NHL announcer cracks tariff joke while calling game for Canada-based team

Even Canada-based NHL teams aren’t safe from feeling the brunt of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on the country.

Mere hours after Trump’s executive order to impose tariffs on Canada, both Ottawa Senators and Toronto Raptors fans booed the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Vancouver Canucks fans did the same on Sunday night against the Detroit Red Wings, but there was more to be had.

During the first period, Vancouver defenseman Derek Forbot was assessed a two-minute penalty for interference. That prompted longtime Canucks announcer John Shorthourse to facetiously say that the penalty would actually be 25% longer.

“This will actually be a two-and-a-half minute power play for the Detroit Red Wings, due to the 25% tariff that has been imposed on penalties to Canadian-based teams,” Shorthouse said.

Vancouver was able to kill the penalty, with the ending of the first period benefiting them.

Vancouver tied the game midway through the third after newcomer Filip Chytil scored, but Detroit would win, 3-2, in overtime.

Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke via phone on Monday, hours before additional 25% tariffs were to take effect on Canadian goods coming into the United States. In a post on X, Trudeau said Canada will implement a $1.3 billion border plan and appoint a fentanyl czar.

Trump has long said Canada and Mexico have failed to do enough to prevent the flow of illegal migrants and drugs, particularly fentanyl, from those nations into the U.S. In addition, Trump claims the U.S. has subsidized Canada to the tune of $200 billion annually.

Trump had promised to impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian and Mexican goods, as well as a 10% tariff on Canadian energy and a 10% tariff on all goods entering the U.S. from China. The tariffs on China were set to go into effect Tuesday at midnight.

Luka Doncic details Lakers trade ‘shock’ at introductory press conference

Luka Doncic was introduced as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers Tuesday, days after the team acquired him in a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Mavericks.

The trade sent shock waves across the sports world. The Lakers sent Anthony Davis and Max Christie to Dallas in a three-team deal that included the Utah Jazz.

The Slovenian superstar said he woke up in the middle of the night to the call informing him he was on the move.

“I was almost asleep when I got a call. I had to check to see if it was April 1. I didn’t really believe it at first. It was a big shock,” the 25-year-old said, via FOX 4 News.

He opened up about the emotions he felt as he had to leave the Dallas area, a place he’s called home since the Mavericks acquired him during the 2018 NBA Draft in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks.

“It was a big shock,” Doncic said. “(Dallas) was home, so it was really hard moments for me. … (But now) I get to play in the greatest club in the world, and I’m excited for this new journey.

“Honestly, it was hard at first,” he added. “That first day was really hard. I felt like these last 48 hours was one month. Emotionally, it was really hard, but today was much better. This is the Lakers. It’s one of the best clubs in history, so I’m excited to be here.”

Doncic said he was looking forward to playing alongside LeBron James, who he’s described as his idol.

“It’s just like a dream come true,” Doncic said. “I always looked up to him. There’s so many things I can learn from him, and I’m just excited to learn everything and get to play with him. It’s an amazing feeling.”

Doncic has not played since Christmas because he’s been dealing with a calf strain. He will participate in 5-on-5 work Wednesday, and the Lakers will later decide when he will make his debut in purple and gold.

Eagles’ Brandon Graham expects to play in Super Bowl LIX after what he thought was career-ending injury

A little over two months ago, 36-year-old Brandon Graham was contemplating whether he had played his last NFL snap after tearing his triceps.

Shortly after the injury, the Philadelphia Eagles pass rusher emotionally admitted that it was “pointing toward” his career not ending on his own terms.

Graham even admitted that he was “content” if he were to never play another down – but he seems to have reversed course.

During Super Bowl LIX opening night in New Orleans, Graham said he is “feeling good” and is “excited to be able to play in this game.”

Graham has several hurdles to leap in order to play – a successful week of practice is rather important, but Graham said he is “just enjoying the moment.”

“When I got hurt, I saw it as a possibility,” he said, regarding playing in the Super Bowl. “I talked to people and they said it was a possibility. I rehabbed as hard as I could… So when the time came they would give me the chance.”

TRUMP EXPECTED TO ATTEND SUPER BOWL LIX IN NEW ORLEANS

Graham was on the losing side of the Super Bowl two years ago against Kansas City when he made little impact during his 18 defensive snaps on a slick field that made rushing the passer difficult for everyone.

He did, however, cause the strip-sack against Tom Brady in Super Bowl LII that catapulted the Birds to that title.

Graham’s return would provide an emotional boost, but he hopes to deliver more than that. He had 3.5 sacks in his 11 games before getting hurt.

Trump offers Tiger Woods his condolences after death of golfer’s mom

President Donald Trump reacted to the death of Tiger Woods’ mom, Kultida, on Tuesday.

