Kyrie Irving wants to play for Australia in 2028 LA Olympics

A former Team USA basketball guard is hoping to play for a different country in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Kyrie Irving, the Dallas Mavericks superstar who won a gold medal with Team USA in the 2016 Rio Olympics, as well as the 2014 World Cup, was asked if he would play for Australia in the next Summer Games.

Irving was born in Melbourne, Australia, while his father was playing professional ball down under.

“We’re in the process of that right now,” Irving, 32, told reporters during NBA All-Star weekend. “Just trying to figure out what’s going to be the best route for me to be eligible. There’s a lot of paperwork in between that.”

Irving isn’t trying to slight Team USA, especially considering he didn’t play with them in the 2021 Toyko Olympics or this past year’s Paris Olympics.

He will be 36 years old when the 2028 Games tip off, and it’s not a guarantee that he will make Team USA’s always-potent roster. Meanwhile, Team Australia wouldn’t likely have less competition, and having a nine-time All-Star on its roster would be a great addition.

COLLEGE STUDENT WINS $100K AFTER BEATING NBA ALL-STAR IN 3-POINT CONTEST

Irving will wait to hear from Team USA to see if he might have a spot, but will “do what’s best for me.”

“Obviously, Team USA still has a decision to make,” he explained. “… Honestly, if I can be an Aussie at one point in my career and play for the Australian team, that would be great.”

While that’s something to look forward to down the road, the topic shifted to what the NHL is doing for their own All-Star break, as the 4 Nations Face-Off has been wildly popular since it kicked off.

Instead of the usual All-Star festivities, players across the NHL are playing in a round-robin tournament with Team USA, Team Canada, Team Finland and Team Sweden going head-to-head to see who will earn bragging rights. It will be Team USA and Team Canada in the championship game on Thursday night before the second half of the NHL season begins.

If the NBA were to shift to that – talk about the United States against a world team created buzz over the weekend – Irving implied that, from a competition perspective,”I would pick the world right now.”

“I’m always going to be with my USA guys,” Irving said. “We have so much history together. I’m just grateful that I can be both. Raised in the U.S. but born in Australia.”

Irving, who helped the Cleveland Cavaliers win the 2016 NBA Finals, is a three-time All-NBA guard and the 2011-12 Rookie of the Year. He is in the middle of his 14th NBA season after being the first overall pick by the Cavs in 2011.

Irving, known for his stellar ball-handling skills and ability to score anywhere on the floor, has averaged 23.7 points, 5.6 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game over his career. Irving made the ninth All-Star team of his career this season as he averages 24.6 points and 4.8 assists per game.

Tiger Woods to play in TGL after backing out of Genesis Invitational over recent passing of his mother

Tiger Woods will return to golf on Tuesday, when he tees it up in the indoor TGL league.

The league confirmed that Woods will be playing with the Jupiter Links when they take on the New York Golf Club.

Woods, 49, initially planned to compete in the Genesis Invitational, but he withdrew after saying he was still “processing” the death of his mother.

Woods revealed last week that his mother, Kultida, had died at 78 years old.

“I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready,” Woods said in a statement. “I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss.

“Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my Mom’s passing.”

The Genesis Invitational organizers paid tribute to her, as the par-4 seventh hole features a white flag.

The white flag is free of wording in a nod to Tiger’s late mother and her faith.

Kultida practiced Buddhism, according to a social media post from the PGA Tour. Buddhists hold the color white and the No. 7 in high regard.

White is believed to represent enlightenment, knowledge and purity. Kultida was born in Thailand, and the country’s flag has a pair of white stripes, which are believed to symbolize Buddhism.

It would have been the first time Woods will be competing since he had a microdiscectomy in September to alleviate pain in his legs. It was the sixth surgery he has undergone on his lower back.

The last time Woods played four rounds was at last year’s Masters, when he broke the tournament record for most cuts made at the prestigious major with his 24th consecutive cut made.

