Former NFL player, coach Dick Jauron dead at 74

Dick Jauron, the former head coach of two different NFL franchises, died Saturday. He was 74.

The Chicago Bears confirmed the death. Jauron was the Bears’ head coach from 1999 to 2003.

He was previously diagnosed with cancer, The Daily Item in Massachusetts reported.

He became the Buffalo Bills’ head coach in 2006, a role he maintained until 2009. The next season, Jauron was named the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive backs coach under Andy Reid.

Reid and the Eagles will meet the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans on Sunday for Super Bowl LIX.

Jauron was a two-sport star at Yale in the early 1970s, and he was drafted by both the Detroit Lions in the NFL Draft and the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major League Baseball amateur draft. He ultimately made football his lifelong pursuit, beginning with five seasons as a defensive back in Detroit and three more with the Cincinnati Bengals before his retirement in 1980.

The well-liked Jauron moved into coaching and five years later was hired by the Bills as a defensive backs coach. He went on to coach defensive backs in Green Bay and became friends with Reid, who was an assistant offensive line and tight ends coach.

Jauron had just one winning record in five seasons with the Bears, winning the NFC North in 2001 before losing to the Eagles — then coached by Reid — in the divisional round of the playoffs.

He finished with a 60-82 record and one playoff berth over parts of 10 seasons as a head coach.

Brandel Chamblee, who has long opposed LIV Golf, says he’s second-guessing himself after playing with Trump

Former PGA golfer Brandel Chamblee, now an analyst, has been an outspoken critic of LIV Golf.

Chamblee once said the Saudi-backed league was “funded by a murderous regime” and said the “greedy” players joining the tour were “helping a dictorial murderer launder his reputation.”

In June 2023, the two pro golf tours shocked the world when it was announced they would be working together for the betterment of the game.

Discussions are still underway, but PGA Commissioner Jayu Monahan recently said the tour “asked” President Donald Trump “to get involved for the good of the game, the good of the country and for all the countries involved.”

LIV has played at several Trump-owned courses.

“We are grateful that his leadership has brought us closer to a final deal, paving the way for reunification of men’s professional golf,” Monahan said in a statement this week.

Chamblee said he had a chance to play golf with Trump last year, and the two discussed LIV and how it could be beneficial to the game of golf.

“He was so magnanimous about our differences. At one point, he said, ‘Look, I know you and I differ on this opinion, but hear me out.’ He said, ‘[LIV Golf chairman] Yasir [Al-Rumayyan] loves golf more than you do and more than I do.’ Now, that’s hard to believe because President Trump plays a lot of golf, and I’m crazy about it. But he was serious,” Chamblee said at the Waste Management Open Friday.

“They have $32 trillion worth of oil underneath that sand, and they really have to diversify their economy. He said they are all in on this, and they’re not going anywhere. As the round progressed, he would want to talk almost every hole about LIV, about the Saudi involvement and how excited he was for it.”

Chamblee said he has since grown to “understand why we acquiesce and need Saudi Arabia as a partner in the Middle East,” adding that his own “issues were about the human rights concerns and about how golf was going to have to at some point apologize for some issue.”

Chamblee added he didn’t totally agree with Trump, but the president made convincing arguments to “[make] me think of Yasir as a partner in the game of golf.”

Tiger Woods to play in Genesis Invitational, marking return to competition for first time since British Open

For the first time since the British Open in July, Tiger Woods is back in action on a golf course.

Woods, 49, committed Friday to playing 18 holes at the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines.

It will be the first time Woods will be competing since he had a microdiscectomy in September to alleviate pain in his legs. It was the sixth surgery he has undergone on his lower back.

It is also the first time Woods will be playing since the loss of his mother, Kultida Woods, who died Tuesday at the age of 80.

Normally, the Genesis Invitational is at the Riviera Country Club, but the tournament was moved to Torrey Pines due to the wildfires that devastated the Los Angeles community.

Woods has had a lot of success during his illustrious career at Torrey Pines, with eight wins on the public course alongside the Pacific Ocean.

Torrey Pines is the course where Woods last finished in the top 10 at a PGA Tour event, when he was in a tie for ninth at the Farmers Insurance Open in 2020.

