Pro boxing match could take place at Alcatraz this summer: report

A historic landmark may host a professional boxing match this summer.

According to Ring, WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez is close to an agreement to get into the ring on Alcatraz Island.

Ring notes that Riyadh Season promoter Turki Alalshikh recently told ESPN he was hoping to host a fight at the former prison turned museum one day. Lopez will fight for the brand.

“You know, sometimes I get in my mind I want different places to do [fights]. Sometimes in mountains, maybe someday in the Pyramids in Mexico, someday in [the] Eiffel Tower in France, [the] Colosseum in Italy,” Alalshikh said.

It’s unclear whether the title would be up for grabs, but considering Lopez defended his title twice last year, it seems likely.

The prison opened in 1934, but it didn’t even last 30 years.

Considering its 1.25-mile distance to shore, the Bay Area island was considered practically escape-proof, although there were 14 documented attempted escapes.

The most notorious one was the June 11, 1962, escape by John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris, which inspired “Escape from Alcatraz.”

It remains a mystery whether the three reached shore and survived. The FBI concluded the escapees drowned due to harsh conditions.

The three prisoners chiseled an escape route from their own jail cells and built makeshift, papier mâché heads.

The final attempted escape from the prison, almost six months later, inspired what has become the swimming route of the “Escape from Alcatraz” triathlon.

Both Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly served time at the prison.

Across all sports, every new class in their respective Hall of Fame brings about spirited debate. This year for the Pro Football Hall of Fame is no different.

But for one finalist, the circumstances surrounding his place in Canton are more than just a case of championships and stats. His place in the Hall of Fame will likely come down to a tragic case of a murder-suicide.

There are five total finalists for the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame senior class, including a coach and a contributor. The players up for vote are Maxie Baughan, Sterling Sharpe and Jim Tyrer.

Of the three, the biggest questions surround Tyrer.

    Who is Jim Tyrer?

Born in Newark, Ohio, on Feb. 25, 1939, Jim Tyrer is largely considered one of the most dominant offensive tackles of his era.

After playing football at Ohio State, where he was an All-America choice, Tyrer began his 14-year playing career with the Dallas Texans of the American Football League in 1961. His sheer size and strength at left tackle translated to early success on the field, which carried over with the team’s move to Kansas City and the eventual merger with the NFL.

Tyrer was a three-time AFL champion and nine-time AFL All-Star, and he helped the Chiefs win the franchise’s first Super Bowl in 1970. He was a starter in each of his 13 seasons with Chiefs, playing in 180 consecutive games for the third-longest streak in team history.

Tyrer was selected as a member of the AFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1960s and is in the Chiefs’ Hall of Fame. He played his final season for Washington in 1974.

It’s no doubt that Tyrer’s career is worthy of consideration for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but the tragic events that took place on Sept. 15, 1980, have kept his name off the ballot for more than 40 years.

Tyrer was a finalist for the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility and was largely expected to be selected. But in the fall of 1980, that would change.

According to KCTV’s reporting at the time, Tyrer shot his wife, Martha, dead just after 4 a.m. in the bedroom of their home while their four children slept before eventually taking his own life. He was 41 and Martha was 40.

While those closest to the family, including teammates, were shocked by the news, reports would soon surface that there were issues.

ESPN reporter Mark Fainaru-Wada told NPR last week that Tyrer had struggled to find work after his playing career had ended and that the family was experiencing financial struggles. There were also rumors that Tyrer had been dealing with “depression” and “paranoia.”

But in the nearly 45 years that have passed and with the development of science with regard to the long-term effects of playing in contact sports, many argue that Tyrer likely suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Dr. Doug Paone, who treated Tyrer days before the murder-suicide, told the Kansas City Star’s Vahe Gregorian in December that he is confident that Tyrer had CTE.

“If it walks like a duck, it quacks, it has webbed feet and water goes off its back, it’s not a zebra: It’s CTE,” he said. “(Tyrer) would be the poster child for CTE.”

    What the voters say

At least three of the five senior finalists will be elected to the Pro Football Hall. They will need 80% of the votes from the Selection Committee, who will be allowed to vote for three finalists. If none receive that percentage, then the sole finalist with the most votes will be inducted into the 2025 class.

For Tyrer, the voters appear divided. ESPN spoke to some last month when Tyrer was named a finalist.

“It’s morally abhorrent and unacceptable to put a murderer in the Hall of Fame if you have the power to do otherwise,” longtime voter Jason Cole told the outlet, adding that he has “incredible compassion for the family.”

Cole noted that considering CTE would be “opening up a giant can of worms.”

Opposite of that, Gregorian told ESPN that CTE could be used to explain the tragedy that led to Tyrer and his wife’s untimely death.

“I think when you see that this is a man, who had for decades lived a life that was admired by many, that this change in him was caused by [CTE],” Gregorian said, “… I think to me, it says this was because of severe brain damage, not being of a willful act by this person. I don’t know, that makes me look at it differently.”

The bylaws of the selection process instruct voters not to consider any off-the-field contributions – good or bad – in their decision-making. The class of 2025 will be announced next Thursday at the NFL Honors in New Orleans ahead of Super Bowl LIX.

  • ATF accused of ‘circumventing’ Trump order to place DEI staff on paid leave

ATF accused of ‘circumventing’ Trump order to place DEI staff on paid leave

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has been accused of allegedly quietly changing the job title of its former diversity officer as President Donald Trump ordered all federal diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) employees be placed on paid leave.

