Matthew Stafford, Giants rumors swirl after team’s latest coaching move

With the Matthew Stafford trade rumors abuzz, the New York Giants made a move that added fuel to the fire.

The Giants hired Stafford’s brother-in-law, Chad Hall, as their assistant quarterback coach, per ESPN.

Hall is reuniting with current Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. The trio spent time together with the Buffalo Bills.

Hall was the Bills’ wide receiver coach while Daboll was the offensive coordinator, and Schoen was the assistant general manager with Buffalo. Hall spent last season with the Jacksonville Jaguars as their wide receiver coach.

Stafford’s wife and Hall’s sister, Kelly, had a caption in one of her recent Instagram posts that added to the trade rumors.

“Future might be blurry but the present is always clear with you,” Kelly’s full caption read below the blurry picture of her and Matthew.

Cooper Kupp, one of Stafford’s closest friends on the team, posted on X last week that the Los Angeles Rams are seeking to trade him.

Kelly expressed her thoughts about the Rams moving on from Kupp during a recent episode of her “Morning After” podcast.

“I will say, the trading away of Cooper, I am a little confused because we were one play away from the NFC Championship and I think if we go, we win,” Kelly said.

“… And there’s now talk about trading your quarterback away. I don’t get it.”

Kelly even went a step further, saying if Matthew decided against playing for the Rams that she would be “good” with it.

“I love the life that we have built here. With that being said, I love an adventure. I am all for it. Right now, if the Rams decided that they wanted to trade [Stafford], or Matthew decided he didn’t want to play for the Rams, I’m good,” Kelly shared.

After releasing Daniel Jones in November and with both Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito hitting free agency, the Giants currently don’t have a quarterback on the roster.

The Giants do have the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft and are rumored to have interest in Miami quarterback Cam Ward and Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders as they look to find their franchise quarterback.

The Rams gave the Philadelphia Eagles their toughest test en route to winning Super Bowl LIX when they lost to them 28-23 in the NFC Divisional round.

In that loss, Stafford completed nearly 60% of his passes while throwing for 324 yards and two touchdowns despite less-than-ideal conditions.

Stafford, 36, was good last season. The Rams were 10-6 in his starts, and Stafford completed nearly 66% of his passes for 3,762 yards, while throwing 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

  • Cam Jordan explains why Saints’ head coaching job should be considered attractive

Cam Jordan explains why Saints’ head coaching job should be considered attractive

There’s just one more team in the NFL searching for a head coach, and it happens to be based in the host city for Sunday’s Super Bowl.

It’s an exciting week to be in New Orleans, but the Saints have yet to make an official head coaching hire, making them the only team in the NFL without a leader.

Several other teams searching for a head coach have locked in their guy, including the Chicago Bears (Ben Johnson), New York Jets (Aaron Glenn), Jacksonville Jaguars (Liam Coen) and even the Dallas Cowboys (Brian Schottenheimer).

Many observers have suggested the Saints job may not be considered attractive to the top head coaching candidates.

Don’t tell veteran edge rusher Cam Jordan that.

Jordan, riding along Radio Row on his Segway GT3 Pro, rattled off teammates’ names to explain just how potent a team the Saints could be with the right leader next season.

HOW TO WATCH SUPER BOWL LIX BETWEEN CHIEFS, EAGLES STREAMED ON TUBI

“You look at the Saints, and you think about guys like Rashid Shaheed. You talk about Chris Olave, Alvin Kamara. You look at the gambit of weapons you have on offense, and you say, ‘Well, that could be a potent offense,’” Jordan explained.

“You look at the defensive side. You have Demario Davis, you got me, you got Carl Granderson, you got Khalen Saunders, Bryan Bresee. You got safeties like Tyrann Mathieu. You got Will Harris. You got so many guys that have potential here.

“All you’re missing is a head coach, a DC and an OC, and then you can fill out the rest.”

