Shattering the ‘iron’ ceiling: New series ‘Guerrera’ explores vital role of US female troops in combat

Women in combat broke the “iron” ceiling more than a decade ago when female soldiers volunteered to throw themselves into some of the toughest operations carried out during the War on Terror, deploying with elite military units under a task force known as the Cultural Support Team (CST).

A new three-part documentary series, “Guerrera,” which bowed Saturday on Amazon, YouTube and Google TV, reveals the indispensable role women have played in combat.

“We did it — females in combat arms. The legacy is we broke the ceiling, the hard ceiling, not even a glass ceiling,” said retired Sgt. First Class Jeramy Neusmith, Army Ranger, who helped train the women of the CST program at Fort Bragg. “[It] was f—ing iron. We breached it.”

SHOULD WOMEN SERVE IN COMBAT? MILITARY EXPERTS WEIGH IN

The series uncovers little-known details about the female troops who were successfully paired with elite special operations units like Delta Force and the Army Rangers. Their goal was to address intelligence gaps in Afghanistan and Iraq by speaking with local women and children who had in-depth knowledge of active terrorist movements.

Though the documentary series was years in the making by producer and director Will Agee and executive producer Jessica Yahn — who served in the CST program — the timing of its release coincides with a moment in the U.S. where some in top positions are once again questioning whether women should have the right to fight with America’s elite.

“I’m straight up just saying we should not have women in combat roles. It hasn’t made us more effective, hasn’t made us more lethal, it has made fighting more complicated,” then-nominee and now confirmed Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said during a November 2024 interview with “The Sean Ryan Show.” Later in an interview on “The Megyn Kelly Show,” he appeared to have shifted his position and said, “If we have the right standard and women meet that standard, roger. Let’s go.”

Hegseth did not repeat his previously stated beliefs when pressed about it during his January confirmation and has said he does not plan to reverse the 2013 Combat Exclusion Policy, which allowed women to vie for elite positions.

But his comments renewed an old debate about the effectiveness of women in combat — despite more than a decade of evidence proving capability and operational efficacy.

‘GREATEST WARRIORS’: HEGSETH RAILS AGAINST ‘MISCONSTRUED’ NARRATIVE THAT HE’S AGAINST WOMEN IN MILITARY

“Regardless of what side of the political spectrum you’re on — which there’s plenty of Republicans, plenty of Democrats in “Guerrera” — every single one of them, man and woman, want a high standard, and that is such a unifying point,” Yahn told Fox News Digital. “I hope what comes out of the film is just the essence that more unites us than divides us.

“And it’s just a matter of getting down to that rich discourse and breaking through some of those things that we immediately may perceive the other side is thinking.”

In the series, Neusmith argues the turning point in what would become a major shift in American policy for women in combat started after 1st Lt. Ashley White was killed alongside Ranger forces during an operation in Afghanistan in 2011.

White became the first CST member to be killed in combat after she and the team of Rangers she was attached to entered a compound booby-trapped with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). White and two other Rangers were killed on Oct. 22, 2011.

“Ashley died — she died in combat. No Rangers stopped, no Rangers turned around, cried, no one wept, right on target,” Neusmith highlights in the series. “They did their job, and then they went back and handled the death of their comrade. We beat the stigma.

“All the stigmas they put out there — bone density, you know, men are going to be susceptible, you know, they’ll pay attention to women. No,” he continued. “I mean, they cared, but they couldn’t care at that time. They had to do their job.”

Veterans Rachel Washburn and Rose Mattie are pictured during a deployment as part of the Army’s Cultural Support Team (CST). (Dulcinea Productions)

Though the CST women were assigned to elite units, they were not special forces, and technically it was still illegal for women to serve in combat roles when the first batch of CSTs deployed in 2011. However, they were trained to not only keep up with the special forces, but to engage enemy combatants alongside America’s best-of-the-best.

‘ATTITUDE SHIFT’: HOW COVERT TEAMS OF FEMALE US AND AFGHAN SOLDIERS OPENED THE DOOR FOR WOMEN IN COMBAT

“One of my pet peeves is when people try to blame something on a gender or a race or a sexual preference or anything but the human standing in front of you, who can or cannot do something,” said retired Seg. Major George Fraser, Special Forces, who also received four Purple Hearts and six Bronze Stars for Valor. “That’s the end of it for me.”

The series is dedicated to Capt. Jennifer Moreno, the second woman in the CST program to die in combat while out with her team of Rangers on Oct. 5, 2013, during a raid on a compound in Afghanistan.

Moreno and the team she was with were ambushed after combatants lured the unit into a deactivated minefield, before the IEDs were then activated by the terrorists they were pursuing.

