Saquon Barkley talks ‘dynasty’ after Eagles end Chiefs’ valiant bid at NFL history

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley had a dynasty on his mind after the team defeated the Kansas City Chiefs to win Super Bowl LIX on Sunday.

The Eagles took down the Chiefs’ dynasty and nixed any chance of Kansas City making history as the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowl titles. He reflected on the accomplishment in the postgame.

“I mean, yeah, it took seven years to get here – some ups and downs, some injuries,” he said, via Pro Football Talk. “But coming here and being a part of this team, I remember the first time I was in the huddle, and I looked to my left and looked to my right and could see all the Pro Bowlers and all the All-Pros on the roster and on the offense.

“The defense, I ain’t gonna lie, I didn’t know we would have the No. 1 defense. It kind of makes sense now because with all the talent that we had, they gave us hell in practice in camp. But it’s a team effort, so just Year 1, why not? Why not start our dynasty now?”

Barkley set the record for most rushing yards in a single season when counting regular-season and postseason stats. He had 57 yards in the win with 2,504 total rushing yards, beating the mark set in the 1998 season by Denver Broncos legend Terrell Davis.

Both running backs finished the season with the Lombardi Trophy in their hands.

“Hell of a year, right? I couldn’t do it without the big boys up front, everyone on this team. I just appreciate them – the whole Eagles organization,” Barkley said. “Of me being a newcomer, welcoming me in with open arms and helping build confidence back in me too. That was definitely helpful.

The birthday could be that must better with a ring, but there are more accolades the star player could achieve should he continue his dominant year. He’s 30 yards shy of breaking the NFL season rushing record with postseason numbers included. Barkley is short of Terrell Davis’ mark of 2,476 yards set in 1998 with the Denver Broncos.

Barkley made clear that everything about getting to the Super Bowl is nice, but the goal was to win the game.

“The dream was to win the Super Bowl, and I think we’re capable of doing it.”

Jerome Bettis might know a thing or two about success in the backfield.

A two-time All-Pro, six-time Pro Bowl running back, and Super Bowl champion, Bettis was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015.

Saquon Barkley is now well on his way to a gold jacket himself after becoming the ninth player to rush for 2,000 yards in a single season, and because of that historic performance, Bettis said no one is ahead of Barkley at the moment.

“I think Saquon Barkley is the best running back in the NFL right now. He’s special,” Bettis said in a recent interview with Fox News Digital. “He can do everything that you want a running back to do – catch it in the backfield, catch it deep, catch it in the flat, run for a first down, run for power, he can break it anywhere on the field. This guy is the ultimate running back.

“He’s the prototype – if you draw up what a running back should be, it’s Saquon Barkley.”

Barkley, of course, was drafted second overall by the New York Giants in 2018. After spending six seasons there, the new regime opted to let him go, and it’s been a nightmare for Big Blue ever since.

To rub salt in the wound, Barkley will now suit up for the Birds in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

The big game was once “bittersweet” for “The Bus” Shortly after winning his title, he lost his father at the age of 61 to a heart attack. Perhaps maybe the best moment of his life was almost immediately followed by the worst, but Bettis is now able to fully “understand the importance of this game” and take it all in.

So, Bettis, like Barkley, is in New Orleans this year to spread awareness about heart health, teaming up with the CDC Foundation’s “Live to the Beat” campaign in efforts to keep people from a life cut short like his dad.

“The whole idea is to get people to understand and see that heart health is important, and they can do small things to change what that heart health will be in the future,” he said. “The quality of life, everything that goes with it. Small changes to your diet, taking a little bit of sugar out of that diet, working out, going for a walk on a daily basis, just small things that can really encourage heart health.

“Looking at my mortality, I‘m 52, so I’m saying to myself I’ve got to make sure I’m doing some of those things that helps me so that I’m not a victim of a heart attack or high blood pressure, a stroke, those type of issues that come with poor heart health. I’m making sure people hear my story, and maybe they’re inspired to make a change.”

NFL players don’t go into the Hall of Fame representing a team like baseball players do, but if that were the case, it would be hard to argue that Barkley wouldn’t have an Eagles helmet if they win this title, Bettis said.

“He’s done something no Eagle has ever done, run for 2,000 yards, and has a chance to give them another championship. He would be cemented in the legacy of the Philadelphia Eagles,” he said. “If you talk about the history of the Eagles, you cannot not mention Saquon Barkley.”

