are a crucial source of plant-based nutrition, especially in regions where animal-based proteins are scarce or less affordable. This day also emphasises the environmental benefits of pulses, as they require less water and land to grow compared to other crops, making them an eco-friendly and sustainable food choice. World Pulses Day 2025 Messages and Wishes: Netizens Share HD Images, Wallpapers, Informative Posts, Sayings and Quotes To Raise Awareness About Pulses.

The observance of World Pulses Day serves as a reminder of the need to promote sustainable agricultural practices and the consumption of nutrient-dense foods. Pulses are not only vital for human health but also for the health of the planet. By incorporating pulses into daily diets, individuals can improve their overall nutrition while supporting more sustainable food systems. The day encourages both individuals and governments to take action in supporting pulse production, research, and awareness, ensuring that these versatile crops continue to play an integral role in combating hunger, poverty, and malnutrition globally. As you observe World Pulses Day 2025, we at LatestLY have brought together a list of 5 different types of dal that are prepared in every Indian household.

    1. Toor Dal (Pigeon Pea): This is one of the most commonly used lentils in Indian cooking. It is often cooked with turmeric, tomatoes, and spices like cumin and mustard seeds and is typically paired with rice or roti. It has a slightly nutty flavour and is a great source of protein.

    2. Moong Dal (Yellow Lentil): Moong dal is light and easy to digest, making it a popular choice for everyday meals. It can be cooked in a simple form with minimal spices or prepared as a thicker, spiced dal with a tempering (tadka) of ghee, cumin, garlic, and hing (asafoetida). It is commonly enjoyed with rice or parathas.

    4. Chana Dal (Split Chickpeas): Chana dal is made from split chickpeas and is a heartier, denser dal. It is usually cooked with onions, tomatoes, and a variety of spices, creating a thicker consistency. It is often paired with rice or roti and is enjoyed in many regional variations.

    5. Urad Dal (Black Gram): This dal is made from black gram lentils and can be prepared in both whole or split forms. It is commonly used to make dishes like dal makhani (a rich, creamy dal cooked with butter and cream) or simply spiced up with cumin, garlic, and ginger. Urad dal is popular in North Indian cuisine and is often served with naan or rice.

Dal is an essential part of Indian cuisine, offering not only a rich source of protein but also a wide variety of flavours and textures that cater to different regional preferences. Whether it’s the light and easy-to-digest moong dal or the hearty, flavourful chana dal, each type holds a special place in Indian households. Dal preparations vary with spices and cooking methods, making each dish unique and versatile. It’s no wonder that dal is loved across the country, bringing comfort, nutrition, and tradition to daily meals.

Popular real estate entrepreneur insists US is still suffering through a ‘difficult’ market

Sunny skies aren’t shining across America’s real estate market just yet, according to one of the nation’s top experts and “Shark Tank” entrepreneurs.

“No one wants to move and [there are] fewer houses to choose from at higher rates. So it’s difficult for homebuyers,” Corcoran Group founder Barbara Corcoran said on “Mornings with Maria,” Thursday.

Mortgage rates are moving down “by a fraction of a point,” Corcoran pointed out while reacting to 30-year fixed rates falling to 6.96% – the lowest level in six weeks. As of Thursday, the 15-year fixed loan rate was at 6.21%.

However, in Corcoran’s view, rates aren’t low enough for sellers to list their homes. Redfin reported in December that more than half (54.5%) of homes on the market had been listed for more than 60 days, with many deemed too expensive by would-be buyers.

TRUMP WANTS TO FIX THE HOUSING AFFORDABILITY CRISIS: WHAT IT WILL TAKE

“Mentally, it affects the housing market because people are waiting for very good news and coming down a tenth of a point is not really good news. It went from 7 [percent] to 6.9,” she explained. “Psychologically, that makes a difference, but with interest rates remaining high, what it really causes is fewer houses on the market.”

What’s more, the real estate expert doesn’t believe home prices will come down anytime soon.

“I don’t think it’s in the nature of sellers to be realistic, honestly. Their house is always worth more,” Corcoran argued.

“I don’t think prices will shake out at all. I think they’ll hold out hoping interest rates will go down again. And what is it to them?” she continued. “It’s another six months. And a lot of the sellers have very low interest rates they don’t want to give up.”

This current stagnant market was preceded by a flurry of activity driven by high demand during the pandemic, but has significantly slowed as soaring home prices and mortgage rates have led to an ongoing affordability crisis that has pushed homeownership out of reach for many Americans.

Some pockets of optimism can be found in the luxury housing market, as Corcoran noted those deals are getting done at double the rate of the national average.

“I really like the luxury market. I hate to say, I’m very bullish on that, particularly in warm climates. All the rates… are going up almost double the national average. And that’s a pretty good report card.”

The recall comes months after Blue Ridge Beef recalled 9,600 pounds of its puppy food, citing a similar salmonella contamination. According to the statement, the risk of salmonella can pose a threat to both animals and humans.

“Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products,” the release explained.

“Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever,” the statement added. “Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.”

Venomous creatures wash up on popular North Carolina beaches

Venomous creatures were spotted washing up on the beaches of the Outer Banks in North Carolina, and the National Park Service sent out a warning about the punch these slugs pack.

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore posted on Facebook that Blue Sea Dragons (Glaucus atlanticus) have been spotted on the beaches.

“This venomous sea slug lives in the open ocean and occasionally gets stranded on land following strong winds,” officials from the National Seashore posted to Facebook. “They may only grow to about an inch long, but don’t let their size fool you. They pack a punch!”