There is no cut at the Genesis Invitational, meaning Woods will be walking for all four days no matter his performance.

The last time Woods played four rounds was at last year’s Masters, when he broke the tournament record for most cuts made at the prestigious major with his 24th consecutive cut made.

  • NFL stars team up to surprise Make-A-Wish group at LIDS ahead of Super Bowl LIX

NFL stars team up to surprise Make-A-Wish group at LIDS ahead of Super Bowl LIX

As important as “The Big Game” is, what happens in the week leading up to the Super Bowl can create lasting memories.

For 19 Make-A-Wish kids and their families, that’s exactly what happened on Friday morning at Locker Room by LIDS in the New Orleans Riverwalk Outlets.

The group, which has been in the Big Easy for Super Bowl LIX week, has had tons of great experiences leading up to the game they will be attending.

But they got a surprise like no other when they were told by Orlando Ashford, Strategic Advisor, Fanatics, that every kid would receive a $250 gift card to spend in the store, which included hats, jerseys, shirts and more from every team in the NFL.

That wasn’t all, though, as Ashford announced some special guests with him to help the kids and their families pick out the right gear: Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs, and Arizona State running Cam Skattebo, who is expected to be drafted in April to his new NFL squad.

The group went wild as the three football players walked out, and they got to shopping.

“Make-A-Wish Foundation is incredible and being able to be here to see the smiles on the kids’ faces, it’s something so simple, like taking a picture, hanging out, shopping, doing whatever. It’s pretty special,” Wirfs, who said that he has a different perspective now being a father himself, told Fox News Digital during the shopping spree.

Skattebo added: “You never really know who you’re going to meet and what smile is going to make the day for you. You don’t know and realize what these kids know about you. The fact that you can make their day by just meeting them, putting a smile on your face while you meet them, it could change their lives and how you look at things.”

Ashford mentioned during his speech before revealing the players that he has actually retired from his role with Fanatics, but he remains on the Make-A-Wish national board because of how much he loves creating memories for these kids and their families on the sports side.

“For a company like Fanatics, we’ve been blessed to go to the Super Bowl and have great events like this,” he said. “To be able to take a little bit of that energy and pour it into some young people who are dealing with some pretty extreme issues and challenges, we’re more than honored to do that as a company.

“The reason I continue to do it is because it’s such an energy boost.”

Flo Bryan, Chief Corporate Alliances Officer, was all smiles as well, interacting with the kids picking out their favorite player’s and team’s gear. It’s safe to say every event like this never gets old.

“Oh, gosh no,” she replied. “You see the smiles on these kids’ faces. Just the fact that we’re able to grant these kinds of wishes with partners like Fanatics. Since they’ve come on board as our official sports sponsor, to have them really elevate these wishes like they’ve been doing is incredible.”

“I couldn’t imagine meeting somebody in the NFL when I was a kid. So, being able to be that person for those kids now is a really cool feeling,” Wirfs said.

  • NFL great Lawrence Taylor recalls stern warning he gave Joe Montana during testy confrontation

NFL great Lawrence Taylor recalls stern warning he gave Joe Montana during testy confrontation

NFL legend Lawrence Taylor was among the hardest hitters to ever to play the sport.

Taylor, 66, recalled a moment from his playing career against Joe Montana, where, after getting duped by the legendary quarterback, he issued the four-time Super Bowl champion a stern warning.

“I remember playing Joe Montana, and I was chasing him down, he came out, he chased out, he’s running to the out of bounds. And just before he stepped out of bounds, I just let up, you know. That son of a – he took that ball and ran down another 15 yards, right?” Taylor said during an appearance on OutKick’s “The Ricky Cobb Show.”

“And I went over to him, and I said, ‘Listen, hey, let me tell you something. If you ever do that again, I will light you up.’ And he apologized, and he said, ‘Man, I understand.’”

Montana would’ve been smart to listen to Taylor’s warning, whom some consider to be the greatest defensive player of all time.

Taylor then brought up Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes and sympathized with defenders for having to adhere to the rules while trying to slow down running quarterbacks in today’s NFL.

