Chiefs’ DeAndre Hopkins complains about ‘touchy calls’ after Super Bowl LIX loss

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had a few words about how Super Bowl LIX was called after the team’s 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

Two penalties early in the game drew attention from social media. First, it was the offensive pass interference call on Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown, then it was an unnecessary roughness call on Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie on Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert.

“It’s my first year being with the Chiefs and I saw a lot of things in the media about the refs, but what are you all going to say now about the refs and us?” Hopkins told reporters. “There was a lot of touchy calls. Are you going to report that? Are you going to talk about the refs now?”

Hopkins had two catches on five targets for 18 yards and a touchdown. He did have a massive drop in the game as he appeared to slip and fall as he was running his route. He then dropped a pass that could have gone for a ton of yards and possibly build momentum.

EAGLES’ JALEN HURTS NAMED SUPER BOWL LIX MVP: ‘GOD IS GOOD’

It was that kind of night for the Chiefs. The team had 275 total yards on 49 plays. The team picked up some extra yards in the second half after the Eagles went up 40-6.

Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes was 21-of-32 with 257 yards, three touchdown passes, two interceptions and a fumble.

Eagles’ Jalen Hurts named Super Bowl LIX MVP: ‘God is good’

Jalen Hurts has faced his fair share of doubters during his football career.

He overcame getting benched at halftime of the championship game when he was at Alabama. He later transferred to Oklahoma, where he regained the starting quarterback role. NFL teams passed on him in the first round of the 2020 draft, but the Philadelphia Eagles took a chance on him in the second round.

He started off his professional football career in Philly as a backup. Even when he did get the opportunity to become an NFL starter, many still questioned whether Hurts had the tools to be a star. Hurts put all of those doubts to bed on Sunday when he was named the Super Bowl MVP after he led the Eagles to victory.

While Hurts wasn’t asked to do too much on a dominant defensive night for Philadelphia, he came through at nearly every opportunity when he was needed as the calm he has shown throughout his career was evident on football’s biggest stage.

He finished the game with 221 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also was credited with a rushing touchdown during the 40-22 win over the Chiefs that avenged a Super Bowl loss two years ago against Kansas City.

Nevertheless, in the seasons since that Super Bowl loss, some critics still questioned whether Hurts was holding back the Eagles offense.

Aside from an early interception against the Chiefs — his first since Week 10 against the Dallas Cowboys — Hurts was nearly flawless against the Chiefs defense.

Moments after the clock struck zero, Hurts reflected on his personal journey.

“God is good. He is greater than all the highs and the lows. I think personally… myself I’ve just been able to use every experience and learn from it… the good, the bad, all of it… using it as fuel to pursue my own greatness. I couldn’t do any of these things without the guys around me. We’ve got a special group this year. We were able to learn from the past,” Hurts told FOX Sports.

Hurts is now just the fourth quarterback ever to lose his first Super Bowl start and go on to win one as a starter later in his career, joining Hall of Famers John Elway, Bob Griese and Len Dawson.

The Eagles won the franchise’s first-ever Vince Lombardi Trophy when the team defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII.

Chaos fills Philadelphia as Eagles fans celebrate rout of Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX

With the Philadelphia Eagles blowing out the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, the party was on earlier than expected on Broad Street.

The Birds stopped the Chiefs’ quest for three consecutive titles with their 40-22 victory in the big game, good for their second Lombardi Trophy in franchise history.

Well before the game ended, Eagles fans took to the streets of Philadelphia to start the party.

The SEPTA announced that several bus routes were suspended due to “anticipated large crowds and streets closures.”

Well, they anticipated correctly, as fans were quick to get in their cars and celebrate.

Right around when the game ended, fireworks went off.

A DJ tried to set up shop, but he was stopped by police.

Another group of fans were spotted burning a Chiefs jersey and chanting “F— Taylor Swift,” who dates Travis Kelce. Swift was booed by a heavy Eagles fan contingent at the Super Bowl itself.

The celebration for the NFC championship game resulted in mayhem with several arrests, injuries, and even one person, an 18-year-old, dying after falling off a lamp post.

But, that didn’t stop fans from trying it on Sunday night.

