Fake toll road texts sweep America as Chinese scammers target US drivers

A new scam has come to light targeting residents across the United States with text messages that pretend to be from toll road operators. For many who receive these messages, it’s an easy and expensive trap to fall into.

The scam begins when people receive a message claiming they have unpaid tolls and may be charged fines. Scammers then ask for card details and a one-time password sent via SMS to steal their money. Security researchers believe that Chinese smishing groups are behind this scam, selling SMS-based phishing kits to thousands of scammers.

What you need to know about the fake toll scam

As reported by KrebsOnSecurity, the scam begins with a text message claiming to be from a toll road operator, such as E-ZPass or SunPass. The message warns about unpaid tolls and the possibility of fines, forcing recipients to act quickly. Victims are directed to a fake website mimicking the toll operator’s site, where they are asked to provide sensitive information, including payment card details and one-time passwords.

Security researchers have traced the scam to Chinese smishing groups known for creating and selling sophisticated SMS phishing kits. One such kit, “Lighthouse,” makes it easy for scammers to spoof toll road operators in multiple states. These kits are designed to trick users into sharing financial information, which is then used to commit fraud.

Reports of these phishing attacks have surfaced across the U.S., targeting users of toll systems like EZDriveMA in Massachusetts, SunPass in Florida and the North Texas Toll Authority in Texas. Similar scams have been reported in states including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Minnesota and Washington. The phishing pages are mobile-optimized and won’t load on non-mobile devices, making them even more deceptive.

    Phishing scams are evolving

Recent advancements in phishing kits include better deliverability through integration with Apple iMessage and Android’s RCS technology, bypassing traditional SMS spam filters. These methods increase the likelihood of victims receiving and engaging with fraudulent messages. The phishing sites are operated dynamically in real time by criminals, making them harder to detect and shut down. Even individuals who don’t own a vehicle have reported receiving these messages, indicating random targeting.

7 ways to stay safe from toll scam messages

By staying vigilant and following the steps below, you can protect yourself from falling victim to toll scams.

    1) Verify directly with toll operators: If you receive a message about unpaid tolls or fines, do not click on any links. Instead, visit the official website of your toll operator or contact their customer service directly to verify the claim.

    2) Install strong antivirus software: The best way to safeguard yourself from malicious links is to have strong antivirus software installed on all your devices. This protection can also alert you to phishing emails and ransomware scams, keeping your personal information and digital assets safe. Get my picks for the best 2025 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.

    3) Do not share personal information: Never provide sensitive details like payment card information, Social Security numbers or one-time passwords via text or unverified websites. Legitimate toll operators will not request such information through SMS.

    4) Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): Use 2FA for your accounts whenever possible. This adds an extra layer of protection by requiring two forms of verification, reducing the risk of unauthorized access even if some details are compromised.

    5) Be wary of urgency in messages: Scammers often create a sense of urgency, claiming immediate action is required to avoid penalties. Take a moment to assess the situation and verify the legitimacy of the message through official channels.

    6) Report suspicious messages: If you suspect a phishing attempt, report it to the Federal Trade Commission or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center. Include details like the sender’s phone number and any links in the message. Additionally, inform your mobile carrier to help block similar scams.

    7) Use a personal data removal service: Employ a reputable data removal service to reduce your online footprint and minimize the risk of scammers obtaining your personal information. These services can help remove your data from various data broker sites, making it harder for scammers to target you with personalized scams. While no service promises to remove all your data from the internet, having a removal service is great if you want to constantly monitor and automate the process of removing your information from hundreds of sites continuously over a longer period of time. Check out my top picks for data removal services here.

HOW TO REMOVE YOUR PRIVATE DATA FROM THE INTERNET

    Kurt’s key takeaway

It’s deeply concerning how these scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated and widespread. It’s no longer just about random phishing attempts. These are carefully crafted schemes designed to exploit our trust in systems we rely on daily. The fact that scammers can impersonate toll road operators so convincingly is alarming, and it shows how vulnerable we are to such attacks. It frustrates me to think of how many people may fall victim to these tactics, losing their hard-earned money.

Rubio’s State Dept caps migration-heavy 1st week with Colombia deportation win: ‘America will not back down’

A diplomatic victory over Colombia capped a busy week for the U.S. State Deptment under new Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who oversaw an agency that quickly made border security and immigration a top priority — racking up a flurry of actions in the space of a week.

After Colombian President Gustavo Petro refused to take U.S. deportation flights carrying Colombian nationals on Sunday, Rubio announced the immediate suspension of the issuing of visas in the country, as well as travel sanctions on government officials.

“Measures will continue until Colombia meets its obligations to accept the return of its own citizens,” Rubio said. “America will not back down when it comes to defending its national security interests.”