According to Oceana.org, Blue Sea Dragons go by other names like sea swallow or blue angel and can grow to about 1.3 inches.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore officials say Blue Sea Dragons move through ocean currents feeding on their meal of choice: the Portuguese man o’ war.

“Because their meals consist of such a venomous creature, they are capable of storing that venom for their own defense,” the park service wrote. “They concentrate that ingested venom and deliver a sting that is even more powerful! Talk about a fiery bite for such a small dragon.”

Scores killed after flames engulf hotel at popular Turkish ski resort

A fire at a hotel at a popular ski resort in northwestern Turkey on Tuesday killed at least 66 people, Turkey’s Interior Minister said.

Ali Yerlikaya said at least 51 other people were injured in the disaster.

“We are in deep pain. We have unfortunately lost 66 lives in the fire that broke out at this hotel,” Yerlikaya told reporters after inspecting the site.

Health Minister Kemal Memisoglu said at least one of the injured was in serious condition.

The fire broke out at around 3:30 a.m. in the restaurant of the 12-story Grand Kartal hotel in the resort of Kartalkaya in Bolu province, officials and reports said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Two of the victims died after jumping from the building in a panic, Gov. Abdulaziz Aydin told the state-run Anadolu Agency. Private NTV television said some people tried to climb down from their rooms using sheets and blankets.

There were 234 guests staying at the hotel, Aydin said.

Necmi Kepcetutan, a ski instructor at the hotel, said he was asleep when the fire erupted and he rushed out of the building. He told NTV television that he then helped some 20 guests out of the hotel.

He said the hotel was engulfed in smoke, making it difficult for guests to locate the fire escape.

“I cannot reach some of my students. I hope they are OK,” the ski instructor told the station.

Television images showed the roof and top floors of the hotel on fire.

Witnesses and reports said the hotel’s fire detection system failed to operate.

“My wife smelled the burning. The alarm did not go off,” Atakan Yelkovan, a guest staying on the third floor of the hotel, told the IHA news agency.

“We tried to go upstairs but couldn’t, there were flames. We went downstairs and came here (outside),” he said.

Yelkovan said it took about an hour for the firefighting teams to arrive.

“People on the upper floors were screaming. They hung down sheets … some tried to jump,” he said.

The government appointed six prosecutors to lead an investigation into the fire. NTV television suggested that the wooden cladding on the exterior of the hotel, in a chalet-style design, may have accelerated the spread of the fire.

The 161-room hotel is on the side of a cliff, hampering efforts to combat the flames, the station also reported.

NTV showed a smoke-blackened lobby, its glass entrance and windows smashed, its wooden reception desk charred and a chandelier crashed to the ground.

Kartalkaya is a popular ski resort in the Koroglu mountains, some 300 kilometers (185 miles) east of Istanbul. The fire occurred during the school semester break when hotels in the region are packed.

Aydin’s office said 30 fire trucks and 28 ambulances were sent to the site.

Other hotels at the resort were evacuated as a precaution and guests were placed in hotels around Bolu.

Meanwhile, a gas explosion at a hotel at another ski resort in central Turkey injured four people.

Happy New Year 2025: Here are the top 10 most popular New Year resolutions

As 2024 comes to an end and the New Year approaches, signalling a fresh start, people enthusiastically embrace the opportunity for a ‘new me’ by setting resolutions. It’s a new chapter to bring about positive change. A resolution is a commitment to achieve a goal for personal growth and improvement. It also sets the tone and mood for the year as one commits to certain goals in hopes of seeing fulfilling improvements by the end of the year.

It’s a story for another time why the resolution lists start to collect dust and soon you realise you are just recycling the same resolution list for the last two to three years. But it’s time to be positive and turn over a new leaf and new you as you actually commit to your resolutions this year. Here are some of the popular resolutions:

    Fitness

Every year starts with registering for a new gym membership, hitting the gym, and burning calories every day (not missing even the leg day!). Losing weight and getting fitter is, no doubt, one of the top resolutions every New Year. It’s a dream goal to achieve the glow-up seen in before-and-after pictures. Fitness is holistic, so apart from exercise, it also involves eating right and healthier, and following a strict diet plan.

    Travel

    New hobby

So much of our leisure time has been dictated by smartphones and ‘doomscrolling’ that it’s no wonder finding a hobby has become the need of the hour. Channelling productivity into something creative is mentally stimulating, whether it’s learning a new language or musical instrument, or taking on sportier hobbies like outdoor sports.

    Spend carefully

Frivolously spending on food delivery and e-commerce stores needs to be curbed. Mindful spending requires an active intervention by monitoring your expenses and being conscious of your purchasing habits. No more Black Friday sales driving you to the madness of retail therapy!

    Quit smoking and drinking

It’s a known fact what unhealthy habits like smoking and drinking do to the body. It affects the entire physical and mental wellbeing. Quitting might seem challenging but by approaching it at one step at a time this New Year onwards, you can make a difference.

    Spend more time with family

Personal entertainment like watching movies and series in different rooms despite living under the same roof as a family is honestly dystopian. And all talks of work-life balance aside, in reality, work may even eat up a significant portion of your family time. But with enough distractions and excuses, it’s time to spend time together as a family. If you don’t have time, then make time.

    Sleep on time

Sleep needs to be prioritized. No longer should you be walking around in the middle of the night like a ghoul or binge-watching until dawn. Sleep is a fundamental pillar of overall health. It has a profound impact on mood and productivity as well.
