Expert reveals massive levels of waste DOGE can slash from entitlements, pet projects: ‘A lot of fat’

As Democrats blast Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) efforts as a “constitutional crisis,” Fox News Digital spoke to a government spending expert who explained that many departments, including entitlements, are ripe with fat that can and should be cut.

James Agresti, president of the nonprofit research institute Just Facts, spoke to Fox News Digital about some of the opportunities to make cuts to entitlements and pointed to $2 billion worth of improper payments at the Social Security Administration (SSA) in 2022, which was enough to pay 89,947 retired workers in 2023.

“It’s hard to wrap your head around a figure like that,” Agresti said. “There’s a lot of fat in Social Security, as there are in almost all entitlement programs.”

The SSA sent roughly 7,000 federal employees disability benefits in 2008 while they were still taking wages from federal jobs, according to a 2010 report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

The GAO estimated that about 1,500 of those individuals “may have improperly received benefits” since their wages went beyond maximum income thresholds. The GAO investigation also found that over 71,000 “stimulus checks” were sent by the Obama administration to people who were deceased, including 63,481 people whose deaths had been previously reported to the agency.

President Donald Trump and Musk have signaled concerns about illegal immigrants with Social Security numbers contributing to fraud at SSA, which Agresti said are concerns backed up by facts.

In 2010, the chief actuary of the Social Security Administration did a study of this problem, and it found that there were 800,000 noncitizens who had Social Security numbers and were working under them, which means they can receive benefits on them, and they obtain those Social Security numbers by submitting false birth certificates to the Social Security Administration,” Agresti said.

Agresti explained that there are similar problems at the Internal Revenue Service “where they’re doling out child tax credits for the children of illegal immigrants, and they are basically accepting anything that’s thrown at them.”

There was an investigation back several years ago where the same birth certificate was issued, it was given to them in numerous cases to get these child tax credits, and they just gave it to them,” Agresti said. “There was absolutely no accountability. In fact, the order from management was just get it done, get it off your desk. Don’t worry about investigating whether or not it’s legit and this is quite frankly, it’s theft.”

“It’s stealing from the US taxpayers, it’s stealing from the government. And certain people have just come to tolerate it. And quite frankly, I just think that’s ridiculous. We would never tolerate this in our regular life. Somebody ripping us off for 10, 20% of our income.”

Agresti told Fox News Digital that Social Security is “actually one of the better ones” when compared to other entitlements like Medicare and Medicaid, where the improper payments are “astronomical” andsometimes five, 10, 15%, 20% with the Children’s Health Insurance Program.”

Speaking about the IRS, Agresti said it has essentially become a “welfare program” with the introduction of congressional laws that issue refundable tax credits” and said there are “massively” high improper payments in the agency, particularly with the earned income tax credit and child tax credit.

Democrats have been vocally railing against Trump and Musk’s DOGE efforts, particularly when it comes to entitlement programs, where they argue that the administration is attempting to strip legitimate earned benefits owed to taxpayers.

Agresti told Fox News Digital that “nothing could be further from the truth” and when it comes to social security, DOGE is “trying to make sure that your Social Security check is there and not lost to fraud.”

I think we’re seeing one big obstacle right now, the Democratic Party, which is going after it and demonizing Trump and Musk for making a good faith effort to fix this kind of problem, and I don’t see the reason for it,” Agresti said. “I don’t see the motivation for it. But it’s ridiculous that they’re misconstruing what they’re doing.”

The federal government is a behemoth, and it’s got a lot of tentacles. A lot of employees and governments are infamous for having very low accountability for their employees. It’s just the way it’s always been.”

Ford CEO says tariffs bringing ‘a lot of cost and a lot of chaos’

Ford CEO Jim Farley said Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s tariff push has so far brought “a lot of cost and a lot of chaos” to the auto industry despite the president’s aims to help the industry.

“President Trump has talked a lot about making our U.S. auto industry stronger, bringing more production here, more innovation to the U.S., and if this administration can achieve that, it would be one of the most signature accomplishments,” Farley said at an analyst conference in Detroit.

“So far, what we’re seeing is a lot of cost and a lot of chaos,” he added.

Farley also said that if Trump’s 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada are implemented and remain in effect for the long term, it would “blow a hole” in the U.S. auto industry, with rivals from Asia and Europe poised to benefit.

“Let’s be real honest: Long term, a 25% tariff across Mexico and Canada borders would blow a hole in the U.S. industry that we have never seen,” Farley said. “Frankly, it gives free rein to South Korean, Japanese and European companies that are bringing 1.5 million to 2 million vehicles into the U.S. that wouldn’t be subject to those Mexican and Canadian tariffs. It would be one of the biggest windfalls for those companies ever.”