RUBIO PAUSES FOREIGN AID FROM STATE DEPARTMENT AND USAID TO ENSURE IT PUTS ‘AMERICA FIRST’

Within hours, Colombia had backed down and agreed to what the White House said were the terms provided by President Donald Trump. However, the administration said that visa sanctions would remain in effect until the deportations were received.

The diplomatic clash was a strong finish to what has been an immigration-focused week for not only the administration as a whole, but also the State Department. The agency was involved in multiple instructions and moves on visa issuance, migration and funding to foreign organizations.

On Rubio’s first day in office, the department instructed consular officers to put national security first when reviewing visas and ordered the department to implement enhanced vetting for visa applications from countries where there are concerns about a heightened national security risk.

He would later go on to declare the administration’s priorities, which focused on ending mass migration and ramping up border security as top priorities.

“First, we must curb mass migration and secure our borders. The State Department will no longer undertake any activities that facilitate or encourage mass migration,” Rubio said.  “Our diplomatic relations with other countries, particularly in the Western Hemisphere, will prioritize securing America’s borders, stopping illegal and destabilizing migration, and negotiating the repatriation of illegal immigrants.”

Separately, a senior State Department official told Fox News Digital that a worldwide cable clarified that officials must resist pressures to speed up visa or passport processing at the expense of security concerns.

The State Department then also paused all new obligations of funding for foreign aid programs through either the State Dept. or U.S. Agency for International Development. There are longstanding concerns by conservatives that those programs can exacerbate mass migration.

On refugee admissions, the department suspended the Refugee Admissions Program — in response to an executive order by President Trump. It also issued a worldwide alert announcing the upcoming changes to birthright citizenship in response to another Trump order.

Since then, the department has worked with other agencies on border security and the implementation of the birthright citizenship order, including working to cancel a green card for a Moroccan terrorist, the official said.

That cooperation was on display on Sunday when multiple agencies worked together to deal with the disagreement with Colombia.

“As demonstrated by today’s actions, we are unwavering in our commitment to end illegal immigration and bolster America’s border security,” Rubio said.

Miss America wore ‘MAHA’ gown to inaugural ball in celebration of RFK Jr.

An Atelier dress designer and supporter of President Donald Trump shocked partygoers and social media users once again with a silhouette unlike anything he’d handcrafted before.

Andre Soriano, a shop owner in Occoquan, Virginia, and originally from the Philippines, designed a green “Make America Healthy Again” dress for recently crowned Miss America Abbie Stockard.

“She’s the sweetest,” Soriano told Fox News Digital of Stockard. “She’s the best representation of America. She’s going to be a great example for all the kids.”

Stockard, who represented Alabama and was crowned Miss America Jan. 5, wore the custom gown to the MAHA inaugural ball, held for a night in celebration of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Trump’s pick for secretary of Health and Human Services Jan. 20.

She has since shared photographs from the event opposite RFK Jr. and his wife, Cheryl Hines, among others.

“I’m truly, truly honored and grateful to be part of her dressing up,” Soriano said.

The controversial designer is well known for the infamous “Make America Great Again” ensemble he crafted for singer-songwriter Joy Villa, which she wore to the 2017 Grammy Awards.

“I’ve been in Hollywood before,” Soriano told Fox News Digital. “I’ve been dissected, especially after I made the Trump dress.”

Soriano has been the recipient of hateful rhetoric both online and in person for his patriotic tailoring.

“We’re going to tell the,. ‘God bless you, and peace be with you,’” he said of the backlash.

Soriano received the measurements for Stockard just two days before she arrived in Washington, D.C., for the inaugural events.

President Donald Trump called out Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan at the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Thursday, accusing the bank of not offering banking to conservatives.

“You’ve done a fantastic job,” Trump told Moynihan during a question and answer session, “but I hope you start opening your bank to conservatives, because many conservatives complain that the banks are not allowing them to do business within the bank – and that included a place called Bank of America… They don’t take conservative business.”

Trump outlines tax cuts, tells World Economic Forum ‘make your product in America’

President Donald Trump on Thursday delivered remarks virtually to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in which he discussed how his tax plans will look to incentivize companies to make products in America or face tariffs.

“To further unleash our economy, our majorities in the House and Senate, which we also took along with the presidency, are going to pass the largest tax cut in American history, including massive tax cuts for workers and families and big tax cuts for domestic producers and manufacturers,” Trump said.

Portions of the original Trump tax cuts – including the lower tax rates for individuals as well as the expanded standard deduction and child tax credit – are due to expire at the end of 2025 if they’re not extended. Trump said, “We’re working with the Democrats on getting an extension of the original Trump tax cuts, as you probably know by just reading any paper.”

