Cause of ride closures at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Monday night revealed

Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is back to normal operations after a power outage caused numerous ride closures Monday evening, a spokesperson told FOX Business.

The cause of the power outage is not being disclosed, but at one point on Monday evening, 18 rides were shown as closed on the My Disney Experience app. That is nearly half the attractions offered at the resort’s most-visited park, according to USA TODAY.

The high temperature reached 84 degrees in the Orlando area on Monday, data from the National Weather Service shows.

A Disney spokesperson said many people were watching fireworks later in the day when the power outage occurred. Anyone who was on a ride when it went down was safely escorted off, and the park’s after-hours event went on as planned.

At 10 p.m., which was listed as the park’s closing time for those without an after-hours ticket, only three rides remained shut down: Space Mountain, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure and “It’s a Small World,” local FOX 35 reported.

The special ticketed event allowed guests to be in the park until 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Macron says ‘plug, baby, plug’ amid push for nuclear-powered AI

French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday touted the role of the country’s nuclear energy industry in powering its tech industry while joking about one of President Donald Trump’s favorite slogans.

Macron was speaking in Paris at the AI Action Summit and said that France, which has the largest share of electricity generated by nuclear power in the world, is well-positioned to power energy-intensive artificial intelligence (AI) projects.

“I have a good friend in the other part of the ocean saying ‘drill, baby, drill.’ Here, there is no need to drill. It’s just ‘plug, baby, plug,’” Macron said.

“Electricity is available, you can plug, it’s ready,” he added. “And I can tell you, we will go fast and very fast.”

France recently announced a more than $100 billion investment to boost AI development in France “in the coming years” with funds coming from foreign and private investors.

Trump campaigned on expanding U.S. oil and gas production and has often said that the industry will be able to “drill, baby, drill” under his leadership.

In his address at the Republican National Convention last summer as the presidential election was ramping up, Trump said that increased U.S. oil and gas drilling would “lead to a large-scale decline in prices.”

Trump’s calls for expanded fossil fuel production come after former President Joe Biden’s administration implemented new restrictions on energy production on federal lands.

On Inauguration Day, Trump signed executive orders that declared a national energy emergency that aimed to expedite the development of energy infrastructure, as well as an order “unleashing American energy” that revoked executive orders he viewed as impeding energy development.

Last week, the House passed a bill known as the Protecting American Energy Production Act that would block future presidential administrations from enacting bans on oil and gas drilling using hydraulic fracturing (commonly known as “fracking”) without congressional approval.

The bill passed on a 210-188 vote, with 16 Democrats joining all Republicans who voted in support of the legislation. It’s unclear whether the Senate will consider the bill or if it will have enough support to overcome the upper chamber’s 60-vote threshold for the legislative filibuster.

Whole Foods, Costco, Kroger limiting egg purchases as shortages persist

Costco, Kroger and Whole Foods are among the growing list of grocers that are putting a purchasing limit on eggs as supply shortages persist.

Companies started imposing limits on the product as the shortage caused by outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), or bird flu, persists, causing a frenzy among shoppers. Droves of viral videos have surfaced in recent weeks, showing shoppers stockpiling eggs. One video posted on TikTok claimed that an entire section of eggs at a Costco was gone in less than 10 minutes.

Amazon-owned Whole Foods posted signs on its shelves notifying customers that customers can only buy three cartons of eggs at one time.

“We are currently experiencing difficulty sourcing eggs that meet our strict animal welfare standards,” a sign posted at one of its stores in New York City read.

Kroger confirmed to FOX Business that some banner divisions are also limiting egg sales. At stores where limits are in place, the company is asking customers to only buy two dozen eggs per trip, a spokesperson told FOX Business.

Trader Joe’s told FOX Business on Monday that it is limiting egg purchases to one dozen per customer, per day. The limit applies to every Trader Joe’s grocery store in the U.S., according to the company.

Costco also confirmed to CNN that it was limiting customers to three packages of eggs.

Experts have warned that egg shortages will continue as bird flu outbreaks continue to impact the U.S. laying hen flock.

Bernt Nelson, an economist with the American Farm Bureau Foundation, told FOX Business, estimated that more than 136 million birds have been affected by avian influenza since 2022. In December, there were over 18 million birds affected, which he said led to “bare grocery shelves in some places and widespread higher prices.”

According to the Department of Agriculture (USDA), prices were 36.8% higher in December 2024 than a year earlier, but they were still below peak prices in January 2023.

