Apple and Google restore ability to download TikTok app

Apple and Google have restored access to the TikTok app after removing it briefly last month.

The app was removed from mobile stores to comply with a ban on the social media platform following a requirement for the Chinese technology company ByteDance to sell or shut it down.

At issue was the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, a law passed by Congress last April with wide bipartisan support. The law gave TikTok nine months to either divest from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, or be removed from U.S.-based app stores and hosting services.

Use of the app was restored shortly after it was removed from the app stores due to promises from President Trump to save it, but the ability to download it remained unavailable until Thursday.

Trump indicated prior to his election that he was going to extend the time before the law would be in effect so that he could effectively procure a deal that would also protect national security.

“The order will also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from going dark before my order,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

In a statement from the company, they thanked President Trump and said they will work with the administration to find a long-term solution.

“We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties for providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive,” TikTok stated.

Although access to the app has been restored, the status of the law is unresolved and there is still no solution. The app’s ownership also has still not been decided.

Mexico may sue Google over Gulf of America change

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Thursday her government was deciding whether to initiate a lawsuit against Google for renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America on Google Maps.

“We are going to wait. We are already seeing, observing what this would mean from the perspective of legal advice, but we hope that they will make a revision,” Sheinbaum said, according to Reuters.

Google renamed the body of water after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to change it. Now, Google Maps users in the United States will see “Gulf of America” in the app, and users outside the U.S. and Mexico see both terms, the company said.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory,” Trump said Tuesday. “The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.”

Sheinbaum has decried the move, saying the Gulf of Mexico name has long been recognized internationally.

“All we are asking of Google is to look at the decree that the White House released and that President Donald Trump signed. You’ll see in that decree that it does not refer to the whole gulf,” Sheinbaum said.

“If necessary, we will file a civil suit,” she added. “Our legal area is already looking into what that would mean, but we hope that (Google) reconsiders.”

Aside from Google, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) sent out a charting notice confirming that its systems were in the process of updating the name, in addition to updating the newly named Mount McKinley in Alaska, formerly known as Denali.

The name change from the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America” began rolling out across the U.S. on Monday, just a month after President Donald Trump announced his intention to Americanize the name.

On Monday, the FAA sent out a charting notice confirming that its systems were in the process of updating the name, in addition to updating the newly-named Mount McKinley in Alaska, formerly known as Denali.

“Please be advised that the FAA is in the process of updating our data and charts to show a name change from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and a name change from Denali to Mount McKinley. This will be targeted for the next publication cycle,” the notice read.

“This Charting Notice implements President Trump’s direction in Executive Order 14172, ‘Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,’ that the names be changed.”

On Jan. 7, Trump announced that the Gulf of Mexico would be given a new name, and signed an executive order finalizing the decision weeks later.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory,” Trump said on Tuesday. “The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.”

The decision was received well by social media users on Monday, who began noticing Google Maps implementing the changes.

“Google Maps FINALLY recognizes the Gulf of America!” one X user wrote. “Isn’t it beautiful?”

“I hate google, but tbh, mine says Gulf of America zoomed all the way out,” another said. “And boy is it glorious.”

Google drops diversity hiring targets: report

Google is dropping its diversity target of hiring more employees from “underrepresented groups” and is reviewing their DEI policies in the wake of President Donald Trump’s flurry of executive orders targeting diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, the Wall Street Journal reported.

An employee email stated that Google would no longer pursue goals related to increasing minority representation in its workforce, and is “evaluating changes to our programs required to comply” with Trump’s executive orders combating DEI initiatives with federal contractors.

“We’re committed to creating a workplace where all our employees can succeed and have equal opportunities, and over the last year we’ve been reviewing our programs designed to help us get there. We’ve updated our 10-k language to reflect this, and as a federal contractor, our teams are also evaluating changes required following recent court decisions and executive orders on this topic,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement.

The tech giant’s CEO Sundar Pichai announced in 2020 that the company would seek to increase the “leadership representation of underrepresented groups” 30% by 2025 as the U.S. was gripped in national turmoil following the police murder of George Floyd.

“Listening to the personal accounts of members of our Black Advisory Leadership Group and our Black+ Googlers has only reinforced for me the reality our Black communities face: one where systemic racism permeates every aspect of life, from interactions with law enforcement, to access to housing and capital, to health care, education, and the workplace,” Pichai wrote in a memo at the time.