Jalen Hurts dispels ‘tush push’ term, Saquon Barkley discusses role in Eagles’ famed short-yardage play

The Eagles are taking a victory lap. Philadelphia steamrolled the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX this past Sunday, winning the franchise’s second Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Two of the team’s stars, quarterback Jalen Hurts and running back Saquon Barkley, stopped by “The Tonight Show” on Tuesday to reflect on the big game. “I’ve just been telling people I was trying to process it, and I think when you go into that, you don’t know how you’re going to feel,” Hurts said.

“You watch, as a fan, sports and championship games and these iconic moments. And you see the greats and how they handle it, and their excitement and the rush of emotions,” the Super Bowl LIX MVP continued. “And all I could think about was all the hard work. All I could think about was all the effort.”

EAGLES’ SAQUON BARKLEY SAYS MANY GIANTS WERE ‘SUPER HAPPY’ HE WON SUPER BOWL

The Eagles opened the scoring in Super Bowl LIX when Hurts found the end zone via the infamous “tush push.” Over the past couple of seasons, the Eagles have mastered the rugby-style quarterback sneak that has become known as the “tush push” or the “brotherly shove.”

But Hurts suggested that neither name is actually accurate. “I’m not gonna say what I call it, but it’s not that. Everybody came up with their own name for it: the ‘Brotherly Shove,’ the ‘tush push,’ all these different things. It’s not that,” Hurts said.

On short-yardage plays, Hurts typically lines up under center with two or three players behind him. He takes the snap, the offensive line surges forward and Hurts gets a big push from behind. More often than not, the Eagles gain the yardage needed for a first down.

Barkley, who signed a three-year deal with the Eagles last March, admitted that he was surprised to learn the play was not referred to as the “tush push.”

“I didn’t know if that was what it would be called, but… it’s not called a ‘tush push,’ actually,” Barkley said. When it comes to his role in the “tush push,” Barkley said.

“I think I have the easiest job, to be honest. I’m the one who pushes the tush…”

Hurts finished the Super Bowl with 221 passing yards and two touchdowns. While Barkley was mostly contained during the game, finishing with 57 rushing yards, he was a key part of the Eagles’ success this past season.

The three-time Pro Bowler rushed for a career-high 2,005 yards during the regular season. He added 499 rushing yards in the Eagles’ four playoff games.

  • Patrick Mahomes’ grandfather reportedly ‘hanging on’ in hospice care to watch grandson play in Super Bowl LIX

Patrick Mahomes’ grandfather reportedly ‘hanging on’ in hospice care to watch grandson play in Super Bowl LIX

Patrick Mahomes will look to become the first quarterback in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls Sunday, and he is also looking to give at least one more gift to his grandfather Randy, who is in hospice care.

Mahomes’ mother, Randi Mahomes, shared the news that Patrick’s grandfather was in hospice care Jan. 24, just a day before the quarterback led the Kansas City Chiefs to an AFC championship win over the Buffalo Bills.

Now, Randi said her father is “hanging on,” hoping to see Mahomes lead the Chiefs to one more victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday’s Super Bowl, according to People.

“I know that it has meant a lot to him,” Randi said. “And I think he’s hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play.

“I mean, he must be such a proud grandpa, so proud. And my mom was very proud, and his other grandparents [were too].”

Randi added that one thing her father still remembers is the date and time of the Super Bowl.

Randi announced her father was in the hospital in mid-September.

“Prayer warriors please pray for my daddy. He is in the hospital and is not well His name is Randy,” she wrote on X Sept. 14. A few days later, her post on Instagram said, “This is how I fight my battles. If you are seeing this, take a moment, and PRAY for my dad now.”

Patrick Mahomes will have that as motivation as he looks to make history for his team and family Sunday.

Mahomes’ opponent, the Eagles, will also have some motivation.

After a medical plane crashed on a street near the Roosevelt Mall in Philadelphia Jan. 31, the Eagles are now playing to honor one of their young fans.

Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown told reporters Wednesday he and his teammates are playing for Trey Howard, a fourth grader who suffered a brain injury while using his body to shield his sister from the plane crash.

“He’s a hero,” the Eagles wide receiver said Wednesday. “Stepping in to save his sister. You can tell he has great parents. He was raised right. For him to wake up and say, ‘Did I miss it?’ It’s crazy. Something of that magnitude takes place, and he’s worried about a football game. Of course, we want to do it for him.”

On top of that, both teams will also have the honor of playing in the first Super Bowl attended by a sitting president. President Trump will be in New Orleans for the game Sunday.

Mahomes gave his thoughts on Trump attending the game to reporters Wednesday.

“It’s always cool to be able to play in front of a sitting president,” Mahomes said. “Someone that is at the top position in our country.”

It will also mean a lot to Mahomes’ mother, who announced her endorsement for Trump a day before the election in a video message to OutKick at the Chiefs’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Nov. 4.

“I think for a president of our country, of the United States, I think it’s amazing,” she said. “I think whoever the president is, to support the teams, to support America’s best sport. … I think it’s really neat for a president to be able to support it. You know what, let’s do it.”

Tiger Woods to play in Genesis Invitational, marking return to competition for first time since British Open

For the first time since the British Open in July, Tiger Woods is back in action on a golf course.

Woods, 49, committed Friday to playing 18 holes at the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines.

It will be the first time Woods will be competing since he had a microdiscectomy in September to alleviate pain in his legs. It was the sixth surgery he has undergone on his lower back.

It is also the first time Woods will be playing since the loss of his mother, Kultida Woods, who died Tuesday at the age of 80.

Normally, the Genesis Invitational is at the Riviera Country Club, but the tournament was moved to Torrey Pines due to the wildfires that devastated the Los Angeles community.

Woods has had a lot of success during his illustrious career at Torrey Pines, with eight wins on the public course alongside the Pacific Ocean.

Torrey Pines is the course where Woods last finished in the top 10 at a PGA Tour event, when he was in a tie for ninth at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2020.

There is no cut at the Genesis Invitational, meaning Woods will be walking for all four days no matter his performance.

  • Americans’ insurance rates are soaring and lawsuits play a significant role

Americans’ insurance rates are soaring and lawsuits play a significant role

Americans’ home and auto insurance rates have been soaring for years, with inflation, mounting losses from natural disasters, and rising repair and construction costs all playing a role.

But the industry points to a significant driver behind accelerating premiums that often goes overlooked: the mounting lawsuits and payouts that cost insurers.

The APCIA says the average American pays a $4,200 “tort tax” due to rising costs associated with abuse of the legal system. (iStock / iStock)

David Sampson, president and CEO of the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA), told FOX Business that even with all the pressures the industry is currently facing with huge losses due to hurricanes and wildfires, insurance regulatory dysfunction in some states, and the threat of tariffs driving up costs further, “Our number one priority is still addressing legal system abuse, because it is the major cost driver that’s having a huge negative impact on insurance availability and affordability.”

The APCIA says the American household pays more than a $4,200 “tort tax” due to unnecessary and abusive litigation across the country that raises the costs of products and services like groceries and gas.

CAR INSURANCE RATES SOARED IN 2024; DRIVERS IN THESE STATES PAY THE MOST

The insurance trade group shows data indicating the average personal injury verdict has ballooned over the last decade or more, going from around $39,300 in 2010 to more than $125,300 in 2020 – a 319% increase.

charts showing rise in personal injury awards

The APCIA points to data showing the median personal injury award in the U.S. more than tripled in the last decade. (APCIA)

Sampson said nuclear verdicts – defined as jury verdicts of $10 million or more – also continue to rise, with the top 100 verdicts increasing 350% from an average of $64 million to $225 million in just the last six years, which he said shows they are “totally out of proportion to any legitimate damages that are out there.”

He provided everyday examples of legal abuses.

