The Maha Kumbh Mela, or Great Pitcher Festival, is drawing hundreds of millions of pilgrims and tourists to India. The 45-day festival, which began Jan. 13, is the largest gathering of humanity in the world. It is expected to draw approximately 420 million.

That is about 200 times the number of Muslim pilgrims who participated in the annual Hajj in Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia, last year. It is so large it can be seen from outer space.

According to Hindu scriptures, gods and demons once churned the cosmic ocean in search of the nectar of immortality. During this struggle, drops of nectar fell at four sacred sites. The spiritual Hindu festival takes place once every 12 years at one of those four locations.

This year, it is being held in the city of Prayagraj in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This year’s event is considered particularly special because it aligns with a rare, once-in-a-century celestial configuration.

WORLD’S LARGEST RELIGIOUS GATHERING BEGINS IN INDIA, HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF HINDUS EXPECTED TO ATTEND

Throngs of devotees have been descending on northern India to take a dip at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers. Hindus, who account for nearly 80% of India’s more than 1.4 billion people, believe a third invisible river, the mythical Saraswati, also meets at the confluence.

Legend holds that a dip in the holy waters will cleanse them of sins and grant salvation. Bathing occurs daily, but on the most auspicious dates, Naga Sadhus, Hindu ascetics, head into the holy rivers at dawn.

Ava Poonawala, a resident of Mumbai, India, made the journey not as a pilgrim, but to “witness the world’s largest religious event in our lifetime,” she explained to Fox News Digital. She took an early 6 a.m. dip just as the sun was rising.

After her chilly dip, she expressed feeling invigorated and at peace.

“Everyone seemed to be there with one purpose,” she told Fox News Digital. “And that was spiritual awakening.”

The Maha Kumbh Mela is a massive undertaking by any standard. To accommodate the tens of thousands of holy men, pilgrims and tourists, authorities have built a sprawling tent city on the riverbanks. It’s equipped with more than 150,000 tents and toilets, 3,000 kitchens and 11 hospitals, as well as roads, electricity, water and communication towers.

It covers some 15 square miles. About 50,000 security personnel, supported by artificial intelligence-powered cameras, are stationed in the city to maintain law and order and manage the crowds.

“I was blown away by the incredible magnitude of this event,” Poonawala told Fox News Digital. “It’s just unimaginable how they put this all together.”

STAMPEDE THAT KILLED 121 IN INDIA WAS CAUSED BY SEVERE OVERCROWDING AND LACK OF EXITS, AUTHORITIES SAY

A predawn stampede broke out at the festival last week, reportedly killing roughly three dozen people and injuring many more. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences to “devotees who have lost their loved ones” without specifying the number dead.

Police reported the stampede occurred as hundreds of millions of pilgrims rushed to dip in sacred waters on the most auspicious day of the festival. Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister said some devotees attempted to jump crowd management barricades, triggering the crush. The Kumbh’s grand processions, which had been curtailed last week, have since resumed.

Prior to the stampede, the festival saw a brief but large fire, which was quickly extinguished.

AT LEAST 30 DEAD IN STAMPEDE AT THE MASSIVE MAHA KUMBH FESTIVAL IN INDIA, POLICE SAY

For many, the marvel of the Maha Kumbh Mela lies neither in the religious nor spiritual experience, but rather the cultural extravaganza. It not only brings together ash-smeared monks, naked ascetics and priests dressed head-to-toe in saffron. It also attracts tourists with selfie sticks and awed foreigners.

Uttar Pradesh has gone to great lengths to promote this year’s festival as a tourist event, offering luxury packages and experiences. The government even organized helicopters to shower flower petals on the saints and seers taking a holy dip. The state has allocated more than $765 million for this year’s event.

The Kumbh has drawn people from all strata of society, whether it be billionaires like Laurene Powell Jobs, the wife of the late Steve Jobs, or athletes like Olympic boxer Mary Kom. Bollywood stars and celebrities like Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and his fiancée, actress Dakota Johnson, have descended on the festival.

Even royalty, like King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan, have made an appearance. On Wednesday, exactly a week after the stampede, Prime Minister Modi arrived in Prayagraj to take a sacred dip.

The Kumbh Mela’s popularity has steadily increased in size over the years as improved infrastructure and facilities have attracted more people. This year, for the first time ever, the massive event also boasts being plastic-free and eco-friendly. The festival is a significant test for India to showcase Hinduism and culture, as well as handle tourism and crowd management.

“The ground was buzzing at all hours, right through the night into the morning,” Poonawala said. “It was so surreal with such purity. I can’t even begin to explain it.”

