  • Falcons’ Michael Penix Jr shares crucial advice Kirk Cousins gave him after taking over as starter

Falcons’ Michael Penix Jr shares crucial advice Kirk Cousins gave him after taking over as starter

No player in the NFL wants to have their starting role removed, especially not a team’s franchise quarterback.

Atlanta Falcons veteran Kirk Cousins had to deal with that reality ahead of Week 15, amid a division title race no less, when head coach Raheem Morris said he was turning to Michael Penix Jr. to play under center.

Cousins had been struggling despite coming off a 15-9 win over the Las Vegas Raiders the week prior. Before that game, four straight losses saw Atlanta dip under .500. So, Morris had Penix face the New York Giants for his first career start.

Speaking with Fox News Digital on Radio Row ahead of Super Bowl LIX, Penix explained the key advice he gathered from Cousins, who he had watched and studied all season.

“Just let the game come to you and be patient,” Penix said while also discussing his partnership with Sharpie. “Even if you call a shot play, or a big play, you don’t have to take the big play if it’s not there. A lot of the stuff I learned from him was a lot of visual things, just the way he moved through his progression, getting to his fifth read, that’s hard to do, especially at the level we’re playing at. Hearing him in meetings talking about how he got to that last read, how he canceled out stuff early and stuff like that, it helped me out when I got in there early.”

Penix’s first start didn’t see his first career touchdown pass, but he went 18-for-27 for 202 yards with an interception. With help from his defense, which scored two touchdowns on the lowly Giants, the Falcons won 34-7, hitting 8-7 on the season.

Penix said the usual jitters weren’t there thanks to seeing a few snaps in losses earlier in the season, as well as preseason play. But he also knows nothing can prepare you for that first start… unless you’re acting like a starter each week.

He said his biggest takeaway from the season was having the mindset of always being ready, which may need to happen next year as well with Cousins remaining under contract despite Morris turning to his young rookie at the end of the season.

“I feel like I always had to be ready because I didn’t know when my time was going to be,” he said. “Whenever it did come, I wanted to be ready for that moment. Each and every day, I prepared like I was the starter. I prepared like I was going to be out there. So, whenever that moment did come, it didn’t seem like a surprise for me.”

Penix couldn’t lead the Falcons to the NFC South title, losing his final two starts of his rookie campaign. However, he showed flashes of why the Falcons were so high on him with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Heading into his sophomore season, Penix will continue working hard with his mindset not changing. But his experience with Cousins shows that, while the veteran gunslinger wants to remain a starter in the league, he’s willing to teach the next generation in his quarterbacks room.

    ‘PASSING THE PEN’ WITH SHARPIE

Penix was among Sharpie’s “Rookies of the Year,” which marked the inaugural class as they headed into their professional journeys. From signing day, to his My Cause My Cleats this season, Sharpie has allowed Penix to add a personal touch to his rookie moments.

Now, he’s ready to “pass the pen” to the next class, which includes top NFL prospects Ashton Jeanty out of Boise State and Tetairoa McMillan from Arizona. He shared his love for their respective game.

“Those two in particular, I played against T-Mac, McMillan, just seeing him live, he makes big-time plays,” he said. “He’s a great receiver and he’s going to do a great job in this league, and with Sharpie. I’m looking forward to it. With Ashton, the year that he had, coming second in Heisman, I did that last year, too. The year he had as a running back at the college level, it was something that was very special, and he was almost put at number on as far as yards and stuff like that. Big kudos to you guys.”

As a lefty, Penix has had to deal with smudges all over his work from a young age. But he showed his appreciation for the Sharpie S-Gel with it’s “No Smear, No Smudge Technology.”

“It was crazy. It sucked when you didn’t have that Sharpie pen in your hand, but I found the solution now, so I’m super excited to be able to do that,” he said.

Former NFL star Shaun Alexander supports Trump’s plan to ban trans athletes from girls and women’s sports

Former NFL star running back Shaun Alexander has taken a position on the debate over trans inclusion in girls and women’s sports.