Google is the latest domino to fall in Silicon Valley as company after company has announced that they are ending or rolling back their DEI initiatives. Meta announced that they are dropping their DEI initiatives in January following Trump’s historic election win. The social media conglomerate has also added UFC boss Dana White to their board and removed tampons from the men’s bathroom.

Amazon announced that they would be assessing their DEI policies in December, with HR executive Candi Castleberry telling employees that the company would be “evaluat[ing] their effectiveness.”

“We worked to unify employee groups together under one umbrella, and build programs that are open to all, rather than have individual groups build programs, we are focusing on programs with proven outcomes – and we also aim to foster a more truly inclusive culture,” Castleberry wrote.

Paypal has also removed its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives from its latest 10-K SEC filing. Its 2023 filing stated that the company believes that “fostering diversity, inclusion, equity, and belonging (“DIE&B”) is critical to our global talent strategy and pivotal to building a culture that embraces individual characteristics, values diversity, minimizes barriers, and enhances feelings of security and support across the workplace,” but the entire section was removed from their 2024 filing.

  • Don’t be so quick to click that Google Calendar invite. It could be a hacker’s trap

Don’t be so quick to click that Google Calendar invite. It could be a hacker’s trap

A sophisticated phishing campaign exploiting Google Calendar has been uncovered by Check Point Software Technologies, raising alarms among cybersecurity experts.

Cybercriminals are sending fake meeting invitations that appear legitimate, redirecting victims to phishing sites and mimicking Google’s platforms to steal sensitive information.

This emerging threat is particularly concerning given the widespread use of Google Calendar, which serves more than 500 million users globally in 41 languages. Researchers have identified nearly 4,000 phishing attempts in a matter of weeks, impersonating more than 300 reputable brands.

I’M GIVING AWAY THE LATEST & GREATEST AIRPODS PRO 2

Fake Google Meet invitation (Check Point Software Technologies)

    How the scam works

Hackers leverage the trust in Google’s services to carry out their attacks. Victims receive seemingly authentic meeting invites via Google Calendar. Upon clicking links within these invites, they are taken to fake web pages that prompt them to input personal data. Once compromised, this information can be used for identity theft, financial fraud and unauthorized access to other accounts. Security experts warn that attackers are now using AI to craft highly convincing fake invitations, making it even harder to spot the fraud. Reacting to the findings from Check Point, a spokesperson for Google said:

    WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

“We recommend users enable the ‘Only If The Sender Is Known’ setting in Google Calendar. This setting helps defend against this type of phishing by alerting the user when they receive an invitation from someone not in their contact list and/or they have not interacted with from their email address in the past.”

Google’s ‘Known Senders’ setting: A shield against calendar phishing

Google has introduced the “known senders” feature in Google Calendar to combat sophisticated phishing attempts. This setting helps you filter out potentially malicious calendar invites. Here’s how to enable it:

    • Open Google Calendar and click the gear icon to access Settings
    • Under General, select Event Settings
    • In Add invitations to my calendar, choose Only if the sender is known

This ensures that only events from contacts, your organization or previous interactions are automatically added to your calendar.

    Additional security measures

To further protect yourself from phishing scams, follow these steps.

Scrutinize unexpected invites carefully: Examine the sender’s details, including their name, domain and email address, for any inconsistencies or signs of spoofing.

Avoid clicking suspicious links or downloading attachments from unknown sources: Threat actors often embed malicious links in calendar invites that can lead to phishing websites designed to steal your personal information.

Use strong antivirus software: This provides an additional defense mechanism against malware and can help detect potential phishing attempts before they cause damage. The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for your Gmail account: 2FA adds an extra layer of security that can prevent unauthorized access, even if your credentials are compromised.

Keep your security settings up to date: Regularly review and adjust your calendar and email settings to protect against evolving phishing tactics.

HOW A WRONG GOOGLE SEARCH CAN COMPROMISE YOUR DATA AND BRING LAW ENFORCEMENT CALLING

    Kurt’s key takeaways

As phishing tactics evolve, cybercriminals are exploiting trusted platforms like Google Calendar to bypass traditional security measures. This underscores the importance of user vigilance and proactive security practices. By enabling the “known senders” setting and implementing additional security measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to calendar-based phishing scams.