The Chiefs, one of the best offenses in the NFL this season, and a team that has obvious history in this game over the past two years, had just 34 total yards of offense in the first half as the Eagles defense was thriving against the offensive line.

Patrick Mahomes was never comfortable, and it showed as they punted their first three possessions. Mahomes threw two picks, one of which was taken to the house by rookie Cooper DeJean. The Eagles defense sacked Mahomes six times.

Trump mocks Taylor Swift, Chiefs after she was booed during Super Bowl LIX

President Donald Trump made history as the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl on Sunday, and stole the show away from Taylor Swift. He then made sure to mock her about it after the game.

Trump received a raucous cheer from the Superdome crowd when he was shown on-screen during the national anthem, while the fans booed Swift immensely when she was shown on the jumbotron during the game. Swift also had to watch her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, suffer a crushing 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, which was the team she grew up rooting for.

Trump mocked her and the team in a post on Truth Social after the game. Trump credited followers of his “Make America Great Again” movement for the boos.

“The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift. She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!” Trump wrote.

Trump has been at odds with Swift over the last year amid his 2024 presidential campaign.

After Swift announced her endorsement for Kamala Harris for president on Sept. 10, Trump appeared on “Fox & Friends” the next morning and insisted that he liked the wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Brittany Mahomes, much better than Swift. Brittany Mahomes suggested support for Trump through social media activity.

Trump even sent a post on Truth Social that read “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” days after Swift’s endorsement of Harris.

For NFL fans, Swift became a contentious figure over the last year after her relationship with Kelce went public in September 2023. She began attending most Chiefs games, and whenever she was there, NFL broadcast cameras panned to her multiple times per game.

Swift was credited for bringing a wave of new fans to the Chiefs and NFL as a whole, especially women fans. But a lot of longtime NFL fans became nauseated by the constant visuals of Swift at games.

Swift appeared at last year’s Super Bowl and witnessed Kelce and the Chiefs win that game. Then, this year, her appearances at NFL games continued, much to the agony of fans who had become sick of seeing and hearing about her.

Swift also was noticeably distant from Brittany Mahomes at multiple games this past season amid controversy over Mahomes’ Trump support and Swift’s support for Harris. However, they continued to show public affection in other ways, including a group dinner with Kelce and Patrick Mahomes just days before the Super Bowl.

And while Trump praised the Mahomes family, Kelce and even picked the Chiefs to win the game, he had no reservations about mocking all of them with his Truth Social post on Sunday night.

But Trump didn’t stop there.

He also spoke out against the NFL’s new kick-off format, which he has been a vocal critic of since the first week of the season.

“The worst part of the Super Bowl, by far, was watching the Kickoff where, as the ball is sailing through the air, the entire field is frozen, stiff. College Football does not do it, and won’t! Whose idea was it to ruin the Game?” Trump wrote.

Chiefs fans react to team’s failed 3rd consecutive Super Bowl title bid

The Eagles got off to a strong start on Sunday and built a 24-0 first half lead in Super Bowl LIX. Philadelphia would never look back and cruised to a 40-22 rout of the Kansas City Chiefs — the team that had won the two previous Super Bowls.

Three-time Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes faced pressure throughout the game, with Eagles defenders sacking the quarterback six times. Mahomes also threw a pick-six in the first half which brought the score to 17-0 following a successful point after attempt.

Chiefs fans have had their fair share of celebrations in recent years, and many believed the team could pull off the first-ever streak of three straight Super Bowl titles. Instead, the Eagles earned the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy for just the second time in franchise history.

The Chiefs’ performance on Sunday sparked feelings of disappointment for some of the team’s supporters.

“Everybody is very somber. A lot of people have left. Once it started going downhill, but the true fans are going to stick it out with us,” one person told WHO-13 news in reference to a local watch party where groups of Chiefs fans gathered.

“And I’m disappointed in the Chiefs’ fans that left. I’m like, you know, if you’re a fan, be a fan. Stay true to the end,” another fan told the outlet. “A lot of people left early. So, I feel like those people shouldn’t be allowed back here in the future.”

Pictures from a watch party at Kansas City’s Power and Light District showed a sparse number of fans remaining with just under ten minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of the game.

Earlier in the game, some Chiefs fans did seem to try to hold on the hope that Kansas City would be able to manufacture a comeback.