The three-time Pro Bowler expressed his support for President Donald Trump’s executive order banning trans inclusion against females, during an interview on “The Ricky Cobb Show” on Wednesday. Alexander cited his experience as a father to nine daughters for his stance on the issue.

“I think it’s a good thing,” Alexander said of Trump’s executive order. “My daughters train so hard… for them to train so hard to get to where they are and then to see people who have genetics, they have younger brothers who can compete with them already and they’re 14, so you know, if you’re the same age competing with a boy, that’s just hard, just body structure alone is just hard. So I’m really happy for all the girls.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed the “No Men in Women’s Sports” executive order, fulfilling one of his major campaign promises of keeping biological men out of girls and women’s sports.

“This doesn’t have to be long. It’s all about common sense,” Trump said before signing the order, adding that “women’s sports will be only for women.”

Trump declared, “the war on women’s sports is over.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a briefing before Trump signed the executive order that it “upholds the promise of Title IX.”

“President Trump pledged to restore common sense to our country and he’s continuing to deliver on that with an executive order that he will sign later today,” she added. “The president will be signing an executive order, keeping men out of women’s sports to defend the safety of athletes, protect competitive integrity and uphold the promise of Title IX.

“This common-sense action from President Trump ends the disgusting betrayal of women and girls by the previous administration, who for years catered to radical activists who wanted biological males to be treated as women in workplace, showers, competitive sports, prisons and even rape shelters. Gender ideology insanity is over.”

Leavitt also called on Senate lawmakers to pass the Protection of Women and Girls Sports Act, which the House passed last month. The bill would ban biological males from participating on girls’ school sports teams. The bill would amend federal law to specify that student athletes must participate in school sports teams that coincide with their gender at birth.

  • NCAA VP suggests changes are coming to trans athlete policy after Trump’s executive order is signed

NCAA VP suggests changes are coming to trans athlete policy after Trump’s executive order is signed

With President Donald Trump set to sign an executive order banning trans athletes from girls’ and women’s sports on Wednesday, the NCAA is already bracing for a potential change to its current rules that allow trans athletes to compete with women.

Vice president of the NCAA’s Eligibility Center, Felicia Martin, spoke at a congressional briefing in Washington on Wednesday to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day and suggested that the NCAA Board of Governors is already discussing potential policy changes after Trump’s executive order goes into effect.

SIGN UP FOR TUBI AND STREAM SUPER BOWL LIX FOR FREE

“We know that this is an issue and a national conversation happening around participation,” she said. “The Board of Governors is right now having conversations about what potential next steps night be, but this is absolutely one of those issues that is ongoing, but without a national standard that can be applied across the board, all of us are making decisions based on what we think is the best for student athletes and opportunities.”

Martin added that she expects more clarity on a national standard later in the day from Trump. She also said that the Board of Governors would make its decisions on any policy changes based on the specific details of the executive order.

In addition to Trump’s executive order, the NCAA may get even more clarity on an incoming federal standard if the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act passes through Congress. The bill, which would ban federal funding for any institution that allows trans athletes in girls’ and women’s sports, has already made it through the House of Representatives.

HOW TO WATCH SUPER BOWL LIX BETWEEN CHIEFS, EAGLES STREAMED ON TUBI

The NCAA has had a policy in place to allow trans athletes to compete against women dating back to 2010. The 2010 NCAA Policy on Transgender Student-Athlete Participation states that biologically male athletes are allowed to compete in the women’s category after undergoing at least one year of testosterone suppression treatment.

This policy has resulted in multiple lawsuits against the NCAA and its member schools. Former NCAA swimmer and current conservative activist Riley Gaines is currently leading a lawsuit over her experience of having to compete with and share a locker room with trans swimmer Lia Thomas at the 2022 national championships. She is joined by several other women athletes who have also been affected by trans inclusion.

Another lawsuit was filed Tuesday evening, when three of Thomas’ former UPenn teammates came forward with their own experiences of having to share a team and locker room with Thomas and were allegedly gaslit by their university administrators and fed pro-trans ideology.

NCAA President Charlie Baker addressed concerns over the issue of female athletes having to share teams and locker rooms with trans athletes during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in December. There, Baker insisted that female athletes have the option to find other accommodations if they’re uncomfortable sharing with transgenders.