Saquon Barkley, Pat Surtain II named Offensive, Defensive Players of the Year

After carrying their teams to the playoffs, Saquon Barkley and Pat Surtain II were named the best players on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, respectively.

The running back signed a three-year deal with the Eagles in the offseason after their division rival in the New York Giants opted to let him go and it’s been a nightmare for Big Blue and a dream for the Birds.

Barkley became the ninth person to rush for 2,000 yards in a single season, and had he not sat in Week 18, he probably would have the record.

While this is strictly a regular season award, Barkley is 30 yards away from setting the record for most rushing yards in a season, including playoffs. In 19 games played this season, including the postseason, Barkley has rushed for 2,447 yards and 18 touchdowns, five of which have come in his last two games.

Out of his 19 games played, he’s rushed for 100-plus 12 times and has eclipsed the 200-yard mark twice.

This is the first time a running back has won the award in back-to-back seasons since 2005 and 2006, when Shaun Alexander and LaDanian Tomlinson won the hardware, respectively.

Surtain became the first defensive back to win the award since Stephon Gilmore in 2019 after locking top receivers all season long. Surtain picked off four passes, returning them for an NFL-high 132 yards. He made his third consecutive Pro Bowl and was named a First-team All-Pro for the second time in three seasons.

  • Packers’ Josh Jacobs thinks running back pay ‘has to go up’ as players like Saquon Barkley lead offenses

Packers’ Josh Jacobs thinks running back pay ‘has to go up’ as players like Saquon Barkley lead offenses

Super Bowl LIX will feature arguably the NFL’s top running back in Saquon Barkley who, in his inaugural season with the Philadelphia Eagles, rushed for over 2,000 yards to join elite company in that respect on his way to playing in the “Big Game” for the first time.

Barkley, like many other running backs in the NFL, are the tonesetter on offense – as he goes, the rest of the offense follows. The same can be said for other star backs in the NFL, so why is Barkley making just $12.583 million per year on his new Eagles deal?

The running back market has been scrutinized by those who play the position, as well as others throughout the football world, because there are teams that wouldn’t be able to function without their running backs.

SIGN UP FOR TUBI AND STREAM SUPER BOWL LIX FOR FREE

For example, could you imagine Green Bay Packers’ success this season without Josh Jacobs, who was sixth in rushing yards this year? He spoke to Fox News Digital on Wednesday at radio row ahead of Super Bowl LIX, where he said the running back market “has to go up.”

“I think there’s no way it couldn’t go up, because I feel like the top seven guys right now, three of them got to get paid soon,” Jacobs, who also discussed his partnership with USAA, the official “Salute to Service” partner of the NFL. “Those guys are Bijan [Robinson], Jahmyr [Gibbs], and Kyren [Williams]. Their [contract] stuff is coming up.”

The players Jacobs mentioned are still on their rookie deals, but each of them finished in the top seven in rushing yards in 2024. And there were almost two 2,000-yard rushers last season, as Baltimore Ravens veteran Derrick Henry thrived with his new squad.

HOW TO WATCH SUPER BOWL LIX BETWEEN CHIEFS, EAGLES STREAMED ON TUBI

Jacobs showed love to his position group, only proving his point more.

“Obviously, doing what Saquon and Derrick has done. You even see Joe Mixon and what he’s done. I think it’s got to go up,” he explained. “Even with Christian and his extension he got at the beginning of the year, I think it helps the running back market. But seeing what we did, how much we were for our teams, I think the market has to go up.”

Jacobs signed a four-year, $48 million deal with the Packers in free agency this past season, joining a team that he had great success with as he scored 15 times on the ground.

    Josh Jacobs celebrates touchdown

But to think that players like Mixon, who finished with 1,312 yards from scrimmage for the Houston Texans, is only making $9.875 million per season doesn’t sound right when some tight ends are making close to double that.

In fact, Henry’s deal with the Ravens was only worth $16 million over two years.

Will the running back market finally adjust to where players in the position group are happy with the compensation? Or will teams still consider it a position that can be plug-and-play throughout the year?

    SUPER BOWL MEMORIES WITH USAA

Jacobs is in the Big Easy to not only enjoy his time around fellow peers while watching the Big Game – he’s surprising one of our military veterans with tickets to the Super Bowl.

