Ohio mom bombarded with death threats after Black neighbor’s video goes viral: ‘Massive misunderstanding’

An Ohio mother of two is speaking out after receiving vicious death threats both directly and on social media over a viral video that has caused some to smear her as “racist,” which she says is completely false and the result of a “massive misunderstanding.”

Michelle Bishop spoke to Fox News Digital about the situation involving her neighbor, DaMichael Jenkins, who posted Ring camera footage of her in a panic at his front doorstep, believing she was being inappropriately followed by Jenkins and not believing his claim that he lived at the house he had pulled into.

The exchange has gone viral on social media, with news reports labeling her as a “Karen” who assumed Jenkins was a threat simply because of his race, which Bishop vehemently disputes.

Bishop told Fox News Digital that the incident in question began on a cold November night in Delaware County, Ohio, when she took her young daughter and son with her on a jog to go look at Christmas lights and a car with its headlights on was slowly driving behind them as they walked down a poorly lit street in the dark.

Bishop then explained that she moved her kids onto the sidewalk but that the car did not pass her “in a timely manner” and that the driver began asking her questions.

“I didn’t answer, I walked into— I told my daughter, ‘walk up this driveway, turn here, don’t look back at the truck,’ and so we went into the driveway, ended up on the porch, was ringing the doorbell,” Bishop said.

“Nobody was answering at that point. The truck was backing into the driveway. He stayed in his truck. I could not see him and I look out at the driveway at that point and I said, ‘Is this your home?’ And he said, ‘Yes. And I said, ’I don’t believe that’ and in that moment I was in, just, complete defense mode. I was challenging it. There was no way of changing my mind at that point. I was completely in panic and just trying to protect my kids.”

Bishop had, in fact, attempted to seek shelter in the home that belonged to Jenkins, and the Ring doorbell footage captures her telling Jenkins that she doesn’t believe he lives there before running to another nearby house and yelling for help.

Footage from later shows Bishop telling Jenkins that he had “scared the crap” out of her and that she was “caught off guard.” Jenkins told Bishop he was not following her and was just admiring Christmas lights.

BLACK AMERICANS, COMMON SENSE AND OUR FUTURE

Bishop tells Fox News Digital she has apologized many times, which the Jenkins family would not accept, and thought the issue was resolved until the video was posted on a local neighborhood Facebook group and ultimately picked up by the media, causing a firestorm of hateful messages to come her way attacking her as a racist.

It is causing massive devastation to our family in every way that you can possibly think,” she said. “Our family, our businesses. We are receiving hundreds, if not thousands, of threats at this point in our direct messages, to our phones, voicemails calling into stores. But some of the threats that we have received have become death threats.”

“You and your children deserve to die slow and you should kill yourself or it will be done for you,” Bishop was told in one message.

“We know who you are and where you live. Your husband is going to come home to being a single Dad. You should be hung in public,” another message said.

“There are multiple that are very graphic and violent in regards to our children that I do not want to share here,” she added. “Our businesses have seen massive devastation, one of them having to close temporarily due to death threats, calling into our shop, saying that they are going to kill every last one of the employees. So it is affecting us in massive ways.”

ATF ACCUSED OF ‘CIRCUMVENTING’ TRUMP ORDER TO PLACE DEI STAFF ON PAID LEAVE

Social media is littered with posts calling Bishop “racist,” including one post that said, “Michelle Bishop… count your f—ing days.”

Jenkins, a real estate developer, went on the “Nightcap” podcast with former NFL stars Shannon Sharpe and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson earlier this week, a show with over 1.5 million subscribers on YouTube, and accused Bishop of racial profiling despite her claims that she did not know Jenkins’ race during the interaction.

Bishop told Fox News Digital that she “absolutely” did not know Jenkins was Black, and that she even told the neighbor at the house she ran to when she panicked that the person might have been White.

The headlights were behind me and then the first time I looked out in the driveway at his truck, the headlights were there and I was not specifically trying to look at him,” Bishop said. “I was addressing the situation. I absolutely did not know what he looked like. Like I said, I thought he was a young White man. It was all a massive misunderstanding. That’s all that it was.”