“Everybody else should have an opportunity to use other facilities if they wish to do so,” Baker said.

Baker also says that the NCAA’s policies that allow trans athletes to compete against women are based on federal standards.

HOW TRANSGENDERISM IN SPORTS SHIFTED THE 2024 ELECTION AND IGNITED A NATIONAL COUNTERCULTURE

Baker has also attempted to downplay the scale of the issue. Baker addressed the issue again during an interview on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” days after the hearing. When McAfee asked Baker how the parents of daughters should feel about trans athletes in women’s sports and the NCAA’s record on it, Baker said, “There are 510,000 college athletes playing in the NCAA, there are less than 10 transgender athletes, so it’s a small community to begin with.”

However, despite that statistic, the issue has become a national debate over the last year, with several other instances of it happening at the youth and high school level, prompting national outrage.

Of the 1,025 people who identified as Democrats or leaning Democrat, 67% said transgender athletes should not be allowed to compete with women.

The issue is even believed to have affected the outcome of the 2024 election.

Shortly after November’s election, a national exit poll conducted by the Concerned Women for America legislative action committee found that 70% of moderate voters saw the issue of “Donald Trump’s opposition to transgender boys and men playing girls’ and women’s sports and of transgender boys and men using girls’ and women’s bathrooms” as important to them.

And 6% said it was the most important issue of all, while 44% said it was “very important.”

President Donald Trump expects the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and the NCAA to comply with his executive order barring biological men from women’s sports, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a briefing on Wednesday.

“He does expect the Olympic committee and the NCAA to no longer allow men to compete in women’s sports,” Leavitt said. “I think the president, with the signing of his pen, starts a very public pressure campaign on these organizations to do the right thing for women and for girls.

“Again, this is an incredibly popular position. There have been many notable female athletes who have had the courage to speak out against some very powerful institutions in this country. They deserve to have a voice and a say. The president is bringing their voice to the highest level of the White House. He expects these organizations to comply with this federal executive order he will be signing today.”

The U.S. Olympic team has not featured a transgender woman. It has featured an athlete who was transgender nonbinary. Laurel Hubbard, a transgender woman, competed in weightlifting for the New Zealand team. Canadian soccer player Quinn came out as nonbinary and transgender in 2020.

The 2024 Paris Olympics included a gender controversy concerning two boxers who competed in the women’s division. The International Olympic Committee made clear each boxer was eligible to compete in female weight classes.

Trump made fairness in women’s sports a major campaign issue on his way to winning the presidential election over former Vice President Kamala Harris in November.

At the beginning of January, a federal judge blocked the Biden administration’s attempt to redefine sex in Title IX as “gender identity.” Then, Trump’s Department of Education told K-12 schools and higher learning institutions that Title IX protections would be recognized on the basis of biological sex.

Trump made clear in December he was going to end the “transgender lunacy.”

Trump is expected to be with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the paper reported.

The Chiefs star joined the team when they made their White House trip to celebrate Super Bowl LVIII’s victory over the San Francisco 49ers with then-President Joe Biden. Kelce joked at the time he was told he’d be tased if he came up to the podium and stole the spotlight.

  • Jets stars share lessons learned through adversity from rollercoaster 2024 season

Jets stars share lessons learned through adversity from rollercoaster 2024 season

When adversity presents itself in any situation, it is usually never the natural reaction to overcome it.

Adversity weighs on a person, sometimes to the point when it seems too hard to let go of.

For the New York Jets, despite all their talent in 2024, adversity faced them from seemingly all facets in a 5-12 roller coaster of a season. However, the greatest part of adversity is the natural lessons it teaches, and Jets star defenders Jermaine Johnson and Quincy Williams learned something valuable through their personal and team struggles.

For Johnson, the personal tribulation happened almost immediately in the regular season. A torn Achilles was the result of what Johnson said he knew was something serious in Tennessee for the team’s Week 2 game against the Titans. The cart coming out and the towel over his head said it all.