“Nowadays, you can’t even touch them when they hit the ground. But then what happens when you’re playing a guy like Mahomes, who does his fake going to go down, and then he takes and runs off. I mean, what happens? Let’s get some fairness in this,” Taylor said.

If Taylor were still playing, he would be certain to issue Mahomes a similar warning he did to Montana.

Taylor is not the only prominent football figure to question the rules surrounding quarterbacks who scramble. Tom Brady shared a similar sentiment to Taylor during an appearance on FOX Sports’ “The Herd” in January.

“When quarterbacks become running backs, and they’re out of the pocket, they should lose their protection,” Brady said.

“We’re trying to protect the quarterbacks, but coaches are calling more quarterback runs than ever in the history of the game. So, who is protecting the quarterback? We’re trying to say the referees should do it?”

There were two calls that Mahomes was the beneficiary of in the Chiefs win over the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional round that sparked debate.

Texans’ star defensive end Will Anderson Jr. was flagged for a roughing-the-passer penalty for hitting Mahomes up toward the head area while throwing a pass, but what Brady seems to be alluding to is the penalty Mahomes received in the third quarter.

Mahomes was scrambling in the third quarter, and as he slid, he was hit by two Texans defenders near the head area as he was going down.

  • Tom Brady stresses how Super Bowl defeat impacts legacy: ‘They all tell me about the losses’

Tom Brady stresses how Super Bowl defeat impacts legacy: ‘They all tell me about the losses’

Tom Brady on Friday described the importance of having a loss on a resume as historic as his in an interview days before Super Bowl LIX between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

Brady said on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” that he didn’t understand the “big deal” of winning the big game, having already won the Orange Bowl at Michigan and then a Super Bowl his second season in the NFL.

It wasn’t until he faced a crushing defeat at the hands of the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII, ending a chance at a perfect season after a record-breaking season for him personally, that he really understood the effect that losing has.

“Then, you go to 2007 and you lose. And then, you go to 2011, and you go to the Super Bowl after having a great team in 2010, and we lose. And it was just like, wow this is way harder. We went 10 years between winning,” Brady said. “And I said, you know what, these Super Bowl moments I get a chance to partake in, I’m going to exhaust every bit of energy I have for this week of games, because when you lose this game, this is on your resume forever.

“A loss in the Super Bowl matters more than any loss that you’re ever going to be a part of. When I go in Philly and (the fans) go ‘Philly Special, Philly Special’ and I’m at the Knicks game with my son and Spike Lee, I throw him a ball, and he catches it on his head like the ‘Helmet Catch’ – that was 17 years ago, and I’m still living that thing down.”

Brady added that fans don’t bring up his losses in the conference championship games.

“They all tell me about the losses in the Super Bowl though.”

Brady then told Cowherd about Patrick Mahomes and the possibility of him losing in the Super Bowl. He said it was obvious that Mahomes would want to win the Super Bowl again because, if not, he would be 3-2 in Super Bowls.

“There’s certainly a lot of pressure, from my standpoint, as I got older, and I realized the enormity of this game, how important it is to actually win this game,” he added.

Brady said that in his last Super Bowl, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he spent two weeks watching film, learning Chiefs players’ movements and body language.

Brady will be on the Super Bowl call for the first time as a broadcaster.

Saints legend Mark Ingram preaches responsible gambling, respect for players ahead of Super Bowl LIX

The “Big Game” is only a day away, and while there will only be one winner between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, many others across the country are hoping they win something, too: their sports bets.

The American Gaming Association (AGA) is estimating that Americans will bet $1.39 billion legally on Super Bowl LIX across those states that provide operating sportsbooks, which is a record.

The continued expansion of legal sports betting markets – North Carolina and Vermont were added among legalized states, and Missouri just voted to approve it to bring the count to 40 states, as well as the District of Columbia – will be highlighted in Super Bowl LIX.

The increased enthusiasm is why former NFL running back Mark Ingram, who was back in New Orleans, the place he called home with the Saints for 10 seasons, teamed up with the AGA to implore sports bettors to game responsibly this Super Bowl.

“You gotta have a gameplan,” he told Fox News Digital on Radio Row in New Orleans. “First and foremost, have a budget, and stick to it. Be responsible, bet legally and don’t be harassing players – sending Venmos, sending CashApps when they don’t hit your prop bets. Enjoy it, respect it. It’s supposed to be entertainment.”