Sergeant Major Kevin Bennett of the U.S. Marine Corps spent 34 years, from 1971-2004, dedicating his life to combat missions all over the world. Being a huge Packers fan, it was only right in Jacobs’ eyes that the running back be the one to surprise Bennett with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience football’s biggest stage.

Jacobs and Bennett will share some time together on Friday when tickets will be bestowed on one of America’s heroes.

“Man, I’m excited, because, obviously, to me, they’re the real heroes,” Jacobs said. “My grandpa served in the Air Force and my uncle actually served in the marines. So, for me, it’s definitely closer to home. To be able sit down, talk to him, pick his brain a little bit, tell him I appreciate his service and things like that is definitely huge for me.”

  • Mark Ingram declares Saquon Barkley the reason Eagles are back in Super Bowl LIX: ‘Special season’

Mark Ingram declares Saquon Barkley the reason Eagles are back in Super Bowl LIX: ‘Special season’

Since 2009, there have only been four 2,000-yard rushing seasons in the NFL.

It began with Chris Johnson, known forever as “CJ2K” after his 2009 season with the Tennessee Titans. Then, Adrian Peterson defied all odds when he came back to the Minnesota Vikings after tearing his ACL in 2011, rushing for 2,097 in 2012.

Finally, Derrick Henry, another Titans running back, notched 2,027 yards during the 2020 campaign, and he almost got it again with the Baltimore Ravens in 2024.

The 2024 season’s top rusher, though, was Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley, who had one former running back star believing his campaign was better than all the ones mentioned before.

“In recent memory, man, just the impact he had coming from the Giants and going to the Eagles in season one, is second to none for sure,” Mark Ingram II, the New Orleans Saints legend back in town for Super Bowl LIX where Barkley will be playing, told Fox News Digital on Radio Row. “We’ve seen some special performances from backs, but his season is second to none.

“What he’s been able to do, the value he’s shown to the Eagles organization, the value he’s showing to the Eagles’ offense. It’s been a special season.”

HOW TO WATCH SUPER BOWL LIX BETWEEN CHIEFS, EAGLES STREAMED ON TUBI

When it comes to running backs, what Ingram loves most is when a player is a complete back. That translates to more than just a north-to-south, bulldozing runner. A do-it-all back can not only cover all the running lanes, but he can pass catch and block out of the backfield.

Barkley has showcased he can do all that in his six seasons with the Giants, but Ingram cannot believe the level he has done it at up to this point.

“The highlight-reel runs he’s had, speed, power, agility, catching the football and jumping over people backwards. He’s operating at a high level right now,” he explained, while also touching on his work with the American Gaming Association this week. “He’s in the zone and that’s why the Eagles are at where they’re at right now because of Saquon Barkley.”

Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley celebrate

Barkley led the league in rushing with 2,005 yards, and he might have broken Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing yards record (2,105) if he had not sat out the entire Week 18 regular-season finale against his former Giants. Not only that, he also had 33 receptions for 278 yards and added two touchdowns through the air to mark 15 total on the season.

Barkley’s massive production in 2024 is a clear reason why the Eagles are currently in the same position they were two seasons ago, when they were facing the same Kansas City Chiefs in the “Big Game.”

Is Barkley the difference maker this time around, though? Time, 60 minutes to be exact, on Sunday, will show the football world whether that is true or false.

One thing is for sure: Barkley is special, no matter which way you spin it. Ingram can name anything a running back should do on gameday, and Barkley does it at an elite level.

    HAVE A BETTING GAMEPLAN

Americans are expected to legally wager a record $1.39 billion dollars on Super Bowl LIX this year, which has led Ingram to team up with the American Gaming Association to preach having a betting gameplan.

    Tubi promo

First and foremost, have a budget and stick to it. Be responsible, bet legally and don’t be harassing players – sending Venmos, sending CashApps when they do not hit your prop bets. Enjoy it, respect it. It is supposed to be entertainment.

Ingram finds it crazy that some fans take betting to the extreme, especially when it comes to what he calls bashing players through various means because they did not win.

“It is crazy. People Venmo-ing, people DMing. It’s crazy, man. The players didn’t set the over/under for themselves, Vegas did. So, be mad at Vegas. The players are out there trying to do everything they can to help their team win a game.”