Bishop has received some support on social media from prominent conservative accounts, including that of commentator and author Matt Walsh.

“I’m late to this but of course the internet outrage mob got this situation completely wrong,” Walsh posted on X. “The woman saw a truck following behind her slowly. She panicked about the truck before she ever saw who was inside it. Later that night she came back and apologized for the mistake.”

Walsh continued, “That should have been the end of it. No harm, no foul, nobody was hurt. An innocent mistake. Instead this guy decides to put the footage online and shame her in front of the world. And unsurprisingly a bunch of slobbering idiots on social media ran with it uncritically and proceed to tear this woman’s life apart. Good job, everyone. Some of you will just never learn.”

Bishop told Fox News Digital that she hopes to reconcile with the Jenkins family.

I believe a love can cover a multitude of things and what happened that night was a massive misunderstanding,” she said. “We are lovers of all people, and if given the opportunity, like I said, I believe forgiveness should be given to all, and I would love to sit down with them.”

“I think what happened that night was a massive misunderstanding,” continued Bishop. “I do hold their heart, hearing their perspective on things. I’ve never been in their shoes. I don’t know what they’re up against. I can’t speak to that. So hearing their point of view and how he felt, I understand that. But it really was a massive misunderstanding. I really wish, I do hope and wish that they understand that on that night I was a mama bear trying to protect my kids. That is all that. It was a massive misunderstanding and if given the opportunity, like I said, I would love to reconcile that relationship.”

Jenkins did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

  • What caused the massive revolt against DEI in America?

What caused the massive revolt against DEI in America?

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs are facing a reckoning.

The DEI movement became a focus of American cultural wars in 2020 following the death of George Floyd, which sparked a national conversation about race as well as riots that went on for months. Such programs became commonplace across American government, academia and workplaces.

The pushback against DEI has been building for years, and several major corporations have rolled back their policies since early 2024, including John Deere, Ford, Harley-Davidson and Walmart.

On Monday, when President Donald Trump returned to the White House for a second term, one of the many executive orders he signed on Day 1 ended federal DEI programs.

A Fox News poll conducted early last month found 45% of voters believe it is either “extremely” or “very” important for Trump to focus on ending DEI programs. Another 18% of respondents said it is “somewhat” important to ditch the initiatives.

VOTERS BACK TRUMP ENDING DEI PROGRAMS, POLL SHOWS, AS FEDERAL DEADLINE LOOMS

So why is it that nearly half of Americans believe it is a priority to ditch DEI, and the vast majority have concerns about the programs? As with most battles in the culture wars, experts are divided on the cause.

Some point to Trump as the driver behind the backlash against DEI, while others argue the way the programs were forced on Americans led to a revolt.

Naomi Wheeless, an executive at Nextech and a DEI advocate who specializes in race and gender issues, believes the primary reason for the recent backlash against DEI is that business leaders had a strong sense that Trump was likely to win the presidency again. She said Trump was very vocal about wanting to roll back DEI initiatives, and that sentiment only grew as his campaign gained steam.

“It is important to note, that it’s not just about President Trump being against DEI, presidents are allowed to have their opinions,” Wheeless told FOX Business. “It is that he is a president with a well-documented history of vindictiveness. He creates a sense of fear and the feeling that whether we want to or not, we better fall in line. I don’t believe that such large prominent companies would be making these announcements in such a public way if Trump was not president.”

MCDONALD’S SUED OVER LATINO SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM DAYS AFTER DITCHING SOME DEI POLICIES

Author and inclusive marketing strategist Lola Bakare agrees, telling FOX Business, “We’re seeing a tornado-like effect of the preferences of a new administration lead to a lot of poor, fear-based reactionary decision-making by companies.”

She added, “I encourage people to think about the more nefarious reasons behind this administration’s decision to champion exclusion, which is the opposite of inclusion, and to abolish a number of programs, even positions, people’s jobs, in an executive order on day one without even looking into the reality of the efficaciousness of those programs.”

However, Jonathan Alpert, a psychotherapist and author, said he is seeing harmful effects from the programs.