There is significant buzz suggesting Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore could accept the job once the Super Bowl is over. Moore, an offensive-minded coach and a former quarterback in the NFL, has interviewed multiple times with New Orleans.

The Saints’ job, though, is one that isn’t as sexy as, say, the Bears were. A young quarterback with high-powered offensive weapons and a strong defensive corps was a no-brainer for Johnson when he moved on from the Lions.

However, Jordan thinks his roster can compete with any team in the league, and the Saints’ 5-12 record this season doesn’t reflect their potential. After all, they were considered playoff favorites after Week 2 when they crushed the Cowboys to move to 2-0 after routing the Carolina Panthers to open the season.

But when the injury bug hit the Big Easy, the Saints weren’t able to keep pace, and they started to skid.

“Chris [Olave] goes down, Eric McCoy goes down, our Pro Bowl center, our guards go down,” Jordan said. “When I think about everybody that we had that went down this year, you look around at our 22 starters on offense and defense. It was like you’re starting seven or eight of them? And four of them were on the defensive line. It felt like our defensive line were the only people impervious of getting injured.

“So, you look at that potential alone, and that tells you all you need to know.”

ROLLING AROUND IN STYLE WITH SEGWAY

Jordan was basically the mayor of Radio Row this week. The Saints fan favorite was someone everyone wanted to speak to.

But the little kid inside Jordan couldn’t resist moving around Radio Row from space to space on his Segway GT3 Pro.

Jordan was in walk mode on his scooter, but he let it loose when he wasn’t doing interviews with sport and race mode, which the Saints star says is a ton of fun.

  • Colorado’s Deion Sanders explains aversion to coaching in NFL

Colorado’s Deion Sanders explains aversion to coaching in NFL

Deion Sanders spent nearly a decade and a half playing in the NFL, winning two Super Bowls along the way. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current NFL analyst Troy Aikman joined Sanders for a recent edition of Sanders’ show, “We Got Time Today,” which streams on Tubi.

At one point during the wide-ranging conversation, the pair of former Cowboys stars discussed the possibility of Sanders one day returning to professional football.

Despite his familiarity with the pros, Sanders pointed to the NFL’s modern-day practice style when he revealed what would prevent him from taking a coaching job with any of the league’s 32 franchises.

“That’s the way we practiced,” Sanders said. “I know it’s cute, but I couldn’t coach pro ball. The way they practice, the way they go about it, I couldn’t take it — as a man, and as a football enthusiast. I care about the game. … There’s no way I could allow that to happen on my watch. That would be tough.”

HOW TO WATCH SUPER BOWL LIX BETWEEN CHIEFS, EAGLES STREAMED ON TUBI

Sanders became a media star once he he ended his career. But in recent years, Sanders has focused on coaching at the collegiate level. After a successful three-season run at Jackson State, Sanders took the job at the University of Colorado.

The Buffaloes improved under Sanders in 2024, and the success added fuel to the idea Sanders could soon leave college football for the NFL.

This isn’t the first time Sanders has dismissed the suggestion he would make the leap to the NFL. In 2022, he told “60 Minutes” he “couldn’t coach” at the pro level.

“I couldn’t coach pro ball,” he explained. “It’s not just about fame or money. It’s about the love of the game. The way things are done now, I couldn’t accept it. It would be hard for me to let that happen under my watch.”

During an appearance on “Good Morning America” last month, Sanders was once again asked about his NFL coaching prospects.

“The only way I would consider is to coach my sons,” Sanders said. “Not son. Sons.”

The Cowboys parted ways with head coach Mike McCarthy in January. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed he had a conversation with Sanders during the franchise’s search for its next head coach. Dallas ultimately hired Brian Schottenheimer, but Aikman said it would “make a lot of sense” for Sanders to lead the Cowboys.

“I was asked a lot of questions about how do you think Deion would do?” Aikman recounted. “I said, ‘I think Deion would do great.’ There are a small handful of people that I know that I just simply would not bet against. And Deion is one of those handful of people. He’s proven it at every stop. He’d be successful in the NFL.”

