Alabama AD suggests forfeits for home team if their fans storm court or field after big wins

University of Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne floated a possible idea on how to stop students and fans from storming the court after major wins.

Students and fans celebrate big wins, usually in football or basketball, by going onto the court or field to celebrate. At its most extreme, fans tear down goalposts and remove them from the field. There is also an ugly side in which fans and players get into a fracas as well.

Byrne said there is a way to stop it altogether.

“I think from a safety standpoint, keeping people off the fields and courts is a good thing for everybody involved,” he told ESPN. “If we said that the home team, if they storm the field or the court, they’re going to lose the game right then and there, that will stop it.”

Byrne said he is OK with the criticism he is opening himself up to and is willing to listen to better ideas.

Right now, some conferences fine schools over the celebrations. The SEC has a fine structure for court and field storming. A school is fined $100,000 for the first incident, $250,000 for the second and $500,000 for the third.

“I think that’s a tough proposition,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey told ESPN of Byrne’s proposal. “I do think there’s more than Greg in this league who feel that way, though.”

In recent years, the storming has led to incidents with fans.

Former Alabama tight end Jermaine Burton struck a woman who was a fan of Tennessee after the Volunteers upset the Crimson Tide two years ago. Former Duke men’s basketball star Kyle Filipowski also got involved in a fracas with fans after the Blue Devils lost a game to Wake Forest.

  • Chiefs’ Travis Kelce walks off field downcast after Super Bowl LIX loss in possible final game

Chiefs’ Travis Kelce walks off field downcast after Super Bowl LIX loss in possible final game

Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce looked downcast as he walked off the field at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans following a Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kelce’s performance was far from what the Chiefs and NFL fans are used to seeing in big moments. The tough and low catches he usually makes, he did not make on Sunday night. He had four catches on six targets for 39 yards in the game.

The broadcast caught Kelce walking off the field. He spoke briefly about the 40-22 loss afterward.

“We haven’t played that bad all year. You don’t lose like that without everything going bad,” he said.

The question Kelce will face now is whether he will return to the Chiefs for another season. The 35-year-old’s production was clearly down starting the 2024 season. He had moments when he showed flashes of himself in his prime, but it was far from what Kansas City previously received from him.

Retirement rumors had swirled around him over the last weeks of the year.

“I’ll let Travis make that decision on his own,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said after the game. “He knows he still has a lot of football left in him. I mean, you can see it. He always makes plays in the biggest moment, but it’s if he wants to put in that grind, because it takes it to go out there and play 20 games, whatever it is, and get to the Super Bowl.

“He’s done enough to be a gold-jacket guy and first-ballot Hall of Famer but I know he still has love for the game, and he’ll get to spend some time with his family and make that decision on his own.”

Trump greets Chiefs star on field at Super Bowl LIX after picking them to win Lombardi Trophy

President Donald Trump arrived at Caesars Superdome on Sunday, marking the first time a sitting president had ever attended the Super Bowl.

In a pre-taped interview with Bret Baier, the president tabbed the Kansas City Chiefs as his pick to win the big game.

As he entered the stadium, he took some time to walk around the field and shook hands with Chiefs star defensive lineman Chris Jones.

Jones has often been emotional during the playing of the national anthem, especially during the playoffs. He explained to reporters during the week why he cries.

“Quick story. I was watching the movie ‘300.’ One of my favorite movies, you know? Right before they go into battle, you have some like, crying, because they’re so mad. They’re going to war,” he said. “In a sense of playing football, I actually go into that mindframe, like, I might not make it home tonight – knowing I’m going to make it home, but knowing I’m going to war. It’s going to get bloody. It’s going to get physical. I might not make it out. I might make it out. So in the midst of the national anthem, I have to put myself in that mindframe.”

Trump said he was hesitant about making a pick because of the greatness that will be on the field. But, he took experience over all.

“I watched this great quarterback, who has, by the way, has a phenomenal wife,” he said, referencing Patrick and Brittany Mahomes. “She’s a Trump fan. She’s a MAGA fan, so I happened to love her, but she’s a great person.

“I guess you have to say a quarterback who has won as much as he’s won, I have to go with Kansas City.”

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was less than enthusiastic about Trump making the game, saying he could do “whatever he wants.” Both Mahomes said it was “cool” to play in front of him, while Traivs Kelce called it an “honor.”

The six-time Pro Bowler had five sacks and 37 tackles in 15 games this season. He has a sack and five tackles in the playoffs this year. He has 3.5 sacks in 21 playoff games in his career.

If Trump’s pick comes to fruition, the Chiefs would become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls. The potential historic run began two years ago against the Eagles.

Spectator dies after hammer weight flies into audience during track and field meet

A spectator at a track and field meet in Colorado was killed after being hit with a hammer thrown by one of the competitors in the event, officials said Sunday.

The club track and field meet consisting of high school athletes took place at the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, according to KXRM-TV. The hammer cleared the certified barriers and struck one of the spectators in the stands.

The spectator was pronounced dead at the scene, the station reported. The Colorado Springs Fire Department, university police and Colorado Springs police all responded to calls.

“We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved,” university chancellor Jennifer Sobanet said in a statement.

The victim was a father of one of the athletes competing in the event, according to the Colorado United Track Club.

Colorado Springs police told KRDO-TV that the man was protecting his wife from the 25-pound weight.

“If it was certified, I would believe it would be higher up and there wouldn’t be seating there and they would have already tested it to see if there was any possible incident, anything that could be possibly happening before you had two hundred people there,” one spectator told KKTV.

The hammer throw is one of the signature events in track and field competition. The weight is attached to a grip, and the athlete spins around and lets it go down the field.
