Amazon workers in North Carolina vote against unionizing

Amazon workers in North Carolina have voted against a proposal to unionize, a win for the retail giant in its fight against organized labor at its facilities.

About 4,300 employees at an Amazon fulfillment center in Garner, a suburb of Raleigh, were eligible to cast ballots in last week’s voting to decide whether to join a grassroots labor organization called Carolina Amazonians United for Solidarity and Empowerment, the National Labor Relations Board said.

Amazon workers voted at the warehouse nearly 3-to-1 against joining former and current Amazon workers in the independent union.

The federal labor agency said 2,447 workers voted against unionizing while 829 voted in favor of joining the union.

An Amazon spokeswoman said Saturday that the company already offers workers safe and inclusive workplaces and competitive pay, items in line with what most unions request.

“We’re glad that our team in Garner was able to have their voices heard, and that they chose to keep a direct relationship with Amazon,” Amazon spokesperson Eileen Hards said in a statement.

Amazon’s efforts to stop organized labor from forming at its facilities haven’t always been successful.

Last month, workers at a Whole Foods location in Philadelphia made history as the first group to successfully unionize under the grocery chain, which is owned by Amazon.

Amazon CEO ‘relieved’ after Hamas releases employee taken hostage on Oct. 7

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy sent a message to employees saying he was “incredibly relieved” that Alexander (Sasha) Troufanov was released from Hamas captivity after being held hostage for nearly 500 days.

“I’m incredibly relieved to share the news that our AWS teammate, Sasha Troufanov, who had been held hostage since the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel, has been released from captivity,” Jassy wrote in a message to employees.

Jassy says that the company had a team of experts working with Troufanov’s family “behind the scenes” to secure his release. The exec explained that Amazon “painfully” could not comment on Troufanov’s abduction publicly “for fear that we would negatively impact their ability to be released or how they were treated in captivity.”

Amazon faced criticism in May 2024 when it was revealed that Troufanov worked for the company, as many noted that the company hadn’t said anything publicly. Some at the time speculated that Amazon was keeping quiet to protect itself and its brand. However, billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, a vocal supporter of Israel, gave the online shopping giant the benefit of the doubt.

Troufanov was working at Amazon Web Services as an electrical engineer when he was kidnapped during Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7 attacks. He was taken hostage with his mother, grandmother and girlfriend, all of whom were released in November 2023 while he remained in captivity. Troufanov’s father was killed during the attacks.

“It’s been an extremely trying time for everybody who knows and cares for Sasha — a lot of angst and feelings of helplessness. But, it can’t approach what Sasha and his family have been through, and we will continue to support them and do everything we can to help them heal,” Jassy wrote in his February 2025 message. He also said that his “heart goes out to everyone impacted by the war” and expressed hope that there would be a “long-term peaceful path.”

On Saturday, Troufanov was released alongside Iair Horn and Sagui Dekel-Chen, who is an American citizen. However, this almost did not happen as days before their release, Hamas threatened to delay it over alleged ceasefire violations by Israel.

President Donald Trump then said Israel should “let all hell break out” if Hamas did not release all the remaining hostages by 12 p.m. eastern on Saturday. The terror group eventually walked back its threat on Thursday, saying the release would go on as planned.

After more than 15 months of war, on Jan. 19, Israel and Hamas entered a ceasefire deal in which 33 hostages are expected to be released in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.

  • Amazon to settle lawsuit alleging it stole drivers’ tips to save labor costs

Amazon to settle lawsuit alleging it stole drivers’ tips to save labor costs

Amazon has agreed to pay $3.95 million to settle a lawsuit in which it was accused of subsidizing its labor costs by stealing the tips its drivers received to cover part of the employees’ base wages, D.C. Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb announced Friday.

According to Schwalb, Amazon misled consumers in Washington, D.C., between 2016 and 2019 by assuring them that all the tips they provided would go to Amazon’s Flex drivers, employees who deliver packages with their own cars.

Schwalb’s office alleged that by diverting millions of dollars in tips, Amazon was able to save on its own operating costs and therefore increase profits.

“When companies mislead customers to boost their profits by stealing tips intended for their workers, they are cheating their consumers, their employees, and their competitors who play by the rules,” Schwalb said.

AMAZON SUED FOR ALLEGEDLY STEALING MORE THAN $1M IN TIPS FROM DELIVERY WORKERS

Amazon said in a statement to Fox News Digital that the company disagrees with the allegations, noting that Amazon Flex has evolved since then.

“For nearly a decade, Amazon Flex has empowered delivery partners to earn extra money on their own schedules,” Amazon spokesperson Steve Kelly said. “Like any successful program, Amazon Flex has evolved over time, and this lawsuit relates to a practice we changed more than five years ago. While we continue to disagree with these allegations, we’re happy to have the matter behind us so we can continue to focus on supporting delivery partners and customers.

When Amazon Flex launched in 2015, consumers were able to tip their delivery drivers at checkout, which stated that 100% of the tips would go to the drivers.

The lawsuit claimed that Amazon changed its driver payment model the following year, and that instead of allowing the tips to increase the driver’s total compensation, the company used it to cover the employees’ base wages Amazon had already promised to pay the drivers.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, the payment model change was not disclosed to the drivers or the consumers, allowing the model to continue taking tips until 2019, when Amazon became “aware of the FTC’s investigation in 2019.”

The company was accused of stealing more than $1 million in tips to cover its labor expenses.

As part of a settlement with the FTC in 2021, all the customer tips at issue were eventually paid to the drivers, according to an Amazon spokesperson at that time.

Aside from the restitution-only settlement with the FTC, the attorney general’s office filed a lawsuit for injunctive relief and civil penalties, noting that additional penalties were warranted to disincentivize unlawful behavior.

“It’s not sufficient, after being caught, to simply give back the ill-gotten gains,” Schwalb said. “Rather, there must be meaningful consequences to deter misconduct from happening in the first place. Especially when living expenses are harder and harder to afford, my office will continue to ensure that hardworking District residents receive every penny of their earnings and consumers have confidence that they are not being misled.”

According to the settlement, Amazon has denied all the allegations and claims.

“Amazon maintains that it made truthful, complete, unambiguous, and accurate representations to customers regarding tips for drivers,” the settlement stated.

According to the settlement terms, Amazon will pay $3.95 million, including $2.45 million in penalties and $1.5 million in costs.

The company has also agreed to maintain transparent tipping practices.

“If Amazon uses tips for any purpose other than increasing driver compensation, the company must make clear disclosures about how tips are used on both its website and its app,” the settlement stated.

Amazon increases ad spending on X in major reversal: report

Amazon has increased its ad spending on X, which is owned by Elon Musk, more than a year after it removed many of its advertisements from the platform, according to a report.

Other companies like Apple cut some or all of their spending over concerns of rising hate speech after Elon Musk, a confidante of President Donald Trump and head of the Department of Government Efficiency, bought the platform in 2022.

Musk has called himself a “free speech absolutist.”

Apple, which cut all of its spending on X in 2023, is now reevaluating, as are other brands, The Wall Street Journal reported.

But some companies are returning to the platform with ad buys still much lower than before Musk bought Twitter, which he renamed X, according to the Journal.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and other tech CEOs, like Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Apple head Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, all attended Trump’s inauguration last week, and Amazon, Meta and Apple all donated to Trump’s inaugural committee.

New ad revenue could be crucial for X, which is still struggling after Musk bought it for $44 billion.