“The ATF defied @realDonaldTrump’s order to place DEI workers on leave, instead giving their DEI officer a new title. They attack citizens’ rights, ignore leadership, and act as though they’re above the law. Enough is enough. Time to abolish the ATF!” Republican Missouri Rep. Eric Burlison posted to X.

The ATF, a federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Justice’s umbrella, previously employed Lisa T. Boykin as its chief diversity officer before her title was changed on the ATF’s website this week to “senior executive” with the ATF. An archived link of the ATF’s website reviewed by Fox Digital shows Boykin was listed as the chief diversity officer as recently as Tuesday – Trump’s second day in the Oval Office – and now shows her as working as the agency’s “senior executive.”

Trump had railed against DEI programs and offices at the federal level, as well as in the education system, throughout his campaign. Upon taking office on Monday, he inked an executive order terminating ”illegal DEI and ‘diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility’ (DEIA) mandates, policies, programs, preferences, and activities in the Federal Government, under whatever name they appear.”

The following day, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) told agency and department leaders to begin shutting down DEI offices and to place DEI employees on paid leave.

“Send a notification to all employees of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) offices that they are being placed on paid administrative leave effective immediately as the agency takes steps to close/end all DEIA initiatives, offices and programs,” the OPM directive, which was obtained by Fox News Digital, read.

A biography for Boykin from 2023 detailed that she began working as ATF’s Human Resources Operations Division in 2016 and “as a collateral duty, in 2021, Mrs. Boykin also began serving as the Bureau’s Chief Diversity Officer,” the New York Post reported.

“With the Bureau’s continued focus on enhancing DEIA, Mrs. Boykin currently assumes the work of the CDO in a fulltime capacity, leading and implementing departmental programs and mandates, while bringing renewed vision and effective strategies to maintain an informed DEIA culture for the Bureau,” Boykin’s bio added.

When asked about the title change and subsequent criticism on social media, an ATF spokesman responded that the agency has followed DEI directives from the Trump administration.

“ATF began implementing OPM’s Initial Guidance on DEIA immediately after its issuance on January 21, 2025, in response to the President’s Executive Orders. We have proactively taken the necessary steps to ensure compliance with this guidance, including by placing impacted personnel on administrative leave,” an ATF spokesman told Fox News Digital.

Fox News Digital asked for clarification on whether Boykin’s new title protects her from administrative leave but did not immediately receive a reply.

Fox News Digital also reached out to Boykin on her ATF email and received an automatic response noting she was unavailable to reply.

“I am currently unavailable and unable to return e-mails at this time,” the email read.

Social media commenters and critics of the Biden administration’s diversity initiatives slammed the ATF employee’s title change on social media, clamming the agency is “circumventing” the Trump administration’s orders.

Biden championed diversity initiatives under his administration, rolling back the first Trump administration’s policies that banned diversity training in government agencies during his first week in office in 2021.

“In the weeks ahead, I will be reaffirming the federal government’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and accessibility, building on the work we started in the Obama-Biden administration. That’s why I’m rescinding the previous administration’s harmful ban on diversity and sensitivity training,” Biden said in January of 2021. “Unity and healing must begin with understanding and truth, not ignorance and lies.”

Major bank CEO says Trump’s fiscal policies makes US ‘the No. 1 place to invest’ again

From mergers and acquisitions to deregulation and “competitive” tax structure, Bank of America’s top executive shared an optimistic picture of the U.S. economy under the second Trump administration.

“When you talk to the people around here, from all over the world, [in] business, it’s the No. 1 place to invest. Not by a little bit, by a lot,” BofA Chairman and CEO Brian Moynihan said of America’s economic landscape during a “Mornings with Maria” interview from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“If you go back to the first Trump administration and the tax changes, that brought America’s tax rate down to where it was competitive. America always has… [a] big market, biggest economy in the world, growing, et cetera,” he continued. “America has good business conditions in terms of talent, people, worker flexibility, all those types of things.

“So you put all that together, it was a great place to invest. You go in and say now, I’m going to move the regulation back, and now I’m going to create even better conditions for investment.”

Bank of America kicked off Q4 earnings season with surging profits, reporting a double beat of $6.67 billion, as its investment banking fees saw a 44% increase to $1.7 billion.

Much of the banking industry is expecting more M&A deals coming to market under President Donald Trump, while he also plans to pull back regulations that stymied transactional activity during the Biden administration.

Former Biden appointees from the Federal Trade Commission, Federal Communications Commission and the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division halted almost all M&A activity since his term began in 2021. Those who chose to defy the regulatory restrictions faced prolonged legal battles with the Biden deal police.

“We were sitting here last year, the issue of business inflation and interest rates, but another big issue was the amount of regulation in small and medium-sized companies, and in the banking system, and the mortgage companies. And the feeling is that it will now swing back to more normalcy,” Moynihan noted.

“It swung way too far in the last administration,” he added. “We tried to explain to them that was going to cause them troubles… But I think it’s more important that the general economy feels a little bit of relief on regulation across the board, the ability to get deals done, and American companies can now go out domestically and around the world and be the kings that they’re supposed to be.”

Moynihan explained that Bank of America’s top research team is expecting 2.4% GDP growth for the U.S. in 2025, the M&A pipeline being “full” and a 20% increase in IPOs.

“Therefore, that says the capital can be put to work. So all that bodes well,” the chairman and CEO said. “The enthusiasm by our team for what’s ahead is far greater than it was in the fourth quarter because that was sort of under the old regime.”
