Panera Bread founder Ken Rosenthal dies at 81

Panera Bread founder Ken Rosenthal passed away on Friday at the age of 81. He was surrounded by family and leaves behind his wife, Linda “Laya” Rosenthal, and their four children.

In 1987, Rosenthal started Panera Bread’s precursor, the St. Louis Bread Company. The small bakery used a sourdough starter from San Francisco, which Panera says it still uses in its “iconic sourdough bread.”

    WHO STARTED PANERA?

Clayco founder Bob Clark, who is married to Rosenthal’s niece, recalled on his website the day the Panera founder came to him with a “crazy idea” to start a bakery. During a trip to San Francisco, Rosenthal became infatuated with sourdough bread, the very item that would inspire his business.

“I was more than a little shocked by the immediate positive reaction to the bakery. Lines of people…crowds…enthusiasm…buzz…all of the things you would want to have happen, which led to multiple stores being opened in short order,” Clark recalls.

“I remember Kenny fibbing to me that his plan was to open only four or five stores when it turned out that he had much more ambitious plans. Thank God he did not take any advice from me about anything other than construction.”

In telling Rosenthal’s “phenomenal success story,” Clark remembers the Panera founder as “humble and with a great sense of awe and humor.”

Rosenthal sold the chain in the 1990s and became a franchisee. The business he started was renamed, but its mission remained. The company says on its website that it still aims to put “a loaf of bread in every arm.”

Panera not only carries on Rosenthal’s business legacy, but his philanthropic values. The company partners with 3,300 charities across the US to donate unsold baked goods at the end of the day through its Day-End Dough-Nation program, according to Panera’s website. Additionally, the company works to help “underserved and at-risk children and youth” through The Panera Bread Foundation.

Australian teenager dies in devastating shark attack

A 17-year-old girl from Bribie Island, just north of Brisbane in Queensland, Australia, died Monday after being bitten by a shark nearly 100 meters offshore, according to reports.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Charlize Zmuda, a member of the Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club, was bitten on her arm by a shark while swimming about 100 meters off the beach.

She was reportedly helped in, Nine News reported, where crews from the Queensland Ambulance Service eventually met her.

The stretch of beach where Zmuda was injured, Woorim Beach, is an unpatrolled stretch of sand, and crews met her there at about 4:45 p.m. local time. The area is popular with off-road enthusiasts and campers.

Spectator dies after hammer weight flies into audience during track and field meet

A spectator at a track and field meet in Colorado was killed after being hit with a hammer thrown by one of the competitors in the event, officials said Sunday.

The club track and field meet consisting of high school athletes took place at the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, according to KXRM-TV. The hammer cleared the certified barriers and struck one of the spectators in the stands.

The spectator was pronounced dead at the scene, the station reported. The Colorado Springs Fire Department, university police and Colorado Springs police all responded to calls.

“We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved,” university chancellor Jennifer Sobanet said in a statement.

The victim was a father of one of the athletes competing in the event, according to the Colorado United Track Club.

Colorado Springs police told KRDO-TV that the man was protecting his wife from the 25-pound weight.

“If it was certified, I would believe it would be higher up and there wouldn’t be seating there and they would have already tested it to see if there was any possible incident, anything that could be possibly happening before you had two hundred people there,” one spectator told KKTV.

The hammer throw is one of the signature events in track and field competition. The weight is attached to a grip, and the athlete spins around and lets it go down the field.
