Jim Jones, head of FDA’s food division, resigns after job cuts at the agency

The head of the Food and Drug Administration’s food division resigned on Monday after stating widespread cuts across the agency will make it challenging to meet the Trump administration’s desired changes, according to a report.

Jim Jones cited the termination of 89 staffers in the food division, criticizing the layoffs over the weekend as “indiscriminate,” Bloomberg News reported Monday evening.

“I was looking forward to working to pursue the department’s agenda of improving the health of Americans by reducing diet-related chronic disease and risks from chemicals in food,” he wrote in his resignation letter to Acting FDA Commissioner Sara Brenner, according to the outlet.

Jones said it would be “fruitless for me to continue in this role” because of the Trump administration’s “disdain for the very people” needed to make the changes it wants.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to Jones’ resignation, saying some “bureaucrats” are resistant to the “mandate delivered by the American people” in an email to Bloomberg News.

“President Trump is only interested in the best and most qualified people who are also willing to implement his America First Agenda on behalf of the American people,” she told the outlet. “It’s not for everyone, and that’s okay.”

The staffers who lost their jobs over the weekend include employees with “highly technical expertise in nutrition, infant formula, food safety response,” Jones said in his letter, noting that 10 terminated staffers were responsible for reviewing potentially unsafe ingredients in food.

Jones led a successful push to ban red dye No. 3, which had its authorization revoked by the FDA last month while former President Joe Biden was still in office.

  • Uber launches robot food delivery on East Coast

Uber launches robot food delivery on East Coast

Uber is expanding its use of robots to deliver food. This time, customers on the East Coast are getting a taste of the technology for the first time.

Starting this week, customers in Jersey City, New Jersey, will have their orders delivered by Avride autonomous robots. The companies, which joined forces in 2024, first launched the delivery robots for Uber Eats customers in Austin and Dallas, marking a major milestone for the entire industry that’s been rapidly trying to make advancements in self-driving technology.

Uber Eats customers who order from participating restaurants will be able to choose if they want their meal delivered by Avride robot or a traditional courier before confirming their order. When it initially launches, customers will be able to receive robot deliveries throughout downtown Jersey City between 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., though the company plans to expand its operating territory.

Its foray into the East Coast market marks the latest phase of Uber’s multiyear strategic partnership with Avride, which has been working to bring delivery robots and autonomous vehicles to Uber and Uber Eats.

A growing list of companies, from tech giants like Google’s Waymo to automakers like Tesla, are racing to make autonomous driving a reality by investing heavily in developing their own self-driving technology. But as companies heavily invested in their own operations, Uber dumped its program for an entirely new strategy.

UBER PARTNERS WITH WAYMO TO PROVIDE AUTONOMOUS DRIVING TECH TO RIDESHARE USERS IN ARIZONA

In 2020, it sold its autonomous vehicle research division, Uber Advanced Technologies Group, to self-driving car startup Aurora and created partnerships with driverless car companies to bring the technology to market and co-brand their efforts.

“Progress needs a partner. For autonomous vehicles, that partner is Uber. As the largest on-demand mobility and delivery platform in the world, alongside our deep expertise in marketplace management, fleet utilization, and local operations – we’re uniquely positioned to help AV hardware and software developers deploy and scale their technology globally,” Uber’s website reads.

To date, Uber has more than a dozen autonomous vehicle partners, including Volvo, Aurora, Waymo, Cartken and Nuro that it’s working with to boost its autonomous delivery and taxi services. With the latest Avride launch in New Jersey, Uber has autonomous delivery programs available in 11 cities with six partners. It’s not as far along with autonomous taxi services, though it’s slated to expand that service with Waymo over the next few months.

    WAYMO ROBOTAXIS COMING TO LA

The robots, in particular, can travel up to 5 mph for 31 miles on one single charge. They work in inclement weather, including snow, rain and sub-freezing temperatures, because their chassis provides traction on wet roads and data from various sensors offers sufficient visibility.

The ride-share giant and Google’s Waymo have already introduced autonomous driving in Phoenix and plan to expand autonomous rides to Austin, Texas, and Atlanta in early 2025.

An “Interest List” has been launched for Austin customers to increase their chances of being matched with a Waymo robotaxi ride when the service debuts.

Uber and Avride are expected to launch autonomous rides for Dallas residents in late 2026.

Brazil’s president tells country not to buy expensive groceries as food prices rise

Brazil’s leftist president recently told the country’s citizens not to purchase expensive grocery items in an effort to combat soaring food prices.

In a video being shared online, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva urged Brazilians to be frugal when grocery shopping.