“If Patrick Mahomes wants to be known as the GOAT, he’ll have to do what Tom Brady did and have a miracle comeback to win the Super Bowl. Tom Brady had 28-3 Can Patrick Mahomes have 24-0?” a social media user opined on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Brady helped the New England Patriots overcome a 25-point deficit in an overtime win over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI.

Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl winner and FOX Sports lead analyst, was in the broadcast booth for Super Bowl LIX. Lead FOX NFL voice Kevin Burkhardt along with reporters Erin Andrews and Tom Rinaldi and rules analyst Mike Pereira, made up the rest of the broadcast team.

Eagles’ Jalen Hurts, Nick Sirianni praise God after winning Super Bowl LIX: ‘Thanks to Him’

Two of the biggest faces in Philadelphia both pointed to their faith after the Eagles earned a dominant win in Super Bowl LIX.

The Birds got their second Lombardi Trophy on Sunday night with a 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, stopping their quest for three Super Bowl trophies in a row.

FOX broadcaster Tom Rinaldi met with head coach Nick Sirianni shortly after the clock hit triple zeroes, and Sirianni gave credit to the Lord for the victory.

“God’s blessed us very much,” he said. “He gave us all the talents to be able to get here, so first and foremost, thanks to Him. … Thank God, thank you Jesus.”

During the trophy presentation, he said to Terry Bradshaw, “All glory to God.”

Darius Slay also thanked his “Lord and Savior” when speaking with the NFL Network after the game.

In speaking with Erin Andrews, Jalen Hurts, the game’s MVP, said, “God is good. He’s greater than all the highs and the lows.”

Eagles win Super Bowl LIX, denying Chiefs history in dominant fashion

The Philadelphia Eagles halted NFL history in its tracks, as they dominated the Kansas City Chiefs, 40-22, to win Super Bowl LIX at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday night.

The Chiefs were looking to be the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls, but the Eagles, a team who lost to the Chiefs two seasons ago in the “Big Game,” made sure to enact revenge.

Philadelphia now has its second Lombardi Trophy for the organization, having defeated Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in 2018.

Those that believed the Eagles would win this game didn’t see it coming in this fashion, as they dominated the Chiefs in all three phases from the beginning of this game right until the end.

The Chiefs, one of the best offenses in the NFL this season, and a team that has obvious history in this game over the past two years, had just 34 total yards of offense in the first half as the Eagles defense was thriving against the offensive line.

Mahomes was never comfortable, and it showed as they punted their first three possessions. Meanwhile, despite punting on the first possession, the Eagles were able to get in the end zone the second go-around.

TRUMP RECEIVES RAUCOUS RECEPTION AS HE SALUTES DURING SUPER BOWL LIX NATIONAL ANTHEM

After moving downfield, Jalen Hurts found Jahan Dotson for a 28-yard strike, which was initially believed to be the first touchdown of the game. But, after review, Dotson was spotted down at the one-yard line.

But you know what happens there.

Hurts was tush-pushed into the end zone to put the Eagles up 7-0, and they didn’t look back after that.

It was clear throughout both halves how uncomfortable Mahomes was, as the Eagles’ pass rush continued to get home no matter how many players were sent by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Mahomes was sacked at most five times in a single game in 2024, and the Eagles tallied six on the night, showcasing their domination. But it wasn’t just the defensive line – the secondary was putting in work, too.

It came in the first half when rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean, who celebrated his 22nd birthday, picked off Mahomes on a scrambling throw and ran it all the way back for a 38-yard pick-six, which put the Eagles up 17-0.

Mahomes would throw yet another interception on the first play of a drive already deep in their own territory late in the second quarter. Two plays later, Hurts found A.J. Brown, which he did in Super Bowl LVII as well, for a touchdown that almost felt like a dagger at 24-0.

When the second half kicked off, the Chiefs were already in desperation mode, and five plays into the first drive, they were forced to punt. And after the Eagles kicked a field goal, Mahomes saw his fourth-and-short pass knocked down as he turned it back over to the Eagles.

Then, the true dagger was seen in this game, as DeVonta Smith, who grew up an hour from New Orleans in Amite City, Louisiana, broke out a 46-yard touchdown catch on a perfectly thrown ball from Hurts.