Aikman said he understood how Sanders could make more of an impact at the college level.

“You’re not impressing upon young men the way that you are in college, but to suggest that he wouldn’t be good at it or successful at it, I don’t think people really know Deion’s story. I think that, for Dallas, Deion would’ve been a really good fit because he would’ve commanded the room.

“His personality is such that people would’ve known he was in charge. I think that’s important for any organization to know that the head coach is the one who’s calling the shots and he’s in charge.”

Aikman and Sanders played for the Cowboys when the team won the 1996 Super Bowl.

Sanders coached Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter and sons Shedeur Sanders and Shilo Sanders during his first two seasons at Colorado. He also coached the trio at Jackson State. All three are pursuing pro football careers, with Shedeur and Hunter expected to be first-round picks in April’s NFL Draft.

  • Chiefs’ Andy Reid commits to another year of coaching ahead of Super Bowl rematch with Eagles: ‘I’ll be back’

Chiefs’ Andy Reid commits to another year of coaching ahead of Super Bowl rematch with Eagles: ‘I’ll be back’

Andy Reid has spent the past 26 years as an NFL coach. Next month, he’ll celebrate his 67th birthday.

Reid has built a Hall of Fame-worthy resume, but he will spend this week focusing on the present, not the future.

He will be on the sideline in New Orleans Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles face off in the Super Bowl.

Reid is a three-time Super Bowl-winning head coach and is the only head coach in NFL history who has recorded 100 wins with two different teams. He was the Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach from 1999-2012 and has coached the Chiefs since the 2013 season.

Reid will enter the 2025 regular season as the second-oldest coach in the league, behind only 73-year-old Pete Carroll. The Las Vegas Raiders hired Carroll earlier this month.

Given his age and accomplishments, some have raised questions about when Reid will decide to step away from football. Shortly after the Chiefs arrived in New Orleans for the big game, the longtime head coach addressed the speculation about his coaching future.

“Yes, I’ll be back,” Reid said.

Reid’s statement supports Chiefs owner Clark Hunt’s hopes the coach was not “remotely close” to calling it quits.

“I don’t have a sense that he’s remotely close to wanting to be done,” Hunt recently told reporters. “I think he’s always said he’ll know when the time is right, and I’m sure he’ll share with me before he shares with everyone else — at least, I hope so. I don’t sense he’s anywhere close to being done.”

Don Shula, Bill Belichick and George Halas make up the short list of coaches in NFL history to win 300 regular-season games. Reid is credited with 273 regular-season wins and 28 playoff wins.

But Reid made it clear his plans to return next season were not made in an effort to surpass former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick on the coaching all-time wins list.

“That’s not part of it,” Reid said. “I just enjoy teaching. I don’t get caught up much in the stats or the records. I enjoy being around the guys. I enjoy football, the game. You can’t put in the hours we do and not enjoy it. I love the game.”

Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady withdraws Saints head coaching candidacy: report

The New Orleans Saints parted ways with Dennis Allen in November following a seven-game losing skid. Special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi then received the interim coaching tag.

The NFL franchise’s search for its next head coach remains active, but the team now knows at least one person who will not land the job. Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady has withdrawn his name from consideration for the role, per a report from NFL Media.

Brady prefers to continue guiding the Bills offense, despite New Orleans wanting “to interview Brady a second time,” NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. Brady’s name had also been linked with other head coaching openings during the ongoing hiring cycle.

New Orleans’ 2024 season got off to a promising start, with the team winning its first two games by 37 and 25 points respectively. But, the ensuing losing streak prompted Saints ownership to make an in-season coaching change.

PETE CARROLL SET TO BECOME RAIDERS HEAD COACH: REPORTS

“Dennis has been part of our organization for many years,” team owner Gayle Benson said in a statement shortly after the franchise announced Allen’s firing. “He is highly regarded within the NFL. He has been extremely loyal and professional and most importantly an excellent football coach for us. All of this makes today very tough for me and our organization. However, this decision is something that I felt we needed to make at this time. I wish nothing but the best in the future for Dennis and his family. He will always be considered in the highest regard by me and everyone within our organization.”