In 2025, the USDA predicted that egg prices, which can vary significantly from month to month, will increase by more than 20%.

Not only are consumers feeling the effects of high egg prices at the grocery store, but they’re facing surcharges at restaurants.

Notably, Waffle House, a Southern breakfast food chain, added a temporary 50 cent per egg surcharge to all of its menus last week. The company blamed the ongoing egg shortage for the dramatic increase in egg prices, saying that “consumers and restaurants are being forced to make difficult decisions.”

  • Can Bed Bath & Beyond pull off a comeback?

Can Bed Bath & Beyond pull off a comeback?

Bed Bath & Beyond is making a comeback with smaller-format stores, but some industry experts told FOX Business that the size of its stores does not matter as much as the product itself.

That is where its prior management team missed the mark, according to CSG Consulting founder Kimberly Reuter and Hitha Herzog, retail analyst and chief research officer of H Squared Research.

Last week. Kirkland’s Inc. finalized a $25 million investment deal with Beyond, the parent company of Bed Bath & Beyond, Overstock, Zulily and BuyBuy Baby, in which Kirkland’s became the exclusive brick-and-mortar operator and licensee for new, smaller format “neighborhood” Bed Bath & Beyond locations nationwide.

In October, when the deal was first announced, the companies said they would leverage Kirkland’s store operations expertise and its brick-and-mortar footprint and to curate an “assortment of iconic legacy vendor partners.” Kirkland’s Inc. CEO Amy Sullivan said in a statement at the time that “Kirkland’s Home has a 58-year legacy in the home decor sector, and the core strength of our brand and this organization lies in merchandising and store operations.”

A Bed Bath & Beyond store is seen on June 29, 2022 in Miami. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images / Getty Images)

Reuter said that the old Bed Bath & Beyond had been riddled with issues such as “poor inventory management, slow adoption of online shopping trends and overreliance on coupon shopping” that caused it to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2023.

BED BATH & BEYOND BRAND IS COMING BACK TO PHYSICAL STORES

In June of that year, Overstock acquired the company’s intellectual property assets for $21.5 million, and by October, changed its corporate name to Beyond Inc., though it continued to fight for survival amid evolving retail dynamics. Last year, it backed away from a deal with The Container Store Group that would have allowed it to use a section within the store’s real estate locations to showcase its assortment of kitchen, bath and bedroom items, which would be co-branded.

“Opening in a smaller format isn’t going to solve any of those problems,” Reuter said. To exacerbate the issue, the company served customers at a time when broad access to home goods was limited. Today, there is relentless competition in the home goods market between Amazon, Temu, Target and Wayfair, Reuter said.

Herzog agreed, saying that while “Bed, Bath and Beyond has incredible brand equity,” that’s “where its value primarily exists.”

“The store’s challenges weren’t about brand recognition, the challenges had to do with the stores not focusing on what the consumer wanted on a local level,” Herzog said. She added that other big box stores like Walmart and Target do a better job at appealing to a consumer based in that local market.

Reuter predicted that the best case scenario for these stores is to become a physical outlet for Kirkland’s private label goods as well as Overstock and Zulily products.

BED BATH & BEYOND SHUTTERED STORES: THESE COMPANIES ARE MOVING IN

“This play starts to look very similar to TJMaxx’s Home Goods stores. We also have a potential for these physical locations to become return centers for the sister companies,” Reuter said.

Regardless, Reuter said if Bed Bath & Beyond and Kirkland’s do not address the root cause of the company’s failure, supply chain and inventory, “they will fail again.”

FOX Business reached out to Kirkland’s for comment.

    Bed Bath Beyond

“Layered onto this, the pending increase in tariffs, which will in turn increase product cost, could be the perfect storm for another failure,” Reuter added.

On the other hand, Herzog said the backing of Kirkland’s makes a significant means the company is better positioned to overcome its prior challenges.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

Before, management was making decisions that weren’t exactly in line with what their core customer would want, Herzog said. Today, Kirkland’s is “driving the conversation and creating the roadmap of where this company is going to go,” Herzog said. “With Kirkland’s backing them, that makes the difference this time around.”

“Without throwing management back up into a management point under the bus, they had issues. I don’t think they really understood the pivot. I think they stumbled after the pandemic,” Herzog said. “They didn’t understand how to make their business nimble enough to withstand a huge hit to the retail industry and their business like the pandemic had.”

  • Trump is ‘right’ to order US to ditch ‘stupid’ penny, Kevin O’Leary says

Trump is ‘right’ to order US to ditch ‘stupid’ penny, Kevin O’Leary says

President Donald Trump is one cent away from scrapping the U.S. penny and ‘Shark Tank’ star Kevin O’Leary is agreeing with him.

