Tom Brady’s ex-teammate: It’s ‘scary’ Patrick Mahomes could compete with Brady as NFL’s GOAT

Patrick Mahomes is off to the best start to an NFL career ever.

With a win Sunday, not only would he be the first quarterback to win three Super Bowls in a row, he would become the first quarterback to win four Lombardi Trophies before turning 30.

While Tom Brady still has a hold on the title of the NFL’s GOAT, Mahomes could unseat Brady.

But Danny Amendola, who won two rings with Brady, said a win Sunday may be necessary to get the conversation going.

“I think the first step would be to three-peat. Would be something nobody’s ever done before,” Amendola said of his fellow Texas Tech alum in a recent interview with Fox News Digital.

“He’s a great quarterback, man. Time will tell. He’s still young, gonna play for maybe another 10 years at a high level. It’s wild, and it’s scary to know he’s been to so many Super Bowls. And he’s taken his team to a championship level every year. It’s up to him. It’s great to be a fan, to watch, to support. I’m a friend of his. We went to the same university. So, I’ll always support Patrick. It’s great to see him be so successful.”

Amendola is also a fan of Olipop, a fiber-filled, prebiotic soda with no more than 50 calories per can.

“I’ve been a huge fan of them for a while now. It has classic soda taste with the benefits of a functional drink. So, it’s good for you. It tastes good. They have 15-plus flavors. Can find it at Whole Foods, Target, a bunch of places. It’s a great way to drink soda,” Amendola said.

Like most former players, Amendola appreciates the Chiefs.

“It’s so hard to get to the playoffs, to put together a successful season. To get to the big game is everyone’s goal, and to win it is unbelievable. I know how hard it is to get there,” he said.

But he even took it a step further. While Amendola owes much of his success to Brady, he acknowledged he is rooting for Mahomes this weekend.

Trump says NFL’s new kickoff rule ‘actually makes football more dangerous’

President Donald Trump is expected to be at Super Bowl LIX Sunday, and it appears he’s looking forward to it.

If he does attend, Trump will watch the Kansas City Chiefs try to become the first team to win three consecutive Lombardi Trophies.

On the other sideline will be the Philadelphia Eagles, who will be playing in their third Super Bowl in seven seasons. It’s a rematch of the Super Bowl two years ago, which Kansas City won 38-35.

Trump gave a quick preview of the game on Truth Social, praising the “two great quarterbacks,” Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts; “an unbelievable running back,” seemingly Saquon Barkley; and “incredible coaching” from Andy Reid and Nick Sirianni.

In the post, Trump also appeared to declare Travis Kelce the “best tight end … ever.”

But he does want the NFL to go back to its old kickoff rules.

“If they would only get rid of that really weird looking new Kickoff ‘deal,’ which actually makes football more dangerous, they would be doing everybody, especially the fans, a big favor,” Trump wrote.

It was not the first time Trump has been critical of the rule. He wrote that the league should ditch the “ridiculous” rule shortly after winning the election.

He also mentioned it as a point of contention when he appeared on the “Let’s Go!” podcast with sportscaster Jim Gray and former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

He wrote about it on Truth Social in early September as well.

“I can’t believe the NFL is effectively getting rid of the always exciting Kick Off Return. Such an exciting part of football. What are they doing? BEGINNING OF THE END!” he wrote.

The NFL is in its first season with its dynamic kickoff rule, which was essentially taken from the XFL. Players are unable to move until after the ball is touched or hits the ground.

George Kittle recipient of NFL’s Salute to Service Award amid $250K in donations to military nonprofits

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle has been named the recipient of the NFL’s Salute to Service Award.

The award was first given out in 2012 as part of the NFL’s and USAA’s commitment to recognize and honor the military and veteran community.

Kittle hosts military members for every Niners home game, donating over 400 tickets over the last six seasons. He and his family created an app to offer free mental health services for veterans.

Kittle has also donated over $250,000 to military nonprofits and further highlighted military organizations through My Cause My Cleats.

“I am incredibly thankful and honored to be this year’s Salute to Service Award recipient. This is my fourth time being nominated by the 49ers, which is an absolute honor because it’s important to me to show gratitude and support to the military,” Kittle said in a statement. “My appreciation for the military stems from watching my Uncle Pat serve multiple tours with the National Guard and seeing firsthand how much it impacted him and his family while he was overseas.