The situation was akin to “teleporting yourself into the middle of a minefield,” explained Special Operations Veteran Luke Ryan, Army Ranger, who was there that night.

The operation, which was expected to be a “quick snatch and go,” became one of the most brutal nights of the war, which saw four American soldiers killed and 30 others wounded.

Moreno, a trained nurse, was killed after she ran across the IED-embedded compound in an attempt to reach a fallen comrade.

“She was going to save a life come hell or high water,” said retired Sgt. Tom Block, Army Ranger, who was severely wounded by a suicide bomber that night, permanently costing him his right eye. “She embodied heroism that night.”

Sgt. Joseph Peters, Special Agent; Sgt. Patrick Hawkins, Army Ranger; and Pfc. Cody Patterson, Army Ranger, were also killed in the IED ambush.

The CST program, along with others like Lioness and Female Engagement Teams, contributed to the U.S. Department of Defense’s decision in 2013 to officially open up combat roles to women.

Women would not be permitted to vie for the elite slots until 2015, which would see the first two women to graduate from the infamous Army Ranger school. Since then, over 140 women have graduated from the program alongside their male peers.

Though the Army in 2022 lowered general physical standards for women and older troops completing annual physical exams, it did not alter the standards required from graduates of its elite programs like the Rangers or Green Berets.

The women of the CST program have championed calls to maintain universal standards for males and females in arms, but they flat reject the argument that women shouldn’t be allowed in combat.

When asked what Agee hopes viewers will take away from the series, he said first and foremost the “recognition of unsung heroes in our midst” and the “sacrifices that our men and women who serve in the military take day in and day out.”

Agee quoted a comment made by Ryan in the series in which he said, “There is a mechanism of dialogue that is broken in the United States right now.”

“I really would love ‘Guerrera’ to go a small step in fixing that mechanism of dialogue,” he said. “I hope we can watch a documentary film that deals with complicated concepts, that we will discuss them respectfully.”

“We can differ in terms of opinion, but we can all come back at the end of the day to understand and to underline the unity… [the] thing that we need the most of in this country,” Agee added. “It’s what makes a military unit thrive, and it’s also what I think makes a society thrive.”

The series “Guerrera” will also be released on Apple in the coming weeks.

The annual event aims to raise awareness and calls for efforts to eliminate female genital mutilation, a harmful practice that violates the human rights, health, and dignity of girls and women worldwide. International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is marked as part of the UN’s efforts to eradicate female genital mutilation. It was established by the United Nations in 2003.

FGM involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia for non-medical reasons, often rooted in deep-seated cultural, religious, or social norms. It can lead to severe physical and psychological consequences, including chronic pain, infections, childbirth complications, and trauma.  In this article, let’s know more about the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation 2025 date, history and the significance of the annual event. February 2025 Holidays and Festivals Calendar: Get Full List of Major Events in the Second Month of the Year.

Claressa Shields makes boxing history as 1st-ever female undisputed heavyweight champion

Boxer Claressa Shields made history in the ring on Sunday night.

Shields dropped Danielle Perkins to become the first-ever undisputed women’s heavyweight champion.

She is also the first boxer, male or female, to be the undisputed champion in three different weight classes in the four-belt era. Shields did so in junior middle weight and middle weight prior to this feat.

Perkins was undefeated up until the time Shields landed a right hook in the final seconds of the 10th and final round. That punch, which slumped Perkins for some seconds before she walked to a corner on the canvas, cemented history for Shields.

Perkins is now 5-1 for her career with two knockouts, while Shields remains undefeated at 16-0 with three knockouts.

After the match, Shields was excited about the win, but she revealed that she would actually need shoulder surgery after suffering an injury before the fight. She noted not being able to lift her left arm earlier in the week.

“I actually think I’m going to have to have surgery on my left arm. I tore my labrum last week, so the fight almost didn’t happen,” Shields said, via ESPN. “I didn’t want to let Flint down, but I really couldn’t use my jab the way that I wanted to, but I did the best that I could. I iced it, I did therapy, and now I think I’m going to have a shoulder surgery.”

Shields gave kudos to Perkins after the match, saying she was “strong as hell” with her punches in the ring. However, Shields was patient and struck at the last second when Perkins’ guard was down.

“My experience and my skills got me over it and also, I’ve been in plenty of street fights with bigger people and I had to use some of my skills in that today, too. So, when I dropped her in the last round, it’s because she got greedy,” Shields said of her opponent.

Shields landed 29% of her punches on Perkins, as well as 36% of her power punches. Perkins landed just 19% of punches.

“Not the race I was looking for at all this week, my spikes nearly fell off on the turn and with a poor start my time wasn’t nearly what I wanted,” the RIT runner wrote in an Instagram post.