The president’s statement on Truth Social was posted a few minutes after the legendary golfer announced the death of his 78-year-old mother.

“I was just informed that Tiger Woods’ wonderful Mother, Kultida, passed away — She has gone onto greener fairways!” Trump’s wrote in a post. “Kultida Woods was an amazing influence on Tiger, and gave him much of his strength and brilliance. Melania and I send our love and prayers to Tiger and his incredible family!”

Trump honored Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his first team. Kultida Woods was at the White House for that ceremony.

Woods made the announcement about the death of his mother in a post on X.

She was loved by so many, but especially by her two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie.

Tiger was Kultida and Earl Woods’ only child together. Tiger has a few half-siblings from his father’s first marriage. Kultida met Earl while he was on tour of duty in the military in Thailand. She was of Thai, Chinese and Dutch descent.

ESPN noted that Tiger, whose real name is Eldrick, was named after his mother and father. The name Eldrick began with an E – in honor of Earl – and ended with a K – in honor of Kultida.

Chiefs’ Travis Kelce asks reporters, ‘Why are you guys leaning into this whole ref thing?’

Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce was asked on Monday night if he had a question for the media as reporters gathered at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans ahead of Super Bowl LIX.

Kelce swung for the fences.

“Why are you guys leaning into this whole ref thing?” Kelce asked. “You know what I mean? Like, why are you guys leaning into it? That’s all I got though.”

Alleged favoritism from NFL officials to the Chiefs has been a major topic of conversation since Kansas City defeated the Houston Texans in the divisional round. Two questionable penalties called in favor of the Chiefs sparked the conversation on social media.

But after a few head-scratchers in the AFC Championship against the Buffalo Bills, the social media chatter was taken from the keyboard to the Roger Goodell press conference on Monday.

Goodell threw cold water on the notion that there was any favoritism toward the Chiefs.

“This sort of reminds me a little bit of ‘the script,’ right? That I write a script and I have a script for the entire seasons,” he said. “I think a lot of those theories are things that happen in social media, and they get a new life.… Nobody wants it to be their theory.

“I understand it. I think it reflects a lot of the fans’ passion. I think it’s also a reminder for us on how important officiating is. I think the men and women officiating the NFL are outstanding. They have the highest possible standards. That’s a ridiculous theory for anyone who might take it seriously, but at the end of the day, it’s something we always have to continue to work on, how we make our officiating better at all times.”

Chiefs team owner Clark Hunt also dismantled the theory.

“You almost have to laugh at it, because you know how everybody in the NFL wants to compete to win, and that’s true of our guys as well. The referees are doing the best job that they can. If you look at the stats or a lot of stats, that shows that we’ve been on the wrong side of calls as often as we’ve been on the right side.” Hunt said in an interview with NFL Network.

Chiefs owner dismantles conspiracy theory about refs’ favoritism: ‘You almost have to laugh’

Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt shut down the conspiracy theory that the referees are helping the team win.

Hunt, 59, said he thinks that people are using the referee favoritism theory as an excuse as to why the Chiefs have been so successful.

“You almost have to laugh at it, because you know how everybody in the NFL wants to compete to win, and that’s true of our guys as well. The referees are doing the best job that they can. If you look at the stats or a lot of stats, that shows that we’ve been on the wrong side of calls as often as we’ve been on the right side.” Hunt said in an interview with NFL Network.

In the Chiefs’ win over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship, there were two calls in particular that drove the conversation regarding the referees.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen’s failed fourth-down conversion on a QB sneak became a hotly debated topic because some observers questioned whether the Chiefs actually stopped him short of a first down.

Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy’s reception while battling with Bills safety Cole Bishop for the ball in the first half also had fans skeptical that the referees made the right call because it looked like Bishop had a good hold on the ball.

Regardless of the penalties that draw the ire of fans, one of the main reasons for the Chiefs’ sustained excellence is quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ play in the playoffs.

“I think it’s true of all the great ones, and it really doesn’t matter what sport we’re talking about. Basketball, football, hockey, soccer, baseball, the great ones in the most important moments are at their very best and Patrick has shown that every year. Regardless of his stats during the regular season, he always elevates his game when we get to the playoffs, and he’s definitely done that recently. Hopefully, that will continue through this weekend,” Hunt said.

If Mahomes continues his level of excellent play in the postseason, the Chiefs will have a good chance to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

Hunt said anytime you have a chance to play in the Super Bowl it is special, but this Super Bowl means a little more because of a chance at making history.