“Without my family and their unwavering support, I would not be able to create these genuine and authentic relationships with the real heroes and the ones who should be receiving this award, the active-duty members, Veterans, TAPS and families that have lost loved ones in the line of fire. The support you see for the military around the league is so important and the fact that guys on every team do it, not just the nominees, is awesome. We are allowed to live the lives we live here because of the sacrifices they make, so we’re just trying to honor them, show our support, and share as much love as we can.”

Kittle was one of the three finalists, besting Minnesota Vikings running back Aaron Jones and Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Morgan Fox.

Jones grew up in a military household; his father, Alvin, served 29 years in the Army, while his mother, Vurgess, served for 27. Jones’ older brother, Xavier, serves in the Air Force. Jones and his twin brother Alvin Jr., founded the A&A All the Way Foundation in 2020 to support the youth of military families.

Fox also grew up in a military community and donated 100 tickets to veterans. He has hosted members of the Wounded Warrior Project at Chargers practices.

  • NFL’s Roger Goodell talks about possibility of expanding regular season to 18 games

NFL’s Roger Goodell talks about possibility of expanding regular season to 18 games

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke about the possibility of an 18-game regular season ahead of Super Bowl LIX during a press conference on Monday.

Goodell said that there is “a lot of work to be done” before expanding the season to 18 games and said he has not had any formal discussions with the players’ union about adding a game.

The commissioner did say that he has had informal discussions with NFL Players Association Executive Director Lloyd Howell Jr. about making the jump to 18 games.

“We know fans love football, and they want more football, but we have to be incredibly sensitive and smart with the balance and how we deal with that.”

Goodell said the changes the league has made to reduce concussions and other injuries have made adding another game more feasible. He spoke in April on “The Pat McAfee Show” about his desire to extend the NFL regular season to 18 games, instead of the 17 game season right now.

The NFL made the jump to 17 games prior to the 2021 season, when they went from playing 16 regular season games and four preseason games to 17 regular season games and three preseason games.

Should the NFL decide to expand the regular season, the Super Bowl would then be pushed back to Presidents’ Day weekend.

  • NFL’s Roger Goodell slams ‘ridiculous’ theory around Chiefs ahead of Super Bowl LIX

NFL’s Roger Goodell slams ‘ridiculous’ theory around Chiefs ahead of Super Bowl LIX

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell attempted to dismantle any notion of favoritism from officials toward the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday during his pre-Super Bowl LIX press conference.

Goodell was asked about the theory of NFL officiating, which stems from the insinuation that the Chiefs are on the receiving end of favorable calls during games. It came to light during the team’s playoff wins over the Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills.

    But Goodell dispelled the idea.

“This sort of reminds me a little bit of ‘the script,’ right? That I write a script and I have a script for the entire seasons,” he said. “I think a lot of those theories are things that happen in social media, and they get a new life. … Nobody wants it to be their theory.

“I understand it. I think it reflects a lot of the fans’ passion. I think it’s also a reminder for us on how important officiating is. I think the men and women officiating the NFL are outstanding. They have the highest possible standards. That’s a ridiculous theory for anyone who might take it seriously, but at the end of the day, it’s something we always have to continue to work on, how we make our officiating better at all times.”

The two calls in their win over the Texans ignited a firestorm. The penalties were called after hits on quarterback Patrick Mahomes. A few questionable calls in the win over the Bills also raised eyebrows, too.

FOX NFL analyst Rob Gronkowski told Fox News Digital he noticed officials were a bit more “lenient” toward the Chiefs.

Regardless, Goodell defended officials and highlighted the competition.

“If you look at the Chiefs’ record, which I think is an amazing thing,” he said. “People talk about the competitiveness in our league, the Chiefs with their 15 wins, 11 of those 15 games were within one score. I think that talks about the competitiveness of our game and the importance of how we officiate but also the competitiveness of how we play it.”

NFL’s Roger Goodell defends league’s DEI policies, sees the benefits

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell defended the league’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies during a pre-Super Bowl LIX press conference with media members on Monday.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order to end DEI programs across the federal government in his first few days back at the White House.

Goodell was asked about the league’s commitment to diversity at the press conference.