HOW TO WATCH SUPER BOWL LIX BETWEEN CHIEFS, EAGLES STREAMED ON TUBI

Athletes from all sports have talked about sports bettors sending them messages, containing vulgar verbiage and threats to pay them after their performances didn’t work out in favor of their bet slip.

But Ingram is sick of seeing it.

“It’s crazy, man,” he said. “The players didn’t set the over/under for themselves, Vegas did. So, be mad at Vegas. The players are out there trying to do everything they can to help their team win a game.”

Joe Maloney, Senior Vice President, Strategic Communications at the AGA, discussed the five pillars that all sports bettors, experienced or not, should follow heading into the Super Bowl and beyond.

“First, bet legally,” Maloney began. “It’s important that you’re doing it in a legal operator with a legal sportsbook. Two, keep it fun. This is a social activity, do it with others. Just keep it fun. Three, stick to a budget. Understand what amount you want to spend on this type of activity. It’s no different than any other type of entertainment activity. Have a budget for it and stick to it.

“The other piece, which is also very important: Know the odds. Understand the terminology, and understand the difference between a sure bet and a longshot bet. A longshot bet, if you hit it, you’ll make more money. A sure bet, like Jalen Hurts scoring a touchdown in the game on Sunday, that’s probably more of a sure bet.

“Finally, keep your cool. Losing your bet is not an invitation to harass an athlete, harass an official, harass a coach. Just keep it to yourself if you win or lose.”

But there’s one player that Cruz can’t help but give props to, and that’s Saquon Barkley. He’s someone who left the Giants to head south to a division rival, and though he’s no longer on the team, his best career season to date in his first year in Philadelphia has led Barkley’s name to continuously be tied to the Giants.

Barkley said this week in New Orleans that all the Giants talk, whether it’s trolling or not, is starting to get played out.

Cruz obviously wishes Barkley were still wearing blue, but he knows that Barkley’s chase for greatness blocks out any outside noise.

“I think it’s just a testament to who he is and his character,” Cruz said while highlighting his partnership with Captain Morgan. “Ever since I met the guy, he’s been just the same. Just focused on being the best possible running back, the best person that he could be out there on that football field, because he knows if he does well out there, the legacy will take care of itself. He’s a firm believer in that, and I think he does a phenomenal job of being a phenomenal teammate and even better person.”

Barkley has been a difference-maker for the Eagles all season, and the team and its fan base all hope that remains the case for one more game, as the NFL’s leading rusher with over 2,000 yards needs to play well on Sunday to set the tone against the Chiefs.

Now, while Cruz may be giving his flowers to a former Giant like himself, that doesn’t mean he wants to see the Eagles lifting the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the day.

“Is there a way that Saquon can win, but the Eagles lose? Is that possible? That’s not possible,” Cruz said, jokingly. “So, yeah, I’m rooting for the legacy. I’m rooting for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. I just want to see if they can do it.

“I want Saquon to perform well, but I’m rooting for the guys in red to see if they can complete the trifecta and do something we haven’t seen before.”

TURNING BOURBON STREET INTO “RUM STREET”

Cruz is helping Captain Morgan throw one of the biggest parties for Super Bowl week in New Orleans, as the ultimate ‘Rum Street’ celebration begins on Saturday with a party that includes a performance from none other than T-Pain.

“Having T-Pain on Rum Street is going to be pretty insane and pretty intense, so I’m excited for that,” Cruz said. “I’ve been a T-Pain fan for years, and obviously, giving back to the fans. That’s always a big deal for myself, and Captain Morgan feels the same way. It’s just always dope to give back to the fans. They’re the real star in all of this.”

“Rum Street” will also be a way to toast all fans, as they will get handed $10 in “Captain’s Cash” to spend at their favorite bar on Bourbon Street during the week. Captain Morgan slapped QR codes throughout the city, and fans can just scan and get their $10 to use as they please.

“It just goes hand in hand when you’re in a city like New Orleans, and you got Captain Morgan, the official rum of the NFL. So, having parties with them and having their energy down here just makes sense,” Cruz said.