Largest LAPD union slams anti-Trump protest directives, says arrests ‘should be a no-brainer’ in altercations

FIRST ON FOX: After several Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers were injured by rioters during anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles on Sunday and Monday, the department’s largest union representing most rank-and-file officers hopes the “communication break-down” will be investigated.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, the Los Angeles Police Protective League said “the arrest of individuals that are attacking police officers should be a no-brainer for any competent incident commander.”

“Apparently, that did not happen yesterday,” they said.

“When those committing violence against anyone, let alone police officers, are allowed to masquerade as peaceful protesters, it sends the wrong message and crushes officer morale,” the board said. “We hope this incident is investigated with the same vigor as past crowd control incidents were investigated and those that allowed officers to be attacked are held accountable.”

Thousands of demonstrators protesting Trump’s mass deportation program descended upon the streets of L.A. on Sunday and Monday, including clogging the 101 Freeway – one of the city’s busiest roadways – as hundreds were detained amid scuffles, but later released.

Several altercations between officers and protesters took place, as some hurled objects at police who were equipped with non-lethal weapons and riot gear.

While no arrests were made on Monday, LAPD Chief of Police Jim McDonnell said no stand-down order was given.

“The LAPD closely monitored the situation and the Incident Commander made decisions that prioritized public and officer safety,” McDonnell said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital.

Meanwhile, the incident commander on sight on Monday, Lillian Carranza, told Fox News Digital that “the minute officers were attacked it became an unlawful assembly.” Carranza did not clarify whether she gave an order for officers to not make arrests.

“We are all for supporting the peaceful exercise of freedom of speech and assembly not when it turns violent,” she said.

Part of the LAPD’s “control objectives,” as shared by Carranza, includes establishing “a visible, crowd-friendly law enforcement posture” and a “safe and secure arrival, and departure of participants when able.” Protecting life, property and facilities, as well as taking action “regarding law violators,” were also on the list.

“We don’t dispute that the Chief didn’t give a stand down order, it was the misguided incident commander that did, and we believe it put officers in danger,” the LAPPL board’s statement read in part. “The investigation of this incident should focus on where the communication break-down occurred and what needs to happen going forward to keep peaceful protesters and officers safe while also holding violent individuals accountable.”

A source familiar with the incident also told Fox News Digital that multiple LAPD officers were “very frustrated” by Monday’s directive and detailed confusion in the field.

Many of the protesters over the last two days could be seen carrying signs, waving Mexican and Central American flags and speaking out against Trump’s immigration policies.

“No human is illegal on stolen land,” one sign read.

Another one read, “Fight ignorance, not immigrants.”

Videos shared on social media show what appeared to be demonstrators spraying graffiti on the freeway walls and vandalizing at least one car that was stopped in the middle of the crowd.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested more than 7,400 illegal immigrants nationwide in nine days amid its aggressive crackdown propelled by the new Trump administration. The agency also said it has placed nearly 6,000 ICE detainers.

‘America First’: Largest steel producer in US announces support of Trump tariffs

FIRST ON FOX: The CEO of the largest steel producer in the U.S., Nucor Corp., endorsed President Donald Trump’s tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico, Fox News Digital learned.

“Nucor applauds the first steps taken by President Trump in his America First Trade Agenda,” Leon J. Topalian, the chair, president and CEO Nucor Corp., wrote in a statement dated Friday that was obtained by Fox News Digital. “We look forward to working with President Trump to enforce our trade laws and strengthen American manufacturing!”

The subject line of the letter reads, “Presidential Executive Orders on Canada, Mexico, and the People’s Republic of China.”

Nucor is based out of North Carolina and serves as the nation’s largest steel producer and scrap metal recycler.

TRUMP DEFENDS TARIFFS, ACCUSES CANADA OF BEING ‘VERY ABUSIVE OF THE UNITED STATES’: VIDEO

The company’s CEO recently joined CNBC’s Jim Cramer and celebrated Trump’s then-upcoming tariffs as tools to end “currency manipulation” and the “subsidization” of steel coming to the U.S. from abroad.

“We saw the memo last Monday on tariffs and what they’re going to do,” Topalian said Tuesday. “And I think they’re going to be far-reaching, and I think they’re going to be very broad to, again, stop the illegal dumping, the manipulation, currency manipulation and subsidization of steels coming into the shores of the U.S.”

“We’re the largest steel company in North America, so, of course, we took a look a year and a half ago and, and, we’ll continue to look and see if those assets come back,” he said. “But, part of the reason we didn’t move forward is valuation. We’re not going to overpay for assets.”

