Man offering to purchase landfill to find lost Bitcoin hard drive worth millions

A man is raising the stakes in his years-long battle to get back a hard drive that contains a discarded bitcoin key worth somewhere around $800 million by offering to purchase a landfill in Great Britain in an effort to find the wallet before it closes down.

James Howells has begged and pleaded with the Newport City Council, in South Wales, to gain access to the mountains of waste to find the hard drive that was accidentally thrown away in 2013, the New York Times reported.

“Seems like a better plan for me and the city,” Howells told the newspaper, noting that he envisions clearing out the trash and converting the site to a park, or possibly making it a dump site again. “The landfill gets cleaned. I get to dig for my hard drive.”

He previously offered to fully fund the excavation process and share 25% of the recovered Bitcoin with the Newport City Council. At the time, a judge stated that Howells had “no reasonable grounds” for bringing the claim and that there was “no realistic prospect” of success if the case were to proceed to a full trial.

Now the city is planning to close the landfill for good.

Howells, a computer science analyst, accidentally discarded the hard drive with a pile of trash. He was cleaning out his office in 2013 when he left it with other items destined for the dump. A miscommunication with his partner at the time led to the drive being gathered up and taken to the landfill, the Times reported.

KEVIN O’LEARY TAPS INTO POTENTIAL BITCOIN ‘BOMB’: ‘PRETTY INTERESTING’

To his misfortune, the hard drive, a backup from an old gaming computer, contained the only copy of his 51-character private key, used to access Bitcoin wallets. In the late 2000s, when cryptocurrency was in its infancy, Howell had mined it as a hobbyist.

However, he realized his mistake months later, as well as the fact that the Bitcoin wallet was worth millions. He’s been trying to get it back ever since.

Despite his attempts, the Newport City Council has suggested that the chances of Howells recovering the 12-year-old wallet are slim.

People pounce on Rick Warren for tweet about Jesus: “you’ll find him in the middle”

Rick Warren faced a raft of backlash on X in response to a post in which he referred to the two thieves who were crucified on either side of Jesus, and declared, “If you’re looking for the #realJesus, not a caricature disfigured by partisan motivations, you’ll find him in the middle, not on either side.”

Warren, the author of the popular book “The Purpose Driven Life,” founded Saddleback Church with his wife Kay in 1980, according to pastorrick.com.

His Feb. 11 post has earned thousands of replies and more than 3 million views.

“This is possibly the worst Biblical interpretation I’ve ever seen, and that’s really saying something,” conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey declared. “Jesus is not ‘in the middle’ on the murder of children, gender deception, the definition of marriage, or anything else, for that matter. In fact, I seem to remember Him having a particular disdain for the lukewarm.”

‘Making America expensive again’: Democrats find a tax they don’t like in Trump tariffs

Democrats are warning that Americans will face higher costs and end up paying the price for new tariffs President Donald Trump is imposing against Mexico, Canada and China.

The White House announced Friday that in response to an “invasion of illegal fentanyl” to the U.S., it would impose a 25% tariff on all goods entering the United States from Mexico and Canada, a 10% tariff on Canadian energy and a 10% tariff on all goods entering the U.S. from China.

Tariffs against China went into effect Tuesday, although Trump agreed to push back tariffs against Mexico and Canada by at least one month after discussions with each respective country about securing the border.

While Trump acknowledged Friday the tariffs might result in “temporary, short-term disruption,” Democrats claim American taxpayers will end up hurting and paying the price.

According to one Washington think tank, the nonpartisan Peterson Institute for International Economics, these rounds of tariffs are expected to cost U.S. households roughly $1,200 a year annually.

As a result, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., took a jab at Trump and mocked the president’s coined expression about a “golden age” of economic prosperity.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., left, poked fun at President Donald Trump’s “golden age” of economic prosperity after announcing new tariffs against Mexico, Canada and China.  (Reuters)

“President Trump kickstarted a golden age of higher costs for American families with his 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico,” Schumer said Monday on the Senate floor. “Two of our four biggest trading partners by issuing his tariffs. Donald Trump is yet again rigging the game for his billionaire friends, while doing nothing to lower costs for American families.”

“The Trump tariffs will make gas prices go up, and we should not listen at all to Donald Trump when he says it’s about stopping fentanyl,” Schumer said. “That’s nonsense. There are other ways to stop fentanyl without making inflation worse and raising costs on the American family.”

Additionally, Sens. Chris Coons, D-Del., and Tim Kaine, D-Va., introduced legislation Thursday that would increase legislative branch oversight before imposing new tariffs. Specifically, the legislation would require the president to brief Congress on tariff proposals and impacts on the U.S. economy and foreign policy interests.

