LeBron James takes heat for late decision to skip NBA All-Star Game

LeBron James drew some blowback on Sunday night as he announced 90 minutes before the NBA All-Star Game was set for tip-off that he would forgo playing in it over a foot issue.

The Los Angeles Lakers star said he would miss the mini tournament with foot and ankle discomfort. It ended his streak of 20 consecutive All-Star Game appearances. TNT hosts appeared to be appalled by the late decision from James.

“I think ‘Bron coulda helped somebody else out and said this earlier,” Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green said, via Awful Announcing.

Former NBA star Jalen Rose added that James “took a roster spot from somebody.”

It was the first time James had missed an All-Star Game since 2004. He was set to play for Team Shaquille O’Neal in the All-Star Game’s new competition format. The team was then down to seven players – Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard and James Harden.

“I was hoping that it would feel a lot better this morning, but it’s not where I want it to be,” James said. “And with 30 games left and with us trying to make a playoff push in the wild, wild, West, I feel like it’s very important for me to kind of take care of myself and understand what’s coming on.

“So, I won’t say it’s maintenance, but it is maintenance,” he said. “At the same time, I have to look out for myself when it comes to this to this injury I’ve been dealing with for years.”

James said he will resume rehabbing the injury on Monday and hoped to play on Wednesday as the Lakers return from the break to compete against the Charlotte Hornets.

As Tiger Woods continues to mourn the loss of his mother, Kultida Woods, Genesis Invitational organizers have revealed plans to honor her.

The par-4 seventh hole will feature a white flag free of logos and wording in a nod to Wood’s late mother and her faith.

According to a social media post from the PGA Tour, Kultida Woods practiced Buddhism. The color white and the No. 7 are held in high regard by Buddhists.

  • Chiefs’ DeAndre Hopkins arrives at Super Bowl LIX wearing late father’s coat

Chiefs’ DeAndre Hopkins arrives at Super Bowl LIX wearing late father’s coat

A few months ago, the Tennessee Titans sent DeAndre Hopkins to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a conditional draft pick. Hopkins experienced his fair share of ups and downs in less than two full seasons in Tennesee.

But this Sunday, Hopkins will play in the Super Bowl for the first time in his career. Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles players and coaches began arriving at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon as the highly anticipated kickoff drew near.

Hopkins arrival featured arguably the best pregame outfit. The star wide receiver walked toward the Kansas City locker room wearing a fur coat, which was once owned by his late father.

Hopkins’ dad died in a car accident in 1992, according to ESPN. The future NFL star was just 5 months old at the time. The coat was passed on to Hopkins after his father’s death.

ESPN also noted that Hopkins made a vow to himself that he would wear the treasure coat on the same day of his wedding ceremony or the day of the Super Bowl, whichever event happened first.

Hopkins is not currently married, but the Chiefs are playing in a third consecutive Super Bowl, which gave the star receiver a reason to pull the coat from the closet.

Sunday’s big game also marks the ninth time Hopkins will compete in a postseason game. He has recorded 38 catches for 457 receiving yards over those eight previous games. Hopkins is also credited with one receiving touchdown.

Hopkins has not been featured much in this year’s playoffs so far. The five-time Pro Bowler has one catch for 11 yards heading into Super Bowl LIX. He finished the regular season with 437 yards and hauled in four touchdowns over his 10 games with the Chiefs.

  • Mother of late NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, brother Matthew says sons are ‘happy fans in heaven’ after Eagles win

Mother of late NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, brother Matthew says sons are ‘happy fans in heaven’ after Eagles win

The Philadelphia Eagles heading to Super Bowl LIX had Jane Gaudreau, the mother of late NHL star Johnny Gaudreau, and his brother Matthew, thinking about her two sons on Sunday night.

Hockey may be the Gaudreau family’s top sport, but being from South New Jersey, the Eagles are just as prominent.

Jane shared a picture on her social media accounts of her two sons wearing custom Gaudreau Eagles jerseys after the 55-23 win over the Washington Commanders sent Philadelphia back to the “Big Game.”

“I know two incredibly happy fans in heaven,” Jane wrote on Instagram. “GO BIRDS!!!!!! Going to the Super Bowl for the boys!!! One more win.”

Jane also shared the picture on X, adding “Miss and love you boys!” with two green hearts for the Eagles’ main jersey color.

Before the Eagles’ 2024 regular season began, tragedy struck the Gaudreau family and the entire hockey world as Johnny and Matthew were killed by a drunk driver in Oldmans Township, New Jersey — the day before their sister’s wedding. The Gaudreau brothers were riding bikes when Sean M. Higgins fatally struck them with his vehicle.

Earlier this month, Higgins turned down the prosecution’s offer of 35 years in prison, pleading not guilty to his charges stemming from the incident.

Higgins, 44, was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated manslaughter, two counts of vehicular homicide, evidence tampering and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police noted that Higgins had a blood alcohol level of .087, above New Jersey’s legal limit to drive, and he failed a field sobriety test. Police also said Higgins was driving aggressively, which included speeding up to drive around multiple vehicles, when he hit the Gaudreaus.

The Gaudreau family was in the courtroom to witness Higgins’ hearing, and two days after, Jane posted quotes on her Instagram seemingly about what her and her family are going through.

“Sometimes life is hard,” the first quote read. “Some days are very rough, and sometimes you just have to cry before you can move forward…And that’s okay.”

“When you have a bad day – a really bad day – try and treat the world better than it treated you,” the second quote, which is from Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump, read.

It’s not yet been determined when Higgins is due next in court, though a trial is upcoming.