At 34-0, the deficit was insurmountable for Mahomes and the Chiefs, even if rookie Xavier Worthy found the end zone on a 24-yard pass from Mahomes.

But ultimately, the Chiefs were never close to a comeback as the Eagles kept making plays, and never let the classic “Mahomes Magic” get put to work.

A man appeared to sneak into Kendrick Lamar’s performance at halftime of Super Bowl LIX.

Lamar performed several of his hits, including “Not Like Us,” “Be Humble” and “DNA,” and he was surrounded by numerous performers.

However, the person was able to get onto the field and hold up a Palestinian flag during the show at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.

During Lamar’s performance of his new hit “tv off,” the man held the flag on top of a prop car, and then ran onto the field with the flag.

The person wandered back and forth on the field before members of security arrived. The man was dragged off of the field.

The protest took place with Trump in attendance at the game, marking the first time a sitting president has ever attended the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady disagrees with referees on controversial pass interference call against Eagles in Super Bowl LIX

The officiating in Super Bowl LIX has been a hot-button topic in the weeks and days leading up to the big game in New Orleans.

Earlier this week, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell dismissed claims that officiating crews are biased in favor of the Kansas City Chiefs. He described the allegations as “ridiculous.” It took just a few minutes to tick off the game clock on Sunday before the referees took the spotlight once again.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni elected to go for it on fourth down in the first quarter. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts found wide receiver A.J. Brown far down the right sideline.

But Brown’s catch was negated when referees threw a penalty flag. Brown was assessed with an offensive pass interference penalty.

Replays appeared to show some contact between Brown and Chiefs defensive back Trent McDuffie, who fell to the ground during the play. The referee’s call sparked some controversy, with some arguing Brown’s actions did not escalate to the level of pass interference.

Seven-time Super Bowl winner and FOX Sports lead analyst Tom Brady was among those who took issue with the call.

“He’s a big, physical, strong receiver. Just getting off the press on McDuffie. Aw, don’t like that one bit. This is too critical of a game. The hand-fighting is going on down the field. What do you think, Mike?” Brady asked FOX Sports rules expert Mike Pereira, who is also a member of the broadcast team.

“Certainly I agree when you look at, there’s hand-fighting. There’s a little bit of shove at the end and a trip. I think it’s one that did not need to be called,” Pereira explained.

Brady followed Pereira’s comments by asserting that type of call shouldn’t happen in a game of this magnitude.

“I always thought in these games you let the players play. It should be decided on the field. Don’t like that call to start the game,” Brady finished.

The Eagles went into the locker room at the Caesars Superdome with a 24-0 halftime lead. Hurts rushed for a touchdown and threw another in the first half. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes ended the first two quarters with just 33 passing yards. He threw two interceptions, one of which Eagles defensive back Cooper DeJean ran back for a touchdown.

Eagles rookie, celebrating his 22nd birthday, records pick-6 in Super Bowl LIX for first NFL interception

Cooper DeJean’s Super Bowl birthday got that much more special in the second quarter on Sunday.

The rookie cornerback, who turned 22 on Sunday, has been a young star for the Eagles secondary, and in the big game, he gave everyone a reminder of how good he is.

On 3rd-and-16, coming off being sacked on back-to-back plays, Patrick Mahomes rolled out and looked for DeAndre Hopkins, but DeJean was right there to pick it off.

Then, with blockers in front, he took it all the way to the house to put the Eagles up 17-0.

It was also the first interception of his NFL career.

The lights were on Saquon Barkley, who was celebrating his 28th birthday in New Orleans, but he was rather quiet in the first half. It’s been a defensive showing for the Birds, though, as they have kept the Chiefs offense quiet.

Teams are 12-1 in the Super Bowl after taking an interception to the house; the one loss was by the Atlanta Falcons, who led the Patriots, 28-3, in Super Bowl LI but then allowed 31 unanswered points for the most devastating loss in Super Bowl history.

DeJean was picked in the second round of the NFL Draft out of Iowa. He was twice named to the Big Ten’s First Team and was the conference’s defensive back of the year in 2023.

During the regular season, he had 51 tackles, one forced fumble, three recoveries and six pass breakups.