NUCOR ONCE THWARTED A CHINESE ATTEMPT TO STEAL ITS TECHNOLOGY

Trump signed an executive order on Saturday authorizing tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China through the new International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The tariffs take effect on Tuesday and include 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on imports from China. Energy resources from Canada will have a lower 10% tariff.

The tariffs were created in light of “extraordinary” threats stemming from “illegal aliens and drugs, including deadly fentanyl,” according to the order.

NUCOR CEO ON TARIFFS: WE’VE BEEN IN A TRADE WAR FOR 30 YEARS

“This challenge threatens the fabric of our society,” the executive order states. “Gang members, smugglers, human traffickers, and illicit drugs of all kinds have poured across our borders and into our communities.

“Canada has played a central role in these challenges, including by failing to devote sufficient attention and resources or meaningfully coordinate with United States law enforcement partners to effectively stem the tide of illicit drugs.”

Foreign leaders have railed against the tariffs. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Saturday that her country “categorically reject[s] the White House’s slander against the Mexican government of having alliances with criminal organizations, as well as any intention of intervention in our territory.”

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau encouraged residents to “buy Canada” by checking labels at stores to ensure a product is made in the Great White North.

TRUMP SAYS CANADA WOULD HAVE NO TARIFFS AS 51ST STATE, AS OBSERVERS BRACE FOR TRADE WAR

Trump defended the tariffs Sunday evening while talking to reporters gathered at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

“Canada has been very abusive of the United States for many years. They don’t allow our banks,” Trump said. “And you know that Canada does not allow banks to go in, if you think about it. That’s pretty amazing. If we have a U.S. bank, they don’t allow them to go in.”

“Canada has been very tough for oil on energy. They don’t allow our farm products in, essentially. They don’t allow a lot of things in. And we allow everything to come in as being a one-way street.”

Car insurance prices soared in 2024 — these states saw the largest spikes

Auto insurance rates have been soaring for years, and 2024 was no different.

Insurify reported this week that the price of car insurance premiums climbed 15% last year, with American drivers now shelling out an average of $2,313 annually for full coverage.

Here’s where drivers paid the most for full coverage in 2024:

“Maryland’s auto insurance rates tend to be influenced by its large population centers, such as Baltimore, and its proximity to Washington, D.C.,” Insurify VP of Carrier Management and Operations Betsy Stella told FOX Business. “With urban areas often experiencing higher claim frequencies due to congestion and traffic-related incidents, insurers in the state adjust their rates accordingly to reflect the increased risk.”

WILL HURRICANES AND WILDFIRES CAUSE INSURANCE PRICES TO RISE NATIONWIDE?

    New York – $3,804, up 53%

“New York has seen slower regulatory approval for rate increases, which has made it more challenging for insurers to keep pace with rising loss costs,” Stella explained. “As a result, the state’s rate adjustments are more heavily influenced by inflationary pressures that have impacted the insurance industry in recent years, rather than immediate changes in claims frequency.”

    District of Columbia – $3,399, up 24%

“Similar to Maryland, Washington, D.C.’s urban setting contributes to higher auto insurance rates due to the frequency of claims in densely populated areas,” said Stella. “Insurers must account for the increased risk of traffic-related accidents in this region, which leads to adjustments in premiums for local drivers.”

CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES: DOES YOUR CAR INSURANCE PROTECT YOU FROM FIRE DAMAGE?

    South Carolina – $3,393, up 29%

Stella said that in South Carolina, the most significant factors driving auto insurance rate increases are inflationary pressures and rising repair costs.

“As the cost of parts and labor continues to climb, insurers must adjust their rates to maintain profitability while ensuring adequate coverage for policyholders,” she said.

    Florida – $3,166, up 9%

“Florida’s auto insurance market is affected by several factors, including a growing population and a higher frequency of severe claims,” Stella noted, adding that inflationary pressures, along with the increasing costs of repairs, have further pushed rates upward in the state.

“Additionally,” she said, “the state’s vulnerability to weather events—such as hurricanes—also plays a role in the rising cost of auto insurance.”

  • UnitedHealth cyberattack exposes 190 million in largest US healthcare data breach

UnitedHealth cyberattack exposes 190 million in largest US healthcare data breach

UnitedHealth’s Change Healthcare unit suffered a data breach in February 2024, the news of which surfaced Feb. 21.