“The good news is that the season just started, and I’m going to leave everything on the track at nationals,” Schreiner added with a transgender pride flag emoji.

Schreiner is one of a few NCAA transgender female athletes who compete against biological women despite the organization’s attempt to clamp down on the issue.

Schreiner is an advocate for trans-inclusion in women’s sports and complained last month about the lack of support from schools in the NCAA transfer portal.

“Trying to transfer into D1 has made it abundantly clear that people are too afraid to support me,” Schreiner wrote on Instagram. “I aimed to transfer in order to not only improve my athletic ability in a more competitive environment, but to help with the funds I needed to complete my degree.

‘Back to our roots’: Female GOP lawmakers work to win back feminism from the left

EXCLUSIVE: Female Republicans in Congress are fighting to change the decadeslong narrative that paints Democrats as the party of women, hoping it transcends to significant gains in future elections.

“We’ve got to get back to our roots of being the party of women,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., told Fox News Digital. “I don’t know why we ever allowed the Democrats to hijack the narrative and claim to be the party of women. That’s bull.”

Other GOP lawmakers who spoke with Fox News Digital about this story noted that cost of living, a cornerstone issue for Republicans in the last election, was as much a women’s issue as anyone else’s.

Republicans have also passed several bills since winning that election that have put women at the focus of conservative policy changes on transgender youth and border security.

“You should not let the Democrat Party tell you they’re the party of women if they can’t even define what a woman is. So we are going to continue to be strong advocates for young women and girls, whether that’s in professional spaces, in bathrooms or in sports,” said Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, referencing a recently passed bill keeping biological male student athletes out of girls’ sports teams and locker rooms.

Hinson said she is “a working mom fighting for other working moms.”

“Women are oftentimes the most important decision makers in a household, for example. So, when I’m thinking about economic indicators, how are we going to get more women in the workforce? How can we empower more women and families? How can we support more women in sports?” Hinson posed.

Historically, Malliotakis pointed out, it was Republicans who led passage of the 19th Amendment that secured women the right to vote. She also pointed out that it was under President Donald Trump that a museum dedicated to women’s history was authorized.

“President Trump authorized in 2020 the Smithsonian Women’s History Museum. And Joe Biden did nothing with it for four years,” Malliotakis said. ” “I’ve been pushing a land transfer for the Smithsonian women’s museum to be built, and I think it makes total sense that we would be the party that would do this, considering our history.”

As a voting bloc, women have favored Democrats and the left in recent history.

Democrats have also blamed Republicans for the conservative-leaning Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, a move that did appear to translate to electoral success in the 2022 midterms.

Progressives were also historically the biggest supporters of the Equal Rights Amendment, legislation that was pushed primarily during the second-wave feminist movement.

However, Republican women like Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., are now arguing that bills like hers, which would deport illegal immigrants who commit sex crimes against women and other Americans, are what it takes to protect women.

“MAGA is the new feminist,” Mace wrote on X this month.

Additionally, Rep. Julie Fedorchak, R-N.D., one of the few Republican women in the 119th Congress’ freshmen class, pointed out that her own story was a testament to GOP meritocracy.

“I was the largest vote-getter in my whole state out of anybody, as a woman, as the first congresswoman in our state. So I think more than anything else, people want folks who are primed for the job, who are competent and ready,” Fedorchak said.

“The cost of everything, making ends meet, helping women manage their multiple roles, getting government out of their lives, helping reinforce the role of parents…these are things that are women’s issues.”

Hamas releases 4 female hostages as part of Israel cease-fire deal

The terrorist group Hamas released four additional hostages from Gaza on Saturday after a ceasefire deal with Israel took effect nearly a week ago.

Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy and Liri Albag — all of whom are members of the Israeli Defense Forces —were freed on Saturday in the second round of hostage releases.

In exchange, Israel was expected to free 200 Palestinian prisoners or detainees, including 120 militants serving life sentences after being convicted of deadly attacks.

The first round of hostage releases on Sunday freed Romi Gonen, Emily Demari, and Doron Steinbrecher.

Video from Palestine Square in Gaza shows the four newly released women hostages being taken from the cars. They are alive and walking, wearing uniforms.

“The Red Cross has communicated that four Israeli hostages were transferred to them and are on their way toward IDF and ISA forces in the Gaza Strip,” the IDF and Israeli Securities Authority said in a joint statement.

The four female soldiers were believed to have been, at least at one time, held all together.

Under the ceasefire deal, a total of 33 hostages are to be set free over the course of six weeks, including those already released, in exchange for hundreds of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel.

Hamas agreed to release three female hostages on the first day of the deal, four on the seventh day and the remaining 26 over the next five weeks.

This is the second cease-fire achieved during the war that began more than a year ago.