“Meanwhile, we’re USMCA-compliant with almost all of our content, finished vehicles and components going across the borders. To have the kind of a size of tariff would be devastating,” Farley said.

FORD EXECUTIVE BELIEVES TRUMP AND MUSK WANT TO ‘STRENGTHEN’ THE AMERICAN AUTO INDUSTRY

The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker is less exposed to fallout from tariffs on Canada and Mexico than its crosstown rival General Motors or Stellantis, the parent company of brands such as Jeep and Dodge, analysts said.

That’s because more of Ford’s manufacturing base is located within the U.S. and the vehicles that it does import from outside the country tend to be less profit-rich than the products its rivals import.

Ford is considering areas in which it can build up inventory to prepare for potential 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, executives said Tuesday.

Those tariffs were planned to take effect in early February, but Trump delayed them until at least March after Canada and Mexico announced border security measures.

Trump’s announcement of tariffs on steel and aluminum that are scheduled to take effect next month was discussed with Ford executives noting the company gets 90% of its steel from the U.S. and about 10% from Canada, while the company’s aluminum is also primarily sourced domestically.

The birthday could be that must better with a ring, but there are more accolades the star player could achieve should he continue his dominant year. He’s 30 yards shy of breaking the NFL season rushing record with postseason numbers included. Barkley is short of Terrell Davis’ mark of 2,476 yards set in 1998 with the Denver Broncos.

Barkley made clear that everything about getting to the Super Bowl is nice, but the goal was to win the game.

“The dream was to win the Super Bowl, and I think we’re capable of doing it.”

Barkley was awarded the 2024 Offensive Player of the Year award because of his incredible first season in Philadelphia. He had 2,005 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns in 16 games.

  • Cooper Manning jokes hospital named after his family saw a lot of his son, Texas star QB Arch Manning

Cooper Manning jokes hospital named after his family saw a lot of his son, Texas star QB Arch Manning

The Manning family is a staple in New Orleans since the patriarch, Archie, was drafted 54 years ago by the Saints to be their quarterback.

The family’s accomplishments on the field, which includes their three sons — Cooper, Peyton and Eli — are widely known, but they’re also active in the community.

During the Louisiana Legacy Gala Wednesday night, it was announced that Children’s Hospital New Orleans would be renamed Manning Family Children’s in tribute to the family’s longstanding commitment to serving children in the community.

One of the main pillars of the hospital is never turning a child away, and it treated 585,000 children last year. During a press conference after the announcement, Cooper Manning explained how great the hospital is because his son, Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning, needed some treatment in the past.

“I can tell you Arch spent a lot of time at Children’s Hospital, and I was there taking him to get stitches. And we’ve spent a lot of time here,” Cooper said, jokingly. “Children’s Hospital is right down the street from us, and Arch is sad he couldn’t be here tonight.

“It’s a special spot, and my other son, Heid, we grew up practicing on that field and seeing the helicopter come in and all the kids taking a knee when they see the helicopter landing and going out with someone young.

“It’s part of the fabric of our youth growing up in New Orleans, and this is an unbelievable facility. We’re just flattered to be a part of it.”

The Louisiana Legacy event celebrated Archie and Olivia Manning with the inaugural Louisiana Legacy Award for their commitment to the well-being of children and their families across the state and the country.

New Orleans-born and Baton Rouge-raised Todd Graves, the founder of Raising Cane’s, donated $1 million to Walker’s Imaginarium, which will be a first-of-its-kind interactive children’s museum within the hospital that’s named after Walker Beery, who fought terminal brain cancer before his death.

Graves called Archie Manning his idol and someone he always wanted to emulate in the community and spoke about the hospital’s mission.

“They gave great care for 600,000 kids this year, and they don’t stop at that,” he said. “They keep building every year, taking care of more and more children regardless of whether you can afford it or not. For us, and for me living here in the states and one day, God willing, I’m going to have grandkids and great-grandkids, having this world-class care in our backyard is invaluable.”

Archie added, “I can speak on behalf of my entire family. It’s very hard to put into words. To have a hospital named after you, this is not like making second-team All-SEC or anything like that. We just have such admiration for this hospital and the people and the leadership. For them to do this for our family, it’s one of the greatest things that’s happened in my life.”

Archie said the hospital honor beats all the football accomplishments.

“I think it was in 2007, we dedicated Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. And, in 2009, I think it was, we dedicated Eli Manning Children’s Clinics in Jackson, Miss. After both of those events, I told my sons that this is your finest hour, and I meant that. Football, in Peyton’s case, they’d just won a Super Bowl, and then Eli. I said, ‘What’s going on here is your finest hour.’

“Without a doubt, I can say this happening tonight and renaming this hospital is our family’s finest hour, and we’re very appreciative.”