“For far too long, the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “This is so wasteful! I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies.”

During an appearance on “Varney & Co.,” Monday, O’Leary said the president is “right” in his request to stop minting.

ELON MUSK’S DOGE FACES FIRST LEGAL CHALLENGE WITHIN HOURS OF TRUMP INAUGURATION

“It’s stupid. Why would you pay $0.02 for a commodity that’s worth one?,” O’Leary questioned.

In fiscal year 2024, the U.S. had to pay $3.69 to make one penny, $5.76 to make a dime, $13.78 to make a nickel and $14.68 to make a quarter, according to the U.S. Mint.

“Who uses a penny anyways? Unless you’re putting them in your loafers and nobody does that anymore. Get rid of it. It’s useless,” O’Leary expressed.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is led by billionaire Elon Musk, posted on ‘X’ that producing the penny is costing American taxpayers tens of millions of dollars, suggesting that it may be one of the items the department may consider eliminating.

ELON MUSK WARNS FEDERAL RESERVE MAY FACE DOGE AUDIT

However, there are some critics who are pushing back on this move by the president.

Americans for Common Cents Executive Director Mark Weller told FOX Business that “eliminating the penny will cost the government more – not less.”

He went on to mention that “without the penny, nickel production could double, compounding the Mint’s financial losses. Any structural change to U.S. coinage should include revamping the nickel and evaluating Mint overhead.”

In the U.S., the penny was one of the first coins made by the U.S. Mint after its establishment in 1792. When it was first produced, the coin was larger and made of pure copper. Today’s smaller coin is made mostly of zinc, according to the U.S. Mint.

Trump, Elon Musk share love of plastic straws

It looks like President Donald Trump and Elon Musk are bonding over their distaste for paper straws.

Musk, the billionaire CEO of automaker Tesla and Trump’s head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has opined about paper straws and strawless lids in the past.

In 2022, for instance, he wrote on X, “Stop the war on straws!” Musk also called paper straws “the worst” in a more-recent August 2024 post on the social media platform.

Paper straws and other alternatives to plastic straws have gained steam over the past 10 years or so because of concerns about the environment and plastic pollution.

Now, Trump has issued an executive order to “end the procurement and forced use of paper straws.”

“We’re going back to plastic straws. These things don’t work. I’ve had a many times and on occasion they break, they explode. If something’s hot, they don’t last very long. Like a matter of minutes. Sometimes a matter of seconds. It’s a ridiculous situation. So we’re going back to plastic straws,” Trump said Monday as he signed the executive order.

Trump’s executive order came after he signaled late last week on Truth Social that he would issue one “ending the ridiculous Biden push for Paper Straws, which don’t work.”

    “BACK TO PLASTIC!” he wrote.

Trump’s announcement prompted Musk to praise Trump as the “Greatest President ever.”

During July of last year, the Biden administration pushed to sunset “federal procurement of single-use plastics from food service operations, events, and packaging by 2027, and from all federal operations by 2035.” It cited an ongoing “plastic pollution crisis” as the reason behind that move and other efforts.

Straws, cups, forks, knives and spoons are some common single-use plastics used for food.

‘BACK TO PLASTIC!’: TRUMP VOWS EXECUTIVE ORDER ENDING ‘RIDICULOUS’ PUSH FOR PAPER STRAWS

Prior to the Biden administration’s July 2024 efforts to phase single-use plastics out of the government’s operations, the Department of Interior had issued a 2022 order seeking to move away from single-use plastics on lands it managed by 2032 by working to “reduce the procurement, sale and distribution” of such products.

Nokia picks Intel’s AI and data center leader Justin Hotard as new CEO

    • Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark will step down and be replaced by Justin Hotard, the Finnish telecoms company said on Monday.
    • Hotard is currently the executive vice president and general manager of Data Center & AI Group at Intel, according to the chipmaker’s website.
    • Nokia shares are up 27.85% over the past year, but are down more than 90% since peaking in June 2000.

Finnish telecoms company Nokia on Monday said Pekka Lundmark would step down as CEO, and that it has appointed Justin Hotard to take over his role.

Hotard, who will take up the position on April 1, is currently the executive vice president and general manager of Data Center & AI Group at Intel, according to the chipmaker’s website.

Telecom gear makers, struggling with lower sales of 5G equipment, have been looking for ways to diversify their markets and break into growing areas such as artificial intelligence.

