  • Angels’ oft-injured bust Anthony Rendon will miss extended time again

Angels’ oft-injured bust Anthony Rendon will miss extended time again

Anthony Rendon has played in 257 of a possible 708 games since signing his $245 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels in 2019.

And it will be a while until he plays in his 258th.

The All-Star-turned-free agent bust is expected to miss an extended period of time, possibly the entire season, after undergoing hip surgery.

Rendon, who will turn 35 in June, has been on the injured list 12 times since 2021. He was on the injured list three times in 2024 due to issues with his hamstring, lower back and obliques while batting .218 with no homers and 14 RBIs in 57 games.

The Angels paid top dollar for Rendon at the peak of his career ahead of the 2020 season, just over a month after he batted .319 with 34 homers, a 1.010 OPS and an MLB-leading 126 RBIs during the 2019 season. He played a major role in the Washington Nationals’ first World Series title run that year.

Since then, in the rare instance he’s been on the field, he’s been a shell of himself. He has one less RBI, and a dozen fewer home runs in his five-year Angels tenure than he did in that entire 2019 season.

Rendon’s contract expires after the 2026 season.

In the last two years alone, Rendon said baseball has “never been a top priority for me,” complained about the length of the MLB season and volunteered that he has been contemplating retirement since shortly after his major league career began. He also swung at an A’s fan in 2023, which led to a suspension.

Rendon has failed to play 60 games in a season since joining the Halos, averaging 51 games played in that span. With the Nationals, he owned an .859 OPS and was on MVP ballots in five separate seasons.

  • Mavericks’ Anthony Davis suffers injury in debut following blockbuster trade

Mavericks’ Anthony Davis suffers injury in debut following blockbuster trade

The Dallas Mavericks suffered a case of awful luck on Saturday.

Anthony Davis, the team’s acquisition in its stunning trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, suffered a groin injury in the team’s win over the Houston Rockets. He left the game early and was ruled out for Monday’s contest against the Sacramento Kings.

    Davis may be out longer.

ESPN reported that Davis suffered a left adductor strain and that he could be out for a few weeks. The power forward tried to downplay concern about the ailment.

“Just the leg got tight, like a little spasm,” he said after the game against the Rockets. “Just came back and tried to get it loose and everything. Obviously, dealing with the ab strain still, so just tried to get it loose. It wouldn’t really loosen up and let go, but it’s nothing serious. I’m fine.”

LUKA DONČIĆ ODDS: WHAT KINDS OF NUMBERS CAN HE PUT UP WITH THE LAKERS?

The concern about Davis’ health comes amid the Mavericks’ trade of Luka Doncic. The deal stunned the rest of the league and fans of the NBA. It resonated so much that NFL stars were left just as confused as anyone while at Super Bowl LIX radio row in New Orleans last week.

Davis isn’t a scrub in his own right. The nine-time All-Star played 76 games during the 2023-24 season but has missed at least 20 games in each of the last five seasons.

Anthony Davis leaves Mavericks debut with injury after being traded for Luka Dončić

Dallas Mavericks fans were hostile Saturday during the team’s first home game since Luka Dončić was traded.

The 25-year-old reigning scoring champion was sent to the Los Angeles Lakers, who gave up Anthony Davis in return.

Davis made his Dallas debut Saturday amid protests and chants calling for the firing of general manager Nico Harrison outside before the game.

It all started as Harrison had imagined. Davis dominated the first half with 24 points and 13 rebounds.

However, less than four minutes into the third quarter, Davis appeared to injure his groin. Davis had been out with an abdominal strain earlier in the week.

Davis went down without contact as Alperen Sangun of the Houston Rockets drove past him for a layup. Davis grabbed his groin area as he walked slowly toward the offensive end and stayed in the corner near the Dallas bench while his team ran the offense.