“If you go to the supermarket in Salvador and you suspect that a certain product is expensive, don’t buy it,” he said. “Look, if everyone thought like that and didn’t buy things they thought were expensive, whoever is selling is going to have to lower the price in order to sell it.

“Because if they don’t, it’s going to spoil.”

On Thursday, da Silva said he was worried about rising food prices but projected the increases would slow and voiced an optimistic tone about the economy.

“The Brazilian economy is living its best moment,” Lula said during an interview with radio stations, Reuters reported.

The leftist leader noted that Brazil’s real was still at a low level against the U.S. dollar but sees the rate “adjusting,” according to Reuters.

In January, Brazilian Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said he expected food prices to decline this year due to strong agricultural production.

Prices tend to stay at high levels until food production “corrects this price distortion to an adequate level,” he told a local news outlet.

Haddad added that officials predict Brazil’s economy will grow 2.5% in 2025, slowing from an expected 3.5% last year.

Food deals abound for Super Bowl: what chains are offering

Many football fans are looking to munch on food during the upcoming Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, whether its snacks made at home or grub from restaurants.

Those hoping to get food from restaurants – and save some money – for the Big Game will be in luck because a slew of well-known chains have deals for Super Bowl Sunday or the Monday after it.

There are a slew of chicken wing deals, in particular.

Checkers & Rally’s restaurants will offer $1 bone-in wings for customers buying five, ten or 20 pieces “while supplies last” on Super Bowl Sunday. The promotion will be available in-store and for order-ahead, according to an Instagram post from the company.

At participating Applebee’s, football fans can plug in the promo code “SBWINGS25” on game day to get 20 free boneless wings with $40 orders placed via the chain’s website or app. The chain had over 1,500 locations across the U.S. as of the end of September.

DURING SUPER BOWL LIX, FANS WILL EAT A STAGGERING AMOUNT OF CHICKEN WINGS

Another chain – Outback Steakhouse – will also have a Super Bowl wing deal. The promotion, only available on Sunday, will be 59 wings for $59, according to the company.

A whopping 1.47 billion chicken wings are expected to be gobbled up by Super Bowl fans during Sunday’s match-up between the Eagles and Chiefs, the National Chicken Council forecasted.

Super Bowl food deals won’t be limited to chicken wings, however.

In anticipation of the Big Game, Pizza Hut rolled out an “Ultimate Hut Bundle” consisting of two medium pizzas, eight boneless wings and breadsticks with two dips. It carries a $24.99 price tag.

Meanwhile, Papa John’s is “offering our XL NY Style pizza for just $11.99 to all Super Bowl fans, including those who tune in just for the halftime show,” a spokesperson told FOX Business.

Mexican fast-food chain Chipotle, known for its burritos and bowls, said late last month that it will hold a “special activation” during the Super Bowl that “will reward up to 50,000 free entrees to fans” through “text-to-claim” codes it will post on X and Instagram.

The codes for the free entrees will go up on those social media sites when “extra” events like the team on offense converting on a fourth down or scoring a two-point conversion take place during the game, according to Chipotle.

Other companies will also have deals for the Monday after the Super Bowl.

Applebee’s on Monday will give dine-in customers six free boneless wings “should a pass be intercepted and returned for a touchdown” during the game if they ask their server for the “Pick 6 Monday” deal or use the code “PICK6” on online orders. A minimum $10 purchase is required for the deal.

At Starbucks, rewards members in the U.S. can get a complimentary tall hot or iced brewed coffee Monday with a coupon they can find in the chain’s app.

THROWING A SUPER BOWL PARTY? WHAT THIS YEAR’S FOODS WILL COST

The Super Bowl could also result in six free boneless or traditional wings at Buffalo Wild Wings between 2-5 p.m. on Feb. 24, but that will be contingent on the Eagles and Chiefs taking Sunday’s game into overtime. Customers eating at participating U.S. Buffalo Wild Wings locations during that three-hour window and those doing in-person takeout can get those free wings if that happens, the company said.

The Chiefs will come into the game as the defending champions. They have won four Super Bowls, including the past two, and are looking to notch a historic third back-to-back title.

Their Super Bowl opponents, the Eagles, have one championship title, won in 2018, under their belts.

Blue Ridge Beef is recalling 5,700 pounds of its Natural Mix due to salmonella contamination, according to a news release published by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Specifically, the brand is recalling the 2-pound logs of its Natural Mix with a lot number of N25/12/31 and an UPC number is 854298001054. The recall began after the North Carolina Department of Agriculture’s Food and Drug Protection Laboratory tested the product and found that it contained salmonella.

The dog food was sold in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee and Rhode Island.

The recall comes months after Blue Ridge Beef recalled 9,600 pounds of its puppy food, citing a similar salmonella contamination. According to the statement, the risk of salmonella can pose a threat to both animals and humans.

“Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products,” the release explained.

“Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever,” the statement added. “Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.”

According to Blue Ridge Beef’s website, the brand provides “the best known source of protein, appropriate natural nutrition for dogs and cats of all ages.”

  • What food will be impacted by Trump’s tariffs

What food will be impacted by Trump’s tariffs

A swath of foods will be impacted by sweeping tariffs the U.S. is placing on major trading partners in an effort to curb the flow of drugs and illegal immigrants into the country, according to experts.

With grocery retailers already operating on razor-thin profit margins – often ranging from 1% to 5% – such businesses may be inclined to pass costs on to customers, according to Kelly Beaton, the chief content officer at The Food Institute.

While tariffs on Mexican imports are suspended for one month, the U.S. is still following through on plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada as well as a 10% tariff on imports from China in response to the “threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs, including deadly fentanyl,” the White House said in a statement.

TRUMP TARIFFS TAKE EFFECT SATURDAY: WHAT TO KNOW

Canada retaliated with a 25% levy on U.S. imports that would take effect on Tuesday, and the Chinese government, which is also challenging Trump’s move, plans to take “respective countermeasures to reliably defend its rights and interests,” according to reports.

A customer shops at a grocery store on Feb. 13, 2024, in Chicago. (Scott Olson / Getty Images)

When tariffs are implemented, including ones pending against Mexico, the institute said that food and beverage products “will soon cost more,” according to Beaton, who referenced Mexican avocados, Mexican beers from brands like Modelo and Corona, Canadian maple syrup and Canadian grain as examples.

She also added that the “consensus seems to be that cereal could also soon cost more in America, since it’s a common import from all three countries that Trump has targeted with tariffs.”

TRUMP’S PROPOSED TARIFFS COULD DRIVE UP FOOD PRICES, EXPERTS SAY

There will be an impact on imported dairy, meat and various vegetables too, though it’s hard to pinpoint what that will look like, experts say.

The U.S. gets a significant amount of its hogs and beef imports from Canada, so there “will undoubtedly” be higher costs tied to importing these animals and will likely lead to higher prices for beef and pork in America, Beaton said. In 2022, the U.S. imported more than $37 billion worth of agricultural products from Canada, according to the U.S. Agriculture Department.

    grocery store

A shopper inside a grocery store in San Francisco on May 2, 2022. (David Paul Morris/Bloomberg via / Getty Images)

Sylvain Charlebois, professor and senior director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab, also highlighted the threat to meat prices given how reliant the U.S. is on Canada for such products, especially beef and pork.

“Canada is a key supplier to the U.S. meat market, and any added costs from tariffs could push up prices for American consumers,” Charlebois said, adding that the U.S. is already struggling to maintain beef supply due to drought and production issues.

Restricting Canadian imports will only “tighten the market further and contribute to inflation in this category,” Charlebois added.

There also may be “noticeable price increases” for seafood, particularly lobster and snow crab, especially in coastal regions where Canadian seafood is common. Stores may be forced to seek alternative sources, which could result in either higher prices for consumers, or they may cut back on inventory, Charlebois said.

But fresh produce is also at risk. For instance, greenhouse-grown vegetables from Canada, such as tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers play a significant role in U.S. grocery supply, particularly during colder months.

    woman grocery shopping

Regardless, the bigger issue, Charlebois said, is that the “broader impact of these tariffs could exacerbate food inflation in the U.S.” at a time when households are already struggling with grocery prices.

“While the full effect will depend on how retailers and suppliers respond, the tariffs are almost certain to increase costs for U.S. consumers, particularly in categories where Canada plays a crucial role in supply. This move could further strain household budgets, particularly for middle- and lower-income Americans who are already dealing with rising costs of living,” Charlebois continued.

TRUMP’S PROPOSED TARIFFS COULD DRIVE UP FOOD PRICES, EXPERTS SAY

Democrats and opponents have long argued that the cost of the tariffs would just be passed on to American consumers. Over the past several months, many retailers have raised concerns about the prospect of tariffs pumping up the costs of their products or even forcing them to cut back on inventory.

Trump said in a social media post on Sunday that there could “be some pain” for Americans but that “it will all be worth the price that must be paid.”

The White House said in a statement that the levies are a tactic for Trump “to hold Mexico, Canada, and China accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country.”

The tariffs are sending a message “that the flow of contraband drugs like fentanyl to the United States, through illicit distribution networks, has created a national emergency, including a public health crisis,” the White House said.

The teething products came in two flavors: strawberry apple and banana. The recall and discontinuation is only limited to those two flavors.
