Bud Light exec reveals the ‘four things’ that made this year’s Super Bowl ad a success

Bud Light’s Super Bowl ad starring comedian Shane Gillis, rapper Post Malone and football great Peyton Manning has garnered the brewer rave reviews online, and a senior executive attributes this success to “putting our fans first.”

“When beginning the process of developing our Super Bowl ad, we prioritized the core components of what makes a Bud Light commercial,” Bud Light Senior VP of Marketing Todd Allen told Fox News Digital.

Bud Light’s ad “Big Men on Cul-De-Sac” featured Gillis and Malone as suburban homeowners who come to a neighbor’s rescue after he “accidentally threw a lame party.” Together, with the help of Bud Light and Peyton Manning, the duo transform the party into an event so raucous that Gillis has to tell his neighbors to settle down lest he invoke the wrath of the HOA board.

The ad came seventh in USA Today’s ad meter, which had Super Bowl viewers rate their favorite ads from the game. It was the fourth most watched ad of the Super Bowl, Variety reported.

Allen attributes the ad’s resonance with viewers to four things: “Putting our fans first, delivering Bud Light’s classic humor, engaging an A-list cast who are both brand partners and genuine fans of the brand, and, finally, centering the spot around one of our platforms that celebrates easy enjoyment.”

“We wanted consumers to be able to see themselves, their friends or their neighbors in this year’s spot,” Allen said.

The ad won the beer maker praise from industry observer and publisher of Beer Business Daily Publisher Harry Schuhmacher, who told Fox News Digital that Bud Light “did all the right things” in the BMOC ad.

“Bud Light has always been associated with a blue-collar working class. You know, relaxation, barbecuing, those, you know, country music, those type of deal situations and occasions, so yeah, it makes much more natural sense. They’ve done all the right things.”

The ad was a tonal departure from their controversial partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Longtime Bud Light drinkers revolted after the company partnered with Mulvaney, causing sales revenue to plunge.

However, BMOC appears to show that Bud Light has learned its lessons, with wholesalers praising the ad as a return to form.

Philadelphia Eagles rookie Cooper DeJean walked away from Friday’s Super Bowl celebrations with lasting memories and possibly a scar.

The star cornerback had a notable gash above his left eye during the Super Bowl parade in downtown Philadelphia. But unlike general manager Howie Roseman, who was hit with an errant beer can, DeJean’s injury was self-inflicted.

“Might be the best day of my life. I got a little battle scar going on,” DeJean told FOX Sports in an interview during the parade route.

“I hit myself with this big a– chain,” he said with a laugh, referring to the oversize Bud Light chain hanging around his neck.

One Philly fan seemed to track down the moment the injury occurred – it appeared to be when DeJean was spraying the crowd with beer.

The fan shared the picture with DeJean on X, and he confirmed.

“Yes. Battle scars. I love this city,” he said in response.

DeJean, drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft, had an immediate impact in his first NFL season, which was headlined by a stellar performance in the Eagles’ 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

On his 22nd birthday, he picked off Patrick Mahomes to score a touchdown and became the first player in Super Bowl history to intercept a pass or score a touchdown on his birthday.

Images showed the football executive with a large gash in his forehead, which was later revealed to be the result of an errant beer can thrown his way.

At the final destination of Friday’s parade, Roseman shouted to fans, “I bleed for this city!”

Saquon Barkley gifts Eagles offensive linemen trucks of Bud Light after his record-breaking campaign

Saquon Barkley did all of the running, but he knows he had some assists during his record-breaking campaign.

During Super Bowl LIX, the Philadelphia Eagles running back set the all-time record for the most rushing yards in a single season, including the playoffs, with 2,504 yards on the ground.

During an appearance this week on “The Tonight Show,” Barkley said that his offensive linemen had to be in attendance — but ahead of their Super Bowl parade, he perhaps gave the best gift of all.

Barkley gave each of his offensive linemen their own truckload of Bud Light.

Barkley dominated all season, much to New York Giants fans’ chagrin. After the Giants opted to move on from him, he became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards during the regular season. Had he not rested in Week 18, he very well could have broken former running back Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record.

CITY OF PHILADELPHIA ASKS EAGLES FANS TO ‘CELEBRATE RESPONSIBLY’ AT PARADE AFTER SLEW OF CHAOTIC TURNS

The superstar running back joined the Eagles on a three-year deal this past offseason, and it’s proving to be perhaps their best move in recent memory. Out of his 20 games played, he rushed for 100-plus yards 12 times and eclipsed the 200-yard mark twice.

His regular season earned him Offensive Player of the Year honors — it was the first time that running backs earned the award in back-to-back seasons since 2005 and 2006, when Shaun Alexander and LaDanian Tomlinson won the hardware, respectively (Christian McCaffrey won it last year).

  • Bud Light exec reveals the ‘four things’ that made this year’s Super Bowl ad a success

Bud Light Super Bowl ad featuring Shane Gillis did ‘all the right things’

Bud Light’s Super Bowl ad featuring comedian Shane Gillis, singer Post Malone and football great Peyton Manning has garnered the company praise from beer industry insiders and observers, with one expert saying the company is doing “all the right things” after the distiller’s Dylan Mulvaney disaster.