“At their best, diversity programs should remind us that everyone deserves to be treated equally and with respect, no matter who they are,” he told FOX Business. “Unfortunately, the trend over the last few years, across so many American institutions, has been to make DEI programs into political commissars, to go after people who have different viewpoints, and they end up, in many ways, sowing more division in the institution that they’re supposed to help.”

IS DEI DYING? HERE’S THE LIST OF COMPANIES THAT HAVE ROLLED BACK THE ‘WOKE’ POLICIES

Alpert said he has seen it in therapy practice too, where patients and therapists themselves internalize so many DEI rules, they get lost in this cultural minefield, instead of just simply encouraging fair and equal treatment for everyone. He added that he has also seen in patients a fear of running afoul of “ever-changing DEI rules” and being “canceled” – which is leading to heightened anxiety in patients.

Jeremy Knauff, founder of Spartan Media, said he has seen two distinct reactions to the elimination of DEI programs, and both are equally expected. The first reaction is “Well, this seems like a good idea because we shouldn’t be making hiring decisions based on criteria like race, gender, or sexuality anyway,” and the other reaction is basically, “Anyone who doesn’t agree with these policies is clearly a racist, sexist and homophobic monster.”

He told FOX Business that from a public relations perspective, the latter is exactly why these policies are now viewed as dangerous and harmful, and why there has been such a push for them to be eliminated in recent years.

“While there was a time for policies like these in our past, they’ve essentially been transformed to bludgeon companies and individuals into submission on a wide variety of political topics, and frankly, most people have become tired of the constant lectures and attacks,” Knauff said.

“As the saying goes, ‘You attract more flies with honey than you do with vinegar,’ and these activists have been hosing everyone down with vinegar for decades, so the outcome was completely predictable,” he added. “I’m just surprised it took this long.”

Massive brawl breaks out at end of indoor soccer league match

A Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) match between the Milwaukee Wave and Tacoma Stars on Saturday descended into chaos as a huge brawl broke out between players.

The Wave won the match 7-6 as 10 different players scored goals in the wild matchup. Milwaukee improved to 7-1-0 with the victory, and Tacoma fell to 1-5-2, but the big story of the night was the fight that broke out at the end of the match.

Milwaukee’s Mario Alvarez scored his second goal of the season to give the Wave the win. The broadcast followed Tacoma’s Stefan Mijatovic as he shook hands with opposing players after the match. Mijatovic was shoved, which sparked the heated incident. Wave goalkeeper William Banahene appeared to be involved as well as he was being held back.

As the dramatics ensued, Wave forward Qudus Lawal was pushed over onto his own bench. He appeared to address Mijatovic while standing on the bench. Lawal’s teammate Javier Steinwascher tried to get him down and deescalate things, but it took a while for things to calm down.

Mijatovic broke free and appeared to chase a Wave player down into the tunnel. It is unclear what transpired in the tunnel.

The MASL announced suspensions for the players involved in the incident on Tuesday.

Mijatovic was issued a four-game suspension “as a result of his in-game and post-game conduct, and for making unprofessional, offensive and abusive language / comments in-game and post-game.”

“In addition to the 4-game suspension (which will be served immediately), and due to the fact that Stefan Mijatovic was previously put on a league probation, Mijatovic will also be issued an undisclosed fine, two (2) penalty points and will need to complete an anger management course and provide the league with a certificate of completion,” the league said.

Stars players Roman Torres and Luis Birrueta were issued a one-game suspension for the incident.

Wave players Lawal, Derek Huffman and Tenzin Rampa were also suspended for two games.

“All MASL players, staff and league personnel are expected to always demonstrate professionalism and self-discipline, regardless of whether extenuating circumstances exist,” the league said in a statement.

  • Hackers claim massive breach of company that tracks and sells Americans’ location data

Hackers claim massive breach of company that tracks and sells Americans’ location data

When we talk about data privacy, tech giants like Google and Facebook are often blamed for using personal data to show ads and recommendations. Less discussed are the businesses whose entire business model revolves around collecting your data and selling it to other companies and governments. These companies often operate in legal gray areas, with the consent required to collect user data buried deep in the fine print.