The measure, known as the Stopping Tariffs on Allies and Bolstering Legislative Exercise of (STABLE) Trade Policy Act, also would require approval from Congress before executing any new tariffs on U.S. allies or other free trade agreement partners.

Coons warned that the American people would pay the price for the tariffs, which he labeled the “largest tax increase” on Americans in a long time. Coons also cautioned that imposing tariffs on Mexico and Canada would turn them into “nervous neighbors” and could jeopardize relationships with allies.

“China, Mexico, and Canada are our three largest trading partners,” Coons said in a statement Friday. “It’s the largest tax increase on working Americans in a long time, and it will cost them thousands of dollars every year. President Trump is making America expensive again.”

Experts have warned that the costs of foods like avocados, dairy and certain meats could go up as a result of the tariffs. For example, Kelly Beaton, the chief content officer at The Food Institute, noted that the U.S. receives a large portion of hog and beef imports from Canada. These tariffs “will undoubtedly” lead to higher import costs, and, ultimately, higher beef and pork prices for American consumers, she said, Fox Business reports.

Likewise, Democratic Reps. Suzan DelBene, D-Wash., and Don Beyer, D-Va., also introduced legislation in January that would block Trump from using emergency powers to implement tariffs, amid concerns that American consumers would end up footing the bill.

“Not only would widespread tariffs drive up costs at home and likely send our economy into recession, but they would likely lead to significant retaliation, hurting American workers, farmers, and businesses,” DelBene said in a statement on Jan. 15.

In response to Americans absorbing costs from the tariffs, Trump said in a post Sunday on Truth Social: “WILL THERE BE SOME PAIN? YES, MAYBE (AND MAYBE NOT!). BUT WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, AND IT WILL ALL BE WORTH THE PRICE THAT MUST BE PAID.”

While Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told NBC News’ “60 Minutes” he predicted tariffs would drive up consumer costs, other Republicans like Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. told Fox News Sunday that the tariffs are designed to “get these countries to change their behavior.”

The tariffs were being imposed due to an “unprecedented invasion of illegal fentanyl that is killing American citizens,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Friday.

The tariffs were being imposed due to an “unprecedented invasion of illegal fentanyl that is killing American citizens,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Jan. 31, 2025.

Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke on Monday, resulting in the postponement of the tariffs against Mexico for one month. Additionally, Sheinbaum promised to dispatch 10,000 troops to the U.S.–Mexico border.

Likewise, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled plans for a $1.3 billion border plan, requiring reinforcements at the border with “new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl.”

“Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border,” Trudeau said in a social media post on X on Monday.

While Trudeau initially unveiled plans for Canada’s own 25% tariffs on up to $155 billion in U.S. imports on items such as fruit and alcohol. But Trudeau said Sunday the tariffs were on pause for at least 30 more days amid negotiations with the U.S.

Trudeau also said that “we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering.”

American Airlines plane crash: Kansas lawmakers vow to find answers

Kansas’ entire congressional delegation is vowing to find answers for the families grieving loved ones after the deadly crash of a flight from Wichita to Washington D.C., which officials have said left no survivors.

A Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines PSA commercial jet that was moments from landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport Wednesday night, temporarily halting all flights in and out of the small but critically located airport.

“Our prayers are with the families and friends of those affected by the tragic plane crash that occurred in our nation’s capital. South Central Kansas is a close community, and it’s likely that many of us directly or indirectly know people who were on Flight 5342 on Jan. 29,” the lawmakers’ joint written statement said.

“This is a sad day for Kansans and our nation, and this community, steeped in aviation and manufacturing history, will feel the pain of this catastrophe for years to come. We are grateful for the first responders and rescue crews who worked through the night.

“Our focus now is supporting the family and friends of those who perished, including the crew and military personnel, and then getting answers for the grieving individuals who have lost a loved one and making sure this doesn’t happen again.”

It was signed by GOP Kansas senators Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran, as well as Republican House representatives Ron Estes, Tracey Mann, Derek Schmidt and the delegation’s lone Democrat, Sharice Davids.

Estes represents much of Wichita, where the flight originated.

Moran said in a press conference shortly after midnight Thursday he was familiar with the flight route, having lobbied American Airlines for it to begin last year.

President Donald Trump briefed reporters on the crisis earlier Thursday, saying there were no survivors from the crash.

Members of Trump’s new Cabinet, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, both promised to find swift answers for the families grieving loved ones after the crash.

Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., who represents Arlington County, where the airport is located, similarly said he would work toward accountability.

“As the local representative, I want the families to know that our office is available to serve you in any way that we possibly can in this time of grief and transition and loss,” Beyer said at another press conference Thursday morning.

“And then, also, I’d just note that we are deeply grateful for the people who risked their lives last night on a moment’s notice and spent the whole night on the river in the ice and the wind, serving us.”