The ad had Gillis and Malone playing the “Big Men of the Cul-de-sac,” two middle-aged suburban homeowners who are called upon to save a neighbor’s “boring party” by launching cans of Bud Light, which serve as invitations, at their neighbors’ doorsteps via leaf blower. The neighbors then flock to “the end of the cul-de-sac” for a raucous party that draws the former Colts quarterback, who admires how many Bud Lights Gillis and Malone’s custom cooler can fit.

Col. John Saputo, an Anheuser Bush/InBev beer distributor with operations in Ohio and Florida, told Fox News Digital that Bud Light’s ad shows that the company is getting “back to our roots.”

“This ad is one of the best I have seen in my 40-year career,” Saputo said. “This ad opens up the Bud Light brand to all consumers and invites Bud Light into every home in America as an approachable and accepted American Lager.”

Bud Light has faced extreme backlash after partnering with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in 2023. Customers, who felt betrayed by the once all-American brand injecting far left politics into their advertising, revolted, causing sales to plummet.

Beer Business Daily Publisher Harry Schuhmacher told Fox News Digital that Bud Light bringing Gillis, Post Malone and Manning on was the “right thing to do to reengage with their natural audience.”

“Bud Light has always been associated with humorous ads lighthearted, funny buddy ads, and they’re getting back to that,” he said.

Audiences appear to be responding well to the ad, it was voted the seventh top Super Bowl commercial on USA Today’s Ad Meter. Overall, Anheuser-Busch had four ads in the meter’s top ten.

Schuhmacher said that partners like Gillis and Manning were a much better fit for Bud Light’s brand than Mulvaney, and that reversing course could help the ailing brand staunch the bleeding from its ongoing sales plunge.

“Bud Light has always been associated with a blue-collar working class. You know relaxation, barbecuing, those you know country music those type of deal situations and occasion so yeah, it makes much more natural sense. They’ve done all the right things,” he said.

Bud Light year-over-year sales were down nearly 30% for the week ending January 20, according to numbers provided to FOX Business by Bump Williams Consulting. Schuhmacher conceded that there many customers who will “never return” to Bud Light, but feels that the company can make inroads with a new pool of consumers who just turned 21. Col. Saputo was also optimistic about Bud Light’s future prospects.

Ultimately, Schuhmacher believes that Bud Light’s changes go deeper than just the level of marketing, and reflect a broader change in the company’s corporate mentality to better align with the views of their natural customers.

“No other brand in all of consumer goods has learned their lesson and more than Bud Light has, I mean that Bud Light really became the face of DEI and woke,” he said.

Bud Light hasn’t recovered from Mulvaney controversy, ex-Anheuser-Busch exec says

Bud Light has not yet recuperated from the Dylan Mulvaney controversy, according to a former Anheuser-Busch executive.

“They haven’t at all [recovered],” former Anheuser-Busch President of Operations Anson Frericks said Tuesday during an interview on FOX Business’ “Varney & Co.” Tuesday.

Despite companies backing away from pushing politics through DEI and ESG policies, the damage to Bud Light is still taking its toll as “they continue to shed customers,” Frericks said.

BUD LIGHT SALES STILL SUFFERING IN US A YEAR AFTER CONTROVERSY

The beer brand stumbled into controversy in 2023 following a partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The tag team with the influencer sparked outrage from consumers, resulting in a drop in sales, customers and shareholder value. The company also saw itself being surpassed in sales by Michelob Ultra and Modelo Especial.

Bud Light sales were down 29.9% year-over-year for the week ending Jan. 20, compared with the same period last year, according to the latest numbers provided to FOX Business by Bump Williams Consulting, which analyzed NielsenIQ data.

“I think that’s one of the most interesting parts about this story is that they lost 30% of their customers,” he pointed out. “Millions of customers, billions of dollars of shareholder value over the last couple of years.”

Bud Light’s 2023 partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney saw consumer outrage and an exodus of customers. Former Anheuser-Busch executive Anson Frericks believes the beer brand has yet to recover from the controversy.  (Instagram/Fox News / Fox News)

The former executive noted how the partnership impacted stocks and how the brand’s efforts to recover with Super Bowl ads would not relieve the pain.

“They are advertising Bud Light. And candidly, the commercials are actually pretty good,” he said. “They have Shane Gillis who’s about the opposite of Dylan Mulvaney. You couldn’t have maybe someone more opposite. They have Post Malone, but the problem is they’ve lost a lot of their customers.”

BUD LIGHT STILL REELING FROM ‘UNFORCED ERROR’ AS MODELO ESPECIAL AND MICHELOB ULTRA BOTH SURPASSED IT

He also pointed out the dilemma Bud Light faces regarding its vision.

“Their customers are asking them, ‘hey, what is Bud Light going to be moving forward? Is it gonna be more than Shane Gillis and fun in football, or is it Dylan Mulvaney?’”

“Until the company really comes back and says clearly what Bud Light is going to be? I don’t know if any of their loyal customers are going to come back,” he added.