Allen ended his head coaching tenure in New Orleans with an 18-25 record. Allen spent seven seasons as New Orleans’ defensive coordinator before succeeding Sean Payton as the franchise’s head coach. Allen is now a top candidate for the Chicago Bears defensive coordinator role, ESPN reported.

Payton, who guided the Saints to the franchise’s lone Super Bowl title, turned to broadcasting in 2022 after stepping down from his head coaching position. He returned to the sideline in 2023 when he was named the next head coach of the Denver Broncos.

Rizzi, along with New York Giants defensive coordinator Mike Kafka and Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver have all completed interviews with the Saints amid the wide-ranging head coaching search. Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellan Moore participated in a virtual interview last week, the team announced.

In his second season as the Bills playcaller, Brady helped star quarterback Josh Allen have arguably the best season of his career. Allen, who was recently named an NFL MVP finalist, threw 28 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions during the regular season. He did not throw an interception in the two postseason games he’s played in thus far.

Jaguars’ Liam Coen texted Baker Mayfield he was staying with Bucs before taking head coaching job: report

Liam Coen texted Baker Mayfield that he was staying with the Buccaneers as offensive coordinator on Tuesday, according to ESPN.

On Friday, the Jacksonville Jaguars officially announced Coen as their new head coach, which came after a roller coaster of a week.

Coen also texted head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Jason Licht on Tuesday that he would be staying with the Bucs, according to the report.

After texting the Bucs’ brass, Coen then withdrew himself from consideration from the Jaguars head coaching job on Wednesday.

The Buccaneers were prepared to make Coen the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the NFL.

However, the Jaguars then parted ways with their general manager, Trent Baalke, on Wednesday afternoon. Jaguars owner Shad Khan then directly reached out to Coen to see whether he would reconsider taking the head coaching job.

On Thursday, Coen was in Jacksonville for an in-person interview and was eventually hired.

But the Bucs couldn’t get in touch with Coen or his agent, and they began to realize that he was unreachable because he was in Jacksonville interviewing for the job, the report said.

The Bucs averaged 29.5 points per game in the regular season, and Mayfield threw a career-high 41 touchdowns en route to winning the NFC South.

The Jaguars went 4-13 last season, with Lawrence missing time due to injury, leading Khan to fire head coach Doug Pederson and eventually Baalke after the season.

Nick Saban is arguably the greatest college football coach of all time, having won six national championships with Alabama and one while he was at LSU.

Saban, who finished his career with 292 wins, does not seem to carry a long list of regrets over the course of his career. He left coaching on his own terms last year following an incredibly successful era with the Crimson Tide.

He did, however, admit in a recent interview there was at least one thing he wished he could have back – jumping from LSU to coach the Miami Dolphins. Saban famously left the Tigers after winning a national championship to coach the Dolphins for two seasons. He then claimed he would not take the Alabama job but eventually did so anyway.

He said on “The Pivot” leaving LSU for the NFL was his “biggest mistake.”

“I think sometimes you have to learn about yourself,” he told LSU alumnus Ryan Clark, ex-Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder and former NFL star running back Fred Taylor. “And you might think things … When I left LSU, that was probably ‘professionally’ the biggest mistake that I ever made,” he admitted.

“Not because we didn’t have success in Miami. I enjoyed coaching in Miami. I found out in that experience that I like coaching college better, because you can develop players personally, academically, athletically and all that a little more than pro ball, even though I loved the status of coaching in pro football and the kind of guys you coach, and you’re coaching in the best league against the best players, I loved all that.”

Saban added that his agent, Jimmy Sexton, talked to him about leaving LSU. Saban said Sexton posed the question, “Do you want to be Bear Bryant or Vince Lombardi in terms of his legacy?” Saban said he answered he wanted to be more like Bryant but chose to go the NFL route anyway.