Johnson spoke to Fox News Digital on behalf of Bounty ahead of Super Bowl LIX when he revealed the lesson he learned in overcoming the first major injury he has had to recover from in his NFL career.

“What I’ve been through with this whole experience is me getting to where I am in life, it doesn’t matter what you’re presented with. It matters how you respond to what you’re presented with,” he said. “So, I just had to make sure I responded the right way and came out swinging every day. That’s what I did, and now I’m ready to help these guys swing.”

HOW TO WATCH SUPER BOWL LIX BETWEEN CHIEFS, EAGLES STREAMED ON TUBI

Johnson thanked his doctors and rehab staff for getting him right, as well as teammate Aaron Rodgers, who suffered a similar Achilles tear in 2023 after just four snaps into his Jets tenure. Miami Dolphins edge rusher Jaelan Phillips is also someone Johnson mentioned as helpful throughout his rehab process.

Additionally, Johnson heard the news he has wanted to hear since his surgery was successful.

“This past Saturday, I’m pretty much in the clear,” he revealed. “Now, [my doctor] is like, ‘This thing is not re-tearing. You’re good, you’re in the clear.’”

Johnson said his doctor even noted he could be more explosive post-injury because of how well the rehab went, which is rare for injuries of this sort.

While Johnson was focused on getting back right for the Jets next season, he was also watching his brothers on the gridiron dealing with tough losses, speculation and reports from the media about lack of cohesion in the team’s building and more.

    Jermaine Johnson carted off field

They might have finished the year with a win over the Miami Dolphins, but this was supposed to be a team ready to break their playoff drought, which now stands at 14 years.

Williams was a key piece in yet another top-three Jets defense in yards allowed per game. However, after dealing with another season under .500, Williams said he has learned about being dealt certain cards just like Johnson had – just in a different way.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

“Basically, no matter what in life, you’re always going to hit adversity,” Williams said. “But it’s all about how you respond. It’s kind of crazy because it’s all about what he said, but I learned that lesson in a different way. What’s most important at the end of the day is just keeping the outside noise the outside noise.”

Williams even shaded some of that outside noise.

“I did learn one thing, though. A lot of people don’t have a clue what they be talking about. So, perspective is a very huge thing,” he added.

Even though the Jets once again did not meet expectations, two key players for the team’s future are looking optimistically into the future, taking the bad times and learning from them to make sure the right path is taken in 2025.

Of course, injuries come with playing in the NFL. Sometimes, those are totally unavoidable.

However, Johnson and Williams are showing that these players are ones hunting wins, wanting to get better even in the worst of times.

That certainly bodes well for new head coach Aaron Glenn and his staff, with a Jets locker room “tired of losing,” as both players mentioned.

    STAYING CLEAN WITH BOUNTY

Another Super Bowl means another Super Bowl party that many will be attending this year. That means there will be some delicious eats, and wings are usually on the menu no matter where you go for the “Big Game.”

That was what Johnson and Williams were munching on during the interview, and the former even dropped a wing, which spoke to the reason why they both partnered with Bounty. They needed a sturdy paper towel to clean it up.

“You can have all the best food in the world, you can have the best party, but think about how messed up things can get with somebody’s hands all dirty, somebody spilled something. Look, what I’ve learned in life is, you may not be responsible for the mess, or you may be. Nevertheless, you need something to clean it up and do a good job. So, we got Bounty.”

  • Harrison Butker’s faith has rubbed off on Patrick Mahomes, teammates, Chiefs owner’s daughter says

Harrison Butker’s faith has rubbed off on Patrick Mahomes, teammates, Chiefs owner’s daughter says

Harrison Butker may have garnered criticism last year off the field, but according to Gracie Hunt, the daughter of the Kansas City Chiefs owner, his presence in the locker room is certainly felt.

Butker became a rather polarizing figure last offseason after he gave a faith-based commencement speech at Benedictine College and urged women to embrace the title of “homemaker.”

The controversial speech garnered much praise and backlash.

Butker also went after former President Joe Biden, adding, “Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for the degenerate cultural values and media all stem from pervasiveness of disorder.”