“My message to every business in the world is very simple: come make your product in America and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on earth. We’re bringing them down very substantially, even from the original Trump tax cuts,” the president said.

“But if you don’t make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply you will have to pay a tariff,” he said. “Differing amounts, but a tariff, which will direct hundreds of billions of dollars and even trillions of dollars into our treasury to strengthen our economy and pay down debt.”

Trump campaigned on an across-the-board tariff on all imports in the 10% to 20% range, along with a 60% levy on goods from China.

Since taking office, he indicated he’s planning to start with a 10% tariff on China, plus 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico that could begin as early as Feb. 1.

  • What caused the massive revolt against DEI in America?

What caused the massive revolt against DEI in America?

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs are facing a reckoning.

The DEI movement became a focus of American cultural wars in 2020 following the death of George Floyd, which sparked a national conversation about race as well as riots that went on for months. Such programs became commonplace across American government, academia and workplaces.

The pushback against DEI has been building for years, and several major corporations have rolled back their policies since early 2024, including John Deere, Ford, Harley-Davidson and Walmart.

Ford, Lowe’s, Tractor Supply Company, John Deere, Harley-Davidson and Walmart are some of the major companies that backed away from their DEI commitments in 2024. (Getty Images/Reuters / Fox News)

On Monday, when President Donald Trump returned to the White House for a second term, one of the many executive orders he signed on Day 1 ended federal DEI programs.

A Fox News poll conducted early last month found 45% of voters believe it is either “extremely” or “very” important for Trump to focus on ending DEI programs. Another 18% of respondents said it is “somewhat” important to ditch the initiatives.

VOTERS BACK TRUMP ENDING DEI PROGRAMS, POLL SHOWS, AS FEDERAL DEADLINE LOOMS

So why is it that nearly half of Americans believe it is a priority to ditch DEI, and the vast majority have concerns about the programs? As with most battles in the culture wars, experts are divided on the cause.

Some point to Trump as the driver behind the backlash against DEI, while others argue the way the programs were forced on Americans led to a revolt.

    donald Trump

Naomi Wheeless, an executive at Nextech and a DEI advocate who specializes in race and gender issues, believes the primary reason for the recent backlash against DEI is that business leaders had a strong sense that Trump was likely to win the presidency again. She said Trump was very vocal about wanting to roll back DEI initiatives, and that sentiment only grew as his campaign gained steam.

“It is important to note, that it’s not just about President Trump being against DEI, presidents are allowed to have their opinions,” Wheeless told FOX Business. “It is that he is a president with a well-documented history of vindictiveness. He creates a sense of fear and the feeling that whether we want to or not, we better fall in line. I don’t believe that such large prominent companies would be making these announcements in such a public way if Trump was not president.”

MCDONALD’S SUED OVER LATINO SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM DAYS AFTER DITCHING SOME DEI POLICIES

Author and inclusive marketing strategist Lola Bakare agrees, telling FOX Business, “We’re seeing a tornado-like effect of the preferences of a new administration lead to a lot of poor, fear-based reactionary decision-making by companies.”

    Trump signing executive orders

She added, “I encourage people to think about the more nefarious reasons behind this administration’s decision to champion exclusion, which is the opposite of inclusion, and to abolish a number of programs, even positions, people’s jobs, in an executive order on day one without even looking into the reality of the efficaciousness of those programs.”

However, Jonathan Alpert, a psychotherapist and author, said he is seeing harmful effects from the programs.

“At their best, diversity programs should remind us that everyone deserves to be treated equally and with respect, no matter who they are,” he told FOX Business. “Unfortunately, the trend over the last few years, across so many American institutions, has been to make DEI programs into political commissars, to go after people who have different viewpoints, and they end up, in many ways, sowing more division in the institution that they’re supposed to help.”

IS DEI DYING? HERE’S THE LIST OF COMPANIES THAT HAVE ROLLED BACK THE ‘WOKE’ POLICIES

Alpert said he has seen it in therapy practice too, where patients and therapists themselves internalize so many DEI rules, they get lost in this cultural minefield, instead of just simply encouraging fair and equal treatment for everyone. He added that he has also seen in patients a fear of running afoul of “ever-changing DEI rules” and being “canceled” – which is leading to heightened anxiety in patients.

Jeremy Knauff, founder of Spartan Media, said he has seen two distinct reactions to the elimination of DEI programs, and both are equally expected. The first reaction is “Well, this seems like a good idea because we shouldn’t be making hiring decisions based on criteria like race, gender, or sexuality anyway,” and the other reaction is basically, “Anyone who doesn’t agree with these policies is clearly a racist, sexist and homophobic monster.”