  • Why Giants’ Jalin Hyatt will be rooting for Saquon Barkley in Super Bowl LIX: ‘He was like a big bro’

Why Giants’ Jalin Hyatt will be rooting for Saquon Barkley in Super Bowl LIX: ‘He was like a big bro’

New York Giants wide receiver Jalin Hatt was hungry coming off his Biletnikoff Award-winning season with the Tennessee Volunteers when he was selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

But college success doesn’t always translate smoothly to the pros. Great coaches, and even better teammates, can help ease that process for young players looking to make their mark on the league.

That’s why Hyatt will be putting divisional rivalries to the side when it comes to Saquon Barkley, the superstar Philadelphia Eagles running back who was Hyatt’s teammate in 2023.

SIGN UP FOR TUBI AND STREAM SUPER BOWL LIX FOR FREE

Wide receiver Jalin Hyatt at New York Giants minicamp at their practice complex in East Rutherford, N.J. (Imagn)

“I’m proud of Saquon,” Hyatt told Fox News Digital while discussing his partnership with World of Hyatt at Super Bowl LIX. “When I came in as a rookie when he was here [with the Giants], he was like a big bro for me.

“Helping me through the facility, helping me through plays on the field. Just really being a leader for me, and I have so much respect for him for that. Just to see what he’s doing over there with the Eagles, I’m really not surprised what he’s doing. He’s a special player. I’m definitely going to be rooting for him for sure for what he can do. I’m just proud of him.”

Now, Giants fans, don’t get on Hyatt too quickly after saying he will be rooting for Barkley. It doesn’t mean he wants to see the Eagles hoisting the trophy Sunday night.

He thinks their opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs, will win for a third straight year.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

“I love Sa, I love Saquon. That’s one of my friends, so I’ll be rooting for him personally,” Hyatt said, smiling. “But I do like the Chiefs. I like Pat Mahomes. I like Xavier Worthy. I like a lot of those guys over there. Not only that, they’ve been there. They’re comfortable being in that spotlight.”

Hyatt touched on the “two business decisions” made between Barkley and the Giants in the offseason, which sent the franchise’s fan base into a spiral. Barkley was clearly the team’s best player, but after spending so much on Daniel Jones with a four-year, $160 million contract, the Giants slapped the franchise tag on their star running back and never worked out an extension.

Barkley ended up getting what he wanted from the Eagles, while the Giants released Jones mid-season during a 3-14 campaign.

    Saquon Barkley waves

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley greets fans at MetLife Stadium. (Robert Deutsch/Imagn Images)

“I think that Sa, if he didn’t want to be here with the Giants, he’s obviously going to have his places he wanted to go and where he wanted to play,” Hyatt said. “Obviously, with the Giants, it’s a big business with them. ‘Do we want him? Do we want to continue to have Saquon on our team, or do we want to go somewhere else?’ I just think it was a business decision on both ends.

“Obviously, I wanted Saquon to stay just because he’s big bro for me, helping me as a rookie when I came in. So, I was sad when he left.”

Hyatt knows he and the team have to move on.

That’s what Barkley has tried to do, yet the trolling by NFL fans on the Giants has gotten significantly worse in recent weeks because of his performances. When Barkley spoke Monday night to quarterback Jameis Winston about possibly joining the Giants in free agency, it had people speculating he was taking a jab at his former squad.

But the Giants must sleep in the bed they made, and the only way to silence critics will be winning games.

Hyatt will be doing his part to have a bounce-back 2025 season after a down year in 2024 (he played just 33% of offensive snaps), which begins with offseason training in Dallas after the Super Bowl.

But first, Hyatt will be watching closely Sunday to see his friend and former teammate play.

MAKING MEMORIES WITH WORLD OF HYATT

With the last name fitting perfectly, Hyatt has partnered with World of Hyatt for three years, and they’ve collaborated on a fun experience.

World of Hyatt’s Find Experiences in New Orleans and New York City offer custom experiences where Hyatt members can bid points on the football star’s Guide to New Orleans, for example, which includes a two-night stay at the Hyatt Centric French Quarter New Orleans with a guest, food, walking tours and a custom welcome video from the football star himself.

Eagles’ Saquon Barkley makes clear ‘dream wasn’t just getting’ to Super Bowl LIX

For Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, the dream has yet to be realized.

The star player told FOX Sports’ Peter Schrager he didn’t envision the fanfare that occurs before the game but “definitely envisions playing in this game.