STATE FARM ASKS CALIFORNIA TO APPROVE RATE HIKES AFTER WILDFIRES

One is jury anchoring, where lawyers attempt to influence juries by throwing out astronomical numbers for awards. He asserted that when attorneys have billboards up advertising that they won their client $20 million for an auto accident, they are trying to affect the jury pool by putting out astronomical numbers that have no relation to the particular case involved, trying to shift the jury’s mindset.

Another legal abuse is phantom damages, where plaintiffs’ attorneys are able to only show juries how much a victim was billed for medical services, as opposed to the lower amount the health insurance company actually paid because of its contract with the hospital.

Premises liability has been one of the biggest sources of legal abuse, so multiple states have imposed reforms to make sure property owners and businesses are only liable for things they can directly control.

WILL HURRICANES AND WILDFIRES CAUSE INSURANCE PRICES TO RISE NATIONWIDE?

The practice of plaintiffs’ attorneys bringing in outside investors to try and influence the litigation process through third party litigation funding (TPLF) has driven up the cost of litigation, too, amid growing concerns that foreign adversaries are using these avenues to invest in U.S. litigation against American companies.

    Jury duty

Legal abuses are soaring, accelerating the rise of insurance rates, according to the APCIA. ( Joe Raedle/Getty Images / Getty Images)

Sampson says that in those instances, the victim is no longer in control of their own lawsuit, meaning they can’t settle without the permission of the people who are investing in and financing these lawsuits.

“You’ve had the justice system turned basically into a casino where these major investors are hoping to strike it rich on these suits and they get paid out the majority of the proceeds whenever they do,” he said.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

“Strike it lucky on these major lawsuits, and then, not only do you see that on some of these individual personal injury cases, but even more problematic – as tragic as that is – to the nation’s economy is that you have entities that are backed by foreign players, foreign parties like the [Chinese Communist Party] and others who are filing these third party litigation financed lawsuits against major American industries, especially in the technology sector, and they use these lawsuits to try to gain access to intellectual property through the discovery process.”

Graham has several hurdles to leap in order to play – a successful week of practice is rather important, but Graham said he is “just enjoying the moment.”

“When I got hurt, I saw it as a possibility,” he said, regarding playing in the Super Bowl. “I talked to people and they said it was a possibility. I rehabbed as hard as I could… So when the time came they would give me the chance.”

Eagles’ Jalen Hurts avoids famous name for wildly successful play: ‘I keep it very standard’

The Philadelphia Eagles’ success in short-yard situations has yet to be duplicated.

The so-called “tush push” took the NFL by storm a few years ago. Quarterback Jalen Hurts lines up under center, and as he snaps the ball, he’s pushed across the line to gain or the goal line for a new set of downs or a touchdown.

It was the success of the play that helped them extend drives and land the Eagles in the Super Bowl two years ago. Philadelphia is back in the Super Bowl, and the “tush push” is firmly on the mind of NFL fans ahead of Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.

But Hurts admitted he doesn’t fall into the hoopla around the play and keeps the name of it “very standard.”

“That’s what you call it. I call it the quarterback sneak,” Hurts said. “I keep it very standard.”

The “tush push” was stopped only four times during the 2023 season, and it became a hotly contested topic: Should the NFL ban the play?

NFL executive Troy Vincent threw cold water on that notion last February.

“Don’t punish a team that strategically does it well,” Vincent said during an appearance on “Pro Football Talk Live” at the time.

Whether you call it the “tush push” or the “brotherly shove,” it seems the play will be in the spotlight once again.

The Washington Commanders failed to stop it multiple times and their consistent offsides in the NFC Championship nearly caused the refs to award Philadelphia a score.

The Eagles and Rams are the only two teams that are a part of the NFL’s Global Markets Program in Australia, which was made to build fandom and support outside the United States.

The MCG holds roughly 100,000 people.

It wouldn’t be the first time the NFL toyed with Australia, as the Denver Broncos and then-San Diego Chargers played a preseason game there in 1999.