He told FOX Business that from a public relations perspective, the latter is exactly why these policies are now viewed as dangerous and harmful, and why there has been such a push for them to be eliminated in recent years.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

“While there was a time for policies like these in our past, they’ve essentially been transformed to bludgeon companies and individuals into submission on a wide variety of political topics, and frankly, most people have become tired of the constant lectures and attacks,” Knauff said.

“As the saying goes, ‘You attract more flies with honey than you do with vinegar,’ and these activists have been hosing everyone down with vinegar for decades, so the outcome was completely predictable,” he added. “I’m just surprised it took this long.”

  • House Republican unveils 47-page roadmap to ‘Make America Healthy Again’

House Republican unveils 47-page roadmap to ‘Make America Healthy Again’

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, on Wednesday unveiled a lengthy report that he says serves as a “roadmap” to “Make America Healthy Again” and points to how the flawed American healthcare system impacts “national defense.”

The 47-page report – titled “The Case for Healthcare Freedom” – is a “painstakingly researched” summary of “America’s health crisis and how to address it,” Roy said.

Its findings include that U.S. healthcare spending had reached $4.9 trillion in 2023.

As a share of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP), health spending accounted for 17.6%, and costs are growing around 1% faster than the annual GDP, the report says.

The report argues that “if conservatives care about a strong national defense and low taxes, these trends have to be reversed.”

MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN: THE POWERHOUSE FOODS THAT WORK MEDICAL MAGIC

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, attends Donald Trump’s inauguration in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 20, 2025, in Washington, D.C. (Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)

“The Case for Healthcare Freedom lays out a detailed roadmap for how Congressional Republicans can help President Trump deliver on the promise to address America’s health crisis,” Roy said in a statement. “The problem isn’t just health insurance, or Big Pharma, or food additives that are making us unhealthy; it’s the fact that politicians, bureaucrats and corporations are all benefitting from a broken, cronyistic system that lets them put profits over patients with impunity.”

Roy argued that right now, Congress has “a tremendous opportunity to put American healthcare back on track by embracing the empowerment of patients and doctors through the promotion of expansive health savings accounts in the budget reconciliation process, and we need to take full advantage.” The congressman went on to say, “giving the same actors more power and money won’t work; if we want to Make America Healthy Again, the answer is healthcare freedom. If we want to control our budgets and healthcare spending, the answer is healthcare freedom.”

The wide-ranging report comes just two days after President Donald Trump was sworn into a second term. The pledge to “Make America Healthy Again” became a focal point of Trump’s campaign when Democrat turned Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dropped out of the race and backed him. Trump tapped Kennedy to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, but his confirmation hearing has not yet been scheduled.

The report includes criticism of the program providing food welfare assistance for low-income households.

FORMER TRUMP HHS OFFICIAL TAPPED TO BE RFK JR’S CHIEF OF STAFF: REPORT

“While chronic food illness kills up to 678,000 Americans per year, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will likely pay over $250 billion on junk food for the next 10 years,” Roy’s office notes.

The report also targets the coveted weight loss and diabetes drugs championed as “miracle medication,” which has even used by celebrities to drop pounds in recent months. It found the Danish pharmaceutical company, Novo Nordisk, “spent at least $25.8 million over the past decade on U.S. medical professionals to promote two of its obesity drugs, Wegovy and Saxenda.”

The report assesses that families and their employers on average in 2024 spent $25,000 annually, or nearly the cost of a company car, for health insurance, and that’s despite “the false promise of Obamacare to lower premiums by $2,500 a year.” The cost of premiums has increased at least 100% since 2010, according to the report.

“Obamacare has made healthcare so expensive that it now subsidizes households earning up to $600,000 per year for their health insurance,” the report says.

In 2024, the report found, four of the top five American industries by revenue were healthcare-related. Those were hospitals, which came in first; drug, cosmetics and toiletry wholesaling, which came second; health insurance, which earned the third place slot; and pharmaceutical wholesaling, which came in fifth.

The report also discusses how 47% of hospital cash prices are lower than the insurer-negotiated price “that people pay hundreds of dollars a month for the privilege of having.”

The report argues multiple insurance companies, including UnitedHealth, Anthem/Elevance, and Humana, “earn” a majority of their revenue from taxpayers.

“We do not have a free market in the healthcare system. The government controls more than 80% of health spending,” according to a summary of the report provided by Roy’s office. “The Left’s solution to fix our healthcare system is spending even more money and giving the government even further control over the healthcare system. ‘Medicare for All’ would cost an additional $33 trillion over 10 years, and it would leave 70% of Americans financially worse off.”