Beyer added that, through the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) probe into the crash, “we’ve got to make sure that, at the federal level and with the support of Virginia, Maryland, and D.C., we’re doing everything we can to make sure that this does not happen again.”

U.S. officials are investigating why the Black Hawk helicopter flew into the path of the descending plane, Duffy told reporters.

“I would say the helicopter was aware there was a plane in the area,” he said.

Hegseth said the helicopter was manned by an experienced crew and was undergoing an “annual proficiency training flight.”

Duffy told reporters that while the collision was a highly unusual and tragic event, the two aircraft’s mutual patterns were not atypical.

Scammers find sneaky way to bypass your iPhone’s safety features

In an alarming development, cybercriminals have devised a new method to circumvent Apple’s built-in phishing protection for iMessage, potentially exposing you to malicious links and scams. This sophisticated tactic exploits a security feature designed to protect you, turning it into a vulnerability that could lead to significant personal and financial risks.

Scammer’s phishing text message sent to iPhone (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

    The trick unveiled

Apple’s iMessage automatically disables links in messages from unknown senders as a security measure. However, cybercriminals have found a way to exploit this protection. By instructing you to reply to the message, often with a simple “Y,” the attackers can re-enable previously disabled links. This seemingly innocuous action not only activates the links but also signals to the scammers that they’ve found an engaged target for future attacks.

We reached out to Apple for a comment but did not hear back before our deadline.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR IPHONE & IPAD FROM MALWARE

    Common phishing lures

These deceptive messages often masquerade as notifications from trusted organizations, such as:

    • Undeliverable packages from courier services (USPS, DHL, FedEx)
    • Unpaid road tolls
    • Outstanding payments or fees

The messages typically end with instructions like: “(Please reply Y, then exit the SMS, re-open the SMS activation link, or copy the link to open in Safari).”

THE ONE SIMPLE TRICK TO HELP KEEP OUT CYBER CREEPS ON IPHONE

    The rising threat of smishing

This new tactic is part of a broader trend of smishing (SMS phishing) attacks targeting mobile users. With the increasing reliance on smartphones for various activities, including financial transactions and personal communications, these attacks pose a significant threat to users’ security and privacy.

DOES MY IPHONE NEED ANTIVIRUS PROTECTION?

    How to protect yourself

To safeguard against these sophisticated phishing attempts, consider the following steps.

    1) Never reply to suspicious messages: Avoid responding to texts from unknown senders, especially those asking you to reply to activate links. Additionally, make sure to delete suspicious text messages and block the sender to prevent further attempts. Since the sender is not in your contact list, you can click Report Junk at the bottom of the text. Then click Delete and Report Junk. This will report the conversation as junk by sending it to your wireless carrier and Apple using your phone number.

    2) Verify sender identity: Contact organizations directly through official channels if you’re unsure about a message’s legitimacy.

    3) Be skeptical of urgency: Scammers often use urgent language to prompt quick, thoughtless actions.

    4) Enable message filtering: Use your device’s built-in filtering options to sort messages from unknown senders. Here are the steps:

    • Open Settings
    • Scroll down and click Apps
    • Tap Messages
    • Turn on Filter Unknown Senders

This feature allows you to automatically sort messages from unknown senders, easily filter unread messages and manage your message inbox more efficiently.

    5) Use two-factor authentication (2FA): 2FA adds an extra layer of security to your accounts by requiring a second form of verification, such as a text message or authentication app, in addition to your password. This significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access, even if your password is compromised.

    6) Have strong antivirus software: The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links that install malware, potentially accessing your private information, is to have antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

    7) Invest in personal data removal services: By reducing your online footprint, you make it harder for cybercriminals to obtain your contact information, potentially preventing them from sending you these deceptive iMessage phishing texts in the first place. While no service promises to remove all your data from the internet, having a removal service is great if you want to constantly monitor and automate the process of removing your information from hundreds of sites continuously over a longer period of time. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

What to do if you’ve been targeted

If you suspect you’ve fallen victim to a smishing attack:

    • Report the incident to relevant authorities and institutions
    • Freeze your credit to prevent potential identity fraud
    • Change passwords and PINs for all your accounts; consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords
    • Monitor your finances and online accounts for suspicious activity
    • Use an identity theft protection service: Identity theft companies can monitor personal information like your Social Security number, phone number and email address and alert you if it is being sold on the dark web or being used to open an account. They can also assist you in freezing your bank and credit card accounts to prevent further unauthorized use by criminals.

One of the best parts of some identity theft protection services is that they have identity theft insurance of up to $1 million to cover losses and legal fees and a white-glove fraud resolution team where a U.S.-based case manager helps you recover any losses. See my tips and best picks on how to protect yourself from identity theft.
