Man offering to purchase landfill to find lost Bitcoin hard drive worth millions

A man is raising the stakes in his years-long battle to get back a hard drive that contains a discarded bitcoin key worth somewhere around $800 million by offering to purchase a landfill in Great Britain in an effort to find the wallet before it closes down.

James Howells has begged and pleaded with the Newport City Council, in South Wales, to gain access to the mountains of waste to find the hard drive that was accidentally thrown away in 2013, the New York Times reported.

“Seems like a better plan for me and the city,” Howells told the newspaper, noting that he envisions clearing out the trash and converting the site to a park, or possibly making it a dump site again. “The landfill gets cleaned. I get to dig for my hard drive.”

He previously offered to fully fund the excavation process and share 25% of the recovered Bitcoin with the Newport City Council. At the time, a judge stated that Howells had “no reasonable grounds” for bringing the claim and that there was “no realistic prospect” of success if the case were to proceed to a full trial.

Now the city is planning to close the landfill for good.

Howells, a computer science analyst, accidentally discarded the hard drive with a pile of trash. He was cleaning out his office in 2013 when he left it with other items destined for the dump. A miscommunication with his partner at the time led to the drive being gathered up and taken to the landfill, the Times reported.

To his misfortune, the hard drive, a backup from an old gaming computer, contained the only copy of his 51-character private key, used to access Bitcoin wallets. In the late 2000s, when cryptocurrency was in its infancy, Howell had mined it as a hobbyist.

However, he realized his mistake months later, as well as the fact that the Bitcoin wallet was worth millions. He’s been trying to get it back ever since.

Despite his attempts, the Newport City Council has suggested that the chances of Howells recovering the 12-year-old wallet are slim.

“This needle is very, very, very valuable — $800 million,” Howells said “which means I’m willing to search every piece of hay in order to find the needle.”

  • Giants great Victor Cruz speaks highly of Saquon Barkley’s drive for greatness despite being on Eagles

Giants great Victor Cruz speaks highly of Saquon Barkley’s drive for greatness despite being on Eagles

New York Giants great and Super Bowl champion Victor Cruz has to give credit where credit is due – even if it means to someone wearing a green uniform.

“Obviously, it’s very hard for me to root for anything in green on an NFL football field,” Cruz told Fox News Digital on Radio Row at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.

Of course, Cruz is referring to the Philadelphia Eagles, who will be playing against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in the “Big Game.”

But there’s one player that Cruz can’t help but give props to, and that’s Saquon Barkley. He’s someone who left the Giants to head south to a division rival, and though he’s no longer on the team, his best career season to date in his first year in Philadelphia has led Barkley’s name to continuously be tied to the Giants.

Barkley said this week in New Orleans that all the Giants talk, whether it’s trolling or not, is starting to get played out.

Cruz obviously wishes Barkley were still wearing blue, but he knows that Barkley’s chase for greatness blocks out any outside noise.

“I think it’s just a testament to who he is and his character,” Cruz said while highlighting his partnership with Captain Morgan. “Ever since I met the guy, he’s been just the same. Just focused on being the best possible running back, the best person that he could be out there on that football field, because he knows if he does well out there, the legacy will take care of itself. He’s a firm believer in that, and I think he does a phenomenal job of being a phenomenal teammate and even better person.”

Barkley has been a difference-maker for the Eagles all season, and the team and its fan base all hope that remains the case for one more game, as the NFL’s leading rusher with over 2,000 yards needs to play well on Sunday to set the tone against the Chiefs.

Now, while Cruz may be giving his flowers to a former Giant like himself, that doesn’t mean he wants to see the Eagles lifting the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the day.

“Is there a way that Saquon can win, but the Eagles lose? Is that possible? That’s not possible,” Cruz said, jokingly. “So, yeah, I’m rooting for the legacy. I’m rooting for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. I just want to see if they can do it.

“I want Saquon to perform well, but I’m rooting for the guys in red to see if they can complete the trifecta and do something we haven’t seen before.”

TURNING BOURBON STREET INTO “RUM STREET”

Cruz is helping Captain Morgan throw one of the biggest parties for Super Bowl week in New Orleans, as the ultimate ‘Rum Street’ celebration begins on Saturday with a party that includes a performance from none other than T-Pain.

“Having T-Pain on Rum Street is going to be pretty insane and pretty intense, so I’m excited for that,” Cruz said. “I’ve been a T-Pain fan for years, and obviously, giving back to the fans. That’s always a big deal for myself, and Captain Morgan feels the same way. It’s just always dope to give back to the fans. They’re the real star in all of this.”