Davis didn’t try to go back the other way after the Rockets regained possession. The Mavericks committed a foul to stop the clock and get Davis out of the game. He stayed in the bench area briefly before leaving the court, and he was not spotted on the bench in the fourth quarter.

The 31-year-old big man has had injury issues in the past, but he did play in a career-high 76 games last year.

  • Colts’ Jonathan Taylor confident in Anthony Richardson after subpar 1st full season

Colts’ Jonathan Taylor confident in Anthony Richardson after subpar 1st full season

Anthony Richardson’s rookie year was cut short after just four games due to an injury, so the 2024 campaign marked his first full season.

Safe to say, it didn’t go as many Indianapolis Colts fans had hoped.

Richardson suffered yet another injury in just the fourth game of the season, and early on, he struggled. In that span, he completed just over half of his passes, threw six interceptions, and fumbled the ball three times (thankfully, all were recovered).

He returned in Week 7, but it got even worse. In Weeks 7 and 8, he went 20-for-56 through the air and lost two fumbles. So, the Colts went with Joe Flacco for a brief period.

His final five games were much of the same – less than half his pass attempts were caught, and he couldn’t hold onto the ball. For one thing, he did rush for 358 yards in that span. But, he missed the final two games with yet another injury.

Add it all up, and Richardson’s first full season ended up with completing 47.7% of his passes while throwing just eight touchdowns against 12 turnovers in 11 games. He did run for 499 yards and six touchdowns, but he put the ball on the ground nine times.

However, his star running back in Jonathan Taylor is pleading for everyone to give him some time.

“People don’t realize quarterbacks coming out now are like 24 – he’s only 22. So, he hasn’t played like much ball yet, only 15 games in the NFL,” Taylor said to Fox News Digital in a recent interview (Richardson turns 23 in May).

Taylor is in New Orleans for Super Bowl week, perhaps a place he’d rather be to contend for the Lombardi Trophy. But during his trip, he’s getting out to Dairy Queen for his typical pregame meal.

“I’m going there right after this. I’m getting some of that sauced and tossed honey barbecue chicken strip basket,” Taylor said.

Oh, and he won’t forget about his “go-to” Oreo Blizzard either.

In speaking about his quarterback, though, Taylor also pointed to what people don’t see.

“He’s on the field getting extra reps. He’s really in the playbook all day, every day so he has that work ethic.”

Lakers, Mavericks pull off wild blockbuster as Luka Dončić, Anthony Davis swap teams: reports

The NBA world was hit with perhaps the craziest trade in a generation in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

According to multiple reports, the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks came to an agreement to swap Luka Dončić and Anthony Davis as part of a three-team blockbuster deal.

The Lakers received Dončić, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris, while the Mavericks took on Davis, Max Christie, and Los Angeles’ 2029 first-round pick.

To settle it all out, the Utah Jazz acquired Jalen Hood-Schifino and two second-round picks.

ESPN’s Shams Charania broke the trade early Sunday morning, and because of the starpower involved, the immediate reaction was that the reporter had been hacked. However, it was later confirmed by multiple other outlets.

Charania reported that the Mavs approached Los Angeles recently, saying their 25-year-old global superstar was available via trade; Dallas general manager Nico Harrison told ESPN that he was concerned about the team’s defense, which is now massively improved by replacing Dončić with Davis.

2024-25 NBA CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS: THUNDER FAVORED; LAKERS RISE AFTER DONČIĆ TRADE

But Dončić is a phenomenon, and a young one at that. The Slovenian led the NBA with 33.4 points per game last season and won’t turn 26 until later this month. In his career, he averages 28.6 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists, putting himself in the MVP conversation every year of his young career.

It was also reported that LeBron James did not find out about the trade until shortly before the news broke, while he was out to dinner in New York shortly after his Lakers defeated the New York knicks – Davis was ruled inactive for the game.

Davis, a defensive player of the year candidate last year, is putting up 25.7 points and 11.9 rebounds this season, both slightly better than his career averages of 24.2 and 10.7.
