Popular brand of pet food recalled due to salmonella concerns

A pet food brand is recalling nearly 6,000 pounds of its products due to concerns about salmonella.

Blue Ridge Beef is recalling 5,700 pounds of its Natural Mix due to salmonella contamination, according to a news release published by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Specifically, the brand is recalling the 2-pound logs of its Natural Mix with a lot number of N25/12/31 and an UPC number is 854298001054. The recall began after the North Carolina Department of Agriculture’s Food and Drug Protection Laboratory tested the product and found that it contained salmonella.

The dog food was sold in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee and Rhode Island.

The recall comes months after Blue Ridge Beef recalled 9,600 pounds of its puppy food, citing a similar salmonella contamination. According to the statement, the risk of salmonella can pose a threat to both animals and humans.

“Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products,” the release explained.

“Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever,” the statement added. “Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.”

According to Blue Ridge Beef’s website, the brand provides “the best known source of protein, appropriate natural nutrition for dogs and cats of all ages.”

“Since 1979, Blue Ridge Beef has been committed to providing the best nutritional quality raw food, price, and service,” the site reads. “More people are realizing the benefits in feeding real food to their pets of all ages.”

Blue Ridge Beef advised that animals suffering from a salmonella infection may suffer a range of symptoms ranging from lethargy to diarrhea, while others may only have a decreased appetite.

“Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans,” the statement read. “If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.”

Blue Ridge Beef asks customers who purchased the impacted products to return or destroy the contaminated food.

CEO of water brand donates salary to LA fire victims, reduces income to $1

Jordan Bass, CEO and co-founder of Hop Wtr, a non-alcoholic beverage brand, reduced his salary to $1 to provide immediate financial support to his employees, first responders and Los Angeles community members who were affected by the wildfires in January.

Headquartered in Los Angeles, Hop Wtr team members were forced to evacuate their homes, uncertain of what they might return to.

“Work took a backseat during that period,” Bass told FOX Business. “We’re a small company, so I have personal relationships with everyone in the company. I know all of our people. I know their families.”

Amid evacuations, Bass ensured the safety of his employees by quickly coordinating forms of mass communication to team members living in and out of California. With Bass’ salary reduction, he was able to provide incremental funds for affected employees. This included reimbursement for air purifiers.

“We really care about each other pretty deeply,” Bass said. “I’m not a billionaire. We don’t have a big philanthropy department, but we felt really compelled to help. I hope this inspires other CEOs to contribute if they can.”

Despite having urgently evacuated his own family amid the raging wildfires, Bass said his team immediately mobilized and donated 10,000 cans of water to first responders, fire stations, fire camps and evacuation centers.

“We realized we had a product that people needed, and we felt a real calling to help,” Bass told FOX Business.

“I just felt like I wanted to do more,” Bass said. “It wasn’t enough and the quickest way for me to do that was lower my salary and contribute those funds to help our employees get through this situation, help them with recovery, help continue to get clean water to those in need and to help with the rebuilding efforts.”

As part of their continued efforts to help amid the LA fires, Hop Wtr partnered with All Hands and Hearts, a volunteer-powered nonprofit, to disperse both water and financial support. Furthermore, Hop Wtr supported community outreach by establishing communication channels for people who were in need. The brand also launched a fundraising campaign for customers which garnered thousands of dollars.

“It’s really amazing to see that,” Bass said.

“I believe that as a business leader, it’s imperative to use my business platform for good and this has been absolutely devastating on many people,” he said. “I call on other CEOs to do the same and use your company, your salary, your platform to help with this recovery.”

The states exempt from the distribution were Alaska, North Dakota, Wyoming, Louisiana and Wyoming. According to Gerber, the products “were distributed nationwide via the internet and to distribution centers and retail stores in the following states and territories.”

The teething products came in two flavors: strawberry apple and banana. The recall and discontinuation is only limited to those two flavors.

The release stressed that parents who purchased the chewing sticks “should not feed this product to their child, and can return the product to the retailer where it was purchased for a refund.”

“We are working with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on this recall and will cooperate with them fully,” Gerber added. “We sincerely apologize for any concern or inconvenience this action represents to parents, caregivers and retail customers.”

It is rare for Gerber to recall products, but it has happened in the past. In 2023, Gerber baby formula that was recalled for potentially containing harmful bacteria was mistakenly shipped to dozens of retailers after the recall was initiated.

Swirled with liquor-infused grape jelly, the peanut butter ice cream combined with Chica~Chida was blended to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Each pint contains 5% ABV.

“When I was briefed on a potential collaboration, I was super excited about it,” Hirsch said. “It was a no-brainer for us.”

Chica Chida is crafted in Tequila, Mexico, using espadin, a species of agave.

“It is not technically a tequila, because we’re not using blue agave,” Hirsch told FOX Business.

The unique flavor was crafted as a product designated for the shooter category, though the taste has sparked creativity among mixologists.