“Rum Street” will also be a way to toast all fans, as they will get handed $10 in “Captain’s Cash” to spend at their favorite bar on Bourbon Street during the week. Captain Morgan slapped QR codes throughout the city, and fans can just scan and get their $10 to use as they please.

“It just goes hand in hand when you’re in a city like New Orleans, and you got Captain Morgan, the official rum of the NFL. So, having parties with them and having their energy down here just makes sense,” Cruz said.

A laptop and external hard drives (Kurt “CyberGuy” Knutsson)

Choosing the right external hard drive

First things first, you’ll want to use an external hard drive you already have or purchase a new one. External hard drives offer massive storage for all your digital memories. My favorites are small, portable drives with no moving parts called SSDs, or solid-state drives. When selecting an external hard drive, consider these key factors.

    • Storage capacity: Drives range from 128GB to a massive 24TB. For most users, 1TB or 2TB drives are popular choices
    • HDD vs. SSD: HDDs offer larger capacities at lower prices, while SSDs provide faster speeds and better durability
    • Transfer speed and connectivity: Look for USB 3.1 Gen2, USB 3.2 Gen2 or Thunderbolt 4 for the fastest speeds
    • Portability and durability: If you’ll be carrying your drive frequently, choose lightweight, compact drives that don’t require external power
    • Security features: For sensitive data, consider drives with hardware encryption or biometric authentication

FIRST 10 THINGS TO DO IF YOU GOT A NEW PC

    Alternative transfer solutions

If you’re not into the manual method and prefer a more automated approach, there are other transfer solutions available:

    Cloud storage services

Cloud storage services like iCloud, Google Drive and Dropbox let you upload files and access them from anywhere. These services offer automatic syncing and backup, making file transfer and storage more convenient. Popular options include Microsoft OneDrive, Proton Drive and IDrive. Get Kurt’s favorite cloud services here.

    File History (Windows)

Windows users can utilize the built-in File History feature to automatically back up files to an external drive. This is suitable for a small number of folders but may be time-consuming for large quantities of data.

    Professional backup software

For faster and more efficient transfers, especially when dealing with large quantities of files, consider using professional backup software. These tools often provide features like automatic backups, file compression and encryption for added security.

  • Dems claim Trump tariff could ‘drive up’ costs despite deflecting blame from Biden’s inflation

Dems claim Trump tariff could ‘drive up’ costs despite deflecting blame from Biden’s inflation

Democratic lawmakers are claiming that President Donald Trump’s impending tax on international goods will raise costs, despite spending years deflecting blame for high prices from the Biden administration.

Trump signed an executive order Saturday night to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada and a 10% tax on all imports from China, fulfilling a promise he made during his 2024 presidential campaign as a way to circumvent drug trafficking into the U.S.

The tariffs on Canada and China are set to go into effect at midnight, but Trump announced on Monday that he would pause the tariff on Mexico for one month after discussions with President Claudia Sheinbaum. However, as the tariffs loom, Democrats are claiming they could drive up bills for everyday Americans, despite supporting several tax hikes under the Biden administration.

“This is a terrible idea,” Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., said in a statement. “Folks are already struggling to get ahead because of high prices, and now President Trump is about to drive up grocery and gas prices while raising costs on Arizona businesses.”

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., claimed Trump’s tariffs “could cost a typical family $1,200 per year,” while Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said that “President Trump owns the economic and national security fallout.”

TRUMP’S TARIFFS ON MEXICO, CANADA ARE THE ‘BEGINNING OF A NEGOTIATION,’ SAYS KEVIN O’LEARY

Additionally, Democratic Rep. Greg Stanton of Arizona cosigned a letter with 42 lawmakers calling on Trump to “immediately” rescind the 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada.

“Trump’s tariffs on Canada will do nothing but hurt American workers and auto manufacturers. He’s giving our overseas competitors a leg up,” Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., claimed in a reaction to the impending tax.

    Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md.

“It would be nice if Donald Trump could start focusing on getting the prices down instead of making them go up,” wrote Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. “I am concerned these new tariffs will further drive up costs for American consumers. We should be focused on going hard against competitors who rig the game, like China, rather than attacking our allies.”

While Democrats are uniting to criticize Trump’s tariffs, members of the party did not widely push back on tax increases implemented by former President Joe Biden.

During his administration, Democrats backed Biden’s proposals for a range of tax increases, including hikes on small businesses, corporations, capital gains and dividends, personal income, energy and a second estate tax.
