America’s chicken and egg shortage needs fixing

White House National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett details how the Trump team is working with Congress to advance the president’s economic agenda and comments on the continued impact of ‘Bidenflation’ on ‘Kudlow.’

President Donald Trump’s Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins was confirmed Thursday, and fixing America’s chicken and egg crisis is among her top four priorities.

Rollins, during her confirmation hearing, indicated she’s been in touch with several Republican agriculture commissioners on the situation, which could be among the worst in decades.

“I think there’s no doubt that the all-of-government approach, working with the stakeholder community but also the state and local officials, is going to be extremely important” to address food security, she said in answer to a question from Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich.

More than 148 million birds have been euthanized, per CBS, as the avian bird flu ravages the U.S., driving up overall food inflation.

Egg prices jumped 53% compared to last January and are up 15.2% from just December, according to the latest consumer price index, released Wednesday.

“It turns out [former President] Joe Biden didn’t have an avian flu strategy at all, so now nobody can buy an egg anywhere in the grocery store because Joe Biden killed all the chickens,” said Kevin Hassett, National Economic Council Director for President Trump, during an interview with FOX Business’ Larry Kudlow. Hassett is optimistic that Rollins can do better.

The average price of a dozen Large Grade A eggs is nearing $5.00, as tracked by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicted that egg prices, which can vary significantly from month to month, will increase by more than 20% this year. FOX Business’ inquiries to the USDA were not immediately returned.

Bernt Nelson, an economist with the American Farm Bureau Foundation, recently told FOX Business that the avian influenza outbreak, which began in 2022, is far from over. In December, there were over 18 million birds affected, which he said led to “bare grocery shelves in some places and widespread higher prices.”

The disease affects domestic chickens, turkeys, ducks and other fowl. One human fatality has been linked to the bird flu outbreak in Louisiana.

Costco, Kroger and Whole Foods are among the grocers limiting how many cartons of eggs shoppers can purchase.

Waffle House, a Southern breakfast-food chain, added a temporary 50 cent per egg surcharge earlier this month.

McDonald’s plans more chicken offerings

McDonald’s franchise owner Scott Rodrick says his business has experienced ‘cost pressure’ since California’s minimum wage increase targeting fast food franchises on ‘Maria Bartiromo’s Wall Street.’

McDonald’s is looking to further ramp up its chicken business through more offerings.

CEO Chris Kempczinski indicated Monday during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call that McDonald’s was very bullish about its chicken portfolio and shared some offerings in the pipeline.

“This year, there is incredible energy for the return of Snack Wraps in the U.S. along with a few other markets,” he told analysts and investors.

McDonald’s has plans to introduce a “new chicken strip offering” in the U.S. too, according to Kempczinksi.

MCDONALD’S TO ROLL OUT SHAMROCK SHAKE WITH HELP OF UNCLE O’GRIMACEY

The fast-food giant revealed late last year that it would add the Snack Wrap back to its menus. It has been about eight years since McDonald’s offered the fan-favorite in the U.S.

“This has a cult following,” McDonald’s U.S. President Joe Erlinger told “Good Morning America” in December. “I get so many emails into my inbox about this product. It will be back in 2025.”

When asked on the earnings call about timing and details for the snack wraps and chicken strips, Kempczinski was tight-lipped.

“We do have, I think, some very exciting food news, food innovation coming in the U.S., but my U.S. team would kill me if I gave any more details about the when and the exact specifics of how we’re going to plan on doing that, but certainly expect that to come online later in the year,” he said.

Kempczinski also said the fast-food giant will “continue to pulse in the Chicken Big Mac as a limited-time-only offering over time.”

McDonald’s offered the Chicken Big Mac – a sandwich made with two chicken patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese and pickles between two buns – at U.S. restaurants for a limited time in October. Restaurants in other countries have sold it in the past as well.

The Chicken Big Mac “helped generate chicken market-share growth in France and the U.S. with positive incrementality” last year, according to the McDonald’s CEO.

McDonald’s is also bringing the McCrispy to more and more markets. That menu item crossed the threshold to become one of the fast-food giant’s billion-dollar brands in 2023, FOX Business previously reported.

Restaurants in over 70 markets currently sell the McCrispy, with McDonald’s planning to make it available in “nearly all markets” by the end of the year, Kempczinski said.

“We’re excited about the significant opportunity we see within our chicken portfolio and see the potential to add another point of chicken market share by the end of 2026,” he told analysts and investors.

MCDONALD’S TAKES MASSIVE SALES HIT FROM E. COLI OUTBREAK

McDonald’s generated nearly $6.39 billion in total revenue in the fourth quarter. Its quarterly net income, meanwhile, came in at almost $2.02 billion.

For the full year, the fast-food giant’s revenues were $25.92 billion, and its net income was $8.22 billion.

During Super Bowl LIX, fans will eat a staggering amount of chicken wings

Super Bowl Sunday is slated to be a big day for chicken wings.

During Super Bowl LIX, Americans are poised to gobble up 1.47 billion chicken wings, some 20 million more than last year, according to a forecast from the National Chicken Council (NCC).

The trade association’s estimate came ahead of the highly anticipated Big Game, when the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will go head-to-head in New Orleans for the NFL championship title.

Those wings “would stretch to and from GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. to Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa. about 63 times,” the NCC said.

In the lead-up to the Super Bowl, the playoffs were a boon for chicken wing sales. They rose 12% nationwide for the four weeks ending Jan. 19 “versus the prior period,” the NCC reported, citing Circana retail data.

Over two-thirds of American consumers tuning into the Big Game on Sunday plan to spend money on food and beverages for the occasion, according to a recent LendingTree survey.

Buffalo wings are the most-popular snack for Super Bowl LIX in 32 states, according to Casino.org.

Some Wegmans frozen chicken nuggets contaminated with bone fragments says FSIS

Some frozen Wegmans chicken nuggets may be contaminated with bone fragments, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) warned in a Monday public health alert.

The public health alert about the “possible extraneous material contamination” comes just a handful of days after a recall of the potentially-affected 46-ounce packages of Wegmans Family Pack Fully Cooked Breaded Chicken Breast with Rib Meat nuggets by New York-based grocery store chain. The nuggets, made in late August of last year, are not on store shelves.

The FSIS said it released the public health alert to “ensure that consumers are aware that this product should not be consumed.”

The potentially contaminated Wegmans chicken nugget packages can be identified by a best-by date of Aug. 26, 2025, and the establishment number “P-33944,” according to the health agency housed within the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers,” the alert said. “Consumers who have purchased this product are urged to not consume it. This product should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”

FOX Business reached out to the grocery store chain for comment.

No consumers have reported injuries from eating the Wegmans chicken nuggets. However, Wegmans has fielded “multiple” complaints from consumers about finding pieces of bone, the FSIS said.

The grocery store chain said on its website that it will give a full refund to consumers that return packages of the potentially contaminated chicken nuggets.