Initially reported to have affected around 100 million individuals, the U.S. health insurance giant has now revealed that the actual number is significantly higher: 190 million. This makes it the largest breach of medical data in U.S. history, affecting nearly half the country’s population.

A breach of this magnitude can have devastating consequences for the American people as malicious actors could exploit the data for a range of attacks if it finds its way to the dark web.

    The updated impact assessment

UnitedHealth confirmed on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, that the ransomware attack on its Change Healthcare unit affected approximately 190 million people in the United States. The company had previously estimated the number of affected individuals to be around 100 million in its preliminary analysis filed with the Office for Civil Rights, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that investigates data breaches.

    WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

UnitedHealth stated that the majority of those impacted have already been notified, either directly or through substitute notice. The final tally of affected individuals will be confirmed and submitted to the Office for Civil Rights at a later date.

The company tells CyberGuy it is “not aware of any misuse of individuals’ information as a result of this incident and has not seen electronic medical record databases appear in the data during the analysis.” However, UnitedHealth did not disclose when it became aware of the additional 90 million victims, how the revised figure was determined or what changes led to the updated number.

THE HIDDEN COSTS OF FREE APPS: YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

What you need to know about the data breach

The cyberattack on Change Healthcare in February caused widespread disruptions across the U.S. healthcare sector, as the company took its systems offline to contain the breach. This shutdown impacted critical services such as claims processing, payments and data sharing, which many healthcare providers rely on.

The stolen data varied by individual but included a broad range of personal and sensitive information, such as names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses and government ID numbers, including Social Security, driver’s license and passport details.

Plus, hackers may have accessed health-related information, including diagnoses, medications, test results, imaging records, care and treatment plans, and health insurance details. Financial and banking information tied to claims and payment data was also reportedly compromised.

The breach was the result of a ransomware attack carried out by ALPHV/BlackCat, a Russian-speaking ransomware and extortion group. The attack, a form of malware intrusion, locks victims out of their data unless a ransom is paid. ALPHV/BlackCat later took credit for the attack.

During a House hearing in April, Change Healthcare admitted that the breach was made possible due to inadequate security measures, specifically the absence of two-factor authentication to protect its systems.

FROM TIKTOK TO TROUBLE: HOW YOUR ONLINE DATA CAN BE WEAPONIZED AGAINST YOU

6 ways to protect yourself from Change Healthcare data breach

    1. Remove your personal information from the internet: The breach has exposed sensitive personal data, making it essential to reduce your online footprint. While no service can guarantee complete data removal, a reputable data removal service can significantly limit your exposure. These services systematically monitor and erase your personal information from numerous websites and data brokers. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

    2. Be wary of mailbox communications: With addresses among the compromised data, scammers may exploit this breach to send fraudulent letters. Be aware of mail claiming missed deliveries, account suspensions or security alerts. Always verify the authenticity of such communications before responding or taking action.

    3. Be cautious of phishing attempts and use strong antivirus software: Scammers may use your compromised email or phone number to target you with phishing attacks. Be wary of messages asking for personal information or containing suspicious links. To protect yourself, ensure strong antivirus software is installed on all your devices. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

    4. Monitor your accounts: Given the scope of this breach, regular monitoring of your bank accounts, credit card statements and other financial accounts is critical. Look for unauthorized transactions or suspicious activity and immediately report any issues to your bank or credit card provider.

    5. Recognize and report a Social Security scam: If your Social Security number is exposed, you could become a target for related scams. Official communication regarding Social Security issues usually comes via mail, not phone calls or emails. Learn more about spotting and reporting scams by visiting the Social Security Administration’s scam information page.

    6. Invest in identity theft protection: Data breaches happen every day, and most never make the headlines, but with an identity theft protection service, you’ll be notified if and when you are affected. Identity theft companies can monitor personal information like your Social Security number, phone number and email address and alert you if it is being sold on the dark web or being used to open an account. They can also assist you in freezing your bank and credit card accounts to prevent further unauthorized use by criminals. See my tips and best picks on how to protect yourself from identity theft.

MASSIVE SECURITY FLAW PUTS MOST POPULAR BROWSERS AT RISK ON MAC

    Kurt’s key takeaway

It’s surprising that a company of UnitedHealth’s scale failed to implement even basic cybersecurity measures when handling customer data. A breach affecting 190 million people – nearly half of the U.S. population – is staggering, leaving almost anyone at risk of becoming a target for hackers. While the company is still assessing the full extent of the breach, you can take precautions now by being cautious with any unknown links or unsolicited calls. Bad actors may use a variety of tactics to cause harm.