“We got into diversity efforts because we felt like it was the right thing for the National Football League, and we’re going to continue those efforts because we’ve not only convinced ourselves, we’ve proven ourselves, that it does make the NFL better,” Goodell said. “We’re not in this because it’s a trend to get in or a trend to get out of it.

“Our efforts are fundamental in trying to attract the best possible talent in the National Football League both on and off the field as I said previously. We see that. We see how it benefits the National Football League, and so I think we’ll continue those efforts.”

Goodell said the league’s DEI efforts were a reflection of the foundation of the league.

“I think it’s also clearly a reflection on our fan base and our communities and our players. People talk a lot about the Rooney Rule… for us there’s no requirement to hire a particular individual on the basis of race or gender. It’s simply on the basis of looking at a campus of candidates that reflect our communities and to look at the kind of talent that exists there, and then you make the best decision on who is hired,” he added.

“So many of us, including the National Football League at our office, are doing that voluntarily at all levels because it has benefited us. And I hear that from companies on a global basis. That’s a very strong hiring practice we’re adopting also.”

With Trump nixing DEI efforts in the government, some companies have rolled back their own initiatives. Walmart, McDonald’s Amazon, Ford and Lowe’s being just some of those companies.

Goodell was asked if there would be any consternation between the league and its corporate sponsors should the companies roll back DEI initiatives.

“We don’t make policies for our sponsors or any of the corporations or networks or partners that we deal with,” he said. “We have a lot of conversations about the importance of it to us. We will obviously take everything into consideration…  There’s a lot of corporations who have been tied to so-called changing their diversity policies and haven’t really called directly about that. There’s a lot of conversations that go on about that.”

Goodell said he didn’t have time to reflect about his role in the NFL’s diversity commitment but believed it made the league better.

“I am proud of it in this sense — I believe our diversity efforts have led to making the NFL better. It’s attracted better talent. We think we’re better when we get different perspectives, people with different backgrounds, whether they’re women or men or people of color — we make ourselves stronger, and we make ourselves better when we have that,” he said.

Tom Brady’s former teammate, Rob Gronkowski, discusses how Patrick Mahomes can dethrone Brady as NFL’s GOAT

Patrick Mahomes is on the fast track of surpassing Tom Brady as the NFL’s greatest ever.

With a win in this year’s Super Bowl, Mahomes would become the first player to win four rings before turning 30.

And if you compare the quarterbacks’ first seven full seasons, Mahomes’ numbers trump Brady’s.

Brady won more than half of his rings after turning 37, cementing himself in the conversation. But the chatter will be hot and heavy if the Kansas City Chiefs can finish a three-peat, something no team has done in the Super Bowl era.

Rob Gronkowski had a front-row seat for Brady’s illustrious career, winning four titles with him, three in New England, and one more in Tampa Bay.

“Good thing I went back to football and did that,” Gronkowski recalled in a recent interview with Fox News Digital.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

But even Gronk knows his quarterback might be in trouble. However, it will be tough, and there’s a reason why Brady has the upper hand for the time being.

“In order for Patrick Mahomes to dethrone (Brady), it’s gonna be tough because Tom beat him twice in playoff football. We absolutely demolished Patrick Mahomes,” Gronkowski said, referring to the 2021 Super Bowl.

    Advantage, Brady.

But that doesn’t mean there’s no chance for Mahomes. Gronk said Mahomes doesn’t even need to match Brady in titles before being in the conversation.

“He’s gonna have to win about five, six championships in order to get in that conversation of being the greatest ahead of Tom Brady,” Gronk said.

Those sentiments echo those of Victor Cruz, who already has Mahomes as the “No. 2” to Brady.

“To me, I can’t put him above [Tom] Brady just yet, but he’s right there. He’s 1A, 1B for me,” Cruz told Fox News Digital in October.

“If he gets to five and he continues to keep his team relevant year in and year out, when we look up at the numbers, it’s gonna be insane just to see where he nets out and just to see when it’s all said and done where he is, because what he’s doing thus far, it’s pretty special.”

First, the Chiefs will have to get through the Philadelphia Eagles, who the Chiefs beat two years ago in the Super Bowl to get Mahomes his second title. He earned his third last year against the San Francisco 49ers, the same team Mahomes beat for his first ring.