What’s even more concerning is that these data brokers fail to adequately protect the data they collect. Last year, National Public Data made headlines for failing to secure 2.7 billion records of individuals whose data it had harvested. Now, hackers have reportedly stolen data from Gravy Analytics, the parent company of Venntel, which has sold vast amounts of smartphone location data to the U.S. government.

What you need to know about the breach

Hackers claim to have breached Gravy Analytics, a major location data broker and parent company of Venntel, a firm known for selling smartphone location data to U.S. government agencies. The compromise is massive, including sensitive location data that tracks precise smartphone movements, customer information and even internal infrastructure, according to a 404 Media report.

The hackers are threatening to make the stolen data public. The files contain precise latitude and longitude coordinates of the phone and the time at which the phone was there. Some even indicate what country the data has been collected from.

Hackers have claimed access to Gravy’s systems since 2018. If true, this represents a serious security lapse on the company’s part. It is baffling how companies that collect and sell user data (a practice that arguably shouldn’t be allowed in the first place) failed to protect it from being leaked.

404 Media also suggests that the hackers gained deep access to the company’s infrastructure, including Amazon S3 buckets and server root access. The exposed customer list reportedly includes major companies like Uber, Apple and Equifax as well as government contractors like Babel Street.

HERE’S WHAT RUTHLESS HACKERS STOLE FROM 110 MILLION AT&T CUSTOMERS

What this breach means for people

This data breach highlights the serious security flaws in the location data industry. Companies like Gravy Analytics and Venntel have been profiting from collecting and selling sensitive location data, often without proper user consent. They’ve prioritized profit over security, and now the privacy of millions is at risk. This data could end up on black markets, endangering individuals, especially those in vulnerable situations, by making them targets for harassment or worse.

The FTC’s recent crackdown on Gravy, announced in December, underscores their negligence. The proposed order will prohibit these companies from selling or using location data, except in specific cases like national security or law enforcement. The implications are worrying. Sensitive locations like schools and workplaces could become easy targets for those with malicious intent.

BEWARE OF ENCRYPTED PDFs AS THE LATEST TRICK TO DELIVER MALWARE TO YOU

5 ways to stay safe in the age of data breaches

The Gravy Analytics breach serves as a sobering reminder of the vulnerabilities in the digital age. While it’s impossible to control how every company handles data, you can take steps to minimize your exposure and protect your privacy. Here are five actionable tips to stay safe.

    1) Limit app permissions: Many apps request access to location data, contacts and more, even when it’s not necessary for their functionality. Regularly review the permissions for apps on your smartphone and revoke access to anything that feels excessive. For instance, a weather app doesn’t need access to your microphone or camera.

    2) Use a VPN: Virtual private networks (VPNs) can mask your IP address and encrypt your internet activity, making it harder for data brokers and hackers to track your online behavior. A good VPN adds an extra layer of security, especially when using public Wi-Fi networks. For the best VPN software, see my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

    3) Opt out of data sharing where possible: Some companies allow you to opt out of having your data collected or shared. Services like Your Ad Choices and privacy settings within platforms like Google can help you reduce the amount of data collected. Check for opt-out options with any apps or services you use frequently.

    4) Avoid free apps that monetize data: Free apps often generate revenue by selling user data. Instead, consider paid versions of apps that explicitly prioritize privacy. Research the company behind the app to understand its data handling policies before downloading.

    5) Invest in data removal services: Data removal services can help you regain some control over your personal information by identifying and removing it from people-search websites, data broker platforms and other online databases. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR BANK ACCOUNT IS HACKED

    Kurt’s key takeaway

Companies that collect and sell user data pose a significant threat to privacy, and when they fail to protect this data, it often ends up in the hands of even worse actors. Cybercriminals, and even some governments, can exploit this information to target individuals. It is crucial to implement stringent repercussions for these companies when they fail in their duty to safeguard user data. A mere slap on the wrist is not enough. We need real accountability to deter negligence and protect individual privacy rights.