However, shortly after the speech, Butker’s jersey became one of the most popular on the NFL’s online shop.

Butker has not shied away from embracing his faith, and Hunt said that has rubbed off on his teammates, including Patrick Mahomes.

“Harrison is an amazing guy, and the most kind, genuine person. He is an awesome family man, they’re so sweet and precious. I think what’s been really cool to see this year, especially, is that it’s such a sense of iron sharpening iron,” Hunt told Riley Gaines on OutKick’s “Gaines for Girls” podcast..

“Harrison and his boldness in his faith encourages other guys to be bold in their faith. You’ve seen Patrick be so bold in his faith and thanking God right off the bat when we won the AFC Championship. Boldness empowers boldness, and it’s just so refreshing to see, and I think he’s such a light to everybody around him.”

Before the 2024 season began, Butker and the Chiefs agreed to a four-year, $25.6 million deal, the richest contract ever given to a kicker.

This season, he made all but two of his 31 extra-point attempts (he went 38-for-38 in 2023), and he was 21-for-25 (84%) on field goal tries. He connected on all of his tries between 30 and 49 yards, but has missed three straight from 50-plus. He kicked the game-winning field goal in Super Bowl LVII against the Eagles.

  • Father of ex-LSU star left disabled after brain tumor surgery says he hasn’t heard from Brian Kelly, school

Father of ex-LSU star left disabled after brain tumor surgery says he hasn’t heard from Brian Kelly, school

A year and a half ago, Greg Brooks Jr. was a potential NFL prospect, captaining LSU’s football team. Today, he is wheelchair bound and hardly able to speak.

In September 2023, Brooks said he was feeling dizzy and vomited at practice. He said the team diagnosed him with vertigo, but the symptoms never subsided.

It was not until over a month later that Brooks was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent emergency surgery.

However, during the surgery, Brooks said he suffered from several strokes, and he is now relearning to eat, walk and write because of the operation.

“He’s at LSU, one of the best colleges in the United States. Would I have ever thought that his best interests wouldn’t be at heart? No,” Brooks’ father, Greg Sr., said in a recent interview with “Good Morning America.”

“Honestly, I thought it was fake. Like, I was in disbelief. Like a nightmare that I couldn’t wake up from,” “Little Greg” said.

However, Greg Sr. added that he has not heard from anyone at the school, “specifically [head coach] Brian Kelly,” since October 2023, around the time when Little Greg was diagnosed.

“My son almost lost his life, Coach. Where were you? Forget about football. Pick up the phone and say you love the kid, man,” Greg Sr. said.

The Brooks family filed a lawsuit against LSU last August for negligence, saying the school did not handle the situation properly, nor were doctors who operated on Brooks Jr. qualified to do so.

The suit also alleged LSU staff told Brooks to play football despite feeling sick, and they threatened to take his starting spot away if he did not.

“Greg will likely need care for the rest of his life for the injuries he sustained as a result of his providers’ malpractice,” the lawsuit says. “Obviously, Greg will also never be able to play football again, and he will likely never be able to work and/or care for himself without the assistance of others.”

LSU set up a donation fund at the time, but the suit says the funds were never transferred.

Brooks’ lawsuit names Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, where he had his surgery, as a defendant.

“Due to patient privacy laws and pending litigation, we can’t comment on specific individuals or situations,” the hospital said in a statement at the time. “The neurosurgical team at Our Lady of the Lake is among the most experienced in Louisiana and they give our patients the best opportunity for a positive outcome in any circumstance.”

“While LSU cannot comment on ongoing litigation, Greg Brooks remains in our thoughts and prayers as he continues to work through the rehabilitation process,” the university said last October.

Fox News Digital reached out to LSU for comment but has not heard back.

He played in LSU’s first two games of the 2023 season after suiting up in all of LSU’s 14 games in 2022. The Tigers lost the SEC title to Georgia in 2022 but won the Citrus Bowl over Purdue. Brooks had a career-high 66 tackles in 2022.

Brooks transferred to LSU after the 2021 season after spending three seasons at the University of Arkansas. If all went as originally hoped, he’d likely have just wrapped up his NFL rookie season.