Mahakumbh 2025: ‘IIT Baba,’ ‘Maha Kumbh Ki Monalisa,’ ‘Beautiful Sadhvi’ Harsha Richhariya & More, What Should Not Have Been Viral at the World’s Largest Spiritual Gathering

The most-awaited spiritual gathering in India, Mahakumbh, is underway. This sacred congregation, deeply rooted in the Hindu tradition, has drawn millions of devotees, seekers and saints from across the globe. The Maha Kumbh 2025 is especially significant due to its alignment with rare celestial configurations that occur once every 144 years, amplifying its spiritual significance and an unprecedented number of pilgrims. As the banks of the Triveni Sangam—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati at Prayagraj host the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, the event is making headlines owing to a few selected ‘babas,’ ‘sadhus,’ ‘sadhvis’ and a garland seller among many! But should they have gone viral, especially at a holy and spiritual gathering as big as the Mahakumbh? The internet’s attention to a few attendees at the Kumbh Mela certainly raised eyebrows, getting mired in controversy owing to Instagram reels and viral videos. Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 Start and End Dates in Prayagraj.

    ‘Beautiful Sadhvi’ Harsha Richhariya

Harsha Richhariya grabbed attention at the Mahakumbh when the cameras panned on her as she moved on a chariot right on the day of the first Amrit Snan, January 14. Her videos and pictures went viral online, making internet users curious about who she is, with some followers referring to her as the “most beautiful Sadhvi.” The unwanted attention is met with disapproval from a section of ascetics, emphasising Kumbh Mela’s purpose is to spread spiritual knowledge rather than serve as a stage for personal publicity. The model-influencer soon became a bone of contention among seers. The ongoing discussions around her reflect differing perspectives on tradition, modernity and what should be the role of individuals in spiritual events. ‘Sadhvi’ Harsha Richhariya Offered Lead Role in ‘Deshdrohi 2’ by KRK After Videos of Host Turned Sadhvi From Maha Kumbh 2025 Goes Viral.

The engineer turned ‘Sanyasi’ and his quest for spirituality earned him the title ‘IIT Baba’ on social media. His intriguing story sparked widespread curiosity. However, soon after his popularity, things became controversial when he was accused of allegedly using abusive language towards his Guru, Mahant Someshwar Puri. As a consequence, Singh has reportedly been barred from entering the Akhada camp and its vicinity. The Akhada stated that discipline and devotion to one’s Guru are fundamental tenets of Sanyas and anyone failing to uphold these values cannot be recognised as a Sanyasi. In addition, reports stated that the constant media interactions affected his mental health, while some even accused him of taking drugs. Who Is ‘IIT Baba’ Abhay Singh at Maha Kumbh Mela?

    ‘Maha Kumbh Ki Monalisa’

A rudraksha seller from Indore, Monalisa Bhonsle, went viral for her amber eyes and dusky skin. Her striking features have drawn comparisons to the iconic Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. Spotted by a YouTuber and content creator, the young girl and her family seemed to have initially enjoyed the attention, but soon, it turned into harassment, with a crowd of men following and hounding her for selfies. It affected her private space and business, and she was forced to return home by her worried father. Praises or Harassment? In all the above viral instances, among many, the videos and photos from the ongoing event majorly revolve around someone’s beauty and intellectual abilities. And the spiritual gathering at Mahakumbh is more than that. It is certain that anything unique pleases the eye, but the constant chase of virality among influencers and YouTubers in the name of “content” diverts the significance of Kumbh Mela. And at the heart, the viewers, readers—us- are to be blamed for consuming content that meets the eyes. Given the widespread audience presence on digital platforms and the number of likes, views and comments, it is often reasoning for influencers to prioritise virality over the true essence of a spiritual gathering like Kumbh.

The Mahakumbh is not just a religious congregation but a convergence of faith, history and unique culture. What makes the 2025 edition of this grand mela even more remarkable is its celestial alignment, which occurs once in 144 years. This means 12 cycles of 12 different Kumbhs were completed before this year’s Mahakumbh. It’s significant, and the focus should have been more on its spiritual essence. It is beyond a person’s beauty and intellectual abilities. The pilgrims gathering at the Mahakumbh is seen as a divine moment for spiritual renewal and liberation. At the heart of the Maha Kumbh Mela lies the ritual of snan (holy bathing), worshipping, the enchanting lives of Sadhus, Aghoris and Kalpvasis in search of spiritual salvation. It is a living embodiment of India’s rich spiritual heritage, showcasing the coexistence of ancient traditions and modern aspirations, bringing together scholars, devotees and tourists alike.