AI WILL HELP LOWER PRICES, BUT COULD BE USED BY AUTHORITARIAN GOVERNMENTS, OPENAI CEO SAM ALTMAN SAYS

“He has a strong track record of accelerating growth in technology companies along with vast expertise in AI and data center markets, which are critical areas for Nokia’s future growth,” Nokia’s Chair Sari Baldauf said in a statement.

Shares were up 1.6% at 4.7 euros by 0854 GMT on Helsinki’s stock exchange, which was up just 0.45%.

JPMorgan analysts called the CEO transition a surprise as they said Lundmark had been successful at “steadying the ship.”

“Given that a new CEO has already been appointed, it looks like this transition was in the works for some time. With the Datacentre and AI background of the new CEO, it is clear which areas Nokia wants to focus on,” they said in a note.

This view was echoed by analysts at Inderes, who see the change as a strategic shift towards Nokia’s Network Infrastructure unit, where data centers and AI investments are fostering new growth opportunities.

Last year, Nokia made a move to buy U.S. optical networking gear maker Infinera in a $2.3 billion deal to gain from the billions of dollars in investment pouring into data centers to cater to the rise of artificial intelligence.

Lundmark, who was appointed as Nokia’s CEO in 2020, will stay on as an advisor to Hotard until the end of the year, the company said.

In September, Nokia declined media reports saying the company was looking for a new chief executive.

“The planning for this leadership transition was initiated when Pekka indicated to the Board that he would like to consider moving on from executive roles when the repositioning of the business was in a more advanced stage, and when the right successor had been identified,” Baldauf said.

Vice President JD Vance told world leaders in Paris on Tuesday that the United States intends to remain the dominant force in artificial intelligence (AI) and warned that the European Union’s far tougher regulatory approach to the technology could cripple it.

Vance warned that the technology should be free from ideological bias and that President Donald Trump’s administration would ensure that the most powerful artificial intelligence systems would be built in the United States. He added that Washington wanted to partner with the world in the industry.

“We feel very strongly that AI must remain free from ideological bias and that American AI will not be co-opted into a tool for authoritarian censorship,” said Vance, at his first scheduled trip abroad since taking office.

“We believe that excessive regulation of the AI sector could kill a transformative industry just as it’s taking off, and we’ll make every effort to encourage pro-growth AI policies and I’d like to see that deregulatory flavor making its way into a lot of the conversations at this conference.”

Vance was speaking at the AI Action Summit where world leaders, top tech executives and policymakers gathered to discuss the technology’s impact on global security, economics and governance. French President Emmanuel Macron, Indian Prime Minister Shri Modi and Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing were among those in attendance.

The summit comes weeks after Trump announced a new $500 billion AI infrastructure project called Stargate.

Vance said that Europe’s online privacy rules, known by the acronym GDPR, meant endless legal compliance costs for smaller firms.

Vance has previously suggested the U.S. should reconsider its NATO commitments if European governments impose restrictions on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X.

“Many of our most productive tech companies are forced to deal with the EU’s Digital Services Act and the mass of regulations it created about taking down content and policing so-called misinformation,” Vance said.

“And of course, we want to ensure that the internet is a safe place, but it is one thing to prevent a predator from preying on a child on the internet, and it is something quite different to prevent a grown man or woman from accessing an opinion that the government thinks is misinformation.

Vance said that hostile foreign adversaries have weaponized AI software to rewrite history, surveil users, censor speech and undermine other nations’ national security. He said the Trump administration will work to safeguard American AI and chip technologies from theft and misuse.

He also said American workers will be central to the United States’ policies on AI.

It allows the Subway website and app customers in the U.S. to receive a free footlong sandwich if they plug in “FLBOGO” when placing an order for another footlong. The deal does not apply to “Footlong Snacks, The Beast/5 Meat Italian, and the Garlic Roast Beef,” Subway said.

There’s also a BOGO Valentine’s promotion at Shake Shack “whether it’s love, a situationship, or just good company” starting Tuesday, Shack Shack said in a blog post. It centers on Shake Shack’s SmokeShack burger.

Customers buying a one-patty SmokeShack burger can get another one for free with the promo code “BEMINE.” They have to order the burgers either in-store through a kiosk or using the chain’s app or website in order to qualify for the deal, according to the company.

The Shake Shack holiday promotion ends Monday.

The deals have been rolling out ahead of Valentine’s Day, which is rapidly approaching. The love-focused holiday lands on Friday this year.
