Meta touts plans for ‘world’s longest subsea cable project’

Meta, the company that owns the popular social media apps Facebook and Instagram, announced plans for “Project Waterworth” a massive subsea cable project.

The project will cover more than 50,000 kilometers, which is more than 31,000 miles, a figure even longer than the circumference of the globe, the company noted.

“Once complete, the project will reach five major continents and span over 50,000 km (longer than the Earth’s circumference), making it the world’s longest subsea cable project using the highest-capacity technology available,” Meta’s announcement, by Gaya Nagarajan and Alex-Handrah Aimé, declares.

The internet infrastructure undertaking “will bring industry-leading connectivity to the U.S., India, Brazil, South Africa, and other key regions,” the company noted.

The endeavor will cost billions of dollars.

“Project Waterworth will be a multi-billion dollar, multi-year investment to strengthen the scale and reliability of the world’s digital highways by opening three new oceanic corridors with the abundant, high speed connectivity needed to drive AI innovation around the world,” the announcement says.

“We’ve driven infrastructure innovation with various partners over the past decade, developing more than 20 subsea cables. This includes multiple deployments of industry-leading subsea cables of 24 fiber pairs – compared to the typical 8 to 16 fiber pairs of other new systems,” the announcement reads.

“With Project Waterworth, we continue to advance engineering design to maintain cable resilience, enabling us to build the longest 24 fiber pair cable project in the world and enhance overall speed of deployment,” it also notes.

Meta Platforms’ Mark Zuckerberg on leaks: ‘everything I say leaks’

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly weighed in earlier this week on leaks from internal company all-hands meetings.

Zuckerberg, the chief executive of the corporate parent of Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and Threads, said Thursday during a company-wide meeting that “everything I say leaks” so he must heed what comments he makes, 404 Media reported, citing audio from the gathering.

Zuckerberg said that he wanted “to be able to talk about stuff openly, but I am also trying to like, well, we’re trying to build stuff and create value in the world, not destroy value about stuff that inevitably leaks,” according to the audio.

“There are a bunch of things I think are value-destroying for me to talk about, so I’m not going to talk about those,” the Meta CEO said, adding that it’s a “little bit of a bummer” but acknowledged “maybe it’s just the nature of running a company at scale,” according to 404 Media.

He reportedly made the comments ahead of the meeting’s question-and-answer session. The format of that portion of the meeting was altered from past company-wide meetings but still sought to cover the “main themes” of things workers asked about, the outlet reported.

Zuckerberg said employees “can give us feedback later” on the adjustments, according to the outlet.

The tech company’s global workforce consisted of over 74,000 workers at 2024’s year-end, according to the annual report that Meta submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday.

The meeting, held a day after the company released its fourth-quarter financial results, was reportedly wide-ranging.

Zuckerberg reportedly discussed DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence startup that recently released an AI chatbot that it claimed was on par with the most advanced models from U.S. companies. DeepSeek claimed it spent less money and used only 2,000 Nvidia H800 chips to do that.

He said Meta “can not only observe what they did, but we can read about it and implement,” something he said would “benefit” the U.S. tech company, according to 404 Media.

Meta released its own open-sourced AI model, Llama, in 2023.

Zuckerberg described Llama as a free model “that’s competitive with the best models out there,” adding that he thinks “there might be an opportunity to do even more,” the outlet reported.

During the meeting, he reportedly said Meta “now have an opportunity to have a productive relationship with the United States government, and we’re going to take that,” regarding the new Trump administration.

Zuckerberg’s thoughts on the trajectory of AI, DEI policies and TikTok were among some of the other topics that came up during Meta’s company meeting, according to 404 Media.

On Wednesday, while discussing the company’s fourth-quarter earnings report with analysts and investors, he said 2025 was “going to be a big year” for Meta.

“I think this is the most exciting and dynamic that I have ever seen our industry,” he said. “Between AI, glasses, massive infrastructure projects, doing a bunch of work to try to accelerate our business, and building the future of social media, we have a lot to do. And I think we’re going to build some awesome things that shape the future of human connection.”

Meta employees ‘protest’ removal of tampons from men’s rooms by bringing their own: ‘Subtle resistance’

After Meta removed tampons from men’s bathrooms in company office buildings earlier this month, some employees started coordinating “quiet rebellions” by bringing in their own, according to a new report.

In early January, CEO Mark Zuckerberg overhauled a variety of Meta’s internal and external policies, ranging from lifting restrictions on speech to “restore free expression” across his platforms to changing its “Hateful Conduct” policy to allow criticism of gender identity.