“That’s why me and my family made the decision to come to Philadelphia, to have an opportunity to play in the Super Bowl. And here we are,” he said.

Barkley joined the Eagles in the offseason after the New York Giants allowed him to test the free-agent waters. It proved to be the move of the offseason as he nearly broke Eric Dickerson’s rushing record during the regular season, tallying up 2,005 yards on 345 carries. He scored 13 touchdowns on the ground as well.

Barkley said he was just “thankful” to be put in a position to succeed. But he knows the job is far from finished. Getting to the Super Bowl wasn’t the goal — winning it was.

Barkley is now engaged to Congdon, according to People, as he checks off a major life moment ahead of his biggest career game to date as he and the Eagles head to New Orleans to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX this upcoming Sunday.

“I can’t be the athlete I am and have the success I have so in my career without the help of her,” Barkley told the outlet of Congdon.

The two share two children together, daughter Jada, 6, and son Saquon Jr., 2, and their pre-game ritual of special handshakes and kisses has gone viral in Barkley’s first season with the Eagles.

Barkley and Congdon met at Penn State and have been going strong since 2017. Barkley told People that they will “just sit back and laugh sometimes when [their kids are] over there playing and just smile and think about where everything started.”

It started with the New York Giants, who took Barkley second overall in the 2018 NFL Draft after a stellar Nittany Lions career. However, after a rollercoaster six seasons in New York, which ended badly after not getting what he wanted contract-wise, Barkley signed with the Eagles in free agency this past offseason.

Clearly, it was the right move for the running back, as he could have the best running back season of all-time statistically depending on his performance against the Chiefs.

Personally, the move has been something Barkley says his family has loved, with the city of Philadelphia embracing him right away despite being their rival for years.

Barkley and his family were at Lincoln Financial Field sharing quite the moment when green and white confetti rained down on the Eagles after dominating the Washington Commanders, 55-23, in the NFC Championship.

“If I could wrap my arms around this memory, I would…” Congdon captioned an Instagram post of her family celebrating the victory that put them in Super Bowl LIX. Barkley commented, “Love you,” with a heart emoji.

It has been quite a celebratory year for Barkley, who led the NFL in rushing yards with over 2,000, and it could continue on his 28th birthday, which just so happens to fall on Super Bowl LIX.

“The best birthday gift you can have is playing in the Super Bowl and the only thing better than that is winning the Super Bowl on your Birthday,” he said to People.

Barkley added that he is not focused on his birthday plans at all, hoping to “continue to play at a high level” to help his team beat the Chiefs, a team chasing NFL history as the only squad to win three straight Lombardi Trophies.

Barkley scored three touchdowns for the Eagles in the NFC Championship victory over the Commanders, and he certainly will try to do so again in New Orleans, where his now-fiancee and family will be cheering him on.

However, aside from the coveted trophy, he has a chance to win another grand prize next week: one of Jake Paul’s Ferraris.

Paul gave his word in a social media post last week.

“This is a message for Saquon Barkley and Saquon Barkley only. If you win the Super Bowl MVP, I think you can do it brother … I will give you one of my Ferraris,” Paul said in the video.

In a video where Oz The Mentalist visited the Philadelphia Eagles, Barkley was spotted wearing a shirt from Paul’s men’s personal care brand, W.

Barkley has dominated all season, much to New York Giants fans’ chagrin. After the team opted to move off him, he became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season. Had he not rested in Week 18, he very well could have broken Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record.

In 19 games played this season, including the postseason, Barkley has rushed for 2,447 yards and 18 touchdowns, five of which have come in his last two games.

Seven running backs have won the Super Bowl MVP, but it’s been almost 30 years since the last one: Terrell Davis in 1997.

Barkley is 30 yards away breaking Davis’ record for the most rushing yards in a season including playoff games.

NFL SET TO PLAY IN AUSTRALIA IN 2026 WITH MARQUEE TEAMS: REPORT

The superstar running back joined the Eagles on a three-year deal this past offseason, and it’s proving to be perhaps their best move in recent memory. Out of his 19 games played, he’s rushed for 100-plus 12 times and has eclipsed the 200-yard mark twice.

Including the playoffs, Barkley is averaging 128.8 rushing yards per game. So, it’s certainly not out of the question that he could break the running back drought.

He’ll just have to do it against the back-to-back reigning champion Kansas City Chiefs.
