    Tiger Woods to play in Genesis Invitational, marking return to competition for first time since British Open

    For the first time since the British Open in July, Tiger Woods is back in action on a golf course.

    Woods, 49, committed Friday to playing 18 holes at the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines. 

    It will be the first time Woods will be competing since he had a microdiscectomy in September to alleviate pain in his legs. It was the sixth surgery he has undergone on his lower back.

    It is also the first time Woods will be playing since the loss of his mother, Kultida Woods, who died Tuesday at the age of 80. 

    Normally, the Genesis Invitational is at the Riviera Country Club, but the tournament was moved to Torrey Pines due to the wildfires that devastated the Los Angeles community. 

    Woods has had a lot of success during his illustrious career at Torrey Pines, with eight wins on the public course alongside the Pacific Ocean.

    Torrey Pines is the course where Woods last finished in the top 10 at a PGA Tour event, when he was in a tie for ninth at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2020. 

    There is no cut at the Genesis Invitational, meaning Woods will be walking for all four days no matter his performance. 

    The last time Woods played four rounds was at last year’s Masters, when he broke the tournament record for most cuts made at the prestigious major with his 24th consecutive cut made.

    Woods missed the cut at the other three major tournaments he played in. 

    The 15-time major champion has been competing in the indoor TGL league, which debuted Jan. 7, 2025. 

    The Genesis Invitational begins Feb. 13 and runs through Feb. 16.

    Sri Lanka National Day History

    Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, gained its independence from British rule on February 4, 1948. The island had been under colonial control for over four centuries, first by the Portuguese from 1505–1658, then the Dutch from 1658–1796, and finally the British from 1796–1948. The British unified the island under one administration in 1815 after annexing the Kingdom of Kandy, the last independent monarchy. By the early 20th century, Sri Lankan nationalist movements grew stronger. Organizations like the Ceylon National Congress played a crucial role in advocating for self-rule. Influential leaders included D. S. Senanayake, who later became the country’s first Prime Minister.

    On February 4, 1948, Ceylon became an independent dominion within the British Commonwealth, with D. S. Senanayake as the first Prime Minister. The country retained the British monarch as the ceremonial head of state, represented locally by a Governor-General.

    A British woman is accused of disguising herself to pose as at least 14 people while taking citizenship tests in the United Kingdom.

    The unnamed 61-year-old woman used an array of wigs and disguises to impersonate male and female applicants, the U.K. Home Office said. 

    “These fraudsters lead to people wrongly being granted the right to remain, putting the public at risk,” the agency said on social media.

    During her arrest, Immigration Enforcement officers seized several false documents and the wigs, which were believed to have been used in the scheme.

    She is believed to have carried out the scheme at multiple test centers across the United Kingdom between June 2022 and August 2023, authorities said.

    Immigration enforcement criminal and financial investigation inspector Phillip Parr said a “complex investigation” had “put a stop to this dangerous scheme,” Sky News reported. 

    “This individual is believed to have orchestrated a pre-meditated plan to avoid detection, meticulously selecting disguises and test center locations across the country to evade the authorities,” he told the outlet.