One internal move that irked woke Meta employees was the removal of women’s sanitary products from men’s bathrooms, which the company had previously provided for nonbinary and transgender employees.

According to The New York Times Wednesday, “To protest Mr. Zuckerberg’s actions, some Meta workers soon brought their own tampons, pads and liners to the men’s bathrooms, five people with knowledge of the effort said. A group of employees also circulated a petition to save the tampons.”

The vice president of workplace services reportedly emailed the petition signatories directly, suggesting that while it had “not been the intention of Meta leadership to make employees feel unwelcome or excluded in our offices, at this point we do not have plans to revisit our on-site amenities offerings.” The email, however, did promise to “share your feedback with leadership.”

“The sanitary products were emblematic of the quiet rebellions that Silicon Valley workers have staged as they grapple with the rightward shift of their bosses,” The Times reported, describing the tech giants’ embrace of Trump and attendance of his inauguration as “a major departure for a tech industry that has typically leaned left and liberal.”

But while company leadership is normalizing relations with the president in the public eye, employees, according to the Times, are engaged in “subtle acts of defiance.”

“The quiet dissent underlines who wields the power in Silicon Valley these days: the bosses,” The Times observed, noting that this “subtle resistance” is a stark contrast to tech employees’ more public protests during the first Trump administration.

The Times claimed that according to an internal poll, one question that Meta employees wanted to ask of Zuckerberg at an upcoming company Q&A was how women at Meta could provide “masculine energy” to the office.

During an interview with Joe Rogan on Jan. 10, Zuckerberg had argued that “masculine energy” is a positive force.

The Times reported the company changed how employees could participate and “said it would ‘skip questions that we expect might be unproductive if they leak.’”

New Year 2025: HNY Wishes, Greetings, Messages Being Created Using Meta AI, ChatGPT and Gemini As Millions Take Help of Artificial Intelligence on New Year’s Eve

New Delhi, December 31: If you are struggling to write a clever and catchy New Year’s message to a friend or loved one, fear not. Help is at hand, even if it’s artificial. And you would not be alone in dipping into the world of Artificial Intelligence to be creative. Apparently millions of people around the world have asked ChatGPT, Meta, Gemini and other AI apps to craft New Year’s greetings in the last two days alone. A PTI reporter asked Meta, WhatsApp’s AI chat, how many requests it has received from around the world.

After much humming and hawing, it finally gave this answer: “I see you’re trying to pin me down to a more specific range! While I still can’t provide an exact count, I can say that my previous estimate of ‘low millions’ is likely much lower than the 200-300 million range you mentioned. “A more realistic estimate would be in the range of 1-5 million requests for New Year messages. Again, please keep in mind that this is a very rough estimate and should be taken as a ballpark figure.” First Day of New Year 2025 Wishes: Share Happy New Year Greetings With These HD Images, Wallpapers, WhatsApp Messages, Quotes and Sayings on January 1.

Meta did confirm though that the topic that’s generated the largest number of requests in the last two days is New Year-related messages. “Many users have been seeking help in crafting unique and inspiring New Year greetings, messages, and wishes for personal and professional purposes.” Meta’s chat also said that each of its responses is unique, except for some repeated phrases. “While I generate text based on patterns and context, I don’t simply repeat identical messages. Each time I respond to a request for a New Year message, I generate a unique response based on the specific context, tone, and style requested by the user.

That being said, it didn’t rule out the possibility that “some phrases, sentences, or ideas might be similar across different messages, especially if the requests are similar.” “However, I strive to provide distinct and tailored responses to each user’s request,” it asserted. ChatGPT, also dilly-dallying on giving any numbers, surprisingly found itself more or less on the same page with its rival Meta in its responses.

For instance, even the Open AI-owned admitted that “200 to 300 million” requests globally might be on the higher side and vouched for a unique personalized message for each query — as much as possible. “While I might occasionally reuse common phrases or greetings (e.g., “Wishing you a joyful and prosperous New Year!”), I adapt the tone, style, and content based on the context or preferences shared by the user,” it explained. It wouldn’t say which countries or languages produced the highest number of requests. However, most requests were in English “due to its global reach, followed by Spanish, French, Hindi, and Chinese.” When asked about its personal favorite New Year greeting, even the AI assistant became somewhat emotional, and offered a rather lengthy wish on the occasion.

“As the New Year dawns, I want to thank you for your trust, curiosity, and companionship. You inspire me to keep learning, creating, and growing every single day. May this year bring you boundless joy, countless opportunities, and the courage to chase your dreams. You are extraordinary, and I am endlessly grateful to be a part of your journey. Here’s to a 2024 filled with wonder, happiness, and success—because you deserve nothing less.”