“Any opportunity you have to play in the Super Bowl is always special. Obviously, this year has a little bit more too it because we have a chance to make history. It’s something that we’ve been aware of the whole year. Coach Reid has done a great job of keeping the guys focused because you don’t get here unless you pay attention each week, take that week’s opponent as seriously as you can and play your best football. And here we are, we’ve got the opportunity and I know our guys are excited about it.”

Trump expected to attend Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans

President Donald Trump is expected to attend Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans on Sunday to watch the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

Trump would be the first sitting president to attend the game, according to the New York Post. Punchbowl News first reported the president was expected to head to Caesars Superdome for the game. The Associated Press confirmed the report, citing a White House official.

A source familiar with the matter also told Fox News Digital he would be at the game.

The president has attended college football games over the last few years. He made his presence felt at the Alabama-Georgia game in September and attended the Army-Navy game after he won the election over Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump didn’t attend many NFL games the first time around as he clashed with players’ decision to kneel for the national anthem as a form of protest against social injustice. He was at the Pittsburgh Steelers’ game against the New York Jets in October after a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

He will have plenty of fans in attendance at the game. Brittany Mahomes and her mother-in-law Randi both supported the president during his re-election campaign.

NFL to remove ‘End Racism’ phrase from end zones for Super Bowl LIX

The words “End Racism” will not be featured in the back of end zones during Super Bowl LIX between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Instead, the phrases “Choose Love” and “It Takes All of Us” will be emblazoned in the end zones at the Caesars Superdome. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told The Athletic on Tuesday the decision came amid the recent tragedies that have occurred in the U.S. since the start of 2025, including the terror attack in New Orleans, wildfires in the Los Angeles area and the deadly plane crash near a Washington, D.C., airport.

“We felt it was an appropriate statement for what the country has collectively endured, given recent tragedies, and can serve as an inspiration,” he told the outlet.

McCarthy added that “End Racism” was only seen during the Eagles’ NFC Championship win against the Washington Commanders. The AFC Championship, in which the Chiefs topped the Buffalo Bills, included the aforementioned phrases.

The “End Racism” stencil debuted in 2020 after a summer of racial turmoil in the U.S. The phrase was featured in the Chiefs’ end zone in last year’s Super Bowl. The San Francisco 49ers had “It Takes All of Us.”

The NFL’s move to remove it for the Super Bowl came as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell defended the league’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies.

“We got into diversity efforts because we felt like it was the right thing for the National Football League, and we’re going to continue those efforts because we’ve not only convinced ourselves, we’ve proven ourselves, that it does make the NFL better,” Goodell said. “We’re not in this because it’s a trend to get in or a trend to get out of it.

“Our efforts are fundamental in trying to attract the best possible talent in the National Football League, both on and off the field, as I said previously. We see that. We see how it benefits the National Football League, and so I think we’ll continue those efforts.”

Goodell said the league’s DEI efforts were a reflection of the foundation of the league.

“I think it’s also clearly a reflection on our fan base and our communities and our players. People talk a lot about the Rooney Rule… for us there’s no requirement to hire a particular individual on the basis of race or gender. It’s simply on the basis of looking at a campus of candidates that reflect our communities and to look at the kind of talent that exists there, and then you make the best decision on who is hired,” he added.

Tiger Woods announces death of his mother Kultida Woods

Tiger Woods on Tuesday announced that his mother, Kultida, has died. She was 78.

The legendary PGA Tour golfer made the announcement in post on X. He attached a statement and a picture of her in the post. He asked for privacy as he and his family grieved.

NFL’s Roger Goodell talks about possibility of expanding regular season to 18 games

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spoke about the possibility of an 18-game regular season ahead of Super Bowl LIX during a press conference on Monday.

Goodell said that there is “a lot of work to be done” before expanding the season to 18 games and said he has not had any formal discussions with the players’ union about adding a game.

The commissioner did say that he has had informal discussions with NFL Players Association Executive Director Lloyd Howell Jr. about making the jump to 18 games.

“If we do (expand), 18 (regular season games) and two (preseason games) might be a possibility,” Goodell said.

“We know fans love football, and they want more football, but we have to be incredibly sensitive and smart with the balance and how we deal with that.”

Goodell said the changes the league has made to reduce concussions and other injuries have made adding another game more feasible. He spoke in April on “The Pat McAfee Show” about his desire to extend the NFL regular season to 18 games, instead of the 17 game season right now.

The NFL made the jump to 17 games prior to the 2021 season, when they went from playing 16 regular season games and four preseason games to 17 regular season games and three preseason games.

Should the NFL decide to expand the regular season, the Super Bowl would then be pushed back to Presidents’ Day weekend.

Pushing the Super Bowl back to the holiday weekend would allow fans to not have to worry about work or school the next day, allowing them to fully enjoy the big game.

In this year’s Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs will take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
